一、人与社会
Do you often listen to music at loud volumes You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing, according to the World Health Organization(WHO).
Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud noises for long periods of time, WHO said. 1
The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 decibels (dB,分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.
2 Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(听毛细胞)in our inner ears. These cells detect sounds. However, listening to loud noises for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. 3
Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. 4 For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, it may sound uncomfortably loud.
WHO said the “safe level” for most sound is below 80 decibels for up to 40 hours a week. 5 .
A.This is what causes hearing loss.
B.But this can depend on where you are.
C.Loud noises are harmful to the inner ear.
D.There are different ways to protect your hearing.
E.A level of 80 decibels is roughly equal to the noise of a subway.
F.Young people are more sensitive to different sounds than elder people.
G.Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

I was driving from Harrisburg last night, a distance of about eighty miles. It was late. Several times I got stuck behind a slow-moving truck on a narrow road with a solid white line on my left, and I was clinching(紧握) my fists with impatience.
At one point along an open highway, I came to a crossing with a traffic light. I was alone on the road by now, but as I approached the light, it turned red and I braked to stop. I looked left, right and behind me. Nothing. Not a car, no suggestion of headlights, but there I sat, waiting for the light to change, the only human being for at least a mile in any direction.
I started wondering why I refused to run the light. I was not afraid of being arrested, because there were clearly no police around, and there certainly would have been no danger in going through it.
Much later that night, the question of why I'd stopped for that light came back to me. I think I stopped because it's part of an agreement we have with each other. It's not only the law, but it's an agreement we have, and we trust each other to honor it: we don't go through red lights.
It's amazing that we ever trust each other to do the right thing, isn't it And we do. Trust is our first tendency. We have to make a deliberate decision to mistrust someone or to be suspicious or skeptical. Those attitudes don't come naturally to us.
It's a very good thing too, because the whole structure of our society depends on mutual trust, not distrust. This whole thing around us would fall apart if we didn't trust each other most of the time. We do what we say we'll do; we show up when we say we'll show up;we deliver when we say we'll deliver; and we pay when we say we'll pay. We trust each other in these matters, and when we don't do what we've promised, it's far from the normal. It happens often that we don't act in good faith and in a trustworthy manner, but we still consider it unusual, and we're angry or disappointed with those badly-behaved people. Anyway I was so proud of myself for stopping for the red light that night.
10.The author stopped at the traffic light because ______.
A.there were passers-by crossing the road
B.some policemen were on duty just at that point
C.the trust between people influenced the author
D.there was potential danger
11.What would happen if people didn't trust each other in most cases
A.All the things would run normally.
B.The social system would be thrown into disorder.
C.Hie social traditions would be abandoned.
D.Strict rules and laws would be made.
12.What is the theme of the passage
A.Mutual Trust is the best policy. B.A bird in hand is worth two in the bush.
C.Actions speak louder than words. D.Among the blind the one-eyed is the king.

There are numerous art forms in the world, each with its unique charm. Painting allows artists to express their vision on a flat surface. Whether it’s the vivid oil paintings with their rich colors and thick textures, or the delicate watercolor paintings that seem to hold a dreamy quality, every stroke tells a story. Sculpture, on the other hand, gives life to materials like stone, metal, or wood. The great stone sculptures from ancient times stand as a testament to human creativity, with their figures carved with precision and grace.
Music is another powerful art form that can stir our emotions. Classical music with its complex compositions and symphonic arrangements can transport us to another world. Pop music, with its catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, is loved by the masses. Dance is the art of movement. Ballet dancers move with such elegance and poise that they seem to defy gravity. And modern dance allows for more freedom of expression, with dancers using their bodies to convey deep emotions.
Literature has the power to create entire universes within the pages of a book. Novels can take us on epic adventures, while poetry captures the essence of a moment in the most beautiful and concise way. Theatre combines acting, dialogue, and sometimes music and dance to present stories in a live setting. From the tragic dramas of Shakespeare to the colorful musicals of Broadway, theatre offers a diverse range of experiences.

Experts praise the virtues of social connectivity. It’s linked to better resistance to stress and even longer life. 31 Research suggests that loneliness increases the risk of heart disease, anxiety, depression, high blood pressure and even early death. 32 Doing things by yourself allows you to enjoy activities you love at your own pace and in your own way. Through solitary (独处) pursuits, you learn more about yourself and reflect on your experiences.
33 It is an important part of self-development. It allows you to get to know yourself. When you are surrounded by other, you might set your own ideas and passions aside in order to meet the wants and needs of your friends and family. Taking time on your own gives you a critical opportunity to make creative choices and focus your attention without worrying about what other people are thinking.
34 But research has found that people are often better at solving difficult problems when they work on their own. Where group efforts are often about achieving consensus (一致的意见) and fitting in with the crowd, solo work encourages creativity without added social pressure.
Relationships are often strongest when each person takes time to take care of themselves. Even when it comes to friendships, the old saying may be true. A little absence might really make the heart grow fonder. Having friendships and a strong social support system is important for your mental health and well-being. 35
A.Being alone is harmful if it feels like a punishment.
B.Being alone gives you time to focus on your interests.
C.Being alone, on the other hand, is often associated with loneliness.
D.Research has shown that many people actually prefer being on their own.
E.However, research is increasingly showing that doing things alone does pay off.
F.Brainstorming together is often seen as one of the best ways to generate new ideas.
G.But being alone occasionally may make you appreciate those connections even more.

Online courses have become popular in many countries. There are different kinds of online courses, but most show a video of a teacher and students in a classroom. Students watch the video online and take part in online activities. Some courses are free and open to anyone. 39 Of course, watching videos on a screen is not the same as taking part in a real class.

In South Korea, some students have been taught English by teachers in the Philippines and other countries since 2011. The teachers are in their home countries and are connected to the Korean classrooms via the Internet. Instead of looking at a screen, the students interact with a robot in the classroom. The robot is controlled by the teacher. 42
Thanks to technology, more and more ways of teaching and learning are being developed.

Some cities and lawmakers are resisting crime-fighting tech owing to bias (偏见) and accuracy concerns. Police departments around the U.S. are asking citizens to trust them to use facial recognition software as a handy tool in their crime-fighting toolbox. But some lawmakers — and even some technology giants — are against it.
Take the western Massachusetts city of Springfield, where many residents are Latino or black. Springfield police say they have no plans to use facial recognition systems, but some City Council members are moving to block any future government use of the technology anyway.
At an October hearing on the subject, Springfield City Councilman, Orlando Ramos, defended the technology. “The facial recognition technology does not drop a net from the sky and put you to prison,” he said, noting that it could serve as a useful investigative tool. However, he doesn’t want to take any risks. “It would only lead to more racial discrimination.” he said, citing studies that found higher error rates for facial recognition software used to identify women and people with darker skins.
Similar debates across the country are highlighting racial issues and concerns about the technology’s accuracy. Axon, which supplies body-worn cameras nationwide, had already formed an artificial intelligence ethics board (伦理委员会)that concluded facial recognition technology isn’t yet dependable enough to justify its use on police cameras. Axon Chief Executive Rick Smith said, “Even if facial recognition software was perfectly accurate, the ability to track people raises privacy concerns. “Do we want everybody who walks near a police officer to get their face identified and logged in a database ” he said.
Nevertheless, Todd Pastorini, general manager at biometric forensics (生物取证) company DataWorks Plus, said it’s the “extremely effective” method of running images through photos to help identify a suspect. “Society and the public are going to get frustrated, if governments refuse to adopt a technology that keeps improving”, he said. In his eyes, facial recognition hits are just one part of an investigation.

B.All the people disapprove of facial recognition.
C.Facial recognition is the only tool of investigation.
D.Governments should ban facial recognition.
Many years ago, my dad was facing a serious heart condition. He was unable to do a steady job. He fell suddenly ill and had to be admitted to the hospital.
He wanted to do something to keep himself busy, so he decided to volunteer at the local children’s hospital. My dad loved kids. It was the perfect job for him. He ended up working with the seriously ill children. He would talk, play, and do arts with them.
One of his kids was a girl with a rare disease that paralyzed (瘫痪) her from the neck down. She couldn’t do anything, and she was very depressed. My dad decided to try to help her. He started visiting her in her room, bringing paints, brushes and paper. He stood the paper up, put the paintbrush in his mouth and began to paint. He didn’t use his hands at all. All the while he would tell her, “See, you can do anything you set your mind to.”At the end of the day, she began to paint using her mouth, and she and my dad became friends. Soon after, the little girl was sent home because the doctors felt there was nothing else they could do for her. My dad also left the children’s hospital for a little while because he became ill. Some time later after my dad had recovered and returned to work, in came the little girl who had been paralyzed and only this time she was walking. She ran straight over to my dad and hugged him really tight. She gave him a picture she had done using her hands. At the bottom it read: “Thank you for helping me walk.”
My dad would cry every time he told us this story and so would we. He would say sometimes love is more powerful than doctor, and my dad—who died just a few months after the little girl gave the picture—loved every single child in that hospital.

I remember a basketball game on our home-court at Senn High School in Chicago. The kids from my school, began booing(向……喝倒彩)the visiting team. After a minute or two, Senn's coach, Cap Leighton instructed us that booing the other team was impolite and therefore unacceptable, and it needed to stop immediately. Such was Coach Leighton's authority that it did stop, straightaway. For the rest of the game we restricted ourselves to cheering on our own team.
How many people remember sportsmanship I remember it and now think of it chiefly us something missing from contemporary sports. Sportsmanship was once central to tennis. The famous players, such as the great Australian generation of Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall, and John Newcombe, set an example for us. Harry Hopman, the Australian Davis Cup coach between 1939 and 1967, might send a player home for saying dirty words on the court.
However, some players dealt a blow to sportsmanship with their bad behavior on the court in the name of heightened competiveness. And it's rude of me perhaps to point this out on the weekend of the Super Bowl, but no sport has become more bereft(失去……的) of sportsmanship than football generally and professional football in particular. There is what is sometimes referred to as the 12th man in football. This 12th man is the home crowd, who begin a burst of uninterrupted screaming when the visiting team has the ball, so that its quarterback can't hear instructions from the sidelines and his teammates can't hear his signal calling at the line of mixei fight.
Sportsmanship matters because without it sports are an empty proposition (命题). Sportsmanship implies respect-for the game, for your opponent and for yourself. A great part of the justification(理由)for sports is that it's a forcing-house for building character. Accepting defeat with grace is one of sportsmanship's character-building components. Without sportsmanship, sports are little more than grown men playing children's games.

When we first gave our daughters (then 13 and 15 years old) cell phones for emergencies, we made them sign an agreement in which we strictly ruled where and when they could use their phones and even we could check their every text message. However, in less than a year, we lost control of the situation.
There is a terrible reality that almost every teenager sends between 50 and 100 messages a day — some as many as 300, and 70% of teenagers admit hiding their online behavior from parents. According to a study, teenagers need as much sleep or more than they get as children — that’s between 9 and 10 hours of sleep a night, but only 20% of them are getting it. When they don’t get enough sleep, they perform poorly in school, feel very hungry, are more likely to have flu and are very emotional.
Recently, we adopted a “check in at tuck in (盖被子时交手机)” rule at our house, an idea I learnt from a parenting expert. It is very simple. At bedtime, when we “tuck in” our children for the night, they must “check in” their phones. They will probably bargain like this:
“But I use it for my alarm clock.”
“I’ll wake you up.”
“My friends might need me.”
“If there is an emergency, they can call the fixed phone and I’ll wake you up.”
A few weeks ago, when I drove my younger daughter to a friend’s house for a sleepover (睡衣聚会), she handed me her phone. “I guess I should check this in now, since you won’t be there to tuck me in tonight. I’ll call you from Ellie’s phone if I need you.”

64.You’ve been working out regularly for quite a while, but you’re nowhere near your fitness goals. So now it’s time to bring in your ultimate weapon - your mind.
Rather than thinking of fitness as something mysterious that you do with your body, take an analytical, goal-oriented approach to making physical improvements that stick. Try these tips for creating a smart fitness plan:
Define your goals. Whether it’s to lose fat and gain muscle or to run a triathlon, it’s vital to have a goal to work toward. Knowing where you’re going makes it easier to take the right steps.
Get realistic. Training gains are met through consistent effort over a period of time. Don’t expect dramatic, overnight results - regardless of what exercise equipment infomercials claim.
Reward yourself for all the little positive steps you take and for consistently striving forward.
Be yourself. Work toward a goal that you can achieve with your body. Don’t try to change your basic shape or to go against your own unique physical capabilities. Take an objective look at yourself, then work toward enhancing what you’ve got rather than trying to attain someone else’s body.
How many tips for creating a smart fitness plan are there in the passage What are they

If you were asked to list World Heritage Sites, you would probably think of places connected with ancient art and culture, historical buildings and monuments. And of course, many of these are on the World Heritage List(WHL)(世界遗产名录). But the WHL also contains a lot of sites that are not so famous.Let’s look at a few of them.
Robben Island in South Africa
This island was used as a prison, a hospital and a military base. But it’s probably most famous as a maximum security prison for political prisoners in the twentieth century. Nelson Mandela was one of its most famous residents. The WHL says it represents “the victory of democracy(民主) and freedom over oppression and racism(种族主义)”.
Borders of France and Spain
This is an area of great natural beauty and the mountains have many interesting geological formations. But it is also an area of small farms. People there still use a type of agriculture that used to be common in mountainous areas of Europe but has almost completely disappeared in modern times.
The capital city of Brazil, Brasilia
Brasilia is a capital city that was created from nothing in 1956. The WHL calls it “a landmark in the history of town planning”. The different areas of the city and the buildings themselves were all designed at the same time carefully. Every part of the city shows the ideas of the planner and architect.
Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia
Simien Mountains National Park was one of the first sites to be listed in 1978. It is one of the highest mountain areas in Africa, and the WHL calls it“one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world”. It is also important for its wildlife. The population of some rare animals is getting smaller and smaller.

A machine can now not only beat you at chess, it can also outperform you in debate. Last week, in a public debate in San Francisco, a software program called Project Debater beat its human opponents, including Noa Ovadia, Israel’s former national debating champion.
Brilliant though it is, Project Debater has some weaknesses. It takes sentences from its library of documents and prebuilt arguments and strings them together. This can lead to the kinds of errors no human would make. Such wrinkles will no doubt be ironed out, yet they also point to a fundamental problem. As Kristian Hammond, professor of electrical engineering and computer science at Northwestern University, put it: “There’s never a stage at which the system knows what it’s talking about.”
What Hammond is referring to is the question of meaning, and meaning is central to what distinguishes the least intelligent of humans from the most intelligent of machines. A computer works with symbols. Its program specifies a set of rules to transform one string of symbols into another. But it does not specify what those symbols mean. Indeed, to a computer, meaning is irrelevant. Humans, in thinking, talking, reading and writing, also work with symbols. But for humans, meaning is everything. When we communicate, we communicate meaning. What matters is not just the outside of a string of symbols, but the inside too, not just how they are arranged but what they mean.
Meaning emerges through a process of social interaction, not of computation, interaction that shapes the content of the symbols in our heads. The rules that assign meaning lie not just inside our heads, but also outside, in society, in social memory, social conventions and social relations. It is this that distinguishes humans from machines. And that’s why, however astonishing Project Debater may seem, the tradition that began with Socrates and Confucius will not end with artificial intelligence.
86.Why does the author mention Noa Ovadia in the first paragraph
A.To explain the use of a software program.
B.To show the cleverness of Project Debater.

88.What is Project Debater unable to do according to Hammond
A.Create rules. B.Comprehend meaning.
C.Talk fluently. D.Identify difficult words.
89.What can we learn from the last paragraph

American Dream
The American Dream is the belief held by many in America. 90 James Adams defined(定义)the American Dream in 1931 as ''life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement'' regardless of social class or circumstances of birth. 91 The declaration declares that ''all men are created equal''.
The American Dream was a driving factor not only in the gold rushes of the mid to late 1800s, but also in the waves of immigration throughout that century and the one following.
During the 19th century the writer Horatio Alger, Jr. became famous for his novels that idealized(理想化)the American Dream. 92 Nearing the 20th century, major industrialist personalities became the new model of the American Dream, many beginning life in the worst conditions but later controlling enormous corporations and fortunes. This acquisition of great wealth showed many that if you had talent, intelligence, and a willingness to work extremely hard, you were likely to be a success in life as a result.
In the 1990s, the pursuit(追求)of the American Dream could be seen in the Dotcom boom. 93 That was the Internet. It was again driven by the same faith that by one's talent and hard work, anyone can become successful in America. 94 This new chapter of the American Dream again became the beacon(灯塔)to the world and attracted many people from China and India to Silicon Valley to form startups, and seek their fortune in America.
A.Ordinary people started new companies from their garages and became millionaires.
B.Just as the Chinese people are running after their own dream.
C.All over the world, people became crazy at whatever could bring them good luck.
D.His novels about down-and- out bootblacks(擦鞋匠)who were able to achieve wealth and success helped to firmly establish the dream within popular culture.
E.Since then, the idea has been rooted in the United States Declaration of Independence.
F.They think that through hard work, courage, and determination one can achieve a better life for oneself.
G.People in the US, as well as the rest of the world, poured their energy into the new Gold Rush.
If you’re like most people, you think you are smart enough to avoid advertising. 95 That, at least, is what we tell ourselves. But what we tell ourselves is wrong. Advertising works, which is why, even in hard economic times, Madison Avenue is a $34 billion-a-year business.
Lindstrom is a practitioner of neuromarketing research, in which consumers are exposed to ads while connected to machines that monitor brain activity, pupil dilation, sweat responses and flickers in facial muscles, all of which are markers of emotion. According to his studies, 83% of all forms of advertising principally engage only one of our senses:sight. Hearing, however, can be just as powerful, though advertisers have taken only limited advantage of it. Historically, ads have relied on slogans to catch our ear, largely ignoring everyday sounds—a steak sizzling, a baby laughing and other noises our bodies can’t help paying attention to. 96
To figure out what most appeals to our ear, Lindstrom wired up his volunteers, then played recordings of dozens of familiar sounds, from MeDonald’s ubiquitous “I’m Lovin’ It” slogan to cigarettes being lit. The sound that blew the doors off(远远胜过)all the rest—both in terms of interest and positive feelings—was a baby giggling. The other high-ranking sounds were less original but still powerful. The repetitive sound of a cell phone was Lindstrom’s second-place winner. Others that followed were an ATM distributing cash and a soda being popped and poured. In all of these cases, it didn’t take a professional to invent the sounds, infuse them with meaning and then play them over and over until the subjects internalized them. 97
TV advertisers aren’t the only ones who may start putting sound to greater use. Retailers are also catching on. The 0101 department store in Japan, for example, has been designed as a series of soundscapes, playing different sound effects such as children at play, birdsongs and lapping water in the sportswear, fragrance and formal-wear sections. Lindstrom is consulting with clients about employing a similar strategy in European supermarkets, piping the sound of fizzing soda into the beverage department.
None of this means that advertisers just have to turn the audio dials and consumers will come running. Indeed, sometimes, they flee. In the early years of mainstream cell-phone use, the Nokia ringtone was recognized by 42% people in the UK—and soon became widely disliked. That, Lindstrom says, was partly because so few users practiced cell-phone etiquette and the blasted things kept going off in movie theatres. 98 , because people so often hear it when they are rebooting after their computer has crashed. In these cases, manufacturers themselves must reboot by changing the offending sound slightly or replacing it entirely.
A.Weave this stuff into an ad campaign, and we may be powerless to resist it.
B.Even when we solve the problem about when advertising works, we need to move on to the larger problem of predicting what works.
C.The Microsoft start-up sound has taken on similarly negative associations.
D.Major companies realized the importance of taking advantage of consumers’ curiosity about new commodities and make it a marketing strategy.
E.Rather, the sounds already had meaning and thus triggered a series of reactions: hunger, thirst, happy expectation.
F.You flip right past newspaper ads, never click on ads online and leave the room during TV commercials.
Different countries have different wedding traditions and marriage customs. The one thing that all wedding ceremonies commonly seem to have is the commitment (承诺) of love for all time during a public ceremony.
Everyone at a wedding hopes for great happiness between the wedding couple. Wedding traditions are usually a way of showing signs of the hope for great happiness. Some of these traditions are very interesting.
In Sweden, the traditional bride will wear three rings by the end of the wedding ceremony. The first is the engagement (订婚) ring that she enters the ceremony with. The second, the wedding ring, is added to the first. A final ring, however, is added as well. This ring is known as the “motherhood” ring. This is said to show that marriage is about more than just love. It is about building a family.
Wedding traditions in the Philippines include the Pandango, a dance which can last for hours. During the Pandango, guest spin (用大头针别住) money to the bride’s dress to pay for their honeymoon.
A traditional Irish bride may wear a blue wedding dress—believing blue to be a lucky color. English Lavender (薰衣草) is often mixed with her wedding flowers. It is traditional for the bride to braid (编发) her hair-as it is considered a good way to bring luck to the new couple.

LIVING LEGENDS
Help us choose some “Living Legends of Sports”. They must be athletes who are masters in their sports and also set good examples for others. Here are our first two choices. Lang Ping
As a player, Lang Ping brought honour and glory to her country. As a coach, she led the China women’s volleyball team to medals at world championships and the Olympics. As a person, Lang Ping is loved by fans at home and abroad. When the Chinese team was preparing for the 2015 World Cup, her determination was tested. The team that Lang Ping had built was falling apart. One of the best players had been injured, and the team captain had to leave because of heart problems. Losing two important players was a big challenge, but Lang Ping did not lose heart. She had faced difficulties before, and she knew that her young players could win if they worked together as a team. Two weeks later, they were world champions! Then in 2016, Lang Ping led her volleyball team to Olympic gold in Brazil. Michael Jordan
When Michael Jordan’s feet left the ground, time seemed to stand still. The player who became known as “Air Jordan” changed basketball with his graceful moves and jumps. Jordan’s skills were impressive, but the mental strength that he showed made him unique. In the final seconds of a game, Jordan always seemed to find a way to win. Jordan says that the secret to his success is learning from his failures. “I can accept failure; everyone fails at something. But I can’t accept not trying.” Losing games taught him to practise harder and never give up. In life, Jordan has learnt to share his success with others. The Boys and Girls Club which he started in Chicago has been helping young people since 1996.

As a high school student, you’re likely used to learning through reading textbooks. 1 This lies at the heart of “experiential appreciation(体验式欣赏)”, a philosophy that encourages you to engage directly with the world around you. It’s about learning from real-life experiences, and discovering a more profound and engaging way to learn.
To practice experiential appreciation, you can start by getting involved in hands-on activities related to your subjects. They will provide. a firsthand understanding of the concepts you’re studying, making learning active and meaningful. So, try joining a sports team, picking up a paintbrush, or taking part in a local charity event: 2 As you dive deeper, immerse(沉浸) yourself fully in the surroundings and activities. When you’re in nature, don’t just look around. 3 Touching the leaves, feeling the wind and listening to the birds can enrich your learning and make each moment more memorable.
4 After trying something new, ask yourself what you learned and how it made you feel. Write in a journal or discuss it with friends. This self-discovery turns experiences into life lessons and offers a deeper understanding of the world.
Experiential appreciation transforms learning from a task to be completed into a journey to be treasured. 5 So, explore the world around you, let every experience shape you, and discover the endless possibilities that await. In my family, Saturday always meant cleaning day. As soon as any child was able to use a dust cloth, he or she was assigned a household chore. We had to complete our assigned chore before school assignments. 6
Keeping up with chores was just how our family functioned. We complained and tried to avoid them. 7 As a family, we all had roles in keeping the home running smoothly, and the responsibility grew with age. It made sense to us, as much as we disliked it.
When I was a kid, I knew when doing chores I was helping my family. It wasn’t until I grew into adulthood that I realized that chores are more than a list of tasks. 8 Being assigned chores communicates that each family member is needed and that their action affects every person living under the same roof.
Handling daily household chores is never easy, but doing them out of love for my family makes it manageable. 9 I enjoy jumping in to help whenever my parents need a hand. While working together, we have the chance to have meaningful conversations, share experiences, and build memories.
10 Household chores mean learning how to manage responsibility and understand kids’ role, let alone practicing discipline, time management, and selflessness. All these consequences would seem to tip the scales in favor of chores.
A.We never questioned why we did them, though.
B.Household chores were a source of happiness for us.
C.They bring about a sense of belonging within a family.
D.In effect, doing chores alongside my family is a great joy.
E.And the older we grew, the more my parents expected us to do.
F.Allowing children to share burdens helps them recognize their strengths.
G.It also comes as no surprise that chores are important for personal growth.
People develop nicknames for all sorts of reasons. While some nicknames (绰号) are fun and friendly, others can be unkind or hurtful. 11 But don’t worry — with the right methods, dropping an unwanted nickname is entirely possible. Here are some easy steps to help you reclaim your real name and establish how you wish to be addressed.
12
Think back to when the nickname first started. Who initiated it Was it meant to be friendly, funny, or a little mean The context determines your approach. For example, if a loving family member gave the nickname, you might explain your feelings gently, but if classmates used it to tease you, you can be more direct about wanting it to stop.
Express your preference clearly.
If you want to be called by your real name, express this preference openly and firmly. 13 For example, instead of saying, “You know, I don't really like being called ‘Sparky’,” try something like, “I prefer to be called [Your Full Name] from now on.”
Stick to your request.
This is crucial. You’ll likely need to remind them of your preference many times, especially in the beginning. 14 Gently correct them each time. A simple, “Actually, please call me [Your Name],” delivered calmly but consistently, can be very effective.
Set boundaries.
15 If someone keeps using the nickname after you’ve asked him or her not to, you might need to set clear limits. This could involve politely leaving the conversation or restating your preference.
Dropping an unwanted nickname takes time and effort. With patience and persistence, people will learn to respect your preferred name.
A.Trace the origin story.
B.Challenge the nickname.
C.This can help you start a nickname-free life.
D.This way, people are more likely to take it seriously.
E.Once a nickname sticks, it can be difficult to change
F.Be clear about what you will and will not respond to.
G.Don’t get discouraged if people make the mistake repeatedly.

“Boundaries (界限) What do you mean I can’t ” If you’ve heard your kids mutter this or something similar, you’re not alone. Parenting is a dance of love and limits. Establishing healthy boundaries is important for a child’s growth, teaching them respect, responsibility, and adaptation. 20 Here is a look into practical tips for performing boundaries in parenting:
20. Involve kids in rule-making
When children participate in setting their own parenting boundaries, they’re more likely to respect them. 21 For example, ask your child what they think a reasonable amount of time for daily screen time might be, then work together to find a middle ground that suits family expectations.
21. Lead by example
22 By modeling the behavior you want to see, you set a practical standard for them to follow. Showing respect, punctuality, and kindness shows your child that these are valued behaviors in your family.
22. 23
Encouraging your child to express their thoughts and feelings openly with you can help maintain healthy boundaries. It shows how well they understand the rules and if any changes are needed. Regularly involving in discussions about their day or specific incidents teaches them how to set healthy boundaries with parents.
23. Avoid micromanaging
According to experts, over-managing every aspect of the life of a child can restrict their ability to think for themselves and solve problems on their own. Allowing children to make decisions appropriate for their age teaches them independence and confidence. 24
Boundaries in parenting aren’t about being the strictest parent on the block put about offering guidance and security. Healthy limits let kids know what’s expected while ensuring they grow up feeling safe and loved.

Lucy always had trouble waking up early in the morning. She would hit the snooze button (贪睡按钮) multiple times and often rush to school in a panic. As a result, she was often late to class, and struggled to focus during lessons. Her grades began to slip, and her teachers sometimes reminded her to pay more attention. Lucy knew something had to change.
She started by setting a goal: waking up at 6:30 a. m. every day. She placed her alarm clock across the room so that she had to get out of bed to turn it off. She also planned her mornings carefully, including a short workout, a healthy breakfast, and a few minutes to review her schedule.
At first, it was hard. She felt tired in the morning and wanted to sleep longer. But she kept reminding herself of the benefits: more energy, better focus, and less stress. After a few weeks, waking up early became easier. She started feeling more refreshed and had enough time to prepare for school calmly. Her new routine also helped her in other ways. Her academic performance began to improve and her test scores started to rise. And Lucy even began developing new interests, such as reading novels and painting, which made her feel more balanced and inspired.
Now, Lucy enjoys her mornings and feels proud of her progress. She has learned that with patience, consistency, and effort, good habits can replace bad ones and lead to lasting improvement.
25.What problem did Lucy have in the morning
26.What happened to Lucy’s test scores with her new routine
27.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
Lucy began developing new interests, such as reading novels and painting because she felt tired of her academic performance.
28.What can you learn from Lucy (In about 40 words)
The printed book is back. Studies have shown that students retain more information when reading a hard-copy book compared to reading on a digital device. 29 The students found, according to a teacher, that “the ease of navigation (浏览)” was superior when using a traditional book.
I love the way we now judge printed books using the language of the digital world. E-books may come with a “suite of navigational tools,” but it turns out that the best navigational devices are your forefinger and thumb. 30 To think, all this time, those devices have just been sitting there, dangling at the ends of your arms.
Can a traditional book offer all the features of an e-book Alas, no. 31 Luckily, it will naturally form two halves joined in the middle (“the spine”). If the left-hand chunk is thicker than the right-hand one, you are more than halfway through.
Fans of the e-book point out digital text is easy to annotate (注解). Some devices even feature an image of a pencil to guide readers through the process. Traditional-book users have a similar system called a “pencil.” Thus annotated, such books can be left around for others to peruse (精读).
32 However, one must question whether this is really an advantage. In secondary school, placing the weighty textbooks in my backpack would draw my shoulders back and my chest forward in a way that turned the school into the equivalent of a military parade ground. It totally transformed my physique.
Educational trends come and go. 33 But for the moment, I find myself standing at attention, flexing my textbook-built shoulders and saluting their glorious return.
A.There’s still no substitute for the traditional book.
B.Traditional books also excel at stirring up feelings.
C.Admittedly, e-books are lighter than paper volumes.
D.Maybe the shift back to traditional books won’t last.
E.You can use them to flip the pages forward and backward.
F.It lacks a “progress bar” indicating what percentage of the book has been read.
G.In response, one school near where I live in Australia abandoned its e-readers entirely.
How to Find Motivation (动力) When You Feel Tired of Work
If you feel you don’t want to work anymore but still need an income, there are several ways you can shift your mindset (心态) 34 .
Start by understanding why you feel unhappy
35 , you can determine what kind of changes you need to make. Think about your least favorite parts of going to work, from your commute (上下班往返) to your coworkers and brainstorm specific solutions. For example, if you want to stop working so you can spend more time with your family at home, you could look for a job with fewer hours or that allows you to work from home.
36
If you don’t think you can be happy and motivated in your current job, consider seeking different career options. Consider if you have other skills and how you could position your qualifications for different careers. You can also explore the idea of going back to school or entering a training program for a complete career change.
Adjust your daily habits
Integrating small, positive habits with your work routine can help you improve your opinion on work. Small changes such as having your favorite kind of coffee in the office can improve your mood. 37
Give yourself rewards
Sometimes you struggle with not wanting to go to work because you don’t get positive feedback in your routine schedule. 38 such as getting to work on time or participating in meetings. Staying fit and healthy isn’t an easy task. But if you are determined to lead a life worthy of living, then it is not too difficult to follow a lifestyle that leads to healthy outcomes. 39 . What we miss is that a healthy life is a complete package of a strong mental, physical and emotional well-being. Here are some ways to help you remain healthy.Exercise in a consistent (持续的) manner

We take them for granted and sometimes bear the pain of losing them too. 41 . So, people should build the stronger relationships for the sake of remaining healthy.Keep a separate work and private life
Every workaholic (工作狂) suffers from some kind of stress at work, which they have to regularly deal with. 42 , the problem begins when people try to mix the work life with their personal lives. This situation can create tension between family members which will ultimately lead to a negative impact on your health. 43
Whatever you do in your life — from eating to sleeping to hitting the gym — maintaining a regular schedule(日程安排) is always recommended. Even if you do all the things right, but keep them on a haphazard (杂乱无章的) schedule, then the effect it creates on your health will show up in the years to come, if not immediately.

I remember him on his first day in the sixth grade. He was the only black face in a sea of white. A few days later, he had yet to connect with anyone. Our teacher asked me to talk to him. So I went over to him and said, “Hi.” He replied, “Hi.” And that was it for day one. The next day, “What’s up ” “Not much.” We added a word or two each day until full sentences were formed, and then a paragraph.
Soon we became good friends and our friendship survived new friendships and small arguments. One day, with nothing better to do, we played jokes on each other. When it was my turn, I expressed criticism of his choice of clothing. He was laughing as hard as I was. Strangely enough,I remember so much about that day except in what context (语境) the N-word (rude word for a black person) was used. My purposes were not to wound him obviously. He was my best friend. But the look on his face told me otherwise.
It was a few days before we spoke again. Although we insisted we’d be friends forever, I never saw him after high school. It may not have had anything to do with what I said, or it may have had everything. By that point, we weren’t intimate enough for me to ask any more.
Several days ago, there was a near race riot (暴动) during a high school basketball game, and angry teenagers shouted several rude words. These words brought back a flood of memories. All I wonder is if these kids will ever feel as bad as I did for using such a rude word. It’s a curse (诅咒) word, but the real curse is on the person who uses it.
44.What does the first paragraph talk about (no more than 10 words)
45.What happened to the author’s friend according to Paragraph 2 (no more than 10 words)

Being proud of yourself is also known as having strong self-esteem. People who are proud of themselves tend to have passions in life, feel content and set good examples for others. As Robert Reasoner, a self-esteem expert, emphasizes: “Healthy self-esteem empowers individuals to make constructive life choices.” 54 The following strategies will help boost self-esteem.
List your personal goals. These can be fairly simple, such as organizing your bedroom, or you can set bigger objectives, such as going back to college to earn your degree. 55 For example, you might note down, “I’ll set up boxes for things I plan to donate, sell or recycle.” or “I’ll contact the college for an application.”
Educate yourself. Read books and news articles, keep track of current affairs and discuss issues with your friends and family. 56 People who take care of their minds and have a thirst for knowledge often feel proud of themselves and their achievements.
Make daily affirmations(肯定). “Affirmations can be a helpful tool in helping you express your wants and needs in life,” explains Dr. Deepak Chopra, a professor in psychology. Each day, give yourself words of support. 57 Yet, over time it can become second nature if you take the practice seriously.
58 Buy yourself a new outfit or take yourself out to dinner if you’ve reached a goal or even attempted to reach a goal. Rewarding yourself also can be as simple as telling yourself you’ve done a good job and setting new goals to achieve.
A.Engage in study groups.
B.Take care of your personal appearance.
C.You might feel uncomfortable doing so at first.
D.In turn, these choices promote personal growth.
E.Also write down how you plan to achieve your goals.
F.Reward yourself for your accomplishments — big and small.
G.Replace your negative thought with a positive self-comment.
You have an important exam in a few days and you’re not feeling prepared. With only a short time to go, you may try four strategies here. 59 .
Get organized
Time-poor students should use a planner to identify the time available for study. 60 . Being organized with your study materials helps you to be organized in your thinking too, as you can easily access the materials you need.
Take and reflect on notes
Have you ever tried to recall what you learned a week ago and found it’s as if it’s been wiped from your memory 61 . An active note-taking process is important to help you transfer new information from short-term memory and then recall it more easily after it is stored in the long-term memory.
62 .
Research has found the rate you forget information is minimized if you interact with new information within 24 hours of first receiving it. A second, shorter repetition within 24 hours brings recall back up to 100%. A third repetition within a week for an even shorter time brings recall back to 100%.
Self-testing
Self-testing is a powerful way to study and learn. And flash cards are a great way to help you to self-test. 63 . You never know when you’ll get a few minutes for some quick studying, so always be prepared If you have a five-minute break between classes or on the bus, for example, you can pull your cards out for a quick study session.
A.Always take them along with you
B.Keep interacting with the content
C.Focus on one thing for an extended time
D.That’s where note-taking jumps in-as a hero
E.Then actually be disciplined and use that time to study
F.So you’d better mix up study sessions with various practices
G.They will improve your exam success and relieve your exam anxiety
Learning a new language can be a challenging but rewarding journey. Whether you’re studying for travel, work, or personal growth, the right strategies can make the process much easier. Here are five tips to help you become fluent faster:
64 . Instead of focusing only on memorizing vocabulary lists, try to learn words in context. Read short stories, watch TV shows, or listen to podcasts in the language. When you encounter a new word, write down the sentence it’s in — not just the word itself. This helps you understand how the word is used and makes it easier to remember. For example, learning that “llover” means “to rain” is useful, but seeing it in a sentence like “Ma ana va a llover” (“It’s going to rain tomorrow”) helps you grasp its usage.
65 . Many people are afraid to speak a new language because they worry about making mistakes. But mistakes are a natural part of learning. Even native speakers make errors! The more you practice speaking — whether with a language partner, a tutor, or even to yourself — the more comfortable you’ll become. Don’t focus on being perfect; focus on communicating your ideas. Over time, your grammar and pronunciation will improve as you learn from your mistakes.
66 . Immersing yourself in the language’s culture can deepen your understanding and make learning more enjoyable. Try cooking traditional recipes from countries where the language is spoken, listening to local music, or celebrating cultural holidays. Not only will this make learning more fun, but it will also help you understand the nuances of the language. For example, certain phrases or idioms might make more sense when you know the cultural context behind them.
67 . Consistency is key when learning a new language. It’s better to study for 15-20 minutes every day than to cram for several hours once a week. Set a specific time each day for language practice — maybe during your morning coffee or before bed — and stick to it. You can use apps, flashcards, or online courses to make daily practice easy. Over time, these short sessions will add up, and you’ll notice significant progress.
68 . Tracking your progress can keep you motivated. Keep a journal where you write a few sentences in the new language each day, and look back at it after a month — you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve improved. Celebrate small wins, like having a short conversation or understanding a song lyric. Learning a language takes time, so be patient with yourself and acknowledge every step forward.
A.Practice speaking without fear of mistakes
B.Learn words in context, not in isolation
C.Avoid using online language tools
D.Immerse yourself in the culture
E.Study for long hours once a week
F.Practice consistently, even for short periods
G.Track your progress and celebrate small wins

Following My Dream
I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything that moved on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me “The dream is invaluable.” However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular thing happened, which almost ruined (毁坏) my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in Senior Two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $12.25 per pared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly, money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect (前景) of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn’t dare to tell my coach. I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage “If you make your bed, you have to lie in it.” I decided to talk to my coach by myself. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me. I gathered my courage and knocked at his door.

In today’s world where artificial intelligence (AI) can copy our words, automate our decisions and even simulate emotions, understanding what sets us apart isn’t just philosophical. 73 Knowing what makes us unquestionably different from intelligent machines helps us protect and even expand our most valuable strengths— our creativity, emotional intelligence, life experiences and sense of purpose, so that we don’t just coexist with AI, but rise above it, shaping the future instead of being shaped by it. Here are three irreplaceable human attributes (属性).
We have real-life experiences while AI has data. Experience is one of the most powerful things that shape us from the moment on which we’re born. 74 While AI, on the other hand, can analyze massive data, it doesn’t learn from pain, joy, failure, or success the way humans do. Experience isn’t just about information— it’s about personal growth.
75 We create stories to make sense of the world, find purpose in struggle and connect our past to our future. However, AI doesn’t wonder about “the why” behind what it does. Instead, it just processes requests and generates responses, without caring about the outcome beyond the goals that it’s pre-programmed to achieve.
We have free will while AI has codes (代码). Humans can choose generosity over self- interest, forgiveness over hatred, and innovation over conformity. But AI only follows rules. No matter how advanced, it’s always bound by its programming. 76
AI may be extraordinarily useful and helpful, but it will likely never provide what makes us human—empathy (共情), true love, meaningful purpose and life experiences. 77 In this way, we can ensure that technology will serve humanity—not the other way around.
A.It’s gaining popularity.
B.Besides, it is deeply practical.
C.We are considerate while AI is creative.
D.We seek meaning while AI follows instructions.
E.It doesn’t have desires, beliefs or independent thoughts.
F.Every failure, success and challenge can influence our future decisions.
G.So value our and others’ emotional depth, life experiences and creative potential.
I used to hate working out, but now it’s my favorite part of the week. Here are simple tips to encourage yourself into loving exercise. Remember, every person is different, and what works for one might not work for another. 78
Some of us love doing exercise by ourselves, while some of us are social butterflies. 79 Make exercise a chance to hang out with friends. Doing something hard is tough and tiresome. Doing something hard with friends is funny and competitive.
There is something in behavioral science called coupling. 80 In terms of working out, this means adding another activity to your workout. For example, if you love music, you can listen to songs as you run outdoors.
81 Well, that’s what the science says, but it wasn’t easy to feel that at the beginning of my exercise journey. That’s why it was super important to treat myself after a good workout. Treating yourself connects exercise with something good happening to you, like visiting your favorite coffee shop or watching your favorite TV show.
One of the best things to start exercising is to take it easy. If you work out every single day, you’re likely to burn out. Therefore, take it easy. Start with movements you like to do. Go on walks, listen to your songs and enjoy some fresh air. Do exercise two or three times a week. This might be one of the most important tips. 82
A.You have to slow down before taking off.
B.Working out can give you feel-good emotions.
C.They like the effort, the sweat, and the hard work.
D.Try them out and see if any of the tips work for you.
E.It’s when you put two seemingly unrelated things together.
F.If you don’t like working out alone, make it a group activity.
G.However, there is some science behind exercising and brain health.

Soldier Cui Xinze’s mission is to guard the pipeline that transports refined oil from Golmud in Qinghai to Lhasa in Tibet Autonomous Region, a vital artery (干线) that is called a “lifeline” for Tibet.
His day begins with a three-hour patrol to check for leaks (泄露) along the pipeline, which crosses rivers and ravines (沟壑) in the mountainous region. If something appears abnormal, he and his team have to walk 30 kilometers to patrol the area for which they’re responsible.
The oxygen concentration on the plateau is just half of that on the plains. “Although we lack oxygen, we never lack the faith and passion to guard the pipeline as soldiers,” says the 39-year-old, who began his mission at the age of 19.
The job is more than just simply conducting a daily patrol. Sometimes when a spillage (泄露) occurs, it can mean extreme danger, and it requires the guards to plug (堵) the leak and expose themselves to possible fires.
Apart from a lack of oxygen, they have to struggle with the bitter cold. The temperature can fall as low as -40 ℃ in winter and they have to patrol regularly, despite the strong wind and snow. Although it’s summer, the station where Cui is based has its heating system on.
“Compared with the physical pain we have to endure, the loneliness is more painful,” says Zhao Weiqiang, a soldier who has worked with Cui for 10 years. Day after day, they walk the same route, do the same exercise and even have the same meals, since food is not easy to transport to their station. Now they’re trying to cultivate vegetables and raise animals at their station to help alleviate the tedium (单调乏味). Despite the drawbacks, they still carry their sense of duty. “To guard the pipeline is our mission and I’m proud to do it,” says Zhao.
83.What’s the danger pipeline soldiers may face when a spillage occurs (no more than 5 words)
84.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 5 (no more than 8 words)
85.Why do pipeline soldiers feel lonely (no more than 6 words)
86.What does the underlined word “alleviate” in the last paragraph probably mean (1 word)
87.What do you think of these pipeline soldiers Please explain. (no more than 20 words)
My Reverse(反向的) Culture Shock
Language difficulties. Culture shock. Homesickness(乡愁). 88 But for me, returning home proved the hardest of all.
After the experience of a year abroad, coming home can feel disappointing. Why was I feeling so disconnected 89 I’d idealized(理想化) home in my mind. And I’d expected everything to remain exactly the same while I was gone. When I got back and the reality fell short of these ideals, I experienced what I’d call a reverse culture shock.
The idea might seem a bit over the top, especially for exchange students who have only spent a year or less away from home. But as you live in a new culture, you quickly adapt to a different way of life; meanwhile, you think life at home is no different. 90 Some friends have been apart from each other while others have become closer together.
When you arrive in an unknown place, it takes effort to adapt to your new environment. Your days are filled with new interests and busy schedule. 91 It seems strange to me that no one at university warns you about this beforehand.
The feeling of disconnection can be hard to shake off. I kept wondering how long it would take to feel normal again. Getting a part-time job would eventually help relieve my own sense of disconnection. 92
Readjusting at home has been harder than life abroad, but I’m starting to find a new normal.
A.However, everyone changes.
B.I’d lost interest in everything at home.
C.I realized I’d done two things while I was away.
D.Spending more time with family and friends also helped.
E.Most people experience these problems in their daily jobs.
F.These are the things you might worry about before studying abroad.
G.No surprise once the period is over, many exchange students feel at a loss.
When I think of my friends, I am mostly filled with love and warmth: I simply can’t wait to see them again for their affection and support. 93 In the right mood, these individuals can deliver a fun-filled evening, but at the wrong moment, they can drain (耗尽) all my goodwill.
If this sounds familiar, then you too have frenemies, who psychologists call “ambivalent relationships”. These love-hate relationships could include a friend, a parent, a colleague or even a husband or wife. Their ambivalence can come in many forms. 94 It could be a partner love-bombing you one day, but fiercely critical the next, leaving you unsure about their true feelings.
95 At the very least, you would expect them to be better for us than our negative relationships. Unfortunately, research suggests things aren’t so simple. A team at the University of Utah asked people to take a reaction-time test and they found that rapidly flashing the name of an ambivalent connection on a screen intensified stress response of participants. Another study at Brigham Young University found that simply knowing an ambivalent connection was nearby as participants prepared to give a speech was enough to send their blood pressure rocketing. 96
Cutting ties with our ambivalent connections isn’t always possible or desirable if they are deeply mixed into our social network. So, what can be done Simply being aware of the ambivalent nature of a relationship might offer some protection. We can manage our expectations and mentally prepare ourselves for the mixed feelings when interacting with frenemies. 97 As importantly, be a little more mindful of any interactions with all our ties. Show others the appreciation and respect we feel for them, for accidental neglect could be taken as a sign of indifference.
A.We hope the good in such relationships outweighs the bad.
B.If someone is too negative, you might decide to cut contact.
C.It might be a friend who is often unavailable when you need support.
D.This helps us focus on their positives while empathizing with the negatives.
E.In fact, even unconscious reminders of a frenemy can break our peace of mind.
F.After all, social connection benefits come from feeling understood and supported.
G.A handful, however, arouse different emotions — a mixture of eagerness and dread.
While volunteering at a Bolivian animal reserve, I saw all kinds of monkey bites and scratches. It was common for backpackers to show off their fresh wounds at the end of each day. 98
One morning, those volunteers with the appropriate big-animal training didn’t wake up for some reason. I happened to be there. 99 After an hour of hard walk through the jungle, one of the team members and I reached the lion’s area. The huge cat growled (咆哮) at me with a distinct sense of dislike. But that didn’t stop us from continuing our task. We entered the caged area, attached two ropes to the lion’s “collar” and begun to walk him through the jungle.
100 After only a couple of minutes, he stopped, looked back at me and growled directly into my eyes. I watched helplessly as it jumped 10 feet into the air toward me. In a second, his powerful legs wrapped around my waist and sharp teeth pressed into my forehead.
I heard my team member scream. But I couldn’t move. 101 The scream faded as I began to lose consciousness. Then, all of a sudden, I was released. The animal let me go and stepped backwards.
My team member yelled “stick your palm out toward him”. For some reason, I did. The huge cat stepped back toward me and licked (舔) it. And, that was it. He knew that I knew, who was king of the jungle. 102
A.After that we were friends.
B.But no one had a story like this.
C.But be sure you don’t risk it like I did.
D.So, I agreed to help out with the lion.
E.Completely still, I assumed the worst.
F.The lion, completely unpleased with me, stepped forward unwillingly.
G.Volunteering with animals is a great way to give back while you eco travel.
How to Make Friends in a New School
Starting with a new school can be difficult. Everything seems to be strange, and you don’t even know where to go for your own classes. 103 If you use the following skills, you can quickly turn some strangers into friends.
Be Confident
If you want to make friends, first you need to put yourself out there. Don’t be afraid to show people who you are. Talk about the things you like and do best. 104 For example, join a sports team or a club, where you can meet people who share your interests.
Be Kind and Friendly
Kindness goes a long way. When you notice someone new, try to say hello to him. Offer to help him with his work, or show him around the school. 105 Remember, everyone is nervous when they are in a new environment. A small act of kindness can make others feel more comfortable, and it also shows that you are easy to get along with.
Be a Good Listener
Listening is an important part of making friends. When someone is talking to you, look at him and keep eye contact. Don’t cut them off. 106 This will make him feel like you value his opinion and want to get to know him better.
Stay Positive
No one likes to be around someone who is always complaining. Try to stay positive, even when things go wrong. 107 If you see someone feeling sad or lost, try to cheer him up. Being positive makes you more attractive to others and helps you make friends more easily.
Making new friends takes time and effort, but it’s worth it. With a little patience and the right attitude, you’ll have a group of friends in no time.
A.Try to find someone to talk to when you feel lonely.
B.It’s also a good idea to take part in activities that interest you.
C.Ask questions to show that you are interested in what he is saying.
D.You don’t need to be popular, but you do need to be respectful.
E.It can be hard to make friends at first, but don’t let that stop you.
F.Small actions like these will build trust and make people like you.
G.People are more likely to stay around positive people.

Young Marconi loved books, especially those on science. His mind was always full of fresh ideas.
“Sounds can be made to travel, if they are given a push by electricity,” he thought.
One day he called his parents up to his workroom for a surprise. He touched a little machine, and two floors below there was the sound of a buzz (嗡嗡声).
“How did you do it ” they asked. “Your machine is so far from the sound.”
“That's right,” he said joyfully. “I have just found a wireless way to carry sound without wires.”
Later he made a wireless machine and took it to England, where the public were ready to hear new ideas. On March 27, 1899, Marconi pressed the key on his wireless at a small village on the coast of France. After a few minutes of dead silence, a sound returned from England. “Your message was received. Very good.”
Still this was not enough for the scientist. He wanted to send his messages across the Atlantic Ocean, and he would not rest until this was done.
On the night of December 12, 1901, a thin man climbed to the top of a hill on the Newfoundland coast. He waited there to receive the message from England. Three days later, Marconi told the world that he had heard messages by wireless from across the Atlantic Ocean.
His great discovery led to many more wonderful things which we enjoy today.

After my family got comfortably settled in Hotel Ramada in Bangkok, we started exploring the city. After endless hours of shopping, it was finally time to go back.
This was when the trouble started. We forgot there are two Ramada hotels in the opposite directions. Absolutely unaware of this, we started searching for the way back. Google maps suggested us the shortest route, which was just 20 minutes away by walk. 118
Bangkok felt different after sunset. Walking along the heavily-crowded roads with the dark-red sky felt beautiful. Lost in our talk, we didn’t realize that we passed onto the quieter part of the town.
119 It was closed for redecoration. Unluckily, nobody around us then spoke English. Worse still, we stepped in a local tuktuk (三轮车), which took us to an unknown area for an enormous pay. We had no clue where we were, our mobile phones nearly out of power.
120 He was a taxi driver. Recounting the day’s events proved to be a great conversation starter. We ended up talking through the way. He was so kind as to offer to drive us around for the rest of our stay. 121 For the next four days, from floating markets to the temples of Wat Pho, our trip wouldn’t have been so trouble-free without him.
Sometimes when things don’t go according to plan, I think about the stranger we met on the streets and how a tiny mistake on our part led to unexpected results. 122
A.That was when our hero arrived.
B.Our thankfulness was beyond description.
C.We reached a completely different Hotel Ramada.
D.We set off into the city with little research on transport.
E.We decided not to waste our money but our time instead.
F.He then reminded us that our hotel was just a few blocks away.
G.The trip rings as a reminder that every cloud has a silver lining.
三、人与自然(本大题共1小题)
It could be said trees naturally call for attention as they climb toward the sky with their arms outstretched. 123 As we bustle through our own day-to-day lives, trees seem to play the role of a backdrop (背景).
Trees play an important role in improving the quality and health of our lives, our homes, and our planet. 124 But that stillness is not synonymous (同义的) with laziness. Trees are rarely lazy. In fact, they are workhorses of the environment as the impact of their hard work carries miles farther than the ground in which they stand.
Globally, trees are the most scalable and cost-effective tool in the fight against climate change. Trees clean the air and absorb carbon dioxide. 125 For example, ring-tailed lemurs (环尾狐猴) are considered one of the most endangered creatures on the planet. A big reason is that half of the forests they depend on in Madagascar off the East coast of Africa were cut down. Lemurs aren’t alone when it comes to a dependency on trees. 126
Where there’s a need, trees can help fill it. In some communities, trees are an important food source. In others, they’re a symbol of resilience (恢复力) following a damaging tragedy. When planted near streams and rivers, they clean the water. 127 That’s right, when planted in the right place, a tree can help you bring down energy costs for your home.
So as springtime arrives once again, take a moment and appreciate all a tree can be.
A.Yet, it’s still easy for us to ignore them.
B.Rooted to a single spot, they appear still.
C.They foster biodiversity and support critical habitats.
D.We know there’s never been a more important time for trees.
E.And a bonus for homeowners: trees can even save your money.
F.Trees are home to 80% of all animals, plants, and insects that live on land.
G.Being around trees can improve a person’s mental health and creativity.

A little boy had the job of coming to school early each day to start the fire and warm the room before his teacher and classmates arrived. One morning they arrived to find the schoolhouse swallowed (吞没) up by the fire. They dragged the dying boy out, and he was rushed to the hospital immediately.
From his bed the little boy faintly heard the doctor tell his mother that her son would surely die, because the terrible fire had destroyed so much flesh in the lower part of his body. But the brave boy didn’t want to die. He made up his mind that he would survive. To the amazement of the doctor, he did. When the danger was past, he again heard the mother was told that he would be a lifetime disability. Once more the boy made up his mind. He would walk. But unfortunately from the waist down, he had no motor ability.
Then he was allowed to leave the hospital. Every day his mother would massage (按摩) his legs, but there was still no feeling, no control. Yet his determination that he would walk was as strong as ever.
One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard. He threw himself from the wheelchair. He pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He worked his way to the fence. With great effort, he raised himself up on the fence. Then, stake by stake, he began dragging himself along the fence, strongly believing that he would walk. He started to do this every day until he wore a smooth path all around the yard beside the fence.
Through his iron persistence (坚持) and strong determination, he did develop the ability to stand, then walk and finally to run. Later in college he made the track team. Still in Madison Square Garden this young man, Dr. Glenn Cunningham, who was not expected to survive, ran the world’s fastest mile!
