In August 2024, two high school students, Rosa Mendoza Sosa and Shanni Valeria Mora Fajardo, from Mexico were awarded the Diploma of Excellence at the 2024 Stockholm Junior Water Prize. It is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who have developed research projects that can help solve major water challenges. The competition attracts tens of thousands of students from about 35 countries each year.
The two girls developed a process to efficiently reuse inked water, a common side product in various industries, making it a useful resource for growing vegetables. This method not only helps to save water but also promotes green agriculture.
The project idea was inspired by the girls’ link with their community’s textile heritage. “In our village, textiles are not just products; they are a symbol of our traditions, made with techniques passed down through generations,” explained Sosa, “but the use of artificial dyes (染料)mled to the direct disposal of dirty water into our environment.” This threatened their local water bodies and soil, endangering both the locals’ health and their environmentally friendly practices.
Faced with this dilemma, they made a filtration(过滤)system at home with materials from their area. They filled four containers with different kinds of materials, including cotton, charcoal, gravel, and sand. Then they measured pH levels and coloration before and after filtration. They noted changes in pH values, which now ranged from 7 to 8, making the water safe to drink.
The filtered water was then used to help spinach and radish seeds grow, and more tests are being planned for other appropriate vegetables. “By recycling and using water again, we can keep the environment clean while preserving our heritage,” said Sosa.
24. What was the main achievement of the two Mexican girls
A. Developing water testing equipment. B. Inventing new textile dyeing techniques.
C. Establishing a preservation organization. D. Recycling inked water for green agriculture.
25. What inspired the two girls’ project
A. The motivation to save water. B. The pollution caused by textile.
C. The demand for useful resources. D. The science competition held by school.
26. Why did the girls measure the pH levels of the filtrated water
A. To compare the water environment. B. To record the water quality changes.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the system. D. To find out suitable materials for filtration.
27. Which statement best describes the impact of the project
A. It benefits ecological and cultural protection.
B. It promotes international water competitions.
C. It prioritizes industrial profits over traditions.
D. It addresses the local government’s strategies.
C
Many travellers are familiar with the UNESCO’s World Heritage List. However, less is known about the organization’s List of World Heritage in Danger. It currently specifies 53 World Heritage sites under threat of “serious and specific dangers” due to factors such as climate change, armed conflict, and development pressures. The accelerated degeneration of these cultural treasures is a reality that should concern the world, since the younger generation may not have the opportunity to visit them.
For this reason, insurance company Budget Direct, and NeoMam Studios, a creative studio based in the UK, have created a series of GIFs to restore World Heritage sites and demonstrate what these ruins would have looked like if they had been preserved.
Drawing attention to sites at risk, the project aims to give everyone the opportunity to visit these sites virtually. It started with in-depth research around the sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger. Based on the results, the team made a selection according to two main criteria: First, they were man-made places. Second, they still had standing elements. Focusing on the selected sites, the team worked with architects Jelena Popovic and Keremcan Kirilmaz and industrial designer Erdem Batirbek to research and illustrate six of these legendary locations.
In this series of GIFs, six sites are digitally restored to their former glory. They include Hatra in Iraq, Leptis Magna in Libya, Palmyra in Syria, Portobelo-San Lorenzo in Panama, Nan Madol in the Federated States of Micronesia as well as the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls.
Time does not stand still, and neither does technology. Thanks to these photorealistic images and electronic devices, we can travel, without leaving home, to those places that, whatever their future may be, will always be part of the collective memory.

A. Natural sites that had standing elements.
B. Man-made sites that had standing elements.
C. Natural sites that were damaged severely.
D. Man-made sites that were destroyed completely.
31. What does the author try to convey in the last paragraph

Restricting meals to early in the day did not affect weight among overweight adults with prediabetes or diabetes(糖尿病), according to a research presented at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2020.
“We have wondered for a long time if when one eats during the day affects the way the body uses and stores energy,” said study author Nisa M. Maruthur, associate professor of medicine in Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “Most previous studies have not controlled the number of calories, so it wasn't clear if people who ate earlier just ate fewer calories. In this study, the only thing we changed was the time of eating in the day.”
Maruthur and colleagues followed 41 overweight adults in a 12-week study. Most participants(参与者)(90%)were African American women with prediabetes or diabetes, and average age of 59 years. Twenty-one of the adults followed a time-restricted eating pattern, limiting eating to specific hours of the day and ate 80% of their calories before 1 pm. The remaining 20 participants ate at usual times during a 12-hour window, consuming half of their daily calories after 5 pm for the entire 12 weeks. All participants consumed the same pre-prepared, healthy meals provided for the study. Weight and blood pressure were measured at the beginning of the study;then at 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks.
The analysis found that people in both groups lost weight and had decreased blood pressure no matter when they ate. "We thought that the time-restricted group would lose more weight,” Maruthur said. “Yet that didn't happen. We did not see any difference in weight loss for those who ate most of their calories earlier versus later in the day. We did not see any effects on blood pressure either.”
The researchers are now collecting more detailed information on blood pressure recorded over 24 hours, and they will bring this information together with the results of a study on the effects of time-restricted feeding on blood sugar, insulin(胰岛素)and other hormones and making analyses on the data. "Together, these findings will help us to more fully understand the effects of time-restricted eating on cardiometabolic(心血管代谢)health," Maruthur said.
32. What made this study different from earlier ones
A. Participants' age. B. Participants' daily eating time
C. The number of participants. D. Research members.
33. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. Research procedure. B. Research result.
C. Research purpose. D. Research institution.
34. What do we know from Maruthur's words in paragraph 4
A. Blood pressure is connected with eating time.
B. Taking in less calories earlier makes for weight loss.
C. Eat calories earlier doesn't affect weight loss.
D. Eating time determines your effect of losing weight.
35. What may the researchers do next according to the last paragraph
A. Stop research. B. Announce findings.
C. Write essays. D. Analyze data.

六、书面表达
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One Thursday in April, I was awakened by the noise of my parents talking and making breakfast. My old brother and sister were running around, trying to put their things together for school.
I put on the new skirt I had bought over the weekend while thinking about how I was going to make my day perfect. Then my mom offered to walk me to school instead of my dad driving me. She said she wanted to walk for exercise, so I thought it would be fine. Although my dad said he wanted to drive me, my mom and I both agreed to walk.
As we were walking down the hill to my school, we chatted about interesting things in my wonderful school life, our family’s next vacation, and so on. We felt so relaxed and excited. Holding hands, we crossed the crosswalk to get to my school, and that was when a bad thing happened. A car lost control and came fast towards us. Just at that moment, my mom tried to save me using all of her strength. She made it. She pushed me out of the way.
But when I turned around, I saw my mom flying through the air. For me, everything was in slow motion. Finally , my mom hit her head , and it started to bleed. I shouted and cried uncontrollably while some people called my dad and the police. Soon, I saw my dad rushing down the street in his car with the most scared look on his face.
He and I followed the ambulance to the hospital. While we waited in the waiting room, I was clear that my happy family suddenly had a terrible change. I felt like this couldn’t be happening to me. I was shocked, frightened, hopeless and helpless. I was so worried about my mom. I just hoped she could survive the accident. When the nurse finally came to us, I was scared of what I was going to see.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】10. A 11. C 12. B
原文:New York city’s road pricing is the first of its kind in the US. So, what is road pricing Well, it’s a fee charged per car with the goal of discouraging driving. So as of January 5th, driving into Manhattan got even pricier. Passenger vehicles now pay $9 during peak hours and 2.25 during off-peak hours overnight to enter Manhattan each day. Trucks will also be charged fees for peak and off-peak hours for each trip into Manhattan.
Road pricing has been a debated topic concept there for decades as early as the 1950s. Those in favor of road pricing say it would reduce traffic in one of the world’s densest and busiest areas, while also reducing pollution and providing a source of income for city projects. On the other hand, critics are saying that it will direct business away from this city, and it’s an unnecessary burden on those who travel to and from work by car every day.

原文:M: Hey, aren’t you Sarah We volunteered together in Brazil last year.
W: That’s right, Alex! How have you been since then
M: Doing well, thanks. How was your trip to Italy You were heading there after Brazil.
W: Italy was a dream. The contrast to my everyday life in New York was striking.
M: What did you enjoy most in Italy
W: The rich history and art. The way they cherish and maintain their historical sites is remarkable.
M: Yeah, Italy is known for its cultural heritage.
W: True. And the importance they give to leisure and enjoying life is so different from my hometown. Back home, it’s all about grabbing a quick light salad for lunch. That’s more my sister Kelly’s taste than mine.
M: I’ve never been much of a salad person myself. I prefer something heartier.
W: Oh, then you’d prefer the food in the northern regions of Italy. They have more creamy and cheesy dishes. But they also have some spicy options down south.
M: Huh, maybe I should give it a try someday. Did you do anything else there
W: Right before leaving for Greece, I took a boat tour around the Amalfi Coast. The views were breathtaking.
M: Did you explore any local activities
W: Yes, I attended a wine-tasting session in Tuscany. It was delightful.

【答案】32. B 33. A 34. C 35. D

【答案】Paragraph 1:
But I ran and hugged my mom. Finding she was still not awake, I cried hard. In the following days, my dad, my sister, my brother and I made all efforts to look after her. We patiently fed her and talked to her, and we stayed up in turn to accompany her. Amazingly, one morning, my mom waked up and we cried with great happiness. After a few more days of great care, my mom was much better.
Paragraph 2:
Several weeks later, the doctor said my mom could go home. We then all made preparations for mom’s return and we couldn’t wait to see her at home again. When I got home from school that day, I was so excited and gave her a big hug. Seeing that my mom could walk freely again, all my family clapped their hands. At this moment, I realized how great my mom had been and that with love and support to each other, a family could be warmer and happier than ever.
