Lakshmi spends hours every day digging up large yams (山药) that grow under the soil. Some yams weigh 5 kg and are almost as tall as she is. Lakshmi says this work is very hard.
Lakshmi lives in Kerala, a state in southern India. She is part of an all-women group called Noorang. The women in Noorang belong to one of Kerala’s oldest tribes (部落). They are trying to save yams. These yams have grown on their land for many years.
But yams are no longer a main diet among tribal communities in Kerala due to their rapidly changing lifestyle. Young people have many other foods to eat, like rice and wheat. They do not think yams are special anymore.
Bad weather also hurts yam harvests. In the past, floods and landslides caused many yams to die. Recently, there was a sharp decline in lands dedicated to yam production in Kerala, with many of these being changed to the more rubber cultivation instead.
“The women grow yams to feed their families and to keep these rare yams from disappearing,” says Lakshmi. “We believe yams can cure some illnesses,” says Shantha, another member of Noorang. “Many mothers here think yams are good for the stomach.”
Since 2022, the Noorang group has brought back 180 kinds of wild yams. They have fifteen kinds of wild yams, three kinds of elephant yams, eight kinds of Colocasias, seven kinds of sweet potatoes, and one kind of Chinese potato. “Our goal is to save rare yams and grow more,” says Sarasu, a member of Noorang.
4. What is the Noorang’s main task
A. Getting more people to eat yams. B. Selling yams for more profits.
C. Protecting ancient types of yams. D. Growing yams instead of rubber.
5. Why are yams no longer a main diet for locals
A. People didn’t realize their nutrition.
B. Local people’s lifestyle has changed.
C. Yams have gone from the region.
D. Yams are now a fancy food.
6. What caused yam production to drop greatly recently
A. Flooding and deadly landslides. B. A ban on yam cultivation.
C. The introduction of new yams. D. The shift to rubber cultivation.
7. What is the main idea of the last paragraph
A. The project’s great achievement. B. The market prediction of yams.
C The added nutrition to the variety. D. The project ‘s great motivation.

Electronic devices like smartphones and laptops have become important in modern life, but their production and treatment come with significant environmental costs. E-waste is now the fastest-growing waste stream globally, with millions of tons thrown yearly. Many consumers are unaware that harmful treatment leads to chemicals like lead (铅) and mercury (水银) polluting soil and water.
The environmental impact begins long before treatment. Mining raw materials for electronics causes water pollution. Production consumes vast energy, increasing carbon emissions. When devices are thrown improperly, they release dangerous chemicals, harming ecosystems and human health.
Recycling offers a solution by recovering valuable metals (gold, silver) and reducing the need for new mining. However, only a small part of e-waste is properly recycled. Governments and producers must improve recycling facilities and adopt “Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)” policies, ensuring companies manage their products’ end-of-life impacts. Consumers also play a key role in choosing energy-efficient devices, repairing and recycling through typical programs instead of replacing electronics.
Proper practices like producers’ take-back programs can lengthen products’ life. Public awareness campaigns are critical to drive positive changes. While no single solution can solve e-waste entirely, shared action—from policymakers, industries, and individuals — can significantly reduce its hidden costs.
8. Which aspect of e-waste causes environmental problems
A. Improper treatment. B. Large quantity.
C. Wide range. D. Great demand.
9. What can be inferred about recycling e-waste
A. Governments ban e-waste.
B. E-waste is recycled properly.
C. Consumers prefer to replace devices.
D. Recycling reduces raw materials’ use.
10. What does EPR require people to do
A. Produce cheaper devices.
B. Recycle products after use.
C. Increase product promotion.
D. Use harmless production materials.
11. What is the purpose of this article
A. To describe devices’ history.
B. To promote smartphone models.
C. To criticize electronic producers.
D. To explain and offer e-waste solutions.

When Francis Csedrik was eight, he recalled some vivid events from age four, like falling on the floor. Yet he remembered nothing of a family trip to the Philippines at age three — a classic example of childhood memory loss. Most adults keep no memories of their lives for the first 3.5 years, says Patricia Bauer, an Emory University psychologist.
Scientists have long studied why early memories disappear. At the beginning, they believed young brains couldn’t form lasting memories. But 1980s research showed even toddlers (学步孩童) keep sound memories. Bauer’s studies show that while 7-year-olds recall over 60% of early events,8- or 9-year-olds remember less than 40%, marking the beginning of memory loss. “The less mature (成熟的) brain structures cause this loss,” Bauer explains. Before age four, memory systems function weakly. Yet some memories survive, particularly significant ones. Professor Carole Peterson found children remember damaging events, like emergency room visits, even a decade later. Francis vividly recalled his leg injury at four when he was eight, while one child in Peterson’s study remembered crying at 18 months when his brother was born.
Other factors also help to preserve some memories. Parents play a key role in helping maintain memories. Research shows that when a parent helps a child give shape and structure and context to a memory, it’s less likely to disappear. Francis’s parents consolidate Francis’s leg injury memory through retelling and school writing. Interestingly, a person’s life story usually includes events that should have been lost to childhood memory loss. That’s because when our own memories start to fail, Peterson says, we rely on family members, photo albums and videos to restore them.
Such findings influence courts, where child witnesses were once regarded as unreliable. Peterson notes children recall accurately if questioned properly. Keeping dangerous experiences also aids survival. For Francis, some memories disappeared — but others, like his injury, remained sharp. “I’ll always remember that day,” he said. His mother agreed: it’s a lesson in caution, kept through retelling.
12. How does the author start the text
A By giving a definition.
B. By explaining an opinion.
C. By giving a specific example.
D. By presenting the background.
13. What causes childhood memory loss according to Bauer
A. Few strong memories.
B. Immature brain structures.
C. Inability to form memories.
D. Low interest in memories.
14. What does the underlined word “consolidate” probably mean in Paragraph 3
A. Forget. B. Reduce.
C. Weaken. D. Strengthen.
15. What’s the best title of the text
A. Courts Use Children as Witnesses
B. Emotional Memories Count Greatly
C. Secrets Behind Childhood Memory
D. Parents Help Children to Remember

One day as the final exam was approaching, John nervously turned to Tom and said, “Hey, Tom, you know I’m not good at studying. Could you help me cheat during the exam I promise I’ll make it up to you.”
Tom was taken aback. He had always believed in the importance of honesty and hard work. He knew that cheating was wrong, but he also didn’t want to hurt John’s feelings. After a moment of hesitation, Tom replied, “John, I understand that the final exam can be stressful, but cheating is not the right way to deal with it. We should be honest and work hard to earn our grades.”
John looked disappointed but didn’t say anything. The day of the exam arrived, and as expected, John struggled. He looked at Tom’s desk several times, hoping for a glimpse (瞥见) of the answers, but Tom was focused on his own paper, determined to do his best. As the exam progressed, John became more and more anxious. He kept tapping his pencil nervously and glancing around the room, hoping to catch a glimpse of someone else’s answers. At one point, he even tried to signal Tom again, but Tom just shook his head slightly. John’s frustration grew, and he felt a knot in his stomach. He realized that he had put himself in this position by not studying, and he couldn’t blame anyone else for it. When the exam finally ended, John sighed heavily and sat in his chair. He knew he had failed, but he also knew that cheating wouldn’t make him any smarter.
From that day on, John began to take his studies more seriously. He approached Tom after school and asked for help, promising to put in the effort. Tom agreed, and they started studying together every evening. John slowly improved as he began to understand the material better. He even attended extra tutoring sessions and spent more time reviewing his notes. By the time the next exam came around, John was much more confident. He managed to pass with a good grade, and he felt a sense of pride and accomplishment. He realized that hard work and honesty were far more rewarding than cheating. Tom was proud of John’s progress, and their friendship grew stronger as they continued to support each other.
