Peer (同伴) Assisted Study Sessions (PASS) is a peer-facilitated learning programme available to students enrolled (注册) in most core units of study in our business school.
PASS involves weekly sessions where you work in groups to tackle specially prepared problem sets, based around a unit of study you’re enrolled in.
PASS doesn’t re-teach or deliver new content. It’s an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the key points from lecture materials while you are applying your skills to solve problems.
You work interactively with your peers. As a peer group, you decide what is covered in each session. That way, PASS directly responds to your needs and feedback.
Registration in Term 2 will open at 9 am, 21 September 2022.
Waiting lists
If a session is full, you can register for the waiting list. We will email you if a place becomes available or if a new session is to be held.
When you are placed on a waiting list, we will email you a number which tells you where you are on the list. If you are close to the front of the list, you have a good chance of gaining a place in the programme in the near future.
Deregistering
If you miss two PASS sessions in a row, you will be deregistered and your place will be given to someone on the waiting list. Make sure you fill in the attendance sheet at each session to record your attendance.
You’ll be informed by email if you are being deregistered as a result of missing sessions. If you believe you have received the email in error, email the PASS office at passoffice@umbs. edu..

A.attend new lectures B.decide their own schedules

By age 14, Dorothy Jean Tillman had obtained an associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degree. Despite the impressive achievements, Tillman remembers turning to her mother and saying, “I think I want to pursue a doctorate degree.”
Her mother, Jimalita Tillman, was surprised. Dorothy was a year into launching a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) camp startup, and she was looking for funding for the organization. She was busy. But after Dorothy explained that her mission was to positively impact young people when it came to their mental health, Jimalita understood and lent her support.
Jimalita said she was proud of her daughter. “I knew what it took for her to go through that. She had to sacrifice (牺牲) a lot. She emerged as a leader without fear, showing them how to tackle online schooling.”
From a young age, Dorothy has been outstanding in her academic pursuits. By age 7, she was already doing high school work. At that point, she started to take college level module (模拟) tests and apply the credits toward higher education.
“It was always mentally difficult to handle, especially at such a young age. When you get out of college, you’re thinking, ‘what do I do next ’ Now I am able to sit in the comfortability of being a teenager and being OK with the fact that I don’t have to figure out what comes next,” Dorothy said.
She studied integrated behavioural health at Arizona State University. For her dissertation (论文), she explored the stigma (耻辱) that prevents university students from getting mental health treatment.
In addition to her school work, Dorothy also devotes her time to running the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute, which inspires hundreds of underserved young people in Chicago, as well as abroad in countries like Ghana and South Africa, to pursue STEAM careers. The programme includes guest speakers and open conversations around each of the five areas of STEAM.

Move over millennials (千禧一代), here comes Generation Z, today’s youngest group.
Born in 1995 or later, a lot of Gen Z-ers are entering into adulthood and will soon join the workforce. People of Generation Z have grown up with the internet. Policy makers, sociologists, as well as employers and marketers, are trying their best to understand these young people. So, how should we pin down the Gen Z-ers
Most people will agree that the single biggest difference between Gen Z and other generations is how connected they are. This is a group of people who were hooked up to social media as soon as they were born. A recent Guardian article says that the average teenager in the UK has at least 150 followers on Instagram and spends around half an hour a day on Snapchat, an image messaging app. “We are the first true digital natives,” Hannah Payne, an 18-year-old UCLA student and lifestyle blogger. “I can almost create a document, edit it, post a photo on Instagram and talk on the phone at the same time, all from the user-friendly interface (界面) of my iPhone.
The Guardian also notes that young people in the UK are becoming more active in politics. Voting is just one way of making one’s voice heard. Most of Generation Z are still too young to vote, says the Guardian. Instead of party politics, they focus more on single-topic issues such as feminism (男女平等) or climate change. And “much of the civil engagement and organizing they do takes place on social media rather than through traditional political structures,” according to the newspaper.
28.The underlined phrase “pin down” in the second paragraph can be replaced by ______.
A.set an example to B.have an interest in
C.give an explanation for D.make a decision on
29.The biggest difference between Generation Z and other generations lies in _________.
A.how linked they are
B.how enthusiastic they are
C.how they communicate with each other
D.how many hours they spend on the Internet
30.What do Instagram and Snapchat have in common
A.They are newly-created cellphones.
B.They are popular among millennials.
C.They are online games invented by teenagers.
D.They are applications applauded by teenagers.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph
A.Generation Z have great interest in politics.
B.Most Gen Z-ers haven’t entered the political field.
C.Voting is the only way of making yourself noticed.
D.Voting on social media is the same as voting through traditional ways.
D
The circadian clock, more commonly known as the body clock, is an internal system that tells our bodies when it’s time to go to sleep and when it’s time to wake up. Scientists track this clock by measuring the amount of melatonin (褪黑激素) circulating in a person’s blood at any given time.
In a healthy sleeper, melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime, stay high through the night, and then settle back down when it’s time to wake up.
In our modern society, however, most of us stay up many hours past sunset and would probably sleep in may hours after sunrise if we could. And the trouble is, your melatonin levels may still be high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, which leads to grogginess. It may also have other health consequences as well, such as diabetes (糖尿病),overweight and heart disease.
Professor Kenneth Wright of the University of Colorado in the US wanted to see if our body clocks can be reset by a short stay in nature. His team recruited (招募) 14 physically active volunteers in their 20s and 30s. Nine went on a weekend camping trip, while the other five stayed home.
At the end of the weekend, the researchers reported that in just two days, the campers’ body clocks had shifted to that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip. By comparison, the body clocks of the group that stayed home shifted even later over the course of the weekend.
“This tells us we can reset our clocks fast,” Wright said.
32.Which of the following is TRUE about melatonin
A.When melatonin levels are high, we may feel very excited.
B.When melatonin levels are low, it’s time to go to sleep.
C.The amount of melatonin affects our body clock.
D.Melatonin tells us when to go to sleep and to wake up.

A.Sleepiness. B.Headache. C.Stomachache. D.Homesickness.

A.control the level of melatonin B.help shift the campers’ body clocks
C.increase the amount of melatonin D.balance the hours of sleeping and waking up
35.What may be the best title for the text

Last Sunday, when I was reading a book and had just come to the most interesting part, my little brother, Tex, rushed into my room.
“Look at these cool paper airplanes I have made!” Tex shouted, throwing one directly at my head.
Annoyed, I asked him to be quiet, so I could continue reading.
“Ooh! I want to read, too!” said Tex.
He climbed onto my bed and eagerly asked if I could read the book to him. I replied that I didn’t want to read aloud. Sensing my bad mood, Tex decided to cheer me up. He dashed out of the room and returned a minute later with a basket full of stuffed animals.
“A teddy bear picnic ” he asked.
“No, Tex. Not today.” I refused.
I went to the living room and threw myself into a chair. Tex stood in the doorway, very disappointed and embarrassed. Although I knew Tex was just trying to help, I couldn’t shake off my bad mood.
Just then, my friend Ollie arrived. He had a brand-new basketball and suggested that we head to the park and try it out. I sighed and lied that I was too busy. Curious about my strange behavior, Ollie asked what had happened. I told him Tex had interrupted my reading and for some unknown reason, it had put me in a really bad mood. Ollie then mentioned that when he was in a bad mood, he tried to engage in some activities in a new environment.
“I’d love to explore a tropical island!” I joked.
“Not that kind of activity!” Ollie protested. “I mean skateboarding, playing basketball, or just going out for a walk. Exercise will make you feel e on!”
Exercise was the last thing I wanted to do when I felt unhappy. But it was hard to turn down his offer.
“Maybe you are right.” I sighed, again.

根据第二段中“melatonin levels rise a few hours before bedtime, stay high through the night(褪黑激素水平在睡前几个小时上升,整晚都保持在高位)”和第三段中“And the trouble is, your melatonin levels may still be high when your alarm clock goes off in the morning, which leads to grogginess. It may also have other health consequences as well, such as diabetes (糖尿病), overweight and heart disease. (问题是,早上闹钟响的时候,你的褪黑激素水平可能仍然很高,这会导致grogginess。它还可能对健康产生其他影响,如糖尿病、超重和心脏病。)”可知,早上闹钟响的时候,褪黑激素水平高,会导致人不清醒,由此可推知,grogginess意为“困倦,嗜睡”,与A项“Sleepiness (困倦)”意思相近。故选A项。
根据倒数第二段中“At the end of the weekend, the researchers reported that in just two days, the campers’ body clocks had shifted to that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip. (周末结束时,研究人员报告说,仅仅两天时间,露营者的生物钟就发生了变化,他们的褪黑激素水平开始比出发前提前一个多小时上升。)”可知,露营可以帮助露营者调整生物钟。故选B项。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合倒数第二段中“At the end of the weekend, the researchers reported that in just two days, the campers’ body clocks had shifted to that their melatonin levels began to rise more than an hour earlier than they did before they left on the trip. (周末结束时,研究人员报告说,仅仅两天时间,露营者的生物钟就发生了变化,他们的褪黑激素水平开始比出发前提前一个多小时上升。)”可知,文章主要介绍了生物钟以及褪黑激素对生物钟的影响,同时探讨了现代生活方式对生物钟的干扰,以及通过露营等方式如何快速调整生物钟,C项“Reset your body clock (调整你的生物钟)”能够概括文章中心主旨,适合作为标题使用。故选C项。

40.根据空前“We should have at least six to eight hours of sleep every day. It helps in improving our immune (免疫) system and protects us against diseases.(我们每天至少应该有6到8个小时的睡眠。它有助于改善我们的免疫系统,保护我们抵抗疾病。)”可知我们应该保障充足的睡眠,根据空后“This, in turn, gives us new goals of health and fitness.(这反过来又给了我们健康和健身的新目标。)”

根据“making him the second winner from China to earn the highest honor in the field of architecture(使他成为来自中国第二位获得该建筑领域最高荣誉的人)”可知,刘家琨是第二位获得该荣誉的中国获奖者,王澍是在2012年获奖的,所以此处使用介词表示“在……之后”,故填after。
58.考查副词。句意:刘家琨1956年出生于成都,此后一直生活和工作在四川,他一直拒绝像其他人一样去北京和上海这样的城市工作,而是选择扎根成都。此处应填入副词做状语修饰动词refuses,consistent的副词形式是consistently,故填consistently。
59.考查非谓语动词。句意:同上。choose to do sth为固定短语,意为“选择做某事”,所以此处应填入动词不定式,故填to remain。
根据空前的介词of可知,此处应填入名词,作宾语,relax的名词形式是relaxation,a sense of relaxation意为“一种放松感”,故填relaxation。

When we got on our bikes and were ready to leave, Tex looked up at Ollie with eager eyes. “Can I come too ” he asked, clutching his teddy bear tightly. I hesitated, still irritated, but Ollie smiled warmly. “Of course! We need someone to cheer for us,” he replied. Tex’s face brightened instantly, and he dashed to grab his tiny bicycle. Watching his excitement, I felt a pang of guilt. After all, he only wanted to spend time with me. As we cycled toward the park, Tex chattered happily about his paper airplanes, and I found myself slowly relaxing.
Tex’s eyes lit up, and he promised without a second thought. At the park, Ollie taught him to dribble the basketball while I watched. Tex stumbled but laughed each time he missed. His pure joy was infectious. Soon, I joined them, passing the ball to Tex and cheering when he made his first basket. The frustration from earlier melted away. As the sun set, we sat on the grass, sharing snacks. Tex hugged me and whispered, “This is the best day ever!” I realized then that sometimes, stepping away from your own mood and embracing others’ happiness is the perfect remedy.

Text 10:
National Hugging Day first started on January 21, 1986. It was created by an American called Kevin Zaborney. He chose January 21 as it fell between the New Year’s holiday and Valentine’s Day, when he found people were generally in low spirits. He created the day to promote the emotional benefits of hugging. This celebration has moved beyond America’s borders and people now celebrate the festival in Australia, Canada, England, Germany and Russia. In America, National Hugging Day is big in schools and hospitals. It is a wonderful way of letting people know how you feel about the man of showing you care. So, on this National Hugging Day, give everyone a big hug and make them feel good! A word of advice-ask before you hug! There is a lot of research that shows hugging is good for us. Dr. Jay Gordon wrote a book called Brighter Baby, which said hugging a child every day is more likely to make him or her more intelligent. Unlike kissing, hugging is acceptable in most societies. It can be a form of greeting between friends, a way of celebrating a victory, or a way of showing your support for someone.

If you believe you have received the email in error, email the PASS office at passoffice@umbs. edu..

A.Generation Z have great interest in politics.
B.Most Gen Z-ers haven’t entered the political field.
C.Voting is the only way of making yourself noticed.
D.Voting on social media is the same as voting through traditional ways.
