一、阅读理解
Dorothy lived with her uncle Henry and aunt Em who were both farmers. Their house had only four walls, a floor and a small space under the floor to protect them from powerful winds. The house was in the middle of poor land with strong sunlight and few plants. Aunt Em used to be young and cheerful, but the sun and wind had taken away her happiness. Uncle Henry also looked serious and strict. Only Toto, a little black dog with shiny hair and bright eyes, could bring laughter into Dorothy’s life.
One day, they heard low sounds of wind from both the north and the south. Uncle Henry realized a strong wind was coming. He rushed to protect the animals while Aunt Em hurried Dorothy to the basement. Suddenly, the house began to rock and rise to the air. In the center, the wind blew loudly, but Dorothy found herself riding safely on the rising house.
Frightened, Toto ran around the room until Dorothy caught him and protected him from falling through the open door. She closed it carefully to avoid further danger. As hours passed, Dorothy slowly got over her fear. She finally fell asleep on her bed with Toto by her side. The wind had set Dorothy’s house down gently in a beautiful country.
As she looked around, she saw green grass, fruitful trees, and colourful flowers.Birds with special feathers sang and flew around. As she stood enjoying the beautiful views, a group of strangely dressed people came near. As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese, and Spanish, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6, 000-7, 000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization(UNESCO).
To prevent language loss, scholars (学者) from a number of organizations—UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have been recording dying languages and the cultures for many years.
Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who studies the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Recording the Thangmi language and culture is just a beginning for Turin. He hopes to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he does not simply record these voices before they disappear.
At the University of Cambridge, Turin discovered a lot of important materials—including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.
Now, through the two organizations that he has founded—the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project—Turin has started a campaign to make such documents (文献), found in libraries and stores around the world, not just for scholars but for the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.

The earth looks like a huge blue planet from the space because most of it is covered with sea water, but what happens if the sea isn't clear and clean anymore Ocean pollution is a serious problem. It affects many kinds of ocean life. Ocean pollution affects people, too.
Oceans cover about 70 percent of Earth’s surface. Many fish and animals live in them. Unfortunately, pollution is doing harm to the ocean life in the sea. Toxic (有毒的) wastes are one kind of pollution. These toxic wastes come from factories, dustbins, mines (矿) and so on. Farms’ chemical waste in the fields comes into the ocean at last, too. Toxic waste affects the whole food chain. For example, if a small fish ate some toxic things, the small fish would become toxic. Then, if a larger fish ate the small fish, it would also become toxic. People who eat the big fish could get very sick from the polluted seafood.
Some scientists believe that over 80% of ocean pollution comes from people on land. Much of this pollution has come about in the last half-century. People used to think that the ocean was so big that it could not become polluted. Scientists have studied ocean pollution, so people now understand how harmful it is. Cleaning up ocean pollution will take a huge effort, but it will be worth it because we have only one earth.

My dream
I want to be an astronaut. I love looking at the stars and space. I think it’s where we can learn a lot about life.
I have two reasons for this dream. First, I like hearing about astronauts and their exciting trips in space. They make me want to learn more. Second, I want to help find new things that can help everyone.
To make my dream come true, I will study hard in science and math. These subjects are important for exploring space. I will also join a club about stars and take part in science events. I will read books about space and keep up with the latest news about space travel.
Dreams are like the brightest stars. They show us the way to our goals. I will work hard to touch the stars and make my dream happen.
