Zhu Yanjun is a special worker. He was born in Jingning, Gansu. Like many other people, he works in different cities. But what made him different was his strong love for reading poetry and books.
In early February, Zhu won the second prize in the yearly Chinese Poetry Competition (中国诗词大会) hosted by CCTV.
Zhu only had a middle school education. His love for reading was encouraged by his Chinese teacher who has published (发表) many articles in magazines. “I also wanted to publish stories, so I started to read, and borrowed books from my friends and classmates,” he told China Daily.
Although Zhu later regretted putting an early end to his schooling, he did not stop his poetry journey. He worked at different construction sites (建筑工地) in more than 10 cities. Over the years, he has read thousands of poems and he can recite (背诵) them.
Reading poetry helps Zhu stay calm and he solves his problems actively. “Whenever I face any difficulty, I think of Chairman Mao’s words, ‘Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets his mind to it’,” he told China Daily.

An Experience of Helping Others
Two years ago I helped a 9-year-old boy to learn English. He came from a poor family. His parents had no money to pay for after-school English classes. I told him not to worry about the money and that I would help him for free. I practiced speaking English with him twice a week, gave him lots of free English books and taught him how to make good use of them.
After a year of practicing, he told me that he got an A in an English test and he loved English. What touched me wasn’t that good result, but that he understood why he should learn hard—nothing comes easily. Because of his hard work and my kindness, his English improved a lot. From that experience of helping him, I also learned: Never stop doing little things for others. Sometimes those little things will have a big place in their hearts.
