Will Gladstone, an amateur birder, was in his 5th-grade science class when he first heard of the blue-footed booby, a beautiful, eye-catching bird. He learned that the population of this particular bird was in decline. Will decided to raise money to support conservation efforts. As he was brainstorming ideas, he looked down at his feet, and suddenly he had an idea. Feet, he thought, blue feet! He decided to sell bright blue socks and donate the money to environmental organizations trying to help the birds. His younger brother Matty joined him in his effort as his partner. The boys started the Blue Feet Foundation (BFF) in 2016.
In the beginning, it was a challenge for the boys to gather support for their cause. They decided to ask a better-known conservation organization to sponsor them. However, none were willing to do so. “They didn’t agree to it because we were just kids,” says Will.
Although this was discouraging, the two persevered. Finally, they came across an organization they hadn’t heard of before: the Galapagos Conservancy (GC). Its mission was to support conservation in the Galapagos Islands. These islands are home to about half of the world’s blue-footed boobies. They offered to highlight the foundation in the protection’s newsletter. It boosted the BFF’s credibility.
Four years later, their hard work paid off. They amassed over 18,000 Instagram followers and 10,000 Facebook followers. They sold 18,000 pairs of socks, sending them all across the globe. Orders have come from 50 different countries. If you visit the picture gallery on their website, you’ll also see blue socks being modeled by a few famous people, including members of the Blue Man Group and a Boston Bruins hockey player.
Although the population of these birds in the Galapagos has declined significantly over the past 20 years, we have seen some hopeful signs. These include an increase in young birds. However, there is still work to be done. Although the decline in population is slowing, it’s not reversing. Elderly birds are dying faster than chicks are being born.

Whenever you read text, your brain processes the visual stimuli (刺激物) to create meaning and understand the content. Chances are, you don’t pay much attention to the way the information is presented- particularly the font (字体) choice. That’s because your main target is reading comprehension, not aesthetics.
Although typography(排印) is missed by most of us, it’s essential in making texts legible, readable and appealing for audiences. Beyond the visual aspect, research shows that fonts play a significant role in the mental processes of understanding that happen while we read. A font’s impact on the way you learn and memorize information might be hard to notice consciously, but your brain is certainly tuned in. Perhaps surprisingly, hard-to-read fonts such as Bodoni, Comic Sans, or Monotype Corsiva are better for memorizing information than fonts like Arial or Times New Roman, according to some studies.
“Difficulty can function as an alarm signal, giving the reader a sense that the task is challenging and will require mental effort,” says Daniel Oppenheimer, a professor of psychology at Carnegie Mellon University and one of a 2010 study authors, “Additionally, slowing down the reading speed to deal with the disfluency may increase the probability of spotting errors in a text.”
Font characteristics such as style, size and color play a role in information retention memory or recall as well, says Stephen Banham, a typography lecturer at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia. Experiments have proved a U-shape relationship between font size and memory: Large-font items may predict higher recall regardless of style, but very small font sizes can also introduce a desirable difficulty.
A document’s specific method of formatting information also makes an impact. Using font styles like bold or italics to indicate significance can also improve memory. That’s because people are better able to remember information they consider important, says Oppenheimer. Researchers found that bolded text has a higher recall than text in italic or regular styles, regardless of the font size. However, if an entire document is bolded, the emphasis is lost, and readers can no longer spot vital passages.
8.Why do readers often ignore the font choice
A.They lack aesthetic knowledge. B.They aim to understand the meaning.
C.Their brains are not sensitive to the font. D.Fonts are of little significance in reading.
9.What does Daniel Oppenheimer say about hard-to-read fonts
A.They can lead to desirable challenges. B.They may distract readers from the text.
C.The meaning of the text may be mistaken. D.They will affect reading performance negatively.
10.What can improve people’s information retention or recall
A.Using fonts of medium size. B.Choosing bright font colors.
C.Putting the words in italic type D.Making the whole passage bold.
11.Which of the following is the best title for the text
A.What Fonts Make Reading Easy B.What Fonts Make Memory Lasting
C.Why Fonts Impact Retention and Recall D.How Fonts Affect Learning and Memory
Taking a picture of Mars is not easy. Once light bounces off the planet, it can take between 3 to 22 minutes to travel to Earth - so there aren’t truly “live” images of Mars.
But on Friday afternoon, the European Space Agency will offer the closest thing: the first “livestream” of Mars a rare, almost real-time look into space on YouTube, which posts pictures of the planet every 50 seconds as they beam down directly from the camera mounted (安装) on the agency’s Mars Express orbiter (轨道飞行器). We can get a firsthand look at Mars on Friday.
“During Friday’s one-hour livestream, the time between the images being taken from orbit around Mars and appearing on your screen will be about 18 minutes,” James Godfrey, the spacecraft operations manager at the ESA’s mission control center, said in a statement. “That’s 17 minutes for light to travel from Mars to Earth in their current configuration, and about one minute to pass through the wires and servers on the ground. ”
“Normally, we see images from Mars and know that they were taken days before. I’m excited to see Mars as it is now - as close to a Martian(火星人) ‘now’ as we can possibly get!’
In 50-second intervals, the camera shoots across Mars, showing a side of the planet entering night, as well as some clouds billowing out on the comer. The livestream celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Mars Express mission which was launched in 2003 to better understand the planet, as well as search for traces of water.
It’s with this camera, originally meant for engineering purposes, that we’ll get ”live“ images on Friday evening from 18:00 CEST in the first MarsLIVE. What makes this unique, is that it’s a one-hour livestream from Mars but don’t expect a detailed view of the Red Planet!
12.What can we learn from this text
A.Watching the MarsLIVE, people will have a completely real-time view of the Mars.
B.The audience can watch the MarsLIVE thanks to the camera on the Mars
C.About 20 years ago, the ESA launched an orbiter to search for Martians.
D.The MarsLIVE is to celebrate the launch of the Mars Express mission in 2003.
13.What does the underlined word ”configuration“ in paragraph 3 mean
A.Equipment. B.Orbit. C.Planet. D.Spacecraft.
14.What is the text mainly about
A.The live images taken from orbit around Mars.
B.The 20th anniversary of the Mars Express mission.
C.The first ”livestream“ of Mars to be shown on YouTube.
D.A rare and almost real-time look into space on YouTube.
15.What does the last paragraph imply
A.The camera was originally used to shoot the Mars.
B.We can get truly live Mars images in the first MarsLIVE.
C.Detailed images about the Mars can’t be ensured.
D.The unique MarsLIVE will live up to viewers’ expectation.
It’s up to parents and coaches to help kids draw out life lessons from sports. Sometimes we think kids will simply absorb the lessons that are obvious to us as adults. 16 Here’s a parent’s guide to watching the Olympics with your kids.
17 If you see poor sportsmanship, you might ask, “What would you have done differently there ” On the more positive side, we often see Olympians thanking the officials after a competition. It can be a wonderful time to remind our kids to thank people who often go under-appreciated, such as food servers, bus drivers, and teachers.
We often see Olympians picking up their teammates and perhaps even an opponent after a loss or disappointing performance. Talk with your kids about times when their classmates, friends and/or teammates are down and what they can specifically do to pick them up. 18
Also keep a close eye on the medal ceremonies. 19 For example, if a sorely disappointed Silver medalist can overcome narrowly missing Gold and share sincere congratulations that is an opportunity to talk with kids about times they were disappointed with an outcome.
One last thing to keep in mind is the Olympic motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger.” But why is this not “Fastest, Highest, Strongest ” 20 This is a huge lesson for our kids. In life, our focus should be on giving our own best personal performance — comparing ourselves to ourselves, not just to those around us.
A.But that is not often the case.
B.Kids will learn a lot from the Olympics.
C.Keep your eye out for both positive and negative life lessons.
D.This might be in the middle of a performance or just after it’s over.
E.The reason is that the Olympic spirit calls on athletes to achieve excellence.
F.Use the sports you watch on the Olympics to encourage your child to get fit.
G.That’s when you’ll see the opportunity for life lessons in winning and losing gracefully.

I arrived in Lunenburg three weeks ago. It took a while to get 36 to the different way of life here. The main reason for coming here is to collect some of the 37 folk songs of Canada, but one of the other reasons why I come here 38 is that Lunenburg has been given a protected status in Canada. Be active in after-school activities
Hello, everyone! It is my great honor to be here. While academics are important, it is unnecessary to spend all of our time on it. Personally, I prefer playing football and reading novels during my after-school time, which not only benefits me physically but also mentally.
More importantly, participation in after-school activities is linked to higher academic performance. We will be able to work more efficiently and effectively in our studies. In addition, students who devote some of their time and energy to after-school activities will allow them to further develop their talents by diving deep into a topic of interest and be of benefit to their future life.
So after-school activities are a necessary part of our overall life experience.
