In 1879,Mark Twain wrote an idea he had for a story in his notebook: “A poor man was loaned a £1,000,000 note for 30 days and he got rich on it because nobody could change it.” In the following years,he thought of the idea occasionally, putting down the title as a reminder or outlining a related idea, but nothing came of it.
A decade later, financial problems at Charles L.Webster & Co.,the publishing firm founded and owned by Twain, had become serious. The company’s balance sheet was destroyed by ongoing investments(投资) in a hopeless typesetting machine and by disappointing sales. To keep the company afloat,he had to continue investing his own money in it.Things didn’t get better.
In the summer of 1891,worried by the dwindling income and rising debts(减少的收入和增加的债务),Mark Twain and his family left their large house, sold the horses, laid off their servants, and took off for Europe so that the internationally celebrated author could cash in on his name abroad. In addition to writing travel articles for McClure’s Magazine and the New York newspaper The Sun,Twain earned money by giving readings in various European cities.Eventually,he earned enough to pay back all the debts.
While having an expensive lifestyle in Europe, dining with important persons, and enjoying the widespread attention of the media,Samuel Clemens, the man behind the personality known as Mark Twain, was very poor; the future that awaited him included the closure of his publishing firm and personal bankruptcy(破产).As a virtually penniless man everyone assumed was rich,he doubtlessly realized the absurdity(荒唐) of his situation and the time must have seemed right to take that idea of a million-pound note and turn it into a story about the nature of wealth. He finished the story while in Florence during the fall of 1892 and sent it off to the editors of Century Magazine.

根据第一段中“In 1879,Mark Twain wrote...‘A poor man was loaned a £1,000,000 note for 30 days and he got rich on it because nobody could change it.’”

3.Why did Mark Twain travel to Europe
A.To experience a different lifestyle.
B.To escape from paying his debts.
C.To sell his new books.
D.To make money.

A.His desire for wealth.
B.The media attention he got.
C.The situation he found himself in.
D.His meetings with important persons.
根据最后一段中“As a virtually penniless ...about the nature of wealth.”
The film,Remember the Titans, tells an inspiring story of a sports team achieving the highest level of accomplishment against great challenges. The team’s coach Herman Boone pushes the players farther than they could have imagined. On the first day of practice,he says,“When you put that uniform on,you’d better come to work.We will be perfect in every aspect of the game.” Over the course of the season, the coach and the team come to understand they are not perfect, but by working together, they can be unbeatable.
Yet,when it comes specifically to the importance of the pursuit(追求) of perfection mentioned early in the movie, renowned sport psychologist Dr.Jerry Lynch has a different view:
“Having such an unachievable goal positions young athletes perfectly for failure.Yet,they keep measuring their self-worth as athletes and people by outcomes and results,by winning and losing, and by achievements and failures.Parents play a huge role in this problem because they believe, usually unconsciously(下意识地) or unintentionally, that they are better parents if their kids are perfect. As a result,I often find myself working with kids who are terribly disappointed in themselves or often angry about not measuring up.Over time, these pressures lead to parents unintentionally refusing to give their love over poor performances, which harms their family relationship.”
Lynch encourages parents to remind children that there are only two kinds of athletes: those who fail and those who will fail.Lynch notes,“Professional baseball hitters are considered great if they get a hit a third of the time.Professional basketball players are considered excellent if they make half of their shots from three-point range. If soccer players,on average, make one goal for every five shots they attempt, they are celebrated. Those who are the best always mean to do their best, they strive to be the best they can be,and this puts them in a position for good things to happen...but not perfect things.”
5.What does Herman Boone think is the most important
A.Having good opportunities.
B.Wearing united uniforms.
C.Perfect performance.
D.Teamwork.
根据第一段中的“but by working together,they can be unbeatable”可知,Herman Boone认为团队合作是最重要的。故选D。
6.What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss
A.The result of overfocusing on perfection.
B.The wrong standards set by athletes’ parents.
C.The relationship pressure for teenagers in families.
D.The common emotional problems faced by athletes.
答案 A
根据第三段中的“Parents play a huge role in this problem because they believe...that they are better parents if their kids are perfect.” 再根据本段中的“Over time, these pressures lead to parents unintentionally refusing to give their love over poor performances, which harms their family relationship.” 故选A。
7.What does Lynch want to show by giving examples in the last paragraph
A.Practice makes perfect.
B.Many athletes do not set high goals.
C.Great athletes also make mistakes.
D.Winning is difficult for many athletes.
8.What is the main purpose of the text
A.To present a film.
B.To teach an attitude to life.
C.To introduce a psychologist.
D.To give coaches suggestions.

The film,Remember the Titans, tells an inspiring story of a sports team achieving the highest level of accomplishment against great challenges. The team’s coach Herman Boone pushes the players farther than they could have imagined. On the first day of practice,he says,
“When you put that uniform on,you’d better come to work.We will be perfect in every aspect of the game.” Over the course of the season, the coach and the team come to understand they are not perfect, but by working together, they can be unbeatable.
