Famous Greek epics:Homer's epics
Homer's The lliad and The Odyssey were the two epics that brought the ideas of Greek civilization to the world and served as the foundation of Western literature. They have been translated into numerous modern languages and continue to be read widely.
Homer, the author, was a Greek epic poet.Ancient Greeks respected Homer and considered him the first and greatest of all epic poets. We don't know for sure when or where he lived (or if he existed at all for that matter). Herodotus told us that Homer lived around 400 years before his own time, which would place Homer's birth at around 850 BC.The importance of Homer to the ancient Greeks is described in Plato's Republic, which describes him as the “first teacher”and the “leader of our culture”.
The Hiad
The Iliad is an epic poem that narrates the happenings in and around the city of Ilion,a city within the state ofTroy during the Trojan War.The word Iliad is derived from the name of the city and its literal meaning is“something concerned with llion” .
Set near the end of the Trojan War,The Iliad centers on a quarrel between the invading Greek king
Agamemnon and his greatest asset in battle, the warrior Achilles. From this conflict,Homer weaves a tale of warring 英 语
nations, vengeful(复仇的)gods, and the terrible consequences of prideful rage.Even though The liad focuses only on the last year of the Trojan War,it is an exceptionally lengthy account of the warfare.
The Odyssey
The Odyssey is an epic poem describing Odysseus'ten-year-long journey from Troy to Ithaca after the end of the Trojan War.He is cursed by the god Poseidon to wander thedangerous earth for ten years before reaching his destination.TheOdyssey also explains the events leading to the start and conclusion of the war in much detail.
The Odyssey doesn't only recount(描述)Odysseus'dangerous adventures on his journey back home,it also
talks about the pains his family goes through in Ithaca in his absence.

Eloisa Pentecotisa was begging on the street of Yaoundé when a group of people came across her and suggested she go with them. The 28-year-old had no idea how long she had been sleeping rough in Cameroon's capital. With severe mental health problems,Pentecotisa was rejected by her family and left to wander the streets alone.
Eight months on from the intervention by the group,Pentecotisa is a resident at Le Village de L'amour —the Village of Love —where she receives free therapy and medication.Founded in 2021 and located in the grounds of Jamot hospital in Yaoundé,the care center is a joint project between the public health ministry and Yaoundé's city council.
“Our main goal here is to treat mentally ill people living homeless on the streets in Yaounde,”says Dr Justine Laure Menguene,a psychiatrist at Jamot hospital and the head of the village.“It is the first and only free care center dedicated to homeless patients in Cameroon.”
The group—from a pool of more than 100 volunteers, among them nurses, psychologists and doctors—regularly searches the streets of the city, with security provided by the council, looking for homeless people in need of help. When the group identifies someone needing help, they first try to track down the family to ask whether they will allow treatment at home.Patients whose families cannot be found or refuse to help them are taken to the village.
“The name of the village reflects its nature,”says Audrey Pokam,a psychologist.“Love is our first medicine here. When patients arrive,we treat them with love.We show them that they are important.”
Mental illness in Cameroon is often misunderstood, with witchcraft(巫术)blamed when someone lives with a mental health condition. There is little data on the scale of mental illness in the country, and according to the World Health Organization,in 2020 there were only 12 psychiatrists,300 psychologists and 150 mental health nurses in Cameroon,a country of 28 million people.
It took months of treatment before Pentecotisa's story began to emerge.“I lost my mum when I was so young. I grew up with my uncle, thinkingthat my dad had abandoned me,”she said.“When I finally methim,we spent little time together and he died, too.I went to live with my elder sister and she later kicked me out.I wanted to diebecause
no one loved me.”
Pentecotisa now has“a lot of dreams”.“I'd like to become a teacher, and have my own family,”she says.
24.What happened to Eloisa Pentecotisa at the beginning of this story
A.She was sent to a local hospital. B.She was picked upby a care center
C.She was offered a job opportunity. D.She was arrested for her illegal activity. 25.How does Yaoundé's city council support Le Village de Lamour
A.By offering protection. B.By giving medical assistance.
C.By helping train nurses. D.By looking for homeless people. 26.What do the statistics in paragraph 6 show
A.Mental illness of local people in Cameroon is very serious.

A student stands before a shopkeeper on a Chinese market street. The shopkeeper announces that he has many things to sell, from cakes to postcards. The student is pondering(思索)the selection.Like many people learning a new language,he must consider grammar, pronunciation and tenses before answering. When it comes to Mandarin (普通话),that is especially difficult.
This scene is not actually playing out in China, but at an American university where a classroom has been equipped with a learning game, enhanced by Al.
The project is the result of collaboration between IBM Research and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute(RPD).The class, called AI-assisted Immersive Chinese, aims to createthe kind of interactions a student could normally only get in a study-abroad program.
The class isbuilt like a video game.Students enter a classroom with a360-degree display to face a huge screen. They can bargain with digitized shopkeepers selling fruit or order Peking duck from a waiter at a restaurant. The conversational skills these avatars(虚拟化身)have make it possible for them to respond in realtime to the students, with a degree of unpredictability that makes it similar to communicating with real humans.Unlike the real world, where people may make embarrassing public mistakes in the service of learning a new language, here students can pause the scene after messing up a pronunciation and replay it again to fix mistakes as needed.
“We've enabled the class to be like a game,”said Hui Su,the project's lead researcher.“And like any game, there are multiple levels with growing difficulty. The students who signed up for this course are at varying levels of Mandarin proficiency. They can set the level of dialogue difficulty individually and progress at the best speed for them.”
The germof this idea appeared in2013,when some language teachers and some game development teachers at RPI wondered if they could band together to create a language learning game. But the language interaction capability of the technology available was limited. In 2016,after RPI had teamed up with IBM,they finally had all the tech they needed to create what they wanted. It was a perfect marriage of RPI's immersive technology and IBM's speech
recognition software.
The system could have taught any language, but Su chose Mandarin.“Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages to learn,”said Su.“It's a tonal language, with four different tones. Each character can have four different meanings when pronounced with different syllabic(音节的)emphasis.”
28.What is the student mentioned in paragraph 1 doing
A.He is travelling in China. B.He is programming a play.
C.He is considering his shopping selection. D.He is learning Mandarin in a certain scene.
29.What does AI-assisted Immersive Chinese offer
A.A new communication program in China B.Real-life Chinese interaction environment.
C.Guidance on playing a Chinese video game. D.A chance of improving social interaction skills. 30.What is stressed in Hui Su's words in paragraph 5
A.The feature of a good game.
B.The wide acceptance of this project.
C.That students are keen on Mandarin.
D.That students can find their own study pace in the project.
31.What does the underlined word“germ ”in paragraph6 mean
A.Popularity. B.Bacterium. C.Origin. D.Development

For most workaday purposes machine translation (MT)has got much better in the past five years or so.The biggest source of improvement has been the use of“deep learning”in training such systems, which are meant to copy the action of a brain's neurons(神经元).
And improvement in automated(自动化的)translation has also come about through an emergence of clever companies solving individual tasks. Some have created specialist dictionaries so that important terms can be translated accurately and consistently. An entire MT engine can now be trained only on data from a professional domain(such as law or medicine),improving accuracy further. This means many human translators spend most of their time checking and improving MT output, rather than doing most of the translating themselves.
Being a machine's editor may sound depressing. For some translators, indeed it is.However, this can be seen the other way round.A human repeatedly translating identical formulae is in principle little different from a machine trained to do the same.Allowing the machine to do the easy bits—the chunks that are translated the same way, over and over—frees the translator to apply specialized linguistic and subject-matter knowledge, solving more intellectually satisfyingproblems.
This is especially obvious in legal translation. For example, the proper translation of the Spanish word “dolo” into English is“willful misconduct”,but the software simply translates it as “malice(恶意)”.Since the law in question considerably increases penalties(处罚)when the misconduct is“willful”,the mistranslation can be potentially disastrous and couldonlyhave been caught by someone with the right combination of legal and linguistic expertise.
That technology has completely changed translation is nothing new. Many translators have been silently relying on computers for years. What is new er is the willingness of translation firms, and individual translators,to be out and proud about using MT.Part of the job becomes knowing what can be automated and what cannot.Invoices(发 票)and instruction books can be lefto MT,but a novel legal argument needs to be almost entirely translated by hand. This is impossible for someone who merely knows Spanish and English andtook a few translation classes. The bad news for some translators is that a tap of repeatable, casy work is being turned off.The good news is that what
remains will be brain-challenging stuff for people who have a knowledge of a language and something else.
32.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about translation companies
A.There is a fierce competition between them.
B.There are many problems for them to solve.
C.They are trying to improve machine translation.
D.They are replacing human translators with machine translation. 33.What does the author say about humans being a machine's editor
A.They might fail to realize their value. B.They will be amazed at the output of MT.
C.They can still have a sense ofsatisfaction. D.They might be looked down upon by others.
34.What is the big change in the translation field
A.The way translators use technologies. B.The appearance of more translation firms.
C.Translators'confidence in their own abilities. D.People's attitude towards machine translation. 35.What should human translators do according to the text
A.Increase their work efficiency. B.Master at least three languages.
C.Learn from machine translation. D.Gain some specialized knowledge.

AMemorable Labor Education Class Meeting
Last week, our class held a themed class meeting titled“Labor is Glorious”.During the meeting,we
shared personal stories of our labor experiences, which highlighted the value and satisfaction derived from hard work.Additionally,we had group discussions about how labor contributes to personal growth and community development. One of the most engaging parts of the meeting was a hands-on activity where we collectively cleaned our classroom.
Through this experience,I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of labor and the pride that
came with it.It taught me that even small acts of labor can have a significant impact.(122words)
