UNIT 2 WILDLIFE PROTECTION

The Monarch’s Journey
Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year. This annual① movement is called migration. They migrate② to find food,seek③ a partner,or in search of warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly.
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey.Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day.It uses its eyes to measure④ the position of the sun. These two pieces of information—the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky—allow the butterfly to determine⑤ the way to go.Eventually,it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter.
The solution to the mystery⑥ of the monarch’s amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble. Its population has crashed⑦ by as much as 90 per cent in the last few years.Sadly, human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is falling. In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plants that monarch caterpillars eat.
The research on the monarch’s behaviour has however led to a greater awareness of this creature.People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to feed on.If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive⑧ and keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come.

George Schaller is a biologist. He spends most of his life travelling in the wild to study unique wild animals, including the Bengal tiger, the East African lion, the Tibetan antelope, and the panda.
Schaller’s first experience abroad was said to be in Africa in 1959,to study the mountain gorilla (大猩猩) there. After that,he never stopped studying wild animals.Even when he was 82,he still continued his research:he went to South America to study wild species.
But Schaller said he had spent more time in China than in any other country and that he loved working in China. After his book The Giant Pandas of Wolong came out years ago,he left the study of the species to some Chinese scientists.Yet he returned to Changtang, Guangxi year after year to study other wild species there.
When Schaller studied wild animals,he also tried to call on people to protect these species.“Few lawmakers or members of the public read scientific papers or care about them,” he pointed out.So besides writing scientific papers and putting forward proposals to governments,he also tried to present his findings to the public by means of popular science books. The public also responded to the suffering of large and lovely wild animals.“That,in turn, provides protection for all the other species and the habitats in that area,” he said. And he’s glad to find the population of mountain gorillas has recovered and that China has created many national parks to protect animals like pandas.
“As far as I’m concerned, the value of my effort lies in leaving behind young biologists who have worked with me and I will continue training the young,” Schaller said.“I get cheered up all the time.I have seen the progress.”

In the summer months, fireflies (萤火虫) become lively, starting their “love stories”.Male fireflies fly around and a part of their belly (腹部) will light up.Then females sitting on the ground look up at the show and flash back to the males they like. They’re not going to mate (交配) unless they’ve exchanged these light signals (信号).
Firefly species have performed that for millions of years, lit only by the moon. Now humans are damaging their feelings, turning on street lights and LEDs at the fireflies’ summer party.
In the firefly world, it’s the females who are particularly turned off by man-made light.Owens, a researcher at Harvard University, led studies in experimental conditions and field conditions and found that male fireflies often keep flashing (闪光) under street lights and other kinds of overhead light, while female fireflies, active at night, basically shut down and stop reacting.
“Probably because they just can’t see the males very well,” Owens explained.“Typically male fireflies are looking down.Female fireflies are looking up at street lights and other light sources.”In lab conditions, not one of 20 pairs mated successfully under bright lights, while about half of firefly couples mated successfully in natural dim light.
In the last decade, the night sky became twice as bright due to the increasing use of LEDs, Owens said, which hurts the populations of fireflies.Sadly, no fireflies are protected under the Endangered Species Act presently.
“I like people to think about firefly extinction (灭绝) as sitting in a room of candles, and it’s beautiful,” said Sara Lewis, a professor of biology at Tufts University.“And if one or two of those candles went out, you probably don’t even notice it, but if that continues, eventually you are left sitting in complete darkness.”
5.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.Exchanging light signals of love. B.Telling their love stories.
C.Mating and raising babies. D.Holding summer parties.
根据第一段的“Then females sitting on the ground...exchanged these light signals(信号).”

6.What is a serious danger of man-made light to fireflies
A.It makes the female blind. B.It stops the female from reacting.
C.It causes them to get lost. D.It forces the male to shut off.
根据第三段的“In the firefly world, it’s the females who are particularly turned off...basically shut down and stop reacting.”

7.What influences the success of firefly mating according to the research
A.The size of male and female.
B.The male and female mating time.
C.The brightness of surrounding light.
D.The number of firefly couples.
根据第四段的“In lab conditions, not one of 20 pairs mated successfully...in natural dim light.”

8.What does Sara Lewis say about the firefly extinction
A.It will surely happen eventually.
B.It produces a beautiful story.
C.It will come if nothing is done.
D.It happens in a room of candles.
根据最后一段的“I like people to think about firefly extinction...eventually you are left sitting in complete darkness.”

About 35,000 African elephants are killed every year. That’s one dead elephant every 15 minutes! And if that continues, they’ll be extinct in less than a decade. There are a few societies working to prevent this, and now some of them are getting some help from Big Tech.
Three such groups have teamed up with Intel to stop poachers (盗猎者).They’re doing this by using AI-based cameras in national parks across the globe. The Trail Guard AI camera makes use of Intel’s Movidius Myriad 2 VPU processors.“By pairing AI technology with human decision-makers,we can solve some of our greatest challenges,” says Anna Bethke, head of AI for Social Good at Intel.“With Trail Guard AI,Intel’s Movidius technology enables the camera to take pictures of suspected poachers and warns park rangers (巡护员) in almost real time, who will then decide the most appropriate response.”
Intel claims its system can show the exact position of people and cars among the wildlife with a high degree of accuracy. The first generation of the system involved cameras that were triggered (触发) by movement tracking which would then send photos to the rangers on duty.Inauspiciously, that just sent them a lot of photos they had to review when anything moved in a camera’s field of view. However,by adding AI on top of it,the cameras can act as a first-line check and work much better without wasting time.
The system is also designed to run at low power, allowing it to function in the wild for up to a year and a half on a single charge.“Edge computing technology has the power to revolutionize the way we understand and protect our wildlife,” said Dr.Fabien Laurier, vice president of National Geographic Labs.“It is really helpful for us to accelerate conservation and work toward our dream of achieving a planet in balance.”
9.What is mainly described in Paragraph 2
A.Why AI-based cameras are popular.
B.Why Intel works to prevent poachers.
C.How park rangers respond to poachers.
D.How Trail Guard AI helps stop poachers.

10.What does the underlined word “Inauspiciously” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Impossibly. B.Unfortunately.
C.Immediately. D.Unambiguously.
根据画线词上文“The first generation...the rangers on duty.”以及后文“that just sent them...a camera’s field of view”可知,摄像头会拍摄太多照片,给工作人员带来太多工作,这是不幸的。

11.What does Dr.Fabien Laurier probably think of AI-based cameras
A.He has high hopes for them.
B.He is worried about them.
C.He has doubts about them.
D.He is dissatisfied with them.
根据最后一段“Edge computing technology...achieving a planet in balance.”

12.From which website is the text probably taken
A.www.. B.www..
C.www.earthharmonyhabitats.org. D.www..
根据第一段“About 35,000 African elephants...help from Big Tech.”

Many people are eager to take a trip to Africa to observe wild animals there.__1__However,your experiences won’t go smoothly if you make mistakes. Here are some of the biggest mistakes visitors often make when they head into the wild in Africa.
They fail to do proper research. Not all parks are created equal. You should understand exactly what you’re booking. It’s important to do your homework on the quality of service provided by the park and the guiding team.__2__ Otherwise, you may end up regretting it.“The general rule is that you get what you pay for,” one expert suggests.
__3__While the impression is that the trip usually takes place in warm climates, the temperatures do drop from day to night,so layers (层) are key.Besides, the right colors can help you blend into (融入) the surroundings so that you don’t attract wild animals’ attention. For example,if your trip includes a bush walk,it’s important to avoid black and white.
They refuse to listen to the guides. The biggest mistake that people can make is assuming they know everything instead of listening to their professional guides. These guides have undergone necessary training that enables them to be experts in all situations that can come up in the wild.Their job is to keep visitors safe and offer them an amazing experience.__4___
They expect to see animals at every turn.Keep in mind that this is the home of wild animals—not a theme park attraction. The animals’ jobs are far from trying to entertain guests. They won’t come out to welcome you.__5__Most of the adventures of viewing wildlife will take place in the early morning and late afternoon when you can watch the animals at their most active.
A.They pack the wrong clothes.
B.They should consider weather conditions.
C.And remember to learn about your park’s standard.
D.Such journey can be extremely wonderful and exciting.
E.So you need to wait patiently to enjoy a breathtaking view.
F.All the visitors need do is sit back and follow the guides’ directions.
G.Some even try to make noises to get the attention of animals for a photo.
1.D [上文“Many people are eager to take a trip to Africa to observe wild animals there.”说明很多人想去非洲旅行看野生动物;下文“However, your experiences won’t go smoothly if you make mistakes.”说明如果犯了错误就不会顺利,D选项“Such journey can be extremely wonderful and exciting.”
2.C [根据本段标题“They fail to do proper research.”以及“You should understand...and the guiding team.”
3.A [下文“While the impression is...night,so layers (层) are key.”
4.F [上文“Their job is to keep visitors safe and offer them an amazing experience.”说明导游的工作是确保游客的安全并提供一次惊人的体验;F选项“All the visitors need do is sit back and follow the guides’ directions.”
5.E [上文“They won’t come out to welcome you.” E选项“So you need to wait patiently to enjoy a breathtaking view.”

Many people are eager to take a trip to Africa to observe wild animals there. 1 However, your experiences won’t go smoothly if you make mistakes. Here are some of the biggest mistakes visitors often make when they head into the wild in Africa.
They fail to do proper research. Not all parks are created equal. You should understand exactly what you’re booking. It’s important to do your homework on the quality of service provided by the park and the guiding team. 2 Otherwise, you may end up regretting it.“The general rule is that you get what you pay for,” one expert suggests.
3 While the impression is that the trip usually takes place in warm climates, the temperatures do drop from day to night,so layers (层) are key.Besides, the right colors can help you blend into (融入) the surroundings so that you don’t attract wild animals’ attention. For example,if your trip includes a bush walk,it’s important to avoid black and white.
They refuse to listen to the guides. The biggest mistake that people can make is assuming they know everything instead of listening to their professional guides. These guides have undergone necessary training that enables them to be experts in all situations that can come up in the wild.Their job is to keep visitors safe and offer them an amazing experience. 4
They expect to see animals at every turn.Keep in mind that this is the home of wild animals—not a theme park attraction. The animals’ jobs are far from trying to entertain guests. They won’t come out to welcome you. 5 Most of the adventures of viewing wildlife will take place in the early morning and late afternoon when you can watch the animals at their most active.
