Life can feel overwhelming when we’re busy, but it can also be incredibly rewarding when we prioritize① our health. For me,the journey to a healthier lifestyle began a few years ago.One day,I looked in the mirror and realized I needed to make a change.I started with small steps, like taking daily walks and gradually incorporating exercise into my routine.
I remember the first time I joined a local yoga class.I was nervous, but the instructor welcomed me warmly. As I moved through the poses,I felt a sense of peace and strength I hadn’t experienced in a long time. That hour on the mat became my sanctuary②,a place where I could escape the stresses of daily life.
A few months later,I decided to participate in a community③ 5K run.The excitement was palpable as I stood at the starting line, surrounded by fellow runners.Crossing that finish line was exhilarating;I felt a sense of accomplishment④ that motivated me to keep pushing my limits.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about physical fitness;it’s also about mental well-being.I’ve learned to appreciate the importance of balance⑤,whether it’s enjoying a nutritious⑥ meal or allowing myself a treat now and then.

A beginner’s guide to exercise
You want to start doing exercise① Congratulations! You have just taken your first step towards a new and improved you②!
Understanding the benefits of exercise
Most people assume that regular exercise does wonders③ for the body and mind—but what exactly are its health benefits To start with④,physical activity increases the efficiency of your heart and
lungs⑤.During exercise, your heart and lungs must work harder. This extra effort makes them grow stronger over the long term⑥.It has also been proven that active people tend to have better immune systems and are at lower risk of diseases⑦.[1] Moreover, exercise is good for your mental health.Working out can help you reduce stress and get over negative feelings⑧.Some studies even show that exercise improves certain brain functions⑨,meaning you could actually exercise your way to better performance at school![2]
[1] It has been proven that...为固定句型,It为形式主语,that active people tend to...
[2]句中meaning you could actually exercise...
Planning your exercise routine
When you plan an exercise routine, the first thing to consider⑩ is what you expect to improve:heart and lung efficiency, muscle strength or flexibility.[3] Aerobic activities, like jogging, swimming and skiing, develop your heart and lungs.Strength training, such as pull-ups and weightlifting, increases muscle strength and encourages bone development .Flexibility training, including gymnastics and tai chi,
helps stretch your muscles and improve your body’s range of movement. These types of exercise all play a role in a healthy routine. Above all ,choose activities you enjoy because,in this way, you’re more likely to stick with them.
Eating and drinking right
Like cars that run on petrol, your body burns carbohydrates for energy.[4] Foods like noodles, rice, fruit and vegetables give your body plenty of carbohydrates to keep up your energy during a long workout. To help your muscles recover and repair themselves after exercise, you need to eat foods rich in protein ,such as fish, eggs and milk products. When to eat is also of great importance .In general ,
you should have your meal an average of 1.5 to 2.5 hours before exercising.Do not eat immediately after exercise;instead, wait at least 30 minutes after a typical routine,or as much as an hour after a hard workout.Remember to drink throughout exercise to make up for water lost to sweat .
[4]Like cars that run on petrol
Avoiding injury
To prevent soft tissue injury ,make sure that you wear proper clothes and equipment when exercising. You should also start small and slowly work your way to a longer and harder exercise routine to avoid getting hurt. Finally, remember to warm up before exercising and stretch at the end of your workout.
So,now you know the benefits of exercise and how to do it safely and effectively. What are you waiting for
①do exercise 锻炼
②a new and improved you 一个全新的、更好的你
④to start with 首先,第一
⑤increase the efficiency of your heart and lungs增强心肺功能
⑥over the long term长期;从长远来看
⑦at lower risk of diseases患病的风险较低

keep up your energy保持精力
be also of great importance也很重要
an average of 平均
make up for water lost to sweat弥补出汗失去的水分

Everyone has their own way to “recharge” their sense of well-being—something that makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and spiritually even if they aren’t consciously aware of it.Personally,I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups.A hike through the woods is ideal when I can make it happen. But that’s me.It’s not simply that I enjoy these activities but also that they make me feel better and clear my mind.
Mental health and physical health are closely connected. No kidding—what’s good for the body is often good for the mind. Knowing that what you can do physically has this effect for you will change your day and your life.
Physical activity has many mental health benefits. These have been published in the journal Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans and include improved brain health and cognitive function—the ability to think,if you will,a reduced risk of tension and worry, improved sleep and overall quality of life.Although not a cure for all, increasing physical activity directly contributes to improved mental health and better overall health and well-being.
Learning how to manage stress and getting screened for depression are simply good prevention practices in daily life. Awareness is especially important at this time of year, when disruptions to healthy habits and choices can be more likely and more annoying.
Shorter days and colder temperatures have a way of breaking up the normal life—as do the holidays, with both their joys and their stresses. When the rich sunshine and clear skies of temperate (温和的) months give way to terrible weather, less daylight, and festive gatherings,it may happen unconsciously or seem natural to be less physically active. However, that tendency is just why it’s so important that we are ever more mindful of our physical and emotional health and how we can maintain both at this time of year.
1.What is the author’s regular way of “recharging” his well-being
A.Working out in a gym.
B.Staying and doing nothing.
C.Hiking in the woods.
D.Slight exercise.
根据第一段的句子“Everyone has their own way...doing some push-ups.”

2.What can we learn from paragraph 3
A.The importance of good sleep.
B.The ways to improve brain health.
C.The mental health benefits of physical activity.
D.The bond between mental health and physical health.
根据第三段的内容“Physical activity...overall health and well-being.”

3.What does the underlined word “disruption” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Achievement. B.Destruction.
C.Advantage. D.Development.

4.Why does the author mention shorter days, colder temperatures and festivals
A.To persuade us to enjoy our current lives.
B.To show useful advice on keeping healthy.
C.To describe unexpected things in our lives.
D.To remind us to care about well-being anytime.

根据最后一段“Shorter days and colder temperatures...at this time of year.”
B
You joined the soccer team, and played every game of the season. Sure, you’re not the best player on the team, but most days you gave it your all as well as your teammates.Did you deserve a trophy(奖杯)
If the decision is up to Carol Dweck, the answer would likely be no.She’s a psychology professor at Stanford University. She says a child doesn’t have to be the best to get a trophy. But those who receive an award should have to work for it.She suggests trophies go to the most improved child,or the one who contributes most to the team spirit,as well as to those who play the best.
“The trophy has to stand for something,” Dweck says.“If we give a trophy to everyone, then the award has no value.” Dweck argues that giving kids trophies for particular reasons, such as improvement in a sport, teaches kids that adults value working hard and trying their best.
Others say that there’s no harm in giving awards to all kids who play a sport, regardless of how they play or whether or not they improve.“I think we should encourage kids in participation in sports,” says Kenneth Barish,a psychology professor at Weill Cornell Medical College.“A trophy is one way to encourage kids’ efforts.”
Barish argues that when we single out only the best or the most improved players for a trophy,we are teaching kids a wrong lesson—we are sending the message that winning is everything.Barish says, “Playing sports also teaches kids about teamwork and the importance of exercise.”
“There will be plenty of opportunities for kids to learn about the competition as they get older,” says Barish.“They’ll soon realize that only one soccer team wins the World Cup and only one football team wins the Super Bowl in a season.” For now,he thinks there’s nothing wrong with letting all kids who play a sport feel like winners. That means trophies are for everyone.
5.According to Carol Dweck, which player should receive a trophy
A.Tony, the most attractive player of the soccer team.
B.David,a soccer player who is both clever and humorous.
C.Peter, who is ready to help his partners to score goals.
D.Jim,a soccer player who tries his best to win the game on his own.
根据第二段中的“She suggests trophies...who play the best.”

6.Which of the following statements would Kenneth Barish agree with
A.There is no sense in giving a trophy to everyone.
B.Kids fond of playing sports should be rewarded.
C.Kids should be given trophies for learning from sports.
D.It is necessary to encourage kids to participate in sports.
根据第四段中的“I think we should encourage kids in participation in sports”可知,Kenneth Barish认为我们应该鼓励孩子参加体育活动。

7.The underlined phrase “single out” in Paragraph 5 probably means “ ”.
A.respect B.choose C.value D.stress

8.What is the best title of the passage
A.What does a trophy cost
B.All kids deserve a trophy
C.Who deserves a trophy
D.The best player deserves a trophy

Are you preparing for a big test If so,you may want to play some basketball in between hitting the books.Doctors are starting to find more and more information that suggests a connection between exercise and brain development.Judy Cameron,a scientist at Oregon Health and Science University, studies brain development.According to her research,it seems that exercise can make blood vessels (血管),including those in the brain, stronger and more fully developed.Dr Cameron claims this allows people who exercise to concentrate better. She says,“While we already know that exercise is good for the heart, exercise can really cause physical changes in the brain.”
The effects of exercise on brain development can even be seen in babies.Babies who do activities that require a lot of movement and physical activity show greater brain development than babies who are less physically active. With babies, even a little movement can show big results.
Older people can beef up their brain as well.Scientists from 11 universities studied a group of seniors aged from 70 to 79.Their study showed a short-term memory increase of up to 40 percent after exercising just three hours a week. The exercise does not have to be very difficult, but it does have to increase the heart rate. Also, just like the motion for babies, exercise for seniors should involve some complexity (复杂).Learning some new skills or motions, such as with yoga or tai chi, helps open up memory paths in the brain that may not have been used for a long time.
For most people, any type of physical activity that increases the heart rate is helpful. The main goal is to increase the brain’s flow of blood. And your brain can benefit from as little as three hours of exercise a week.
9.What do we know from paragraph 1
A.The brain needs special mental exercise.
B.The more exercise, the bigger the brain.
C.Exercise helps the brain develop better.
D.Exercise makes us stronger and happier.
根据第一段中的“Doctors are starting...and brain development.”

10.What does the underlined “beef up” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Organise. B.Improve.
C.Relax. D.Rescue.

根据第二段中的“The effects of exercise...less physically active.” 可知,此处讲述的应是运动对老人的大脑也有影响,结合下文中的“Scientists from...three hours a week.”
11.How can 3 hours of proper exercise a week help
A.Lengthen the age from 70 to 79.
B.Increase the heart rate of babies.
C.Benefit seniors’ short-term memory.
D.Open up memory paths for students.
根据倒数第二段中的“Scientists from 11...three hours a week.”

12.What is the purpose of the text
A.To offer advice on how to do exercise.
B.To introduce ways to change the brain.
C.To provide ways to increase memory.
D.To encourage people to exercise for the brain health.
根据尾段中的“For most people...as three hours of exercise a week.”

Smartwatches and fitness trackers (健身追踪器) have gained popularity recently. These tools can record your daily steps, heart rates, etc. 1 If yes,it might be a sign that you’re addicted to your fitness tracker.
2 If you keep setting unrealistic daily goals that involve working out for too long, and if you begin to ignore friends and responsibilities to make time for your workout, then you’re most probably addicted to your fitness tracker.
It’s a struggle to overcome the addiction to fitness trackers. 3 For example, the number in your smart watch showing how far you’ve come can give you a sense of achievement.
Of course, failing to meet your daily goal can be discouraging. You might focus on your shortcomings rather than your progress.Another problem is that you might find yourself paying too much attention to the step number rather than how your body feels. 4
Therefore,if you’re spending too much time looking at your smartwatch, limit your daily step count to a comfortable level. 5 For example, concentrating on your hobbies or socializing with friends can be a great way to keep your mind on other things.
A.Don’t overuse your smartwatch.
B.It doesn’t convey what you’re really feeling.
C.After all, reaching a daily step count can be so appealing.
D.How can you tell whether you’re addicted to your fitness tracker
E.Actually, this addiction to step count can be risky, mentally and physically.
F.However,do you find yourself checking your steps and heart rates too often
G.Besides, you can find other things to do that don’t involve checking your fitness tracker.
1.F [根据空后的“If yes,it might be a sign that you’re addicted to your fitness tracker.” F“However,do you find yourself checking your steps and heart rates too often ”与下文内容一致,同时为一般疑问句,与下文“yes”形成一致,故选F项。]
2.D [根据下文内容“If you keep setting...your fitness tracker.” D“How can you tell whether you’re addicted to your fitness tracker ”与下文内容一致,为本段主要内容,故选D项。]
3.C [根据下文内容“For example,the number...of achievement.” C “After all,reaching a daily step count can be so appealing.” 由此得出段首句内容“It’s a struggle to overcome the addiction to fitness trackers.”,故选C项。]
4.E [根据上文“You might focus...your body feels.” E “Actually,this addiction to step count can be risky,mentally and physically.”
5.G [根据下文“For example,concentrating on...on other things.” G “Besides,you can find other things to do that don’t involve checking your fitness tracker.” UNIT 2 Be sporty,be healthy

1.Most people assume that regular exercise does wonders for the body and mind—but what exactly are its health benefits
2.Some studies even show that exercise improves certain brain functions, meaning you could actually exercise your way to better performance at school!
that引导宾语从句;meaning在此处的意思是“意味着”,对前面一句话做出解释;you could actually exercise...at school是省略了that的宾语从句。
3.When you plan an exercise routine, the first thing to consider is what you expect to improve:heart and lung efficiency, muscle strength or flexibility.
when引导时间状语从句;to consider为动词不定式作后置定语,修饰the first thing;what引导表语从句。
4.To prevent soft tissue injury, make sure that you wear proper clothes and equipment when exercising.

A beginner’s guide to exercise
You want to start doing exercise① Congratulations! You have just taken your first step towards a new and improved you②!
Understanding the benefits of exercise
Most people assume that regular exercise does wonders③ for the body and mind—but what exactly are its health benefits To start with④,physical activity increases the efficiency of your heart and lungs⑤.During exercise, your heart and lungs must work harder.
When you plan an exercise routine, the first thing to consider⑩ is what you expect to improve:heart and lung efficiency, muscle strength or flexibility.[3] Aerobic activities, like jogging, swimming and skiing, develop your heart and lungs.Strength training, such as pull-ups and weightlifting, increases muscle strength and encourages bone development.Flexibility training, including gymnastics and tai chi, helps stretch your muscles and improve your body’s range of movement. These types of exercise all play a role in a healthy routine.Above all, choose activities you enjoy because,in this way, you’re more likely to stick with them.
Eating and drinking right
Like cars that run on petrol, your body burns carbohydrates for energy.[4] Foods like noodles, rice, fruit and vegetables give your body plenty of carbohydrates to keep up your energy during a long workout. To help your muscles recover and repair themselves after exercise, you need to eat foods rich in protein, such as fish, eggs and milk products. When to eat is also of great importance. In general, you should have your meal an average of 1.5 to 2.5 hours before exercising.Do not eat immediately after exercise;instead, wait at least 30 minutes after a typical routine,or as much as an hour after a hard workout.Remember to drink throughout exercise to make up for water lost to sweat.
[4]Like cars that run on petrol
Avoiding injury
To prevent soft tissue injury, make sure that you wear proper clothes and equipment when exercising.

Everyone has their own way to “recharge” their sense of well-being—something that makes them feel good physically, emotionally, and spiritually even if they aren’t consciously aware of it.Personally,I know that few things can improve my day as quickly as a walk around the block or even just getting up from my desk and doing some push-ups.A hike through the woods is ideal when I can make it happen. But that’s me.It’s not simply that I enjoy these activities but also that they make me feel better and clear my mind.
Mental health and physical health are closely connected. No kidding—what’s good for the body is often good for the mind.Knowing that what you can do physically has this effect for you will change your day and your life.
Learning how to manage stress and getting screened for depression are simply good prevention practices in daily life.Awareness is especially important at this time of year, when disruptions to healthy habits and choices can be more likely and more annoying.

You joined the soccer team, and played every game of the season.Sure, you’re not the best player on the team, but most days you gave it your all as well as your teammates.Did you deserve a trophy(奖杯)
Barish argues that when we single out only the best or the most improved players for a trophy,we are teaching kids a wrong lesson—we are sending the message that winning is everything.Barish says,“Playing sports also teaches kids about teamwork and the importance of exercise.”
根据第四段中的“I think we should encourage kids in participation in sports”可知,Kenneth Barish认为我们应该鼓励孩子参加体育活动。]
7.The underlined phrase “single out” in Paragraph 5 probably means “ ”.
A.respect B.choose
C.value D.stress
