Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Five seconds are left on the clock. The ball is passed from one player to another. The athletes move quickly past opponents (对手). In the final second, a player scores the winning goal. What sets this match apart? The players are in wheelchairs.
Wheelchair rugby is played in more than 25 countries around the world, with men and women competing equally. It is also a sport in the Summer Paralympics, the world’s second-largest sporting event after the Olympics.
The sport’s rules and equipment are different from traditional rugby, which has 15 players on an outdoor field and kicking methods that are similar to football in the United States. Wheelchair rugby is played indoors on a small hardwood court. Only four players from each 10-member team are on the court at the same time. In wheelchair rugby, the ball is smaller than a traditional rugby ball and round instead of oval (椭圆形). This makes it easier to carry on one’s knee. It’s also easier to catch, which is important because some players struggle with hand movements.
In wheelchair rugby, the aim is to carry the ball across the goal line. Instead of kicking other players along the way, the athletes crash with each other in order to kick the ball out.
In New Zealand, the All Blacks, the traditional rugby team, are widely known. But not everyone knows about the Wheel Blacks, who travel across the country and internationally to compete.
Members of this great team won the gold medal in the 2004 Paralympic Games and the third medal in the 2019 Asia Oceania Championships.
The team captain encourages everyone to find a sport they love, no matter what limitations they may have. “In any sport that you’re wanting to try,” he said, “just go for it. Don’t be afraid to push the limit.”

Tai chi, a centuries-old Chinese martial art and an internationally popular form of exercise, has been added to the cultural heritage list of the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization).
As its initial (最初的) application was turned down in 2008, for more than 10 years, China has been trying to have tai chi — also known as taijiquan — recognised officially by the UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At the time, judges told China it had applied for too many listings for tai chi to be considered for a place.China was told to reduce its applications for listings, which included tai chi, Shaolin kung fu, Peking Opera and acupuncture.
According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, doing tai chi can reduce stress, anxiety and depression, improve energy and stamina (耐力), strengthen the immune system (免疫系统) and reduce joint pain.“It is not just a sport to make people fit, but also contains Chinese culture and philosophy,” researcher Yan Shuangjun also told Xinhua News Agency. The application started in 2008 and now we made a victory, which will help this sport to reach more places.
Tai chi has a massive, devoted global following.Millions of elderly Chinese people practise it every day in city parks. Each year, tens of thousands of people from other countries come to China to learn it.Gisele Bundchen, one of the highest-paid models in the world, makes tai chi into her daily life.Others who have been attracted by its use in their lives include actors Terence Stamp and Adrian Paul, Bollywood star Kunal Kapoor, and musician RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan — to say nothing of its importance to martial artists such as Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Jet Li.

Fifty per cent of the Kenyan top runners are members of Kalenjin, one minority race of the country. They make up less than two per cent of Kenya’s population. This fact has puzzled sports scientists. They have spent considerable time and effort trying to answer one question: what enables the Kalenjin people to run so fast?
A team of Danish scientists spent 18 months and discovered the Kalenjins had remarkably slow heart rates even when running long distances. The Kalenjins live in high-elevation (高海拔) villages in western Kenya. People living there produce more red blood cells, which support the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Scientists believe there is a connection between increased red blood cells and low heart rates and that both may enable high-altitude athletes to outperform those who train at low elevation. The Danish scientists also studied the bodies of the Kalenjins and compared them to those of the Danes. They found that the Kalenjins have lower body mass indexes (a measure of body fat based on weight and height) and longer “birdlike” legs than Danish people.
As a result of the Danish study, some scientists made the conclusion that the Kalenjins possess what is called a “speed gene”. However, Kenyan runners were offended by this conclusion. They owed their success to hard work and endless hours of training.
Although the controversy (争议) over the “speed gene” remains unsolved, British runner Mo Farah’s experience offers an interesting perspective on the subject. In 2005, he realized he wasn’t meeting his potential as a runner. A group of Kenyan runners were training in England then. After he observed the Kenyans’ strict training routines and dedication to their sports, Farah began eating healthy foods and training harder than he had ever trained in his life. As a result, Farah’s running career exploded. He has won seven world and Olympic titles in the 5,000m and regularly beats Kenya’s top runners.
Farah’s story proves what Kenyans have known all along. Their “secret” is simple. Train hard, run fast and never give up.
9.What interested the sports scientists?( )
A.The Kenyan sports history.
B.The Kalenjins’ running ability.
C.The Kalenjins’ training methods.
D.The Kenyans’ enthusiasm for sports.
10.According to Danish scientists, what leads to Kalenjins’ success?( )
A.Physical condition. B.Living style.
C.Hard training. D.Strong will.
11.What do we know about the Danish research result?( )
A.Danish people believe that it is the truth.
B.Mo Farah finds the result astonishing.
C.Kenyan runners think it is unacceptable.
D.The world has attached great importance to it.
12.Why is Mo Farah’s story mentioned in the text?( )
A.To show running methods count.
B.To encourage British athletes.
C.To prove effort pays off.
D.To support the gene theory.

A
Five seconds are left on the clock. The ball is passed from one player
to another. The athletes move quickly past opponents (对手). In the
final second, a player scores the winning goal. What sets this match
apart? The players are in wheelchairs.
Wheelchair rugby is played in more than 25 countries around the
world, with men and women competing equally. It is also a sport in the
Summer Paralympics, the world’s second-largest sporting event after
the Olympics.
The sport’s rules and equipment are different from traditional
rugby, which has 15 players on an outdoor field and kicking methods that
are similar to football in the United States. Wheelchair rugby is played
indoors on a small hardwood court. Only four players from each 10-
member team are on the court at the same time. In wheelchair rugby, the
ball is smaller than a traditional rugby ball and round instead of oval (椭
圆形). This makes it easier to carry on one’s knee. It’s also easier to
catch, which is important because some players struggle with hand
movements.
In wheelchair rugby, the aim is to carry the ball across the goal line.
Instead of kicking other players along the way, the athletes crash with
each other in order to kick the ball out.
In New Zealand, the All Blacks, the traditional rugby team, are
widely known. But not everyone knows about the Wheel Blacks, who
travel across the country and internationally to compete.
Members of this great team won the gold medal in the 2004
Paralympic Games and the third medal in the 2019 Asia Oceania
Championships.
The team captain encourages everyone to find a sport they love, no
matter what limitations they may have. “In any sport that you’re
wanting to try,” he said, “just go for it. Don’t be afraid to push the
limit.”

As its initial (最初的) application was turned down in 2008, for
more than 10 years, China has been trying to have tai chi — also known
as taijiquan — recognised officially by the UNESCO on the
Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. At the
time, judges told China it had applied for too many listings for tai chi to
be considered for a place.China was told to reduce its applications for
listings, which included tai chi, Shaolin kung fu, Peking Opera and
acupuncture.
According to the Mayo Clinic in the United States, doing tai chi can
reduce stress, anxiety and depression, improve energy and stamina
(耐力), strengthen the immune system (免疫系统) and reduce
joint pain.“It is not just a sport to make people fit, but also contains
Chinese culture and philosophy,” researcher Yan Shuangjun also told
Xinhua News Agency. The application started in 2008 and now we made a
victory, which will help this sport to reach more places.
Tai chi has a massive, devoted global following.Millions of elderly
Chinese people practise it every day in city parks. Each year, tens of
thousands of people from other countries come to China to learn it.Gisele
Bundchen, one of the highest-paid models in the world, makes tai chi
into her daily life.Others who have been attracted by its use in their lives
include actors Terence Stamp and Adrian Paul, Bollywood star Kunal
Kapoor, and musician RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan — to say nothing of its
importance to martial artists such as Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and Jet Li.

Fifty per cent of the Kenyan top runners are members of Kalenjin,
one minority race of the country. They make up less than two per cent of
Kenya’s population. This fact has puzzled sports scientists. They have
spent considerable time and effort trying to answer one question: what
enables the Kalenjin people to run so fast?
A team of Danish scientists spent 18 months and discovered the
Kalenjins had remarkably slow heart rates even when running long
distances. The Kalenjins live in high-elevation (高海拔) villages in
western Kenya. People living there produce more red blood cells, which
support the transport of oxygen throughout the body. Scientists believe
there is a connection between increased red blood cells and low heart rates
and that both may enable high-altitude athletes to outperform those who
train at low elevation. The Danish scientists also studied the bodies of the
Kalenjins and compared them to those of the Danes.
They found that the Kalenjins have lower body mass indexes (a measure
of body fat based on weight and height) and longer “birdlike” legs than
Danish people.
As a result of the Danish study, some scientists made the conclusion
that the Kalenjins possess what is called a “speed gene”. However,
Kenyan runners were offended by this conclusion. They owed their
success to hard work and endless hours of training.
Although the controversy (争议) over the “speed gene” remains
unsolved, British runner Mo Farah’s experience offers an interesting
perspective on the subject. In 2005, he realized he wasn’t meeting his
potential as a runner. A group of Kenyan runners were training in England
then. After he observed the Kenyans’ strict training routines and
dedication to their sports, Farah began eating healthy foods and training
harder than he had ever trained in his life. As a result, Farah’s running
career exploded. He has won seven world and Olympic titles in the 5,
000m and regularly beats Kenya’s top runners.
Farah’s story proves what Kenyans have known all along. Their
“secret” is simple. Train hard, run fast and never give up.

chemicals, including serotonin and endorphins.

fresh air and physical activity can help you relax and sleep well at
night.17.( ). It is also called your “internal clock” which makes
you feel sleepy enough at night and awake enough in the morning.
Exercising in cold weather isn’t for everyone, though. If you have
any health problems, it is advisable to talk with your healthcare provider
first.
