Feeling good and having humour in our lives can do wonders for our position and productivity, which means that there is definitely a place for some humour on the job.Having a smiling face will help your co-workers and supervisors feel better around you, and you may well end up harvesting rewards by laughing more in the workplace. But you need to know how to apply humour to your work environment.
One of the main rules with humour in the workplace is to avoid argument when you are joking on the job.Stay well away from joking about political affairs, race and religion.Never make fun of other people within your organization, as you are trying to win friends with the people you work with, and not set against them.If you can’t help yourself, please be extremely careful.
Making jokes about the ups and downs of your trade is a safe way to the place of work. You will have the benefit of knowing exactly what your co-workers have to face each day, and it’s much better as it helps to let go of tensions and lower stress levels by getting them to chuckle (低声地笑) about the situations they come across frequently.
The very best time for some humour is when you are not working, but still in the region of the people you work with, such as a coffee or lunch break. You can also make an effort to be funny on the job, but when you are working, it’s a good idea to use jokes much more thinly than you would normally do.
In general, humour in the workplace is a superb area to flex your creative muscles and be a great help to your job.
28.Which of the following best describes the function of humour in the workplace?
A.Special. B.Convincing.
C.Rewarding. D.Ordinary.
29.What topic is safe to joke about at work?
A.Politics. B.Work.
C.Race. D.Religion.
30.What does the underlined word “thinly” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Humorously. B.Secretly.
C.Directly. D.Infrequently.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.Views on Making Friends at Work B.Ways of Making Humour at Work
C.Benefits of Being Humorous at Work D.Attitudes towards Making Humour at Work
D
A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humour.Humour has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who disliked humour, and thought laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others. He thought humour to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, PhD of Education, insists that humour allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.I agree with Gordon.Learning to look at the world through humour is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs.Without humour as a way to express their feelings, how would Americans be willing to support the election?Television shows like The Daily Show have become important parts of American culture. They are affecting the masses by unconsciously inputting politics into their minds. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humour.Social humour helps people through the twists and turns of the human condition.American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image.On the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out.He has a joke about the popular musical group The Pussycat Dolls, describing their hit song Don’t Cha as a negative representation of women. He points out the obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University Maryland has shown that humour is one determining factor in selecting a partner.Among other things, people look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humour is not always used for good purposes.Humour can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗) and racism, but, like everything else, it has the potential to unite human beings by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connections with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles (皱纹) to know that there is comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn’t aware of.With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity.
32.What did Hobbes think of humour?
A.It resulted in the narrow-mindedness of human beings.
B.It was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better.
C.It had the power to mirror personal glory and national values.
D.It made people view the world from another angle.
33.What is the author’s attitude towards political humour?
A.Worried. B.Disappointed.
C.Curious. D.Appreciative.
34.How is the fourth paragraph mainly developed?
A.By describing the process. B.By giving an example.
C.By comparing. D.By classifying.
35.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.Chaplin wasn’t aware of being laughed at.
B.The author feels helpless and sad about getting older.
C.Never be the one who laughs at other people.
D.The author is determined to face life with a sense of humour.

Ways to Get Your Laughter Back
Through all my school years, laughter was part of my life.My best friend and I came up with a name for the “really good”laughs. We called them Belly Rolls. That may sound silly, but it is the truth. However, after I realized I had “lost” my laughter, the first thing I thought of was how silly I was going to look and sound. 36 This is how you do it.
37 It will be a forced laugh.I know it sounds silly, but trust me, if you can’t laugh by yourself and be comfortable, it’s even harder to laugh in a social situation when you think people are judging you.
Watch only funny programs on TV and at the movies.Be very selective about what you watch. 38 If you cannot give up those programs absolutely, then watch only half an hour of them a day.Give yourself a fighting chance and make it a point to bring laughter into your life.
Invite your friends and family to make it funny!Don’t wait too long before you start laughing socially.Ask someone close to you to point out the fun in life.Maybe they can promise to tell a joke to you every day or sit with you during a half-hour situation comedy. 39
While driving, go over your day and remember everything funny. 40 Not only will this help you laugh more, but it will keep you feeling happy. If you are spending all your time remembering the good times you had for the day, it doesn’t leave much time to think negatively!
A.Look in a mirror and laugh.
B.Use this time in a positive way.
C.Laughter is so much more fun when you’re with someone else.
D.One easy way to find laughter is to watch funny movies on TV.
E.In our busy world, laughter seems to have been lost along the way.
F.If you’re a heavy watcher of news programs and political stations, it’s hard to feel happy.
G.If you haven’t truly laughed for a long time, you have to fake (假装) it till you make it.

Mom poured herself a glass of orange juice.“I’m worried about your grandma,” she said.I asked, “Why?” “Well, before she moved to Florida, she was active. But now she sleeps most of the day or watches television.I can’t get her out of the house, and she won’t try to make friends,” Mom replied. My grandma wanted to go back to New York. But she couldn’t live alone anymore. That was why my mom let her come to live with us in Florida.
“I’ll find a way to make Grandma love Florida,” I thought for a minute and said.Mom smiled and said, “I wish you could.” After school, I saw Grandma watching television and figured she hadn’t moved all day.In my room, I took out my collection.I had found many beautiful and special seashells. My favourite one was called Baby’s Ear.It’s a beautiful white seashell.Looking at my seashells gave me an idea.I went into the living room and sat on the sofa.
“Did you ever go to the beach when you were little, Grandma?” I asked.“Once my mother took me there, but I didn’t enjoy it because I was afraid of the water and couldn’t swim.Even now, I’m a little afraid of the water,” she replied.I wished Grandma could feel the way I did about the beach.I loved to see seabirds and look for seashells.“Well, could you take me to the beach, Grandma? I need some new seashells for my collection.I’m not allowed to go by myself. Please!” I begged.Grandma finally agreed and took my hand as we left the house.
We walked to the beach. The sky was blue.I handed Grandma a plastic bag, and said, “This is for the seashells you find.” “Oh, you should take it,” she said.I shook my head.“No, Grandma.I need all the help I can get.” “All right,” she said.

W:I’d planned to be a teacher, but then I was offered a good job doing marketing, so I changed my mind.

W:I am. I enjoy my job very much. By the way, have you not had any job offers yet?

W:It’s only recently that I’ve been able to start settling down. How about you? Are you still with Jenny?
M:Yeah, Jenny and I got married right after graduation. It was hard for the first three years — I was supporting us both while she continued her studies — but now things are getting better. I work as a manager in a trade company and she’s working at a law firm. It’s all started to come together and we’re finally able to make a life for ourselves.
W:Oh, that sounds wonderful. I have always known you two would make it. I hope I can keep in better contact with you.
M:Definitely! Actually, we just moved into a new place. There’s a house-warming party this Saturday, if you are free? I know Jenny would love to see you again and it should be a good party.
W:Sounds great! I am free this weekend and I’ll be there.

Bill Gates, an American inventor, computer programmer and businessman, is reportedly worth nearly $80 billion, making him one of the wealthiest people in the country today. He founded and was head of Microsoft for years.
Gates was born into a rich family in the state of Washington. His father was a lawyer; his mother was a banker. He is famous for being taken as the father of the modern computer. He studied at Harvard University but did not graduate because of his desire to develop new software.
As a 13-year-old student, Gates was introduced to computer programming. In 1975, Gates spoke to a company called Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). He convinced the owner of the company that he had written a program that would work well and make big money. The owner bought into Gates’ inventions, and the two men reached an agreement to develop software for the company. Then the Microsoft Company was born.
Gates went on to develop the Windows operating system with then partner IBM. The two companies had differences though, and their partnership ended quickly. Gates worked as CEO until 2000. He remained active with the company for several years before leaving the company in 2008. In 2014, Bill Gates became the technical advisor of the firm.

63.affects 考查时态和主谓一致。分析句子结构可知, 空处是when引导的条件状语从句的谓语动词, 并由全文时态可知应用一般现在时, 主语为something, 应用第三人称单数形式。故填affects。

第二节
We walked side by side on the beach. We looked for only the prettiest seashells.“It doesn’t look like there’s much to choose from; let’s go home,” Grandma said without interest.I encouraged her and looked back at her as I walked ahead.Grandma stood watching the ocean waves and the sea birds. She took off her shoes and carried them.A soft ocean wind blew her white hair across her eyes.I could feel that she became relaxed.
“Wow! Look what I found!” Grandma shouted, standing in the sand and holding a pink seashell.“How beautiful!” I said happily.Grandma nodded, smiled and said, “Let’s keep looking!” She was suddenly excited.I secretly threw another shell into the sand and pretended to pass by.Grandma found it, and she put it into her plastic bag happily. On the way home, Grandma seemed to forget the fear of water. She said, “I’m going to start collecting shells, too.” I’m glad to make her active again.

for two hours.
(Text 2)
W:What kind of college are you going to apply for?
M:My father wants me to go into business but my mother wants me
to go to medical school.
(Text 3)
M:How much time has passed since we started talking?
W:It’s been only 10 minutes.
M:So right now it should be 3:10 pm.
W:Correct.
(Text 4)
W:Where did you get the money to start your restaurant?
M:I have been saving my money for years.
W:Is there any other way to get money to start up a small business?
M:Yes, you can borrow some from a bank.
(Text 5)
W:Did you want to become a scientist when you were young?
M:No. I became interested in insects only after I entered university.
W:Are you happy with the working conditions in this university?
M:Yes. It provides me excellent equipment and enough funding to do
my work.
(Text 6)
M:What did you do after graduation?
W:I’d planned to be a teacher, but then I was offered a good job
doing marketing, so I changed my mind.
M:Sounds like you’re happy with your decision.
W:I am. I enjoy my job very much. By the way, have you not had
any job offers yet?
M:I had one, but I didn’t like the job very much. I’d also really
wanted to attend graduate school, but I was afraid I couldn’t pay

good. And oh, look! They give you a car to travel around. That’s
not bad, is it?
M:Do they say anything about needing to have experience of a
journalist?
W:No, they want someone young and energetic. Oh, yes, they
want a university graduate, so that’s OK. You’ve been to university.
The only thing is that you have to travel, but then that’s what the
company car is for.

(Text 8)
W:John, when you were little, what did you dream you’d grow up
to be?
M:Oh, I dreamed that I’d be a pilot when I grew up.

when you were a little girl?
W:When I was a little girl, I dreamed of being a great scientist,
but now, as you can see, I’m just a common office clerk.
M:So what are your dreams now?
W:Well, I really want to be a translator some day, so I’m working

M:You’re so good at language learning. Your French and Italian are

M:How time flies! How are things going with you?
W:It’s only recently that I’ve been able to start settling down. How
about you? Are you still with Jenny?
M:Yeah, Jenny and I got married right after graduation. It was
hard for the first three years — I was supporting us both while she
continued her studies — but now things are getting better. I work as a
manager in a trade company and she’s working at a law firm. It’s all
started to come together and we’re finally able to make a life for
ourselves.
W:Oh, that sounds wonderful. I have always known you two would
make it. I hope I can keep in better contact with you.
M:Definitely! Actually, we just moved into a new place. There’s a
house-warming party this Saturday, if you are free? I know Jenny
would love to see you again and it should be a good party.
W:Sounds great! I am free this weekend and I’ll be there.
(Text 10)
Bill Gates, an American inventor, computer programmer and
businessman, is reportedly worth nearly $80 billion, making him
one of the wealthiest people in the country today. He founded and was
head of Microsoft for years.
Gates was born into a rich family in the state of Washington. His
father was a lawyer; his mother was a banker. He is famous for being
taken as the father of the modern computer. He studied at Harvard
University but did not graduate because of his desire to develop new
software.
As a 13-year-old student, Gates was introduced to computer
programming. In 1975, Gates spoke to a company called Micro
Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). He convinced the
owner of the company that he had written a program that would work
well and make big money. The owner bought into Gates’ inventions,
and the two men reached an agreement to develop software for the
company. Then the Microsoft Company was born.
Gates went on to develop the Windows operating system with then
partner IBM. The two companies had differences though, and their
partnership ended quickly. Gates worked as CEO until 2000. He
remained active with the company for several years before leaving the
company in 2008. In 2014, Bill Gates became the technical advisor of
the firm.

Feeling good and having humour in our lives can do wonders for
our position and productivity, which means that there is definitely a
place for some humour on the job.Having a smiling face will help your
co-workers and supervisors feel better around you, and you may well
end up harvesting rewards by laughing more in the workplace. But you
need to know how to apply humour to your work environment.
One of the main rules with humour in the workplace is to avoid
argument when you are joking on the job.Stay well away from joking
about political affairs, race and religion.Never make fun of other
people within your organization, as you are trying to win friends
with the people you work with, and not set against them.If you can’t
help yourself, please be extremely careful.
Making jokes about the ups and downs of your trade is a safe way
to the place of work. You will have the benefit of knowing exactly what
your co-workers have to face each day, and it’s much better as it
helps to let go of tensions and lower stress levels by getting them to
chuckle (低声地笑) about the situations they come across
frequently.
The very best time for some humour is when you are not
working, but still in the region of the people you work with, such as
a coffee or lunch break. You can also make an effort to be funny on the
job, but when you are working, it’s a good idea to use jokes much
more thinly than you would normally do.
In general, humour in the workplace is a superb area to flex
your creative muscles and be a great help to your job.

A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humour.Humour has
been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who
disliked humour, and thought laughter is nothing else but sudden
glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others. He
thought humour to be a negative quality of human narrow-
mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon, PhD of Education, insists that
humour allows us to view the world from an angle that is amusing
rather than serious.I agree with Gordon.Learning to look at the world
through humour is important.
In the United States, every four years an election
occurs.Without humour as a way to express their feelings, how would
Americans be willing to support the election?Television shows like
The Daily Show have become important parts of American
culture. They are affecting the masses by unconsciously inputting
politics into their minds. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humour.Social humour
helps people through the twists and turns of the human
condition.American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self-image.On
the topic of self-image, Hari Kondabolu stands out.He has a joke
about the popular musical group The Pussycat Dolls, describing their
hit song Don’t Cha as a negative representation of women. He points
out the obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University Maryland has shown that
humour is one determining factor in selecting a partner.Among other
things, people look for an outstanding funny bone in a potential
partner.
Of course, humour is not always used for good
purposes.Humour can be linked to vulgarity (粗俗) and racism,
but, like everything else, it has the potential to unite human beings
by allowing us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connections
with one another.
Though life may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have
to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles (皱纹) to know
that there is comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn’t aware of.With
that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity.

Ways to Get Your Laughter Back
Through all my school years, laughter was part of my life.My
best friend and I came up with a name for the “really good”laughs. We
called them Belly Rolls. That may sound silly, but it is the
truth. However, after I realized I had “lost” my laughter, the first
thing I thought of was how silly I was going to look and
sound. 36 This is how you do it.
37 It will be a forced laugh.I know it sounds silly, but trust
me, if you can’t laugh by yourself and be comfortable, it’s even
harder to laugh in a social situation when you think people are judging
you.
Watch only funny programs on TV and at the movies.Be very
selective about what you watch. 38 If you cannot give up those
programs absolutely, then watch only half an hour of them a
day.Give yourself a fighting chance and make it a point to bring
laughter into your life.
Invite your friends and family to make it funny!Don’t wait too
long before you start laughing socially.Ask someone close to you to
point out the fun in life.Maybe they can promise to tell a joke to you
every day or sit with you during a half-hour situation comedy. 39
While driving, go over your day and remember everything
funny. 40 Not only will this help you laugh more, but it will keep
you feeling happy. If you are spending all your time remembering the
good times you had for the day, it doesn’t leave much time to think
negatively!
A. Look in a mirror and laugh.
B. Use this time in a positive way.
C. Laughter is so much more fun when you’re with someone else.
D. One easy way to find laughter is to watch funny movies on TV.
E. In our busy world, laughter seems to have been lost along the way.
F. If you’re a heavy watcher of news programs and political stations,
it’s hard to feel happy.
G. If you haven’t truly laughed for a long time, you have to fake (假
装) it till you make it.

Mom poured herself a glass of orange juice.“I’m worried about
your grandma,” she said.I asked, “Why?” “Well, before she
moved to Florida, she was active. But now she sleeps most of the day
or watches television.I can’t get her out of the house, and she won’t
try to make friends,” Mom replied. My grandma wanted to go back
to New York. But she couldn’t live alone anymore. That was why my
mom let her come to live with us in Florida.
“I’ll find a way to make Grandma love Florida,” I thought for a
minute and said.Mom smiled and said, “I wish you could.” After
school, I saw Grandma watching television and figured she hadn’t
moved all day.In my room, I took out my collection.I had found
many beautiful and special seashells. My favourite one was called
Baby’s Ear.It’s a beautiful white seashell.Looking at my seashells gave
me an idea.I went into the living room and sat on the sofa.
“Did you ever go to the beach when you were little,
Grandma?” I asked.“Once my mother took me there, but I didn’t
enjoy it because I was afraid of the water and couldn’t swim.Even
now, I’m a little afraid of the water,” she replied.I wished
Grandma could feel the way I did about the beach.I loved to see
seabirds and look for seashells.“Well, could you take me to the
beach, Grandma? I need some new seashells for my collection.I’m
not allowed to go by myself. Please!” I begged.Grandma finally
agreed and took my hand as we left the house.
We walked to the beach. The sky was blue.I handed Grandma a
plastic bag, and said, “This is for the seashells you find.” “Oh,
you should take it,” she said.I shook my head.“No, Grandma.I need
all the help I can get.” “All right,” she said.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
We walked side by side on the beach.

“Wow! Look what I found!” Grandma shouted, standing
in the sand and holding a pink seashell.

参考范文:
We walked side by side on the beach. We looked for only the
prettiest seashells.“It doesn’t look like there’s much to choose from;
let’s go home,” Grandma said without interest.I encouraged her and
looked back at her as I walked ahead.Grandma stood watching the
ocean waves and the sea birds. She took off her shoes and carried
them.A soft ocean wind blew her white hair across her eyes.I could feel
that she became relaxed.
“Wow! Look what I found!” Grandma shouted, standing in
the sand and holding a pink seashell.“How beautiful!” I said
happily.Grandma nodded, smiled and said, “Let’s keep looking!”
She was suddenly excited.I secretly threw another shell into the sand
and pretended to pass by.Grandma found it, and she put it into her
plastic bag happily. On the way home, Grandma seemed to forget the
fear of water. She said, “I’m going to start collecting shells, too.”
I’m glad to make her active again.
