In this entry to my blog series about successful multinational companies, I will check out the furniture chain IKEA.IKEA has been the world’s dominant furniture chain since 2008, according to Forbes magazine.
Swedish entrepreneur Ingvar Kamprad was only 17 years old when he started the company in 1943.These days, the chain has about 400 stores selling appliances, furniture and other household items in over 40 countries around the world. So how have they managed to become such a global hit, to me it seems that three features of the chain stand out: their dedication to research, their affordable prices and their eco-friendly reputation.
The executives of IKEA have long understood the need to research other markets in order to succeed globally. The company is constantly conducting research on how people use their furniture and what they are looking for. They recently conducted research in eight cities worldwide. This is how they learned, for example, that Korean customers want a special kimchif refrigerator.
But in order to sell at discount prices, they need to make and sell a lot of the same thing to keep costs low. This way, they can get low prices from suppliers, and charge super-low prices to their customers. As a result, they can keep their prices economical even during periods of inflation. This is why they will show the same products in different ways in their stores, depending on the local culture.A British bedroom display might have a British flag bedspread on it, whereas one in Tokyo may have a traditional mat on the floor. In China, IKEA’s fastest-growing market, domestic manufacturers make most of the products they sell in order to keep transport costs low.
A final selling point of the company is eco-friendly.A company representative recently said that they are working on creating new products out of materials we currently throw away, such as recycled plastic and foil.In some markets, they plan to market an electric bicycle, and in Seoul, they recently planted a tree to celebrate the opening of a new store.
Next week, I’ll look at other multinational companies which specialize in household goods and automobile production.
1.What’s one of the following reasons contributing to IKEA popularity in the world?
A.The fashionable feature.
B.The variety of furniture.

D.The automobile design.
2.How does IKEA sell products in low price?
A.By making all the products in China.
B.By adjusting the price in different periods.
C.By showing different products in the same way.
D.By producing and setting large amounts of the same products.
3.Why does IKEA have an eco-friendly reputation?
A.It has made some electric bicycles.
B.It has planted some trees.
C.New products out of recycled materials are created.
D.It keeps transport cost low for most of the products.
4.What’s the writer probably according to the passage?
A.A blogger. B.A reporter.
C.A teacher. D.A salesman.

A human-like robot has gotten a job working alongside humans at a factory for the first time.
Apollo, the autobot, has two arms, two legs and two eyes and is an average human height of 5 feet and 8 inches or 172 cm.The robot’s job is to fit boxes and containers and move them around the factory, but its designer, Apptronik, says future versions could be used to do housework around the home. While robotic machines are already used to sort grains, help doctors and police officers in training and clean the floor, Apollo is the first human-like robot to be put to work in a human job.
Apptronik said the robot was given human features such as arms and legs to help people feel more comfortable working with it.The robot only does basic tasks at the moment, but it will offer more and more features as the technology is developed.
At the moment, Apollo’s battery only lasts four hours, which means it has to do half day shifts compared to its human co-workers, who tend to work eight hours a day.Cardenas said that his company has built two Apollo robots so far and are now building four more.Apptronik plans to produce less than 100 test versions that companies can try out before it starts producing the final version in 2024.
Economists believe once robots like Apollo are mass-produced and introduced into the market, they could be used to fill jobs in aged care, manufacturing (制造业) and security.
Other companies in the race to build human-like robots include Tesla, Boston Dynamics, Samsung Electronics and Hanson Robotics.Last year, Tesla said it was planning to have thousands of human-like robots within its factories.Last year Tesla introduced its robot, Optimus, which is said to be learning to navigate (导航) on its own, sense the world around it, and pick things up on its own.Boston Dynamics introduced Atlas, considered the world’s most advanced human-like robot which has proved capable of walking, dancing, doing backflips (后空翻), and jumping.
5.What is special about Apollo?
A.It can help doctors. B.It can sort grams.
C.It can do housework in people’s homes. D.It can be put to work in a human job.
6.Why does the author mention Apollo’s battery?
A.It cuts down on labor costs. B.It has had complete changes.

Three-dimensional printing, a technology that creates objects layer by layer, has revolutionized (变革) the way we make things.Recently, a group of Chinese scientists took things a step further by using this technology to create realistic replicas (复制品) of human organs.
Previously, it was challenging to create a single material that could print different human organs due to their complexity. The research team from Chinese Academy of Sciences started by using hydrogel (水凝), a soft gel-like material as the main ingredient.
Human organs have various textures (质地), with our brains being the softest. To replicate the hardness of materials like bone, the researchers added metallic elements to the hydrogel and adjusted their ratio (比例) to create the texture of each organ.Besides, to make sure the printing results are correct, the team used light-curing (光固化) technology in the 3D printing process.A special lamp was placed under the printing machine, causing the gel to become solid right after it was printed.
According to the team’s paper published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials, they are able to produce organ models including the brain, lungs, and intestines (肠).These 3D printed organ models are essential for medical researches, such as testing medical equipment and demonstrating pared to live organs and animal models, they are also ethically (伦理上) acceptable since they are printed artificially. They can help researchers develop new treatments more efficiently, due to their lower relative cost, commented the Alliance of Advanced Biomedical Engineering website. However, this method is still developing, and experts are hoping it will be used in the medical field within a decade, according to CNN.
9.What was the main challenge in printing human organs?
A.The complexity of human organs.
B.The various textures of human organs.
C.The difficulty in creating proper materials.
D.The lack of appropriate printing technology.
10.How did the research team ensure the accuracy of the printing results?
A.By controlling the number of metallic elements.
B.By using light-curing technology before printing.
C.By solidifying the gel immediately after printing.
D.By putting a special lamp on the printing machine.
11.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.This technology is still in the period of theory.
B.3D printed organs are of great medical significance.
C.The printed organs are more effective in the treatment.
D.Live organs and animal models are more acceptable ethically.
12.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Power of 3D Printing B.Printing the Body Parts
C.Revolutionary Technology D.Finding New Materials for Organs

In this entry to my blog series about successful multinational
companies, I will check out the furniture chain IKEA. IKEA has been
the world’s dominant furniture chain since 2008, according to Forbes
magazine.
Swedish entrepreneur Ingvar Kamprad was only 17 years old when he
started the company in 1943.These days, the chain has about 400 stores
selling appliances, furniture and other household items in over 40
countries around the world. So how have they managed to become such a
global hit, to me it seems that three features of the chain stand out: their
dedication to research, their affordable prices and their eco-friendly
reputation.
The executives of IKEA have long understood the need to research
other markets in order to succeed globally. The company is constantly
conducting research on how people use their furniture and what they are
looking for. They recently conducted research in eight cities
worldwide. This is how they learned, for example, that Korean
customers want a special kimchif refrigerator.
But in order to sell at discount prices, they need to make and sell a
lot of the same thing to keep costs low. This way, they can get low prices
from suppliers, and charge super-low prices to their customers. As a
result, they can keep their prices economical even during periods of
inflation. This is why they will show the same products in different ways in
their stores, depending on the local culture.A British bedroom display
might have a British flag bedspread on it, whereas one in Tokyo may
have a traditional mat on the floor. In China, IKEA’s fastest-growing
market, domestic manufacturers make most of the products they sell in
order to keep transport costs low.
A final selling point of the company is eco-friendly.A company
representative recently said that they are working on creating new products
out of materials we currently throw away, such as recycled plastic and
foil.In some markets, they plan to market an electric bicycle, and in
Seoul, they recently planted a tree to celebrate the opening of a new
store.
Next week, I’ll look at other multinational companies which
specialize in household goods and automobile production.

A human-like robot has gotten a job working alongside humans at a
factory for the first time.
Apollo, the autobot, has two arms, two legs and two eyes and is
an average human height of 5 feet and 8 inches or 172 cm.The robot’s
job is to fit boxes and containers and move them around the factory, but
its designer, Apptronik, says future versions could be used to do
housework around the home. While robotic machines are already used to
sort grains, help doctors and police officers in training and clean the floor, Apollo is the first human-like robot to be put to work in a human job.
Apptronik said the robot was given human features such as arms and
legs to help people feel more comfortable working with it.The robot only
does basic tasks at the moment, but it will offer more and more features
as the technology is developed.
At the moment, Apollo’s battery only lasts four hours, which
means it has to do half day shifts compared to its human co-workers, who
tend to work eight hours a day.Cardenas said that his company has built
two Apollo robots so far and are now building four more.Apptronik plans
to produce less than 100 test versions that companies can try out before it
starts producing the final version in 2024.
Economists believe once robots like Apollo are mass-produced and
introduced into the market, they could be used to fill jobs in aged care,
manufacturing (制造业) and security.
Other companies in the race to build human-like robots include
Tesla, Boston Dynamics, Samsung Electronics and Hanson
Robotics.Last year, Tesla said it was planning to have thousands of
human-like robots within its factories.Last year Tesla introduced its
robot, Optimus, which is said to be learning to navigate (导航) on
its own, sense the world around it, and pick things up on its
own.Boston Dynamics introduced Atlas, considered the world’s most
advanced human-like robot which has proved capable of walking,
dancing, doing backflips (后空翻), and jumping.

Three-dimensional printing, a technology that creates objects layer
by layer, has revolutionized (变革) the way we make things.Recently, a group of Chinese scientists took things a step further by using this technology to create realistic replicas (复制品) of human organs.
Previously, it was challenging to create a single material that could
print different human organs due to their complexity. The research team
from Chinese Academy of Sciences started by using hydrogel (水凝),
a soft gel-like material as the main ingredient.
Human organs have various textures (质地), with our brains
being the softest. To replicate the hardness of materials like bone, the
researchers added metallic elements to the hydrogel and adjusted their ratio
(比例) to create the texture of each organ.Besides, to make sure the
printing results are correct, the team used light-curing (光固化)
technology in the 3D printing process.A special lamp was placed under the
printing machine, causing the gel to become solid right after it was
printed.
According to the team’s paper published in the journal Advanced
Functional Materials, they are able to produce organ models including
the brain, lungs, and intestines (肠).These 3D printed organ models
are essential for medical researches, such as testing medical equipment
and demonstrating pared to live organs and animal
models, they are also ethically (伦理上) acceptable since they are
printed artificially. They can help researchers develop new treatments more
efficiently, due to their lower relative cost, commented the Alliance of
Advanced Biomedical Engineering website. However, this method is still
developing, and experts are hoping it will be used in the medical field
within a decade, according to CNN.

will be able to detect changes in spending and credit activity and then
automatically contact the police.
  Transportation
17 . In the future, cars will be able to drive themselves (some
already do). We may also see automated trains and airplanes.
  Marketing
AI already targets you with customized ads on social media sites,
but soon it may even be able to create the ads you see or articles you read.
A. Health care
B. Find your way
C. Say goodbye to taxi and drivers
D. Robots are already used at some fast-food restaurants
E. AI-run robots are already used as security officers in some businesses
