It was a sunny afternoon in June 2022 when 20-year-old Anthony Perry stepped off the train at Chicago’s 69th Street station. On the platform, two men were fighting bitterly. Then the unthinkable happened: the pair fell over the edge and onto the tracks. One man ended up on his back.Suddenly, he started convulsing (抽搐) unnaturally. He had fallen on the third rail, the conduit (导线管) for the 600 volts of electricity that powers Chicago’s L trains. The aggressor leaped backward, bounded back up onto the platform and disappeared.
Perry couldn’t just stand there and watch. He sat at the edge of the platform and eased himself down.He took a few quick bounds and approached the victim. The guy looked dead, his body still moving violently as the electricity pulsed (搏动).Gathering up his courage, Perry reached down and grasped the victim’s wrist.Instantly, he felt a blast of electric shock shoot through his body.Perry shrank and jumped back.He reached down a second time, and was shocked again. But the third time he seized the man’s wrist and forearm and, braving the shock, pulled with all his strength. The guy’s body slid briefly along the third rail, coming to rest on the gravel on the outer edge of the tracks.
The man was breathing, but irregularly.Something wasn’t right.“Give him chest compressions (按压)!” yelled a woman.Perry was no expert, but for a few moments he worked on the man’s heart until the victim began convulsing. Then he heard a sudden noise behind him — medical workers and firefighters had arrived.Perry let the professionals take over. His heart still racing from the electric shocks, he climbed back up onto the platform, grabbed his things and headed home.
The evening news reported the incident. After a friend outed him to the media, Perry became the toast of Chicago.Perry was then recruited by the Chicago Fire Department and is now training to be an emergency medical technician.

B.The local newspaper interviewed him on the spot.
C.His chest compressions played a key role in saving life.
D.His heart beat fast because of nervousness and tiredness.
26.What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Perry landed a job in the Fire Department.
B.The city of Chicago awarded Perry a prize.
C.People in Chicago toasted Perry for his brave deeds.
D.Perry got popular and greatly admired in Chicago.
27.What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A.To credit a hero with saving a victim’s life.

Lionfish certainly aren’t the fastest predators at sea, but new research suggests that they can catch swift prey in an unhurried way, moving slowly in pursuit until the perfect moment to strike.“The finding may help explain part of the lionfish’s impact as an invasive (侵入的) species, and reveals a hunting approach that other relatively slow predators use,” researchers said.
Born with brightly colored stripes, lionfish often use coral reefs (珊瑚) as a protection and remain undetected long enough to follow and attack small fish. But the predators also feed in open water where they’re more visible.Curious about how these slow swimmers hunt in plain view, Ashley Peterson, a professor at the University of California, and her colleagues placed some red lionfish in a tank and recorded them as they chased down the green chromis, a kind of small reef fish.In 14 of the 23 trials, the lionfish successfully swallowed their prey. They also captured the chromis in 74 per cent of the trials where the lionfish made attempts to strike.
On average, chromis swam about twice as fast as lionfish. But chromis still fell victim to the way lionfish hunted — lionfish swim towards chromis, aiming for the prey’s current position.“If they’re interested in something, they never give up,” Peterson said.In contrast, the prey fish does bursts of fast swimming along with short pauses.“Over time, lionfish will take advantage of all those pauses to get closer and closer until they capture the prey,” Peterson said.“It would be interesting to see how lionfish’s chase plays out.”
If lionfish do use the strategy in the wild and the prey reacts similarly, it’s possible that the hunting method could contribute to the destructive potential of their invasion in the Caribbean, the western Atlantic and the Mediterranean, where the fish are eating native ocean animals and disrupting food webs. But other factors, such as lionfish’s huge appetite and fruitful reproduction, could be more influential on the invasiveness.
28.What does the new research focus on?
A.Defensive measures of lionfish. B.Slow predators’ hunting strategy.
C.The impact of different predators. D.Approaches to handling invasive species.
29.What does the author want to explain by the trials in Paragraph 2?
A.Small fish are much safer in open water.
B.Lionfish always pretend not to see their prey.
C.Lionfish have a high rate of successful strikes.
D.Fast prey tends not to be long-distance swimmers.
30.What can be inferred about lionfish during their hunting process?
A.They quietly pick up their speed.
B.They prefer more challenging prey.
C.They like to play tricky games with their prey.
D.They show great perseverance in capturing their prey.
31.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A.Slow predators may have the same characteristics.
B.Lionfish’ hunting style makes them dominate the oceans.
C.It’s time to deal with the limitations of the wild environment.
D.Lionfish are harmful to ocean creatures as an invasive species.

After nearly 70 years of space exploration, Earth is now surrounded by space junk.Recently, an accident made the clean-up more difficult to start.
According to the European Space Agency (ESA), scientists plan on testing their “junk truck”, ClearSpace-1, in 2025.It’s a spacecraft with four arms that can catch debris (碎片) and bring it back to Earth. They have chosen to bring back VESPA, a 113-kilogram, two-meter-wide rocket part. However, in August, it was hit by another piece of space junk, creating new pieces. The ESA is now revising its clean-up plan.
Most satellites today are sent into Earth’s low orbit, which reaches up to around 2,000 kilometers above the Earth. There, spacecraft are most likely to crash with each other. There may be as many as 170 million pieces of space junk in orbit.Big or small, any of the pieces can cause harm to a spacecraft.
In terms of the clean-up, scientists have some other ideas. One popular plan is to equip a spacecraft with harpoons (叉) and magnets (磁铁).The craft would shoot the harpoon to stick into the debris before “throwing” it back to Earth.Magnets could move the debris, changing its direction. The debris would burn after entering Earth’s atmosphere so there wouldn’t be much left when it reaches Earth.Scientists are also considering shooting lasers (激光) from spacecraft to heat up the debris’ surface, creating a small push that would change the debris’ orbit. This change would allow the debris to be caught by Earth’s gravity.
Space junk can be very dangerous, and space agencies around the world are testing and planning the clean-up.But why haven’t they done anything yet? One reason is the expense.
It would take between $4,000 and $60,000 per kilogram to catch one piece of debris larger than 10 cm.And around $300 million is needed to develop the laser technology.
32.What’s the mission of ClearSpace-1?
A.To mark Earth’s low orbit. B.To monitor space debris.
C.To study the harm of space junk. D.To bring VESPA back to Earth.
33.How do lasers work in cleaning up space debris?
A.By burning it up in space. B.By pushing it into deeper space.
C.By moving it towards a spacecraft. D.By redirecting it into the atmosphere.
34.What’s a disadvantage of the clean-up according to the last two paragraphs?
A.It’s complex. B.It’s risky.
C.It’s costly. D.It’s changeable.
35.What might be a suitable title for the text?
A.Escaping from Crowded Space B.Looking for Ways to Clean up Space
C.Dangerous Space Debris D.Exceptional Space Exploration

When Evan was 13, he wanted to have a dog.His mom Octavia refused since raising a dog would need lots of attention and care.
The boy once joined the Forest Exploration club of his school where Octavia taught. And the mother was in charge of the club. One morning, guided by Octavia, Evan and his schoolmates went hiking in a forest.During the hike, some purple flowers caught Evan’s eye.Evan thought those beautiful flowers could surely impress his mother. So he walked to the riverside secretly to pick those flowers.Unfortunately, Evan got separated from the group and got lost.
He anxiously kept walking, hoping he could catch up with the group.Suddenly, a dog appeared. At first, Evan thought it might be a wolf, so he tensed and stood there still. When the dog got closer, he saw its tail wagging (摇摆) gently.
“Oh, buddy. You scared me,” he said, petting the dog.“You must be a stray (走失的) dog, huh?” The dog looked at him with the most sincere expression.Evan wanted to find his way home, not only for himself but also for the animal. Therefore, he walked again. The moment Octavia realized Evan was gone, she and others began looking for Evan desperately, but in vain.
It was getting darker and colder.Evan discovered a cave.He went inside and made a fire to keep warm.He knew his mom and other schoolmates must have been searching the forest for him.“Buddy, let’s wait here and see if we can hear my group calling,” Evan told the dog.And they sat near each other. Before long, Evan fell asleep.
At some point, he heard the sound of animal growling (低声吼叫) and noticed the dog at the entrance of their shelter. The dog was growling at something that Evan couldn’t see well. But there was another animal growling back.Evan wiped his eyes and tried to see what made the dog so alert and angry. He then saw a big fox, and said to himself, “Thank goodness! I’m not alone!” But he was still frightened. The fox moved forward, wanting to attack Evan.

M:Hello! This is Bill Smith from the Greenhouse Club. May I speak to Mr Jones?
W:I’m sorry, but my dad isn’t at home right now. He won’t be back until six o’clock. I can give you his office phone number.
(Text 2)
M:Have a nice weekend! I will go camping. Do you have anything exciting planned?
W:Not really. I was thinking of renting a boat at the Water Park with my classmates, but the national English competition is coming up, so I will probably have to prepare for it.
(Text 3)
M:Do you usually get up at 6 every morning?
W:Yes. It’s not too hard because I go to bed around 10 every night. I want to be sure to get enough sleep every night.
M:That’s good. I don’t get nearly enough. I sleep only about six hours every night.
(Text 4)
W:Have you heard about Tim? He’s in hospital again.
M:What happened? I’ve never heard he is suffering from any illnesses.
W:He was driving too fast again. I guess he didn’t learn his lesson from last time.
M:I’m so sorry to hear that.
(Text 5)
W:Uh-oh. It looks like there’s a problem.
M:Yeah, I’m afraid so. Last Friday this elevator was out of service all day long.
W:Do you think I should press the emergency button?
M:Let’s just wait a minute or two first. It may start again by itself.
(Text 6)
W:Can I help you?
M:I need to find a specific magazine, and I am not sure where to look for. Where are the old magazines?
W:The magazines that are a bit older than one year are on the left of the first floor, and the magazines that are less than one year old are at the end of the right side. They’re near the reading room. How old is your magazine?
M:It came out about two and a half years ago, so I guess I’d find it on the left side of the first floor then, right?
W:I’m afraid not. Magazines that are more than two years old are kept on the second floor.
M:Can you help me look for it?
W:OK.
(Text 7)
W:Hey, wake up, sleepy head.
M:I fell asleep. Are we there?
W:Yes, we finally make it to Disney World. We are in the parking lot. It might not be a bad idea to have a quick lunch and start our journey.
M:I couldn’t wait to go to Epcot.
W:Epcot should be put on the list of “To Dos” but I’ve heard that Epcot is really sweet at night.
M:It sounds reasonable. What about the indoor roller coaster? It’s thrilling! I’m dying for it.
W:Oh, no. I’m afraid it would be really scary especially when it is totally in the dark.
M:Ugh. Then we might find a hotel and get checked in before lunch.
W:I can’t agree more.
(Text 8)
W:I called you last week but your mother said you were sightseeing in Italy. Did you go to Rome?
M:No. I went to Rome last year and Milan the year before last, so this year I went to Ferrara. You may not have heard about it, as it isn’t one of the most famous Italian cities.
W:Oh, I’ve heard about it before. It’s known as the City of the Renaissance, right? I’ve never visited it before, though. How was your time there?
M:It was great. I visited the city centre. The cathedral and the castle are both there in the heart of the city, and both are amazing. I didn’t go to the cathedral, because it was very crowded.
W:What else did you visit there?
M:After I left the castle, I went to visit the historic part of the city, which has a lot of buildings from the Renaissance. Then I visited several palaces and churches.
W:You seem to really like travelling.
M:Yes, I love it. I usually travel abroad twice a year, and this year I’ve taken one more trip than usual.
(Text 9)
M:I didn’t even realize there was a festival coming up.
W:Why? You didn’t know about Easter? There are many traditions connected to it.
M:I knew a little about it and didn’t know it was in April. I thought it might be some day after Mother’s Day.
W:Easter is observed on a Sunday in March or April. It is truly worth celebrating in the spring. We are all looking forward to the holiday. Mother will make a big Easter basket for each of us with presents like chocolate bars, candies and even a CD. We go to a church service on Friday morning. We dye our Easter eggs on Saturday morning and visit our grandparents that afternoon. But the best part for me is the Easter Egg Hunt. On Easter morning, parents hide Easter eggs in different places for us to find. It is almost as much fun as Halloween.
M:Green with envy. I will probably hang out with the other international students. I might also stay in the dorm. Remember, Linda assigned a huge book for us to read.
W:Pooh. That’s boring. Why not come with me?
M:Well, I’m OK. I may just spend the holiday myself.
W:Come on. My parents will be happy to have you with us.
M:Serious? Cool!
(Text 10)
Hello, listeners! I’d like to share with you a bit about what it’s like to live here at the South Pole. I’m a scientist and I arrived here in Antarctica three months ago, in December. The temperature at that time was cold but not unpleasant yet. Since arriving, I’ve worked with about 60 other people getting everything ready for the Antarctica winter. It’s been a lot of hard work, but it has been fun, too.
However, a few days ago the ship left, taking most of the staff with it, and it won’t be back to fetch us until next December. So the hardest thing to get used to now is that there are just 14 of us here. It’s been difficult to adjust because I’m used to working in a large group.
I’m living at the same work station I was at ten years ago. It was new then, but it’s still in good condition and generally unchanged. The dried food we get is also the same. The people working here with me are all different from the year ago, but I’m always happy getting to know new people. Ten years ago, we were able to send faxes to friends and family once a month, but today we can send e-mails and talk on the phone so we don’t feel so far away.
Last week we went out exploring for a few days. It was dangerous. We went together everywhere in case we fell into any holes in the ice. Holes here are much too deep to climb out of. The skies last week were beautifully clear, and I was reminded how lucky I am to be here.

“It’s my mom! Let’s go!” Evan excitedly told the dog and ran to Octavia.“Evan! Evan!” Octavia cried and Evan rushed into her arms.Evan’s eyes clouded with tears. He hugged his mother and apologized for secretly walking away from the group. Then, Evan explained what the dog had done for him and begged not to leave the dog.Octavia happily nodded. After returning home, Octavia prepared a bowl for the dog and said, “Thank you for keeping my boy safe.” During the following days, they didn’t find the dog’s owner. Thus, Evan asked, “Mom, can we keep him?” “Sure, he’s a family member now,” Octavia agreed.

听力材料:
(Text 1)
M:Hello! This is Bill Smith from the Greenhouse Club. May I speak to
Mr Jones?
W:I’m sorry, but my dad isn’t at home right now. He won’t be
back until six o’clock. I can give you his office phone number.
(Text 2)
M:Have a nice weekend! I will go camping. Do you have anything
exciting planned?
W:Not really. I was thinking of renting a boat at the Water Park with my
classmates, but the national English competition is coming up, so I will
probably have to prepare for it.
(Text 3)
M:Do you usually get up at 6 every morning?
W:Yes. It’s not too hard because I go to bed around 10 every night. I
want to be sure to get enough sleep every night.
M:That’s good. I don’t get nearly enough. I sleep only about six
hours every night.
(Text 4)
W:Have you heard about Tim? He’s in hospital again.
M:What happened? I’ve never heard he is suffering from any
illnesses.
W:He was driving too fast again. I guess he didn’t learn his lesson
from last time.
M:I’m so sorry to hear that.
(Text 5)
W:Uh-oh. It looks like there’s a problem.
M:Yeah, I’m afraid so. Last Friday this elevator was out of service all
day long.
W:Do you think I should press the emergency button?
M:Let’s just wait a minute or two first. It may start again by itself.
(Text 6)
W:Can I help you?
M:I need to find a specific magazine, and I am not sure where to look
for. Where are the old magazines?
W:The magazines that are a bit older than one year are on the left of the
first floor, and the magazines that are less than one year old are at the end
of the right side. They’re near the reading room. How old is your
magazine?
M:It came out about two and a half years ago, so I guess I’d find it on
the left side of the first floor then, right?
W:I’m afraid not. Magazines that are more than two years old are kept
on the second floor.
W:Epcot should be put on the list of “To Dos” but I’ve heard that
Epcot is really sweet at night.
M:It sounds reasonable. What about the indoor roller coaster? It’s
thrilling! I’m dying for it.
W:Oh, no. I’m afraid it would be really scary especially when it is
totally in the dark.
M:Ugh. Then we might find a hotel and get checked in before lunch.
W:I can’t agree more.
(Text 8)
W:I called you last week but your mother said you were sightseeing in
Italy. Did you go to Rome?
M:No. I went to Rome last year and Milan the year before last, so this
year I went to Ferrara. You may not have heard about it, as it isn’t one
of the most famous Italian cities.
W:Oh, I’ve heard about it before. It’s known as the City of the
Renaissance, right? I’ve never visited it before, though. How was
your time there?
M:It was great. I visited the city centre. The cathedral and the castle are
both there in the heart of the city, and both are amazing. I didn’t go to
the cathedral, because it was very crowded.
W:What else did you visit there?
M:After I left the castle, I went to visit the historic part of the city,
which has a lot of buildings from the Renaissance. Then I visited several
palaces and churches.
W:You seem to really like travelling.
M:Yes, I love it. I usually travel abroad twice a year, and this year
I’ve taken one more trip than usual.
(Text 9)
M:I didn’t even realize there was a festival coming up.
W:Why? You didn’t know about Easter? There are many traditions
connected to it.
M:I knew a little about it and didn’t know it was in April. I thought it
might be some day after Mother’s Day.
W:Easter is observed on a Sunday in March or April. It is truly worth
celebrating in the spring. We are all looking forward to the holiday.
Mother will make a big Easter basket for each of us with presents like
chocolate bars, candies and even a CD. We go to a church service on
Friday morning. We dye our Easter eggs on Saturday morning and visit
our grandparents that afternoon. But the best part for me is the Easter Egg
Hunt. On Easter morning, parents hide Easter eggs in different places for
us to find. It is almost as much fun as Halloween.
M:Green with envy. I will probably hang out with the other international
students. I might also stay in the dorm. Remember, Linda assigned a
huge book for us to read.
W:Pooh. That’s boring. Why not come with me?
M:Well, I’m OK. I may just spend the holiday myself.
W:Come on. My parents will be happy to have you with us.
M:Serious? Cool!
(Text 10)
Hello, listeners! I’d like to share with you a bit about what it’s
like to live here at the South Pole. I’m a scientist and I arrived here in
Antarctica three months ago, in December. The temperature at that time
was cold but not unpleasant yet. Since arriving, I’ve worked with about
60 other people getting everything ready for the Antarctica winter. It’s
been a lot of hard work, but it has been fun, too.
However, a few days ago the ship left, taking most of the staff
with it, and it won’t be back to fetch us until next December. So the
hardest thing to get used to now is that there are just 14 of us here. It’s
been difficult to adjust because I’m used to working in a large group.
I’m living at the same work station I was at ten years ago. It was
new then, but it’s still in good condition and generally unchanged. The
dried food we get is also the same. The people working here with me are
all different from the year ago, but I’m always happy getting to know
new people. Ten years ago, we were able to send faxes to friends and
family once a month, but today we can send e-mails and talk on the
phone so we don’t feel so far away.
Last week we went out exploring for a few days. It was dangerous.
We went together everywhere in case we fell into any holes in the ice.
Holes here are much too deep to climb out of. The skies last week were
beautifully clear, and I was reminded how lucky I am to be here.

Homer
Homer provides a personalized learning path for children aged 2 to 8.
Children will learn reading, math, creative thinking, and problem-

approach, Homer customizes learning plans and allows students to take
the lead in deciding what they want to work on. The price point is in line
with similar apps at about $5 per month after a free trial, or roughly $60
for a full year or $100 for lifetime access.
Hooked on Phonics

wide range of lessons, games, and fun activities. It is one of the most
popular brands for teaching kids to read, and its integrated system makes

each new concept through a series of fun activities, videos, and even
songs. The system is a little bit pricier than other apps, at about $16 per
month after a trial month for roughly $1.
FarFaria
FarFaria invites children to join in on a magical adventure that includes island hopping and the choice between reading the story or having it narrated completely with fun, magical animation. While the free membership offers one story a day, paid subscribers unlock access to unlimited adventures at roughly $8 per month. Readers can either read the books themselves or take advantage of the “read to me” option to have stories read aloud by professional narrators.

It was a sunny afternoon in June 2022 when 20-year-old Anthony
Perry stepped off the train at Chicago’s 69th Street station. On the
platform, two men were fighting bitterly. Then the unthinkable
happened: the pair fell over the edge and onto the tracks. One man ended
up on his back.Suddenly, he started convulsing (抽搐)
unnaturally. He had fallen on the third rail, the conduit (导线管) for
the 600 volts of electricity that powers Chicago’s L trains. The aggressor
leaped backward, bounded back up onto the platform and disappeared.
Perry couldn’t just stand there and watch. He sat at the edge of the
platform and eased himself down.He took a few quick bounds and
approached the victim. The guy looked dead, his body still moving
violently as the electricity pulsed (搏动).Gathering up his courage,
Perry reached down and grasped the victim’s wrist.Instantly, he felt a
blast of electric shock shoot through his body.Perry shrank and jumped
back.He reached down a second time, and was shocked again. But the
third time he seized the man’s wrist and forearm and, braving the
shock, pulled with all his strength. The guy’s body slid briefly along the
third rail, coming to rest on the gravel on the outer edge of the tracks.
The man was breathing, but irregularly.Something wasn’t
right.“Give him chest compressions (按压)!” yelled a
woman.Perry was no expert, but for a few moments he worked on the
man’s heart until the victim began convulsing. Then he heard a sudden
noise behind him — medical workers and firefighters had arrived.Perry let
the professionals take over. His heart still racing from the electric shocks,
he climbed back up onto the platform, grabbed his things and headed
home.
The evening news reported the incident. After a friend outed him to
the media, Perry became the toast of Chicago.Perry was then recruited
by the Chicago Fire Department and is now training to be an emergency
medical technician.

Lionfish certainly aren’t the fastest predators at sea, but new
research suggests that they can catch swift prey in an unhurried way,
moving slowly in pursuit until the perfect moment to strike.“The finding
may help explain part of the lionfish’s impact as an invasive (侵入的)
species, and reveals a hunting approach that other relatively slow
predators use,” researchers said.
Born with brightly colored stripes, lionfish often use coral reefs
(珊瑚) as a protection and remain undetected long enough to follow and
attack small fish. But the predators also feed in open water where they’re
more visible.Curious about how these slow swimmers hunt in plain
view, Ashley Peterson, a professor at the University of California,
and her colleagues placed some red lionfish in a tank and recorded them as
they chased down the green chromis, a kind of small reef fish.In 14 of
the 23 trials, the lionfish successfully swallowed their prey. They also
captured the chromis in 74 per cent of the trials where the lionfish made
attempts to strike.
On average, chromis swam about twice as fast as lionfish. But
chromis still fell victim to the way lionfish hunted — lionfish swim
towards chromis, aiming for the prey’s current position.“If they’re
interested in something, they never give up,” Peterson said.In
contrast, the prey fish does bursts of fast swimming along with short
pauses.“Over time, lionfish will take advantage of all those pauses to
get closer and closer until they capture the prey,” Peterson said.“It
would be interesting to see how lionfish’s chase plays out.”
If lionfish do use the strategy in the wild and the prey reacts
similarly, it’s possible that the hunting method could contribute to the
destructive potential of their invasion in the Caribbean, the western
Atlantic and the Mediterranean, where the fish are eating native ocean
animals and disrupting food webs. But other factors, such as lionfish’s
huge appetite and fruitful reproduction, could be more influential on the
invasiveness.

After nearly 70 years of space exploration, Earth is now surrounded
by space junk.Recently, an accident made the clean-up more difficult to
start.
According to the European Space Agency (ESA), scientists plan
on testing their “junk truck”, ClearSpace-1, in 2025.It’s a
spacecraft with four arms that can catch debris (碎片) and bring it back
to Earth. They have chosen to bring back VESPA, a 113-kilogram, two-
meter-wide rocket part. However, in August, it was hit by another piece
of space junk, creating new pieces. The ESA is now revising its clean-up
plan.
Most satellites today are sent into Earth’s low orbit, which reaches
up to around 2,000 kilometers above the Earth. There, spacecraft are
most likely to crash with each other. There may be as many as 170 million
pieces of space junk in orbit.Big or small, any of the pieces can cause
harm to a spacecraft.
In terms of the clean-up, scientists have some other ideas. One
popular plan is to equip a spacecraft with harpoons (叉) and magnets
(磁铁).The craft would shoot the harpoon to stick into the debris before
“throwing” it back to Earth.Magnets could move the debris, changing
its direction. The debris would burn after entering Earth’s atmosphere so
there wouldn’t be much left when it reaches Earth.Scientists are also
considering shooting lasers (激光) from spacecraft to heat up the
debris’ surface, creating a small push that would change the debris’
orbit. This change would allow the debris to be caught by Earth’s
gravity.
Space junk can be very dangerous, and space agencies around the
world are testing and planning the clean-up.But why haven’t they done
anything yet? One reason is the expense.
It would take between $4,000 and $60,000 per kilogram to catch
one piece of debris larger than 10 cm.And around $300 million is needed
to develop the laser technology.

When Evan was 13, he wanted to have a dog.His mom Octavia
refused since raising a dog would need lots of attention and care.
The boy once joined the Forest Exploration club of his school where
Octavia taught. And the mother was in charge of the club. One morning,
guided by Octavia, Evan and his schoolmates went hiking in a
forest.During the hike, some purple flowers caught Evan’s eye.Evan
thought those beautiful flowers could surely impress his mother. So he
walked to the riverside secretly to pick those flowers.Unfortunately,
Evan got separated from the group and got lost.
He anxiously kept walking, hoping he could catch up with the
group.Suddenly, a dog appeared. At first, Evan thought it might be a
wolf, so he tensed and stood there still. When the dog got closer, he
saw its tail wagging (摇摆) gently.
“Oh, buddy. You scared me,” he said, petting the dog.“You
must be a stray (走失的) dog, huh?” The dog looked at him with
the most sincere expression.Evan wanted to find his way home, not only
for himself but also for the animal. Therefore, he walked again. The
moment Octavia realized Evan was gone, she and others began looking
for Evan desperately, but in vain.
It was getting darker and colder.Evan discovered a cave.He went
inside and made a fire to keep warm.He knew his mom and other
schoolmates must have been searching the forest for him.“Buddy,
let’s wait here and see if we can hear my group calling,” Evan told the
dog.And they sat near each other. Before long, Evan fell asleep.
At some point, he heard the sound of animal growling (低声吼
叫) and noticed the dog at the entrance of their shelter. The dog was
growling at something that Evan couldn’t see well. But there was another
animal growling back.Evan wiped his eyes and tried to see what made the
dog so alert and angry. He then saw a big fox, and said to himself,
“Thank goodness! I’m not alone!” But he was still frightened. The
fox moved forward, wanting to attack Evan.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
Without stepping back, the brave dog continued barking, ready
to attack the fox.
“It’s my mom! Let’s go!” Evan excitedly told the dog and

Without stepping back, the brave dog continued barking, ready to
attack the fox.Daring not to step forward anymore, the fox stood still for
minutes while the dog remained before Evan, keeping barking and
exposing his sharp teeth.Eventually, the fox left; the dog stopped
growling but stayed aware.Minutes later, the dog eased and returned to
Evan’s side, providing much-needed warmth.Evan felt safe and so
thankful. When day broke, Evan continued walking to look for his
group, and the dog accompanied him.At last, he heard his mom yelling
out his name.
“It’s my mom! Let’s go!” Evan excitedly told the dog and ran to
Octavia.“Evan! Evan!” Octavia cried and Evan rushed into her
arms.Evan’s eyes clouded with tears. He hugged his mother and
apologized for secretly walking away from the group. Then, Evan
explained what the dog had done for him and begged not to leave the
dog.Octavia happily nodded. After returning home, Octavia prepared a
bowl for the dog and said, “Thank you for keeping my boy safe.”
During the following days, they didn’t find the dog’s owner. Thus,
Evan asked, “Mom, can we keep him?” “Sure, he’s a family
member now,” Octavia agreed.
