Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives searching for truths.
Sir Isaac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist, was very smart, but nonetheless, that didn’t stop him from doing some pretty stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge he often did the strangest experiments.Once, while testing how light passed through lenses, he put a long needle into his eye, pushed it to the back, and then moved it around just to see what would happen.Luckily, nothing long-lasting did.On another occasion he stared at the sun for as long as he could bear, to discover what effect this would have on his sight.Again he escaped suffering permanent damage, though he had to spend some days in a darkened room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1770s the Swedish chemist Carl Scheele was the first person to find a way to produce phosphorus (磷).He in fact discovered eight more chemical elements including chlorine, though he didn’t get any acclaim for them.He was a very clever scientist, but his one failing was a curious habit of tasting some of every substance he worked with. This risky practice finally caught up with him, and in 1786 he was found dead in his laboratory surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist. He spent a large part of his life studying craters (火山口) on the Moon, and how they were formed, and later did research into the comets of the planet Jupiter. In 1997 he and his wife were in the Australian desert where they went every year to search for places where comets might have hit the Earth. While driving in the Tanami desert, normally one of the emptiest places in the world, another vehicle crashed into them and Shoemaker was killed on the spot. Some of his ashes were sent to the Moon aboard the Lunar Prospector spacecraft and left there — he is the only person who has had this honor.

At Beijing’s Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands still, but the clocks keep ticking at a small workshop. This is where clock conservator Qi Haonan works. As the fourth generation to repair and restore antique clocks at the museum since 1949, Qi has returned more than 100 timepieces to their former glory.
“What amazes me most about these clocks is that they combine the scientific advances, technological precision and the trend in decorative art of their particular era.I want to enable more people to marvel (惊叹) at the mechanics,” Qi says, adding that through short-video platforms, where his accounts have attracted more than 3 million followers, he can share with a wider audience just how magnificent the clocks are when they are fully functional.
“These clocks are rare treasures, not only serving as a plaything for emperors, but also witnessing the development of the mechanical weaving machine,” Qi says.He notes that the job requires extreme patience, because clock restoration is a dull and painstaking process, adding that it is proof positive of the proverb “More haste, less speed” and, in this case, haste can do a great deal of damage.
Although the antique clock repairing techniques at the Palace Museum were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014, it was a little-known skill and in short supply of career candidates before 2016, when three-part TV documentary, Masters in the Forbidden City, brought the profession into the national consciousness. Before the release of the documentary, for a decade it had just been he and his mentor Wang Jin doing the job. They tried to recruit graduates from college, but nobody applied.Qi didn’t expect that the documentary would make that profession a big hit.As a result, in 2017, Qi got two apprentices (学徒) and Wang got three.
“With the rising attention and influence, antique clock restoration can not only be further developed, but also be expanded to more museums that house antique clocks and watches,” Qi says.

He has gained many achievements in his life despite the fact that he had polio(小儿麻痹症) as a child.
But it wasn’t until he returned to art that he truly felt fulfilled.
While driving in the Tanami desert, normally one of the emptiest places in the world, another vehicle crashed into them and Shoemaker was killed on the spot.
What amazes me most about these clocks is that they combine the scientific advances, technological precision and the trend in decorative art of their particular era.
He notes that the job requires extreme patience ...and, in this case, haste can do a great deal of damage.
Masters in the Forbidden City, brought the profession into the national consciousness ...As a result, in 2017, Qi got two apprentices (学徒) and Wang got three. Masters in the Forbidden City揭露了鲜为人知的职业——古钟表修复。

He applied to several colleges和下文Then he applied to Louisiana State University可知,这里表示他向内布拉斯加州大学提出申请。sign up for报名(参加课程);apply to向……申请;attend to处理,照料;search for寻找。

22.B 这里it是形式主语,真正的主语是strong endurance and determination to reach them。
Sometimes rejection may 13 a more certain path to our final goals.
26.B 根据上文the pain that comes from disappointment和空后的outcome of being rejected可知,这里指被拒绝的负面结果。

he lost the use of his legs.In 1962, his doctor said, “The best thing for
a kid with polio would be to swim in a warm-water pool.” So,
arrangements were made for the boy to practice swimming. In the water,
he felt a freedom that he didn’t experience anywhere else.In 1977,
Burns discovered the Paralympic Games. He spent the next 27 years in
international swimming competitions, some of which resulted in five
world records.
In 1984, Burns moved to Taiwan Province where he studied Chinese
art. From 1989 to 1990, he worked as a teacher at Studio
Classroom.Over the years, Burns had many interesting jobs. But it
wasn’t until he returned to art that he truly felt fulfilled. He went back to
school and completed a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in 1999.Then,
working as a full-time artist, Burns uses his art to inspire people of all
ages.He has a special interest in disadvantaged children. He employs art
classes and other methods to help them to look within and make the most
of the skills they do have and not to let the disabilities stand in their way
when achieving their goals.
Today Burns is recognized as a world-class athlete, a motivational
speaker and a notable artist. He has always aspired to excellence and
encourages others to do the same.
He suggests everyone should embrace and celebrate those things that

Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives
searching for truths.
Sir Isaac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist, was very
smart, but nonetheless, that didn’t stop him from doing some pretty
stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge he often did the strangest
experiments.Once, while testing how light passed through lenses, he
put a long needle into his eye, pushed it to the back, and then moved it
around just to see what would happen.Luckily, nothing long-lasting
did.On another occasion he stared at the sun for as long as he could bear,
to discover what effect this would have on his sight.Again he escaped
suffering permanent damage, though he had to spend some days in a
darkened room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1770s the Swedish chemist Carl Scheele was the first person to
find a way to produce phosphorus (磷).He in fact discovered eight
more chemical elements including chlorine, though he didn’t get any
acclaim for them.He was a very clever scientist, but his one failing was a
curious habit of tasting some of every substance he worked with. This risky
practice finally caught up with him, and in 1786 he was found dead in his
laboratory surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of
which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist. He spent a large part of
his life studying craters (火山口) on the Moon, and how they were
formed, and later did research into the comets of the planet Jupiter. In
1997 he and his wife were in the Australian desert where they went every
year to search for places where comets might have hit the Earth. While
driving in the Tanami desert, normally one of the emptiest places in the
world, another vehicle crashed into them and Shoemaker was killed on
the spot. Some of his ashes were sent to the Moon aboard the Lunar
Prospector spacecraft and left there — he is the only person who has had
this honor.

At Beijing’s Palace Museum, it sometimes seems that time stands
still, but the clocks keep ticking at a small workshop. This is where clock
conservator Qi Haonan works. As the fourth generation to repair and
restore antique clocks at the museum since 1949, Qi has returned more
than 100 timepieces to their former glory.
“What amazes me most about these clocks is that they combine the
scientific advances, technological precision and the trend in decorative
art of their particular era.I want to enable more people to marvel (惊叹)
at the mechanics,” Qi says, adding that through short-video
platforms, where his accounts have attracted more than 3 million
followers, he can share with a wider audience just how magnificent the
clocks are when they are fully functional.
“These clocks are rare treasures, not only serving as a plaything for
emperors, but also witnessing the development of the mechanical
weaving machine,” Qi says.He notes that the job requires extreme
patience, because clock restoration is a dull and painstaking process,
adding that it is proof positive of the proverb “More haste, less speed”
and, in this case, haste can do a great deal of damage.
Although the antique clock repairing techniques at the Palace
Museum were listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2014, it
was a little-known skill and in short supply of career candidates before
2016, when three-part TV documentary, Masters in the Forbidden
City, brought the profession into the national consciousness. Before the
release of the documentary, for a decade it had just been he and his
mentor Wang Jin doing the job. They tried to recruit graduates from
college, but nobody applied.Qi didn’t expect that the documentary
would make that profession a big hit.As a result, in 2017, Qi got two
apprentices (学徒) and Wang got three.
“With the rising attention and influence, antique clock restoration
can not only be further developed, but also be expanded to more
museums that house antique clocks and watches,” Qi says.
