Many often find themselves considering jobs below their skill level in worsening employment markets. But it turns out that working in a job below your skill level harms your later chances of getting hired for a better-paying job more appropriate to your qualifications.
Sociologist David Pedulla at the University of Texas conducted a study to examine how jobs below a person’s skill level affect future employability. He tailored 2,420 applications and submitted them to 1,210 job listings posted in five major cities across the US.He varied the applications by gender, and also by employment status for the previous year. Then he used computer models to analyze and compare the results. The results show that applicants who were positioned as working below their skill level, regardless of gender had the lowest chances of getting called for a job interview.
These results should serve as a warning to anyone considering taking a job below their skill level. While it might pay the bills in the short term, it can significantly hammer one’s ability to return to the relevant skill level and pay grade at a later date.
Why might this be the case? Pedulla conducted a follow-up study with 903 employers. He asked them about their ideas of applicants with each kind of employment history, and how likely they would be to recommend each kind of candidate to an interview. The results show that employers believe that men who are employed in positions below their skill level are less committed and less competent than men in other employment situations. Those surveyed also believed that women working below their skill level were less competent than others, but did not believe them to be less committed.
The results of studies suggest that work below skill level signals to employers men’s incompetence and a lack of commitment. This is a disturbing reminder that the sword of gender bias (偏见) does in fact cut both ways.

The sun was rising as we drove across the Minnesota state line to New York for my new Ph.D.program.The move was good for me professionally, but I worried about my husband and daughters.I also feared that I wouldn’t be able to give my kids the childhood they deserved.
Anne, our first daughter, who is brilliant, came into the world when I was a junior majoring in biology in college. It was challenging to balance classes, work schedules, and being a mom.But I got through it and persuaded myself, finding moments of joy along the way.On the nights when I was home, I’d read my class notes out loud with my daughter. She’d respond by asking impressive questions, such as “Mom, what are bacteria?” It helped us both learn.
After I graduated, I knew that I would need a Ph.D.to land the kind of job I was fascinated by.I arrived in New York feeling more than the usual new-grad-student anxiety.I also suffered from a more personal fear that I was being selfish — that my decision to invigorate my career was going to have long-term negative impacts on my kids.
Over the past year, though, I’ve started to let go of some of this worry.I’ve realized that we have not only adapted to our new situation, but things are getting better. My husband landed a job that he is happy with.Anne dreams of becoming a marine biologist.Recently, while driving past the cancer institution I work at, Anne said, “Thinking about people having cancer is so sad, but I feel better knowing that you are researching it to help.”
Navigating academia as a young mother is hard, but it’s also rewarding. My kids are learning to look at the world through the lens of science, and watching their mom succeed inspires them.I look forward to seeing them follow my footsteps, whatever path they choose.
5.How did the writer feel about the move for her Ph.D.program?( )

A.Onwards and Upwards
B.Double Gains of Mom’s Pursuit
C.Like Mother Like Daughter
D.Generation Gap Narrowed by Love

Imagine you found a wallet containing a stranger’s contact details but no cash.Would you return it to its owner? Now imagine the same wallet contained a few banknotes.Would that change your response? Does it depend on the amount of money? And how do you think other people would react?
Honesty makes the world go round.Without people trusting in one another, society would fall apart.Honesty is therefore studied academically. Most work in the area, though, takes place under controlled conditions in labs, often featuring well-off and well-educated Westerners as its subjects.By contrast Alain Cohn of the University of Michigan and his colleagues have taken such behavioral economics around the world, covering 40 countries, 355 cities and more than 17,000 people.
As the team report this week in Science, Dr Cohn’s research assistants entered public buildings. They handed in a wallet to the receptionist, saying they had found it on the street outside. Each wallet contains contact details.Importantly, some wallets also included $13.45, while others not. Then, the team simply waited to see who would return the wallet.
In 38 of the 40 countries, the wallets with money were returned more often than those without (51% vs 40%).In addition, wallets containing a larger sum of money ($94.15) were even more likely (by about another 10%) to be returned than those with less.
With greater temptation (诱惑), then, comes greater honesty — at least when it comes to lost wallets.Interestingly, though, such honesty is not reflected in people’s expectations of others. When surveyed, most of 299 volunteers predicted that the more money in a wallet, the less likely it would be returned.
A certain doubt about the motives of others is probably good for survival. But the warm inner thought of “doing the right thing” is also a powerful motivation. How this altruism developed is much debated — particularly when it extends, as in Dr Cohn’s experiments, to strangers whom the altruist has no expectation of ever meeting.Be that as it may, as this study shows, such altruism is real and universal.
9.How is Alain Cohn’s research different from the previous?( )
A.It covered varied subjects and backgrounds.
B.More scientists participated in the research.
C.It was carried out in controlled situations.
D.It took no account of well-educated Westerners.
10.What can we learn from the research?( )
A.Rate of honesty varies among countries.
B.People prefer returning wallets without money.
C.The less money in a wallet, the higher rate of returning.
D.Wallets with more money are more likely to be given back.
11.What does the underlined word “altruism” in the last paragraph mean?( )
A.Doubt of others’ motivations.
B.Concern for others’ needs.
C.The motivation for survival.
D.Understanding of people’s doubt.
12.What’s the best title for the text?( )
A.Money Answers All Things

These results should serve ...in the short term及其后的one’s ability to return to the relevant skill level and pay grade at a later date,尤其是表示转折的While可知,考虑接受低于自己技能水平的工作虽然可以挣到钱,但会削弱一个人日后恢复到有关技能水平和薪酬等级的能力。
The move was good for me professionally, but I worried about my husband and daughters.I also feared that I wouldn’t be able to give my kids the childhood they deserved.
After I graduated, I knew that I would need a Ph.D.to land the kind of job I was fascinated by.
Anne said,“Thinking about people having cancer is so sad, but I feel better knowing that you are researching it to help.”
But the warm inner thought of “doing the right thing” is also a powerful motivation.

Dear Tom,
How are you? Glad to tell you something about non-cash payments in China.
Non-cash payments are most popular in China. They have made people’s daily lives more and more convenient. Most of us are used to paying by scanning QR codes.By non-cash payments, we can pay easily wherever we go.For example, we can buy breakfast on the street and purchase tickets in the subway station by scanning QR codes. This is a glimpse into the life of most Chinese people — allowing us to bid farewell to the wallet and cash.Non-cash payments have greatly changed people’s lives in China. It seems that China is really leading in some ways and is also sweeping other nations.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.

What’s mine is yours.
We’ve been told since we were toddlers that “It’s good to share”.Parents and teachers keep reminding us to share toys, snacks, books, happy memories, and sometimes even sorrows① with others. When we grow up, we share photos, life stories and opinions with people around us and with those we don’t know via social media. [1]Taking it as an object② of study, psychologists have published various papers③ stating④ that the behaviour of sharing is beneficial to⑤ setting up⑥ positive emotional bonding.
Taking it as an object of study为动词-ing短语作状语;that引导宾语从句。
Today, the action of sharing takes on⑦ extra meaning. It’s not just about sharing sweets or frustration⑧; it has expanded to almost every aspect of our lives — the whole world seems to be into sharing. We are using technology to reduce the money that we spend on goods and services, or to make money out of those that we don’t use ourselves all of the time. These vary from car shares to⑨ home shares, and even to pet shares. The sharing economy is taking off⑩ in all sorts of areas. It is creating new ways of thinking and is providing services to people when and where they want them.
This wealth of ways of sharing is a response to our increasing demand for quality goods and services at competitive prices, [2]all delivered at the click of a button.[3]Whether it’s an online shop where we can hire designer clothes at rock-bottom prices , or a platform from which we can rent out our flats for a couple of days , it’s out there.Whether we’re a lender or a borrower, it’s a win-win situation; everyone makes or saves money. We also make connections and sometimes even make new friends. What’s more, sharing encourages us to reuse items, thereby cutting down on waste. And set-ups such as bike and car sharing do a further favour for the environment by reducing the number of polluting vehicles on the road.
[2]all delivered at the click of a button
[3]句中Whether ...or ...引导状语从句;其中where引导定语从句,先行词为shop;from which we can ...a couple of days为“介词+关系代词”引导的定语从句。
But the sharing economy is not without its problems.[4] As is often the case all over the world with new areas of economic activity, the sharing economy is developing faster than existing regulations or ongoing supervision .Some companies are taking unfair advantage of this situation to expand their share of the market, often at the expense of more traditional and established companies. In addition, the sharing economy is subject to abuse of trust. Some people have experienced damage to their properties whilst renting out their homes, and others have found themselves victims of theft or attack while sharing rides. Finally, personal data, the heart of the sharing economy, is not yet secure .Sharing platforms collect personal information about almost every part of our lives, including our names, locations, bank information, and individual preferences for goods and services.Yet, the technology to prevent such information from leaking or being stolen still needs improvement, and the awareness of potential risks is low among both service providers and users.
Nonetheless , what is in no doubt is that the sharing economy is increasingly relevant to our daily lives as well as to the global economy.[5]It is expanding at such a rate that we can only imagine what it will comprise in the future. What will we be sharing next? Who will be sharing and how? And the most interesting question of all — what type of society will all this sharing take us to?

What’s mine is yours.
We’ve been told since we were toddlers that “It’s good to
share”.Parents and teachers keep reminding us to share toys, snacks,
books, happy memories, and sometimes even sorrows① with
others. When we grow up, we share photos, life stories and opinions
with people around us and with those we don’t know via social media.
[1]Taking it as an object② of study, psychologists have published various
papers③ stating④ that the behaviour of sharing is beneficial to⑤ setting up⑥
positive emotional bonding.
Taking it as an object of study为动词-ing

①sorrow n.
④state v.
⑤be beneficial to 对……

Today, the action of sharing takes on⑦ extra meaning. It’s not just
about sharing sweets or frustration⑧; it has expanded to almost every
aspect of our lives — the whole world seems to be into sharing. We are
using technology to reduce the money that we spend on goods and
services, or to make money out of those that we don’t use ourselves all
of the time. These vary from car shares to⑨ home shares, and even to pet
shares. The sharing economy is taking off⑩ in all sorts of areas. It is
creating new ways of thinking and is providing services to people when
and where they want them.
This wealth of ways of sharing is a response to our increasing
demand for quality goods and services at competitive prices, [2]all
delivered at the click of a button.[3]Whether it’s an online shop
where we can hire designer clothes at rock-bottom prices , or a
platform from which we can rent out our flats for a couple of days ,
it’s out there.Whether we’re a lender or a borrower, it’s a win-win
situation; everyone makes or saves money. We also make connections
and sometimes even make new friends. What’s more, sharing
encourages us to reuse items, thereby cutting down on waste.
And set-ups such as bike and car sharing do a further favour for the
environment by reducing the number of polluting vehicles on the road.
[2]all delivered at the click of a button
[3]句中Whether ...or ...

But the sharing economy is not without its problems.[4] As is often
the case all over the world with new areas of economic activity, the
sharing economy is developing faster than existing regulations or ongoing
supervision .Some companies are taking unfair advantage of this
situation to expand their share of the market, often at the expense of
more traditional and established companies. In addition, the sharing
economy is subject to abuse of trust. Some people have experienced
damage to their properties whilst renting out their homes, and others
have found themselves victims of theft or attack while sharing
rides. Finally, personal data, the heart of the sharing economy,
is not yet secure .Sharing platforms collect personal information about
almost every part of our lives, including our names, locations, bank
information, and individual preferences for goods and services.Yet, the
technology to prevent such information from leaking or being stolen still
needs improvement, and the awareness of potential risks is low among
both service providers and users.
Nonetheless , what is in no doubt is that the sharing economy is
increasingly relevant to our daily lives as well as to the global
economy.[5]It is expanding at such a rate that we can only imagine what
it will comprise in the future. What will we be sharing next? Who will be
sharing and how? And the most interesting question of all — what type of
society will all this sharing take us to?

A
Many often find themselves considering jobs below their skill level in
worsening employment markets. But it turns out that working in a job
below your skill level harms your later chances of getting hired for a better-
paying job more appropriate to your qualifications.
Sociologist David Pedulla at the University of Texas conducted a
study to examine how jobs below a person’s skill level affect future
employability. He tailored 2,420 applications and submitted them to 1,
210 job listings posted in five major cities across the US. He varied the
applications by gender, and also by employment status for the previous
year. Then he used computer models to analyze and compare the
results. The results show that applicants who were positioned as working
below their skill level, regardless of gender had the lowest chances of
getting called for a job interview.
These results should serve as a warning to anyone considering taking a
job below their skill level. While it might pay the bills in the short term, it
can significantly hammer one’s ability to return to the relevant skill level
and pay grade at a later date.
Why might this be the case? Pedulla conducted a follow-up study
with 903 employers. He asked them about their ideas of applicants with
each kind of employment history, and how likely they would be to
recommend each kind of candidate to an interview. The results show that
employers believe that men who are employed in positions below their skill
level are less committed and less competent than men in other employment
situations. Those surveyed also believed that women working below their
skill level were less competent than others, but did not believe them to be
less committed.
The results of studies suggest that work below skill level signals to
employers men’s incompetence and a lack of commitment. This is a
disturbing reminder that the sword of gender bias (偏见) does in fact cut
both ways.

The sun was rising as we drove across the Minnesota state line to New
York for my new Ph.D. program. The move was good for me
professionally, but I worried about my husband and daughters.I also
feared that I wouldn’t be able to give my kids the childhood they
deserved.
Anne, our first daughter, who is brilliant, came into the world
when I was a junior majoring in biology in college. It was challenging to
balance classes, work schedules, and being a mom.But I got through it
and persuaded myself, finding moments of joy along the way.On the
nights when I was home, I’d read my class notes out loud with my
daughter. She’d respond by asking impressive questions, such as
“Mom, what are bacteria?” It helped us both learn.
After I graduated, I knew that I would need a Ph.D. to land the kind
of job I was fascinated by.I arrived in New York feeling more than the
usual new-grad-student anxiety.I also suffered from a more personal fear
that I was being selfish — that my decision to invigorate my career was
going to have long-term negative impacts on my kids.
Over the past year, though, I’ve started to let go of some of this
worry.I’ve realized that we have not only adapted to our new situation,
but things are getting better. My husband landed a job that he is happy
with.Anne dreams of becoming a marine biologist.Recently, while
driving past the cancer institution I work at, Anne said, “Thinking
about people having cancer is so sad, but I feel better knowing that you
are researching it to help.”
Navigating academia as a young mother is hard, but it’s also
rewarding. My kids are learning to look at the world through the lens of
science, and watching their mom succeed inspires them.I look forward to
seeing them follow my footsteps, whatever path they choose.

A. Boost. B. Change.
C. Create. D. Choose.

7. What could be inferred from Anne’s words in Paragraph 4?( )
A. People are afraid of having cancer.
B. Cancer is health enemy No.1.

Imagine you found a wallet containing a stranger’s contact details
but no cash.Would you return it to its owner? Now imagine the same
wallet contained a few banknotes.Would that change your response?
Does it depend on the amount of money? And how do you think other
people would react?
Honesty makes the world go round.Without people trusting in one
another, society would fall apart.Honesty is therefore studied
academically. Most work in the area, though, takes place under
controlled conditions in labs, often featuring well-off and well-educated
Westerners as its subjects.By contrast Alain Cohn of the University of
Michigan and his colleagues have taken such behavioral economics around
the world, covering 40 countries, 355 cities and more than 17,000
people.
As the team report this week in Science, Dr Cohn’s research
assistants entered public buildings. They handed in a wallet to the
receptionist, saying they had found it on the street outside. Each wallet
contains contact details.Importantly, some wallets also included
$13.45, while others not. Then, the team simply waited to see who
would return the wallet.
In 38 of the 40 countries, the wallets with money were returned
more often than those without (51% vs 40%).In addition, wallets
containing a larger sum of money ($94.15) were even more likely (by
about another 10%) to be returned than those with less.
With greater temptation (诱惑), then, comes greater honesty —
at least when it comes to lost wallets.Interestingly, though, such
honesty is not reflected in people’s expectations of others. When
surveyed, most of 299 volunteers predicted that the more money in a
wallet, the less likely it would be returned.
A certain doubt about the motives of others is probably good for
survival. But the warm inner thought of “doing the right thing” is also a
powerful motivation. How this altruism developed is much debated —
particularly when it extends, as in Dr Cohn’s experiments, to
strangers whom the altruist has no expectation of ever meeting.Be that as it
may, as this study shows, such altruism is real and universal.

9. How is Alain Cohn’s research different from the previous?( )
A. It covered varied subjects and backgrounds.
B. More scientists participated in the research.
C. It was carried out in controlled situations.
D. It took no account of well-educated Westerners.

10. What can we learn from the research?( )
A. Rate of honesty varies among countries.
B. People prefer returning wallets without money.
C. The less money in a wallet, the higher rate of returning.

C. The motivation for survival.
D. Understanding of people’s doubt.
But the warm inner
thought of “doing the right thing” is also a powerful motivation.
12. What’s the best title for the text?( )
A. Money Answers All Things
B. Money Makes the Mare Go
C. Honesty Is Questioned in Face of Money
D. Money Doesn’t Make the World Go Round

Dear Tom,
How are you? Glad to tell you something about non-cash payments
in China.

people’s daily lives more and more convenient. Most of us are used to
paying by scanning QR codes.By non-cash payments, we can pay easily
wherever we go.For example, we can buy breakfast on the street and
purchase tickets in the subway station by scanning QR codes. This is a
glimpse into the life of most Chinese people — allowing us to bid farewell
to the wallet and cash.Non-cash payments have greatly changed people’s
lives in China. It seems that China is really leading in some ways and is
also sweeping other nations.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
Yours,
Li Hua
