The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, or UNESCO, meets each year to choose the latest additions to its World Heritage List. Here, we look at some of the recent additions:
Churches of the Pskov School of Architecture (Russia)
A group of ancient structures in the city of Pskov make up Russia's newest UNESCO World Heritage Site. The structures, many of which are churches, all were designed by the Pskov School of Architecture. It was a leading school of building design in the country, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some elements common to Pskov architecture date back to the 11th century.
Writing on Stone (Canada)
Canada's Writing on Stone monument, known also as Aisinai'pi, has a large number of protected rock paintings and rock carvings. Some of them are 2000 years old. The markings were left by Blackfoot Native Americans who lived in parts of Western Canada and the far northern United States. The land that makes up Writing on Stone is filled with rock columns that have been formed by erosion (侵蚀) into “spectacular shapes”.
Babylon (Iraq)
The ancient city of Babylon is gaining World Heritage Site status. The city was once a main tourist site before Iraq suffered several wars. The 4,300 year old Babylon is where dynasties have risen and fallen since the earliest days of settled human civilization. UNESCO says the site “offers a look into one of the most influential empires of the ancient world”.
Paraty and Ilha Grande (Brazil)
The historic coastal town of Paraty and the island Ilha Grande are already popular places for visitors to Brazil's Rio de Janeiro state. Now, they make up a newly named UNESCO site. Paraty was the final stop along the Gold Route, along which gold was shipped to Europe in the 1600s. The area is also home to a huge number of animals, some of which are threatened.

You might think of martial arts movies when you see people performing graceful moves down the river, all standing on a bamboo strip, but actually it is a form of intangible cultural heritage: bamboo drifting.
Over 2,000 years ago, the high quality wood, nanmu, in Guizhou was in great demand by the royal court more than 2,000 kilometers to the north. With no better transportation, people had to stand on one log to drift down the river. Later, local people began to compete along the way and the game of wood drifting was born. In the Qing Dynasty, wood drifting became bamboo drifting because of bamboo's lower price. Due to the skills it takes for one to master this act, bamboo drifting was included in the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Yang Liu, a 24 year old inheritor of bamboo drifting, learned it at 7.“Usually, the bamboo under your feet is about 9 meters long, and the bamboo in your hands is about 5 meters. If the length or diameter of the bamboo is not long enough, it will not float. Keeping our feet firmly positioned on the narrow bamboo pole is the key, so we should fight against the current by constantly changing the angle. I lost my balance and fell in the water many times while practicing. Once I fell, I gave it another try until I knew how to handle the most difficult part,” she said.
The love for the ancient skill keeps Yang going. In the past 17 years, she has drifted all year round, in winter cold and summer heat. As hanfu culture has been on the rise, Yang started wearing hanfu while performing, creating a more beautiful feel. In 2020,Yang began to post her videos on social media. “I'm extremely proud to get responses from viewers that bamboo drifting makes the line between what is possible and impossible unclear. It's my mission to keep it alive and known to more people,” Yang Liu told China Daily.

Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3 D digital libraries. Across 163 different countries, 1,000 natural and cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO calls World Heritage Sites.
We lose a little of that heritage every day. War, climate change and pollution have a bad effect, as do wind and rain. The D|S4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever. Now there's a better choice. New digital conservation technologies let us hold on to them, at least virtually, through 3 D scanning, modeling and digital storage. Such projects can be accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industry and non profit organizations.
To make a 3 D model, a laser scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping (重叠的) images from all possible angles. A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines from one point to another to create a wire frame model. High resolution digital cameras add color and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.
These scans do more than preserve a memory in a database. With highly accurate measurements, archaeologists can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering tricks. School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see. And when a site is destroyed, the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened for one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda. Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3 D models made in 2009. More than 100 World Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3 D models, and conservationists are racing to record as many more as possible.
8.How does the author show the necessity for 3 D digital libraries in the first two paragraphs
A.By listing the threats to our human heritage.
B.By introducing some damaged historical sites.
C.By quoting some experts' views on heritage protection.
D.By explaining UNESCO's research on World Heritage Sites.
9.What can be inferred from paragraph 3
A.The function of a laser scanner is to add color and texture to the image.
B.The reflection of light off an object is recorded in a computer.
C.The process of making a 3 D model is carried out with the help of a laser scanner.
D.High resolution digital cameras make the models viewable, printable, and operable.
10.What do we know about the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda
A.It is metal framed.
B.It is still in its original condition.
C.It was once destroyed in an earthquake.
D.It was reconstructed thanks to 3 D models.
11.What does the author intend to say through this text
A.Never ignore the destructive power of war.
B.Take action to reduce pollution in historic places.
C.Take advantage of 3 D technology to keep history.
D.Invest more money to preserve World Heritage Sites.

Over the past 5,000 years, China has given birth to a large number of cultural heritages. Among these are the beautiful porcelain wares (瓷器) produced in Jingdezhen in East China's Jiangxi Province. Here we explore their development and importance in today's society.
Jingdezhen is well known around the world for its porcelain. It has produced porcelain since the Five Dynasties (907-960). Jingdezhen is known as the “porcelain capital” for its different kinds of porcelain wares with rich and cool styles. Of all the products, blue and white porcelain is the most famous. Such unique porcelains with the fine style have been praised as “the Treasure of China”.
Starting in the Song Dynasty (960-1279), kiln (窑) appeared in every household in every village in Jingdezhen, which was key to the establishment of its porcelain tradition.
During the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), a new technique for blue and white porcelain was invented. During the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1912) Dynasties, techniques for mining, painting, and firing were advanced, bringing Jingdezhen's porcelain craftsmanship (工艺) to a historic high. At that time, the establishment of the Zhushan Imperial Kiln and the growing porcelain market overseas accelerated the development of the industry, turning Jingdezhen into a major porcelain production center.
The Republic of China (1912-1949) saw the growth of porcelain industry as well as a rise in shops and traders, which helped increase ties between Jingdezhen and other areas in China and other countries. After the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, the porcelain industry saw its development at high speed.
However, with the economic growth and the use of new technology over the last decades, the traditional porcelain production worsens. Although some traditional techniques have been preserved, a large part of them were lost. In 2006, Jingdezhen porcelain craftsmanship was listed as a national cultural heritage.
12.Why is the blue and white porcelain regarded as “the Treasure of China”?
A.For its producer. B.For its timing.
C.For its weight. D.For its style.
13.When did Jingdezhen's porcelain craftsmanship reach a record high
A.In the Five Dynasties.
B.In the Song Dynasty.
C.In the Yuan Dynasty.
D.In the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
14.What does the underlined word “accelerated” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Missed out. B.Held back.
C.Sped up. D.Mixed with.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A.The Importance of Porcelain
B.The Porcelain in Jingdezhen
C.The Rise of Porcelain Industry
D.The Economic Growth in China

Little Tom was a student in senior high school. He was not good at his work and failed many times in the exams, and he never knew why he couldn't catch up with others.
One day, Tom and his teacher were walking through the forest. He was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest. He asked his teacher, “Why most people's minds are restless, and only a few have a calm mind What can one do to calm the mind down?”
The teacher looked at Tom, smiled and told him a story:
On one beautiful day, an elephant was standing by the shade of a tree, eating its leaves. Suddenly, a small fly came buzzingly and landed on the elephant's ear. The elephant stayed calm and continued eating, ignoring the fly. The fly flew around the elephant's ear, buzzing noisily, yet the elephant seemed to be unaffected. This confused the fly, and it asked, “Are you deaf?”
“No!” the elephant answered.
“Why aren't you bothered by my buzz?” the fly asked.
“Why are you so restless and noisy Why can't you stay calm just for a few moments?” asked the elephant, and peacefully continued eating the leaves.
The fly answered, “Everything I see, hear and feel attracts my attention, and all noises and movements around me affect my behavior.”
“What is your secret How can you stay so calm and still, while I am buzzing around your ears?”
“I can continue eating peacefully, because my five senses do not disturb my peace.”
“How is it possible?” asked the fly amazed and confused.
“Because I don't let them rule my attention,” answered the elephant.
“I am in control of my mind and my thoughts, and therefore, I can direct my attention where I want, and ignore any disturbance including your buzz.”
“And therefore,” continued the elephant, “I am completely lost in the act of eating, enjoying my food and chewing it peacefully.”

第二节 参考范文:
After listening to the story, Tom's eyes opened wide and smiled. He looked at his teacher and said, “I now understand! When I am doing something, I am always not paying attention and I am easily disturbed by the things around me. So my mind is always in constant unrest. If I focus my attention on the things that I am doing, I will not care about whatever happens in the world around me and I will control my five senses and control my mind.” “Yes, that's right,” the teacher answered.
From that day on, he paid his attention to whatever he was doing. In class, his attention was completely fixed on what the teacher was saying, and he didn't talk with his deskmate any more, which made his deskmate amazed. When he was doing his homework, no matter what was going on outside, he was not affected. His parents were surprised at his change and asked what had happened to him. He told the story about the fly and the elephant to them. Because of his efforts, he made great progress in the final examination.
