Tracee Herbaugh lives in the Boston area of Massachusetts. She thought she was alone in her backyard recently when she used the Merlin Bird ID app. She learned by listening that she was surrounded by more than 12 kinds of birds.
Two birds identified by the app, veery (画眉鸟) and great homed owl, even had a red dot next to their names. The red dot means it is an unusual sighting. Herbaugh wrote, “Who knew these birds could be in one yard?”
Cornell Lab of Omithology is the maker of Merlin Bird ID. The app was released in 2014. At first, the app only identified birds by their photos through Photo ID. Then we answered a series of questions about the photo to help identify the bird, such as date, area, color, and size. The app became popular when people increasingly wanted to be outdoors.
In 2021, Cornell Lab added Sound ID to identify birds by their sound. In the United States alone, Merlin's Sound ID can identify over 700 kinds of birds. More than 7 million people now use the Merlin Bird ID worldwide.
Alli Smith works on the Merlin project at Cornell Lab. Smith said bird watching by sound “opens up a whole new world”.“Even if you cannot see the birds,” he added, “you can hear their beautiful songs and know they're sharing your neighborhood.”
More than birds, Herbaugh said the app also helped her reconnect with people across the country. When Herbaugh shared her bird list on social media, two childhood friends who also used the app messaged her about it. Her relative in Montana shared a list of birds. And even her young children now quickly go for the app when they hear an unfamiliar bird call.
Herbaugh has identified 45 birds on her list so far. She said now her children are the ones driving her to get more on the bird list.

The way you use your cellphones around your family can have an effect on your relationships. Cellphones can make you feel more connected, but they can also distract (使分心) you and your family from connecting with each other in person. While some people need to check their phones for work or emergency (紧急情况) purposes, it's important to make meaningful connections through face to face communication.
Some people have trouble putting away their cellphones. They might feel they can't control how often they pick up their phones or how long they use them. They might feel the need to often check phones without a real reason or feel upset if they don't have an opportunity to use their phones. Using cellphones for work purposes during family time can increase worries and unhappiness among family members. While using their cellphones, parents talk to their kids less, reply more slowly, and overreact to being interrupted. And ignoring their partner while on the phone is linked to lower relationship satisfaction among couples.
Once you've given some thought to your own cellphone use, think about the rules you want your family to follow when you're together. To get your family on the same page, call a family meeting. Review each person's current cellphone use and areas where you think some changes might help. It's not just about simply cutting cellphone use down. Instead, consider what you're using your phone for and what activities you want to carry out.
For example, are you or your children using phones to stay connected, learn something new, do school work, or do something else If you have kids, ask their opinions on your own phone use. You might be surprised by what they have to share. Use good communication skills by practicing active listening and showing curiosity about what each family member has to say.
Less phone use also usually means less screen time, which enables kids to spend more time outdoors and be more physically active. When teens spend more time actively with their parents, they tend to set higher educational goals.
8.What's the first paragraph mainly about
A.Family members' connections.
B.Cellphones' new challenges at home.
C.One disadvantage of the cellphones.
D.People's staying away from cellphones.
9.How do some people feel when they have no phone at hand
A.Uneasy. B.Uncertain.
C.Curious. D.Homesick.
10.Why should a family meeting be held
A.To carry out activities.
B.To reach an agreement.
C.To share the latest news.
D.To set an example to others.
11.What can be the best title for the text
A.Are Cellphones Influencing Family Time
B.Are Mobile Phones Changing People's Life
C.How Can People Get Along with Their Parents
D.How Do Children Set Right Educational Goals

For many kids, the Internet is at their fingertips. From computers to smartphones, a web of information is open to them. According to a new report from the Pew Research Center, about three out of four kids aged 12 to 13 connect the Internet using a mobile device from time to time. Many younger kids are online, too.
Julian Zeitlinger, 9, from New Jersey, uses his computer to watch videos and play games. To keep him safe online, his parents monitor (监测) his web use and discuss Internet safety with him. “I ask my parents if something is wrong,” Julian says.
Mobile devices offer more ways than ever to share personal information. The information can be dangerous in the wrong hands. A study found that 62% of children aged 8 to 17 have had an unpleasant online experience.
Have you ever had to enter a parent's email address when signing up for a website That safety net is there because of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The law says sites for kids under 13 cannot collect personal information, such as a phone number or full name, without a parent's permission.
This July, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) will update COPPA for the first time since the law was created in 1998 — when there were no smartphones. “The nature of the way kids get online has changed,” FTC lawyer Phyllis Marcus said.
When the changes take effect, COPPA will apply to (适用于) mobile devices and newer forms of advertising. It will expand what falls under “personal information” to include videos, photographs and services that give users' location.
COPPA doesn't cover everything that can go wrong online. That's why kids and parents need to know what to look out for and to stop and think before sharing information online.
“There is a misunderstanding that if a site is following COPPA, it is totally safe,” says privacy expert Shai Samet. He runs kidSAFE, which checks whether a site meets kidSAFE standards and is safe. “It's important that kids know how useful the Internet is but that it also can be dangerous if you are not careful,” he adds.

Usually, hackers insert pieces of code into valid files and program. And then, you might receive a file from a trusted sender whose mail has been __31__. You should take the time to check your “Task Manager” to get a sense of what __32__ are running. Check anything suspicious that's __33__ in the background. That's often the sign of malware.
Other things to __34__ for include random device or Internet slowdown; the software you don't recognize; inability to access your account or unscheduled shutdowns and restarts.

It was Christmas morning. Mark received a gift from his grandma. “It must be the video game she promised!” Mark thought. However, when he opened the gift, he discovered it was a red thick woolen sweater, which was a bit too big for him. And its sleeves (袖子) weren't even the same size.
Then Mark said, “I hate the ugly sweater.” “You shouldn't say that!” his mom explained. “Do you know ...” Suddenly, the phone rang and Mark's mom went to pick it up. It was Mark's grandma, and she wanted to speak to Mark.
“Hi, Grandma,” Mark said. “Do you like the sweater I chose red because I thought it would look lovely on you,” his grandma said. “Honestly, it looks terrible,” Mark replied and hung up the phone. His grandma was so sad and cried after hearing Mark's hurtful comments.
Little did Mark know the sweater's real value. His grandma had knitted (编织) the sweater by hand though she was legally blind. She had created the sweater by love rather than sight. This year, Mark's parents were unable to travel to Philadelphia to meet his grandma for the holidays, so she decided to send a gift to Mark because she was missing him terribly.
Days later, Mark's parents planned a short ski trip. Before leaving home, Mark's mom forced Mark to wear the sweater because it was cold that day. Due to the heavy snow, Mark's father drove slowly. When they finally reached their destination, it was late in the evening. Unable to ski that day, Mark wanted at least to go and look around. His mom asked him not to go too far. Mark nodded and raced off to a nearby place.
However, when Mark was playing, he accidentally fell, injured his head, and was unconscious (昏迷的). Later, finding Mark missing, his parents were worried and looked for him. “Mark, come back now!” they shouted, but there was no reply. They asked a few passers by whether they had seen a child, but no one knew anything.
Then they called the police and reached out to the hotel workers.

“Boy, the sweater saved your life. It kept the majority of your body warm,” the doctor said.

根据第三段中“At first, the app only identified birds by their photos through Photo ID.”
根据第六段“More than birds, Herbaugh said the app also helped her ... the country.”
通读全文,结合第四段“In 2021, Cornell Lab added Sound ID to ... Merlin Bird ID worldwide.”和第五段“Alli Smith works on the ... hear their beautiful songs and know they're sharing your neighborhood.” 故选A项。
[C]
根据第一段中的“... but they can also distract ... with each other in person.”

22.选A 根据下文“A __________ attack involves a cyber criminal sending out thousands or even millions of links and flies.” 故选A。
23.选B 根据下文“attack involves a cyber criminal sending out thousands or even millions of links and flies”可知,此处讲述了一个非常典型的网络攻击。historic “与历史有关的”;typical “典型的”;potential “潜在的”;specific “明确的”。故选B。
24.选D 根据下文“Somebody always does.” halfway“在中途”;originally “起初”;periodically “周期性地”;eventually “最终”。故选D。
25.选D 根据下文“as well as how to prevent them from happening in the first place”可推断,学会如何识别(recognize)网络攻击,防患于未然。故选D。
fearless “无所畏惧的”;soundless “无声的”;clueless “(对某事)不懂的”;careless “粗心大意的”。故选C。

stop doing sth.
