If you want to tell the history of the whole world, a history that does not privilege one part of humanity, you cannot do it through texts alone, because only some of the world has ever had texts, while most of the world, for most of the time, has not. Writing is one of humanity's later achievements, and until fairly recently even many literate (有文字的) societies recorded their concerns not only in writing but in things.
Ideally a history would bring together texts and objects, and some chapters of this book are able to do just that, but in many cases we simply can't. The clearest example of this between literate and non literate history is perhaps the first conflict, at Botany Bay, between Captain Cook's voyage and the Australian Aboriginals. From the English side, we have scientific reports and the captain's record of that terrible day. From the Australian side, we have only a wooden shield (盾) dropped by a man in flight after his first experience of gunshot. If we want to reconstruct what was actually going on that day,the shield must be questioned and interpreted as deeply and strictly as the written reports.
In addition to the problem of miscomprehension from both sides, there are victories accidentally or deliberately twisted, especially when only the victors know how to write. Those who are on the losing side often have only their things to tell their stories. The Caribbean Taino, the Australian Aboriginals, the African people of Benin and the Incas, all of whom appear in this book, can speak to us now of their past achievements most powerfully through the objects they made:a history told through things gives them back a voice. When we consider contact (联系) between literate and non literate societies such as these, all our first hand accounts are necessarily twisted, only one half of a dialogue. If we are to find the other half of that conversation,_we have to read not just the texts, but the objects.
4.What is the first paragraph mainly about
A.How past events should be presented.
B.What humanity is concerned about.
C.Whether facts speak louder than words.
D.Why written language is reliable.
5.What does the author indicate by mentioning Captain Cook in paragraph 2
A.His report was scientific.

D.His record was one sided.
6.What does the underlined word “conversation” in paragraph 3 refer to
A.Problem. B.History.

C.A History of the World in 100 Objects

In the not too distant future, driverless cars will drive our streets. These cars will need to make quick decisions to avoid endangering human lives — both inside and outside of the cars.
To determine attitudes toward these decisions, a group of researchers created a modern version of the classic exercise known as “the Trolley problem”. They raised a series of moral dilemmas (道德困境) involving a self driving car with brakes (刹车) that suddenly give out. Should the car change direction to avoid a group of passers by, killing the driver Or should it kill the people on foot but spare the driver Does it matter if the passers by are men or women Children or older people Doctors or murderers
To put these questions to a large range of people, the researchers built a website called Moral Machine, where anyone could click through the situations and say what the car should do “Help us learn how to make machines moral,” a video asks on the site.
What the researchers found was a series of near universal preferences, no matter where someone was from. People everywhere believed the moral thing for the car to do was to spare the young over the old, spare humans over animals, and spare the lives of many over the few. The findings were published Wednesday in the journal.
Researchers found that the 130 countries with more than 100 respondents (调查对象) could be grouped into three groups that showed similar moral preferences. And these preferences seemed to be connected with social differences. Respondents from collectivistic cultures, which “value the respect for older members of the community,” showed a weaker preference for sparing younger people.
The researchers noted that the study's results should be used with extreme carefulness and they shouldn't be considered the final word on societal preferences — especially since these respondents were much fewer than they had expected.
8.What give(s) rise to the questions in paragraph 2
A.The researchers' attitudes.
B.The driver's hard decision.
C.The self driving car's power cut.
D.The driverless car's brake failure.
9.What might affect respondents' moral preferences
A.Their living habits.
B.Their family members.
C.Their cultural background.
D.Their educational background.
10.What is the major limitation of the research
A.The difficult questions.
B.The limited questions.
C.The small number of respondents.
D.The careless respondents.
11.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A.The New Self driving Cars
B.The New “Trolley Problem”
C.Should Car Drivers Be Moral
D.Does Moral Preference Matter

The Amazon basin region is home to about 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and some 2,000 birds and mammals. To date, at least 40,000 plant species, 3,000 fish, 1,294 birds, 427 mammals, 428 amphibians, and 378 reptiles have been scientifically classified in the region. One in five of all the birds in the world live in the Amazon rainforest.
The warm and wet forest has been in existence for at least 55 million years, and thrived even during glacial periods, allowing for the evolution of an unbelievable diversity of species. Radiocarbon dating (放射性碳定年法)has revealed trees of 10 centimeter in diameter to be more than 300 years old, and some trees over 1,000 years old, indicating that untouched forests can experience unbelievable longevity.
The first human inhabitants are thought to have settled in the Amazon region about 11,200 years ago. European explorers arrived in the 16th century, bringing diseases which traveled faster than the explorers themselves, killing perhaps as many as 90% of the indigenous inhabitants (土著居民).By the late 17th century the Amazon basin was controlled by Portuguese and Spanish explorers.
The Amazon rainforest has been described as the lungs of our planet because of its important role in recycling carbon dioxide into oxygen. But due to deforestation (滥伐森林), rainforests now cover less than 5% of the Earth's land surface, and experts believe that this is a big contributor to global climate change. Severe deforestation began in the 20th century, with 587,000 square kilometers lost up to the year 2000. Most deforested land is used for grassland to raise farm animals and agriculture. The addition of transport routes has led to increased settlement and deforestation, and at the present rate, scientists estimate that the Amazon rainforest will be reduced by 40% in two decades.
12.Why are the figures mentioned in paragraph 1
A.To prove the forest untouched.
B.To classify species scientifically.
C.To show the diversity of species.
D.To attract more attention to the Amazon region.
13.Why did most indigenous inhabitants in the Amazon region die
A.European explorers brought diseases there.
B.Portuguese explorers treated them badly.
C.A lot of trees were cut down and burned.
D.They got killed by Spanish explorers.
14.What can be inferred about the Amazon rainforest
A.It has the largest number of species.
B.It covers over 5% of South America.
C.It is becoming larger in area.
D.It is being endangered now.
15.What may be included in the following paragraph
A.Examples of destroying forests.
B.Measures to protect rainforests.
C.New settlements in the Amazon region.
D.Ways to stop global warming.

·Trees produce oxygen
__17__.A leafy tree produces as much oxygen in a season as 10 people inhale (吸入) in a year. What many people don't realize is that the forest also acts as a giant filter (过滤) that cleans the air we breathe.Trees help clean the air by preventing airborne particles, reducing heat, and absorbing such pollutants.
·Trees clean the soil
The term phytoremediation (植物修复) is a fancy word for the absorption of dangerous chemicals and other pollutants that have entered the soil. __18__.Trees filter sewage and farm chemicals, reduce the effects of animal wastes, clean roadside spills and so on.
·Trees are carbon sinks
To produce its food, a tree absorbs and locks away carbon dioxide in the wood, roots and leaves.Carbon dioxide is a global warming suspect. __19__.This locking up process “stores” carbon as wood and not as a “greenhouse” gas.
·__20__
Trees block urban noise almost as effectively as stone walls.Trees, planted at strategic points in a neighborhood or around your house, can reduce major noises from freeways and airports.
A.Trees help clean the sky
B.Trees control noise pollution
C.We could not exist as we do if there were no trees
D.Man has been planting trees to make the planet a more beautiful world
E.A forest is a carbon storage area that can lock up as much carbon as it produces

When a tornado (龙卷风) touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined.Afterwards all the local newspapers carried many human interest stories (有人情味的故事) featuring some of the families who suffered the hardest.
One Sunday,a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely shabby mobile home, a depressed expression on her face. A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downward.Clutching (抓紧) her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear.
The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest,I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I stuck the picture of the young family on our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven year old twins,Brad and Brett, and to three year old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We'll share what we have with them.” I brought three large boxes down from the room upstairs and placed them on the living room floor.Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned foods and goods.
While I sorted through our clothes, I encouraged the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys piled up old toys and games.
Meghan walked up with Lucy, her worn, much loved rag doll hugged tightly to her chest. She came to the box that held the toys, pressed her round little face into Lucy's flat and painted face, gave her a final kiss and then laid her gently on the top of the other toys.
“Oh,honey,” I said,“You don't have to give Lucy.You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously, eyes filled with held back tears,“Lucy makes me happy,Mommy. Maybe she'll make that little girl happy, too.”
The boys watched, open mouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.

I looked at my children for a long moment.

19.选E 根据空前的“locks away carbon dioxide”和空后的“This locking up process ‘stores’ carbon”可知,E项符合语境。

hear about“听说”。

The boys watched, open mouthed, as their baby sister placed her favorite doll in the box.Without a word, Brad rose and went to his room. He came back carrying one of his favorite action figures. He hesitated briefly, clutching the toy, then looked over at Meghan and placed it in the box next to Lucy. A slow smile spread across Brett's face. Then he jumped up eyes twinkling as he ran to fetch some of his prized Matchbox cars. I think all of them want to make these poor people who have nothing happy like them.Swallowing back tears I pulled all three of them into my arms.
I looked at my children for a long moment. Astonished,I realized that the boys had also recognized what little Meghan's gesture meant. Taking the cue from my little one, I removed my old jacket from the box of clothes. I replaced it with the new hunter green jacket that I had found on sale last week. I hoped the young woman in the picture would love it as much as I did. What Meghan did taught me a lesson that the true spirit of donating is to give with your heart.
