A
Begus is a linguist at the University of California, Berkeley. He got the chance, last summer, to observe sperm whales in their wild Caribbean habitat. With him were marine (海洋的) biologists and roboticists. There were also cryptographers and experts in other fields. All have been working together to listen to sperm whales and figure out what they might be saying.
They call this Project CETI. Project CETI's team is not the only group turning to AI for help decoding animal talk. Researchers have trained AI models to sort through the sounds of prairie dogs, dolphins, naked mole rats and many other creatures.
Long before AI came into the picture, scientists and others have worked toward understanding animal communication. Some learned that vervet monkeys have different calls when warning of leopards, eagles or pythons. Others discovered that elephants communicate in rumbles too low for human ears to hear. Bats chatter in squeaks too high for our hearing. Still other groups have explored how bees communicate through dance.
“It took us a long time to measure all these things,” says researcher Karen Bakker. AI, she notes, has the potential to greatly speed up this type of research. Perhaps one day we'll be able to use AI to build a futuristic chat box that translates animal sounds into human language, or vice versa (反之亦然).
“AI could eventually get us to the point where we understand animals,”says Bakker. What's interesting to her is what we can learn from how bats and other creatures talk among each other. We should listen to animals for better protection, she argues. For example, a system set up to record whales or elephants can also track their locations. This can help us avoid whales with our boats or prevent elephants from illegal hunters.

While facial recognition technology continues to promote many aspects of human life, it's now being applied to aid the protection of giant pandas, Xinhua News Agency reported on 6 January.
A nature reserve has built an AI-enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas. Installed with 300 infrared (红外线) cameras, the monitoring system helps ensure the health and safety of 110 wild giant pandas there. It was put into operation two years ago, and has captured numerous photos and videos of pandas engaged in activities such as eating, resting and fighting for mates. It provides scientific data to help us grasp pandas' living conditions and establish conservation strategies. More importantly, it achieves real-time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife as early as possible.
A recent study found the facial recognition system can automatically recognize various wild animals caught in infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It's shown that by equipping the AI-aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, we obtain a 98% success rate for species recognition. Its success rate of recognizing other wild animals can top 80%. In 2021 alone, this monitoring system captured 2,896 photos of giant pandas and other rare animals and filmed 3,218 seconds of footage, showcasing the reserve's sound ecological environment as well as a gradual rise in panda population there.
Head of the reserve's administration, Liu Xingming, said researchers used the system not only to observe the dynamics and health of the giant panda population but also to learn about changes in the natural surroundings of their habitat. “The monitoring system has enabled systematic, scientific, and intelligent conservation of wildlife,” he added. “However, it is expected to be further improved and optimized in the near future.”

Ways to Help the Troubled Monarch Butterflies
The monarch butterfly (帝王蝶) is considered an endangered species. Scientists say the dropping number of monarchs is due to climate change, loss of living places and the use of pesticides — chemicals that kill insects — and herbicides — chemicals that kill plants. 9
One of the quickest and best ways to help is to plant milkweed on your land. Milkweed is a kind of plant that has white juice. Monarch butterflies eat milkweed and lay their eggs there. 10 However, not all milkweed is the same. It is important to choose the right kind of milkweed. Planting tropical milkweed in the United States is a problem because it is not native to the country. It blooms or flowers for longer periods of time. This can make it harder for monarchs to know when it is time to migrate (迁徙).
Other plants, especially those with flowers that have honey, can be helpful to adult monarchs. These plants can be good-quality food for the butterflies. 11 Invasive plants can do more harm than good to monarchs. It is a good idea to include plants that flower late in the growing season. These plants can help give monarchs the energy they need for their yearly migration in autumn.
12 Chemicals can harm insects, including monarchs. They can also harm birds. Natural or organic poisons may also be harmful. Use them after dark, when butterflies are not as active. When the morning arrives, the product will be dry and not as effective. The butterflies will be safe.
Another way to help monarchs is to create a butterfly water feeding area. Add water to sand in a sunny area. 13 Butterflies can rest on the stone, take in the sun and drink the water from the pool. And you can sit and enjoy the beautiful monarchs.
A.They need milkweed to survive.
B.Find an appropriate place for milkweed.
C.Set a flat rock in the middle of the area.
D.You can grow your own ones from seeds.
E.Be sure to choose plants that are native to your area.
F.Next, think about the chemicals you use in your own garden.
G.But there are things that people can do to help the beloved black-and-orange insects.
语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了导致帝王蝶数量减少的原因以及改进措施。

A nature reserve has built an AI enabled video monitoring system to better protect giant pandas. More importantly, it achieves real time monitoring of the reserve so that we can discern the threats to the wildlife as early as possible.
A recent study found the facial recognition system can automatically recognize various wild animals caught in infrared cameras, allowing researchers to collect data on giant pandas while staying indoors. It's shown that by equipping the AI aided system to retain the filed photos of giant pandas, we obtain a 98% success rate for species recognition.

One of the quickest and best ways to help is to plant milkweed on your land. Milkweed is a kind of plant that has white juice. Monarch butterflies eat milkweed and lay their eggs there. __10__ However, not all milkweed is the same.
These plants can be good quality food for the butterflies. __11__ Invasive plants can do more harm than good to monarchs. It is a good idea to include plants that flower late in the growing season. These plants can help give monarchs the energy they need for their yearly migration in autumn.
__12__ Chemicals can harm insects, including monarchs.
__13__ Butterflies can rest on the stone, take in the sun and drink the water from the pool.
G.But there are things that people can do to help the beloved black and orange insects.
