In my first college poetry class, we were supposed to write poems. My efforts satisfied neither me nor the professor.I recall one poem about the rushing sounds of cars in rain.
After the last term, I picked up my work at the professor's office and asked, my knees shaking, “Do I have any talent?” I'd earned a “B” — even though I did every task and missed no classes. He was a kind person.“Probably not,” he said softly, looking down.“Thank you.” I said, and walked back to my dorm.I felt like a grafted (嫁接的) apple tree: part of me disappointed; another part defiant.
The defiant part led me to another poetry class the following year. This time, students drove the discussion and we read contemporary poems. I earned an “A”.Many years later, the professor told me that every student who did the work earned an “A”.His approach was as encouraging as the first instructor's was discouraging, but from that discouragement, I learned that teachers don't hold the keys to their students' talent.
I believe that every human being is born with talent for making art: visual, literary or musical. Some lucky souls are born with many talents. But no one can predict if or when talent might develop into art that others recognize as good.Artists must have enough ego (自信) to make art and enough modesty to improve it.They must be open to change. They must be their own toughest critics (批评者), and be able to absorb the criticism.
I've been teaching creative writing for more than 30 years now.Students sometimes ask me, “Do I have talent?” I tell them my story, and I repeated Joyce Carol Oates' words, “There is only the work.”And then I say, “Of course you have talent, but you must not need praise.Make art regardless of whether anyone approves — or even notices.”

A master of words, a literary genius and a philosopher, Russian author Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) is known by many as the greatest writer of all time.Even today, over 110 years after his death, his two greatest masterpieces, War and Peace and Anna Karenina, continue to be widely read, appreciated and highly influential.
“If the world could write by itself, it would write like Tolstoy,” the Russian author Isaak Babel once said.Tolstoy's realistic fiction is famous for its powers of observation and ability to mine the depths of human consciousness, such as the psychological exploration of a married woman in Anna Karenina. In War and Peace, Tolstoy also describes Russia's national soul and expresses public unity through his many characters. His characters feel alive; they grow, they change and they stick in the minds of readers long after the final page is turned.
Tolstoy's influence on literature is without comparison.Authors regularly mention his novels as their highest ambition, works that they could only dream of writing themselves.American writer Francis Scott called Tolstoy the “greatest of all novelists” in his essay. He wrote,“from his first words, we can be sure of one thing at any rate — here is a man who sees what we see, who proceeds, too, as we are accustomed to proceeding, not from the outside inwards but from the inside outwards.”
“He defends fundamental values such as love, friendship and family relations. He gives positive answers to the questions mankind is asking. In this sense he gives more hope,”Tolstoy's great great grandson, Vladimir Ilyich Tolstoy, said.
Tolstoy's message of peace has even had an effect on the real world. He inspired the leader of India's independence movement, Mahatma Ghandi, and his philosophy of non violence over the course of a year in which they wrote letters to each other.

Follow Your Ears.
It's okay to ask “What does it mean?” when you are reading a poem. But it's even better to ask “How does it sound?” __17__ Even if you can't understand a single thing about a poem's “subject” or “theme”, you can always say something — anything — about the sound of the words.
__18__
OK, we're not saying you have to shout it from the rooftops. Read In Different Places.
Just like music, the experience of poetry changes depending on your mood and the environment. Read in as many different places as possible: at the beach, on a mountain, in the subway. __19__
Think Like A Poet.
Here's a fun exercise. Go through the poem one line at a time, covering up the next line with your hand so you can't see it. Put yourself in the poet's shoes: __20__ If you start to think like this, you'll be able to appreciate all the different choices that go into making a poem.
A.Be Patient.
B.Read It Aloud.
C.If all else fails, treat it like a song.
D.If I had to write a line to come after this line, what would I put
E.So if you don't get it, set the poem aside and come back to it later.
F.Here is a short list of tips that will make poems reading more enjoyable.
G.Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery for a poem to really come alive.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I looked up from my desk to see the teacher writing on the board: “Battle of the Books!” She smiled and said, “This time it's a teamwork. You're going to be in teams of two, and set a reading goal. Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!” The lunch bell sounded before she could explain any more rules.
As I gathered my things, Liya passed my desk and said, “Teammates?” Since Liya and I shared the same interest in graphic novel (漫画小说), and we took Hindi language class together, we teamed up automatically. I was both relieved and excited to have my team. Then we got to the cafeteria and quickly threw out a bunch of ideas of what to do at our table.
I looked to our third friend Kash, with whom the three of us always do stuff together, “Kash, do you have ideas for us?” “Why would I give you guys ideas?” he said gloomily (阴沉地). “I'll save that for my team ... whoever that is. Now I see how I rank in the friendship lineup.” Kash replied in an angry tone.
I knew he was mad for a reason. If I were him, not only would I think that I ranked last in that group, but I'd also be panicking about what team I could join. But now, I was on the inside and Kash wasn't. I felt like the only way to fix this would be three people on a team. So, as the teacher walked by our table, I asked for her permission. What surprised me was that she had intended to draw names to assign random groups, but didn't get a chance to say it before lunch.
Awkward and frustrated, we were stuck in this dilemma. Having first teamed up without Kash didn't mean we didn't like him. I knew we — especially I — wouldn't be able to enjoy any prize if our friend felt bad about being left out. So, I decided to do something to make it up for him and convince Kash he was an equal friend.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
That night, I was struck by an idea as I read a graphic novel that all three of us liked.
The next day, I handed my pages of apology to Kash.

第一节(参考范文)
Dear Mrs Green,
I am writing to inform you that I won the first prize in the English poetry recitation contest held in our school last Thursday. Thanks for your help. Without your patient guidance and continuous encouragement, I could not have made it.
Scenes of reciting one of Shakespeare's poems before hundreds of students and six serious looking judges still appear vividly before me. It was kind of you to set aside half an hour every day from your busy schedule to help me with everything from choosing the right poem to correcting my pronunciation.
Thanks again for your generous help.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(参考范文)
That night, I was struck by an idea as I read a graphic novel that all three of us liked. Thrilled and inspired, I sprang in front of my desk, racked my brains and started drawing a few scenes of three of us giggling, chattering and enjoying each other's company like we usually did. On the last page, I wrote, “Dear Kash, you are not the one left behind. Liya and I are so sorry about the way we messed things up.” Pierced to the heart with guilt, I cautiously tucked the paintings into an envelope, hoping this would be an icebreaker.
The next day, I handed my pages of apology to Kash. He took it, looking surprised at the first sight. After he read it, an expression of intense joy illuminated his eyes. Blushed, I broke the silence, “I'm sorry. We should have talked to you.” With her eyes fixed on the floor, Liya came over and apologized in a low voice, “You mean a lot to us.” Hearing her words, Kash shook his head and beamed, “I was way too sensitive.” We exchanged a knowing smile, realizing that sincerity, trust and communication were always the key to clearing up the misunderstanding between friends.
