Growing up, I always heard people say work hard pays. I never really understood these words until I reached the age where my parents stopped giving me my monthly allowance and asked me to look for a job.
New Year is a season of good news for merrymakers and entrepreneurial characters. My childhood friend was one of the latter. Mike and I were two sides of the same coin. I was an introvert and a bookworm, while Mike was outgoing and a merrymaker. His added advantage over me was that he came from a family of entrepreneurs. Therefore, while I saw the festive season as another time to enjoy, he saw it as a perfect time to make money. Ironically, I needed this side of him, given my present predicament (困境).
Mike was not of the “work hard pays” school of thought but the “work smart” school. When I told him about my predicament, he saw a business partner. He told me about his business idea — making and selling festive decorations. Having noticed my disbelieving look, he told me he had researched and realized that only one shop sold festive decorations with exorbitant (过高的) price, which meant that there was room for competition. However, I reminded him starting a business, let alone competing with an established enterprise, required capital. He told me, “Not really. All we had to do was make some decorations ourselves.” Upon that, we made some special designs and_hit_the_ground_running.
News about our selling decorations spread like wildfire. Mike's decision to publish brochures advertising our products was a genius marketing trick. Within three days, we had sold about 50 sets of decorations, and as they say, the rest is history.
My parents' decision to stop my monthly allowance served to teach me the value of work. However, it was my entrepreneurial adventure with Mike that taught me that working smart is better than working hard.

C.Working hard will finally pay off.
D.Working smart starts with working hard.

From self driving cars to carebots for elderly people, rapid development in technology has long represented a possible threat to many jobs normally performed by people. But experts now believe that almost 50 percent of occupations existing today will be completely unnecessary over the next few years as artificial intelligence continues to change businesses.
“The next fifteen years will see a revolution in how we work, and a revolution will necessarily take place in how we plan and think about workplaces,” said Peter Andrew, Director of Workplace Strategy for CBRE Asia Pacific.
A growing number of jobs in the future will require creative intelligence, social skills and the ability to use artificial intelligence.
The report is based on interviews with 200 experts, business leaders and young people from Asia Pacific, Europe and North America. It shows that in the US technology already ravages more job opportunities than it creates.
But the report states: “Losing occupations does not change what people do.” Growth in new jobs could occur as much, according to the research.
“The growth of 20 to 40 person companies that have the speed and technological know how will directly challenge big companies,” it states.
A report by Pew Research found 52 percent of experts in artificial intelligence and robotics were optimistic about the future and believed there would still be enough jobs in the next few years. The optimists pictured “a future in which robots do not take the place of more jobs than they create,” according to Aaron Smith, the report's co author.
“Technology will continue to affect jobs, but more jobs seem likely to be created. Although there have always been unemployed people, when we reached a few billion people there were billions of jobs. There is no shortage of things that need to be done and that will not change,” Jonathan Grudin told researchers.
8.Why does the author mention self driving cars and carebots in the first paragraph

C.Develops. D.Destroys.

A.Small companies will surely defeat big companies.
B.Big companies will face fewer challenges.
C.Work efficiency and technological operation will be of vital importance for companies.
D.In the future, everyone will be equipped with great social skills and the ability to use AI.
11.What can we infer from Jonathan Grudin's words in the last paragraph
A.People won't have to worry too much about job opportunities in the future.
B.A large number of people will become unemployed in the future.
C.Future jobs will be totally changed by technology.
D.Overpopulation will become a severe threat to employment.
D
There is no point destroying your peace of mind and happiness by taking the wrong job. Society may pressure you into grabbing (抓住) whatever you can get. If you do not have a set path that must be taken, then you have the opportunity to choose something you will not only be paid for doing, but enjoy.
One of the best ways of finding a suitable career is to determine your personality type. It may seem obvious that the creative type does not really find much pleasure in a job as a butcher (屠夫) or dry cleaning assistant, and that a weak character may not find happiness in a career based on teaching or leading a team.
To find the best job for your personality type, the first step is to know what and who you really are. If you already know your style, you can search for suitable employment; however, if you are uncertain, there are ways that will help you discover who and what you are. For example, an employment centre, a career adviser or an online quiz can help you.
Taking my own situation for example, I am definitely a creative type. Besides, I prefer to be my own boss or, if I cannot, at least I want to rely on a boss I truly both respect and admire. I do not like telling people what to do, or being told what to do. I do not relate well to regular 9-5 hours. I do not feel satisfied being paid a high wage for a bad job. I feel much happier at bining my creativity, independence, and desire to stay at home, my ideal career would be running a home operated business involving creativity. I actually happen to have chosen this solution; I am a writer, poet, author and publisher. I have suited my career to my personality type.
12.The first paragraph is used as a(n) ________.
A.example B.introduction
C.conclusion D.contrast
13.The author thinks in order to find the right job we should first know about ________.
A.something about employment centre
B.online job markets
C.our personality types
D.the economic situation
14.Which of the following statements about the author is TRUE
A.He prefers to rely on his colleagues.
B.He dislikes home operated businesses.
C.He likes giving orders to others and doesn't like facing orders.
D.He doesn't like the usual way of doing things.
15.What is the main idea of the text
A.Creativity and chances of success.
B.Jobs and your peace of mind.
C.Following the set path and making life easier.
D.Finding the right job for your personality type.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One day, I was taking a summer class in American literature on the campus of The State University of New York at Oneonta. Professor James walked into the classroom and announced that he had invited a special guest to class, but his guest had been delayed. The class stirred with curiosity and anticipation.
“Who is coming?” someone asked. “All I will tell you is that he is the author of one of the books you have read for this class,” he said. “I need a volunteer to meet him and guide him here.”
To my amazement, my right hand shot up. I never volunteer for anything. I'm introverted (内向的), shy, and uncomfortable meeting new people. In fact, I'm absolutely the wrong person for the job. Realizing my mistake, I put my hand down quickly, but it was too late.
“Thank you, David,” said Professor James. “You'd better leave now. He will be arriving any minute.” Seeing no way to back out, I reluctantly got out of my seat and headed for the classroom door. When I reached it, I stopped. “Umm,” I said. “If I don't know who this person is, how will I recognize him I would hate to bring back the wrong guy.” Professor James laughed. “Good point,” he said. He pulled me aside and whispered a name in my ear. “Alex Haley,” he said. “Really?” I said.
I regretted for volunteering. Why me Alex Haley is one of the authors of The Autobiography of Malcolm X: As Told to Alex Haley. He is so famous. As I walked across the campus, my anxiety grew. I feared that I was about to embarrass myself in front of the famous gentleman by asking stupid questions, or worse, by guiding him in painful silence.
But at the moment I realized why I instinctively raised my hand to volunteer for this job. The man was what I wanted to be: a writer. I could learn from him.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式作答。
I paced back and forth until a man with a briefcase entered the building.
Encouraged by Mr Haley, I stopped worrying whether I had the talent for writing.

参考范文:
I paced back and forth until a man with a briefcase entered the building. I approached him, asking if he was Alex Haley. He nodded politely. I introduced myself to him. My heart pounded. However, after talking with him briefly, I was struck by how approachable he was. My fear was replaced by curiosity and admiration. I told him I wanted to be a writer, but I didn't know if I had the talent. He laughed and said, “There is no magical gift. Put in the work. Write every day, and don't give up until you succeed.”
Encouraged by Mr Haley, I stopped worrying whether I had the talent for writing. Instead, I started accumulating writing materials and practised writing every day. Whatever happened, I stuck to my initial aspiration and kept in the right track. Within two years, I published three stories in national children's magazines. I have been writing and publishing ever since. Had I not volunteered to meet this extraordinary man, I would never have received the benefit of his wise advice and the rewards that followed.
