My family and I had set out on a day trip from Shillong to Cherrapunji, a town known for being one of the wettest places on Earth. However, after we had been stuck in traffic for more than four hours, one of my sisters proposed going back to the city as a last attempt to save whatever remained of the day. A quick online search revealed other must visit spots around Shillong. Most were familiar, but one caught our attention — Nartiang with its mysterious monoliths (独石碑). The photo showed tall stones piled together in a strange formation, appealing to us to explore further despite the lack of details provided.
That is how I found myself standing in the shadow of the huge monoliths of Nartiang, which is home to the thickest and largest collection in the region. Curious to uncover their history, I approached Maryo Symblai, a village elder I met later that day, who told me the story of the monoliths that has been orally passed down over generations. She said, “Back in the day, Nartiang didn't have a bazaar (集市) and the nearest one was at Raliang. On one such bazaar, a giant named Mar Phalyngki was caught in heavy rain on his way back. He requested to borrow an umbrella from the Raliang chief's youngest daughter, but she wanted to test his legendary strength instead. ‘Why don't you go to lift that huge stone in the bazaar and use it as an umbrella?’ she said impolitely. Emboldened by her challenge, he just did that, but before reaching Nartiang, he placed it in a forest when the rain had stopped.”
“There is a certain overlap of ancient story and memory in the case of the Nartiang monoliths. The locals' account of how the place came to be is based on ancient stories or folk customs. But they also remember it because it served their ancestors as a weekly marketplace, a memorial, and a place for political gatherings. That is how oral history works. It mixes fact and fiction into collective memory,” said Dr Reeju Ray, a local writer.
Today, even though the traditional customs and more confirmed historical accounts offer some insight into the site, the mystery (奥秘) of the stone giants lasts.
4.Why did the author and his family come to visit the monoliths of Nartiang

A lot of manufactured glass today made from sand and sodium carbonate (碳酸钠) can be reused or melted down and recycled into new items, but it doesn't break down in the environment and will sit in landfills for thousands of years. A team of Chinese scientists aimed to deal with this environmental concern by developing an eco conscious alternative.
In a study published recently in the journal Science Advances, a team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Institute of Process Engineering described how they engineered biodegradable glass made from amino acids (氨基酸). That glass would have a smaller impact on the environment and can break down in a few weeks or in several months.
In a test, glass beads (珠) made out of amino acids were placed under the skin of mice, and the breakdown of the beads and the skin healing process were observed for 30 days. A diagram from the study shows how the mice's bodies broke down the beads. In that month, the glass implant degraded beneath the skin, the wound site healed, and fur grew back. “Throughout the experimental period, no mice exhibited any pain related behavior that may have been caused by the glass implantation, and none of them experienced obvious weight loss,” the researchers wrote in their paper.
Although amino acids do degrade over time in the environment, this biodegradable glass is not as durable as traditional glass, because amino acids can break down quickly in heat. In order to overcome this hurdle,_the researchers chemically modified the amino acids using the heating cooling procedure applied in glass manufacturing. This is when materials for the glass are heated to become soft and then rapidly cooled so as to make the glass tougher.
“It's important to point out that this biodegradable glass is currently in the lab stage, and far from large scale commercialization,” emphasized Yan Xuehai, a professor involved in the study, in a press release.
8.What is an advantage of the new glass
A.It can be recycled at a low cost.
B.It is produced without pollution.
C.It takes less time to break down.
D.It has a wide range of applications.
9.Why did researchers implant glass beads inside mice
A.To assess whether the glass is biologically harmless.
B.To investigate why amino acids are medically useful.
C.To explore how long it takes for the glass to degrade.
D.To observe if the glass can be melt down in mice's stomach.
10.What does the underlined word “hurdle” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.The instability of amino acids.
B.The difficulty of selecting materials for the glass.
C.Environmental problems caused by traditional glass.
D.The challenge of improving the heating cooling procedure.
11.What is the attitude of Yan Xuehai towards the new glass's launch on the market
A.Optimistic. B.Critical.
C.Indifferent. D.Uncertain.

Thinking of getting your child to take up a sport that involves (牵涉) a coach or instructor Good news: A new study finds that children who take part in organized physical activity at a young age are less likely to have emotional difficulties by the time they turn 12.
“The elementary school years are a key time in child development,” said Frederic N. Brier, a psycho education professor who led the study, published this month in Pediatric Research. “And every parent wants to raise a well adjusted child.”
Researchers followed a birth group over time to examine whether continual participation in organized sport from 6 to 10 would lower risks related with emotional distress(情绪困扰), anxiety, shyness, social pullback at the age of 12. Their goal was to test this question as critically as possible by eliminating (排除) pre existing child or family conditions that could offer an alternative explanation.
To do this, Brier and his team examined data from a group of children born in 1997 or 1998 who are part of the Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development. From age 6 to 10, mothers reported whether their children participated in organized physical activity. At the age of 12, teachers reported on the children's levels of emotional distress, anxiety, shyness, and social pullback at school.
“The results revealed that children who participated frequently from 6 to 10 showed fewer instances of those factors at the age of 12 than their peers who did not join in physical activity in a continual way,” said Brier. “We found these benefits above and beyond pre existing individual and family characteristics.”
“Getting kids actively involved in organized sport seems to promote global development. This involvement appears to be good on a socio emotional level and not just because of physical benefits. Being less emotionally distressed at the key stage between elementary and high school is a priceless benefit for children, as they are about to enter a much larger universe with bigger academic challenges. This research supports current parental guidelines promoting children's involvement in physical activity,” Brier concluded.
12.Why did Brier's team follow a birth group over time
A.To check their health.
B.To test their guess.
C.To learn about their study.
D.To find out suitable sports.
13.How did the researchers reach their conclusion
A.By analyzing data.
B.By doing survey on teachers.
C.By doing experiments.
D.By organizing physical activities.
14.What does Brier think of the results
A.They are of little value.
B.They need further testing.
C.They are against their guess.
D.They are up to his expectation.
15.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.It's easy to raise a well adjusted child
B.Organized sport promotes emotional difficulties
C.School education is critical for child development
D.Sticking to organized sport can help kids adjust

My great grandfather,my grandfather and my father are farmers, and so are all my family. My father has a fixed idea that I would become a farmer too.Although I respect him and am indeed skilled at doing some farm work,I don't agree that I should follow in my father's footsteps.
When I was a teenager, my father happened to take me to an airport which belonged to one of his friends. It was the first time that I had seen an aeroplane in real life.Knowing that I had never been on board,my father's friend Tom offered me an opportunity to fly with him in his small aeroplane.I quickly accepted his offer! When we took off, I felt nervous but thrilled.Being up in the clouds and looking at the view below was unlike anything I had ever felt.I was just enjoying it.I assumed being a pilot would be the most awesome thing in the whole world. From that day a thought crept into my mind that I wanted to become a pilot, but I doubted whether my father would support me.After all, it was a totally different path from what he had planned for me.Therefore,I put the thought to the back of my mind, because I knew he would still insist on holding onto his previous idea.
Anyway, besides helping my father on the farm,I would frequently visit Tom's airport.Gradually,I got familiar with every button and switch on the aircraft and I learned a lot about planes, such as how to fill the plane with fuel, how to check the engines and so on.But what I had learned just left me wanting more, so I decided to go to college to become a professional pilot.

Volunteer Together
I once participated in a volunteer activity at a local primary school. We spent time playing with the children, helping them with their studies, and organizing fun activities.
Through this experience, I not only learned the importance of giving and caring but also felt the joy of bringing happiness to others. It made me realize that a small act of kindness can have a big impact on someone's life. Volunteering has truly changed me and I'll keep doing it. Roses given, fragrance in hand. Keep in mind that helping others will benefit ourselves as well.

参考范文:
This time I would not hide my desire any more. Determined to follow my heart, I explained to my father how I felt.I told him that I wanted to go to a college to learn to be a pilot instead of being a farmer. After saying this,I waited nervously for his reaction. To my surprise,he approved of my request, and he told me he was moved by my perseverance. With his support and my efforts, I was admitted into my ideal college.
At the graduation ceremony, with my father present, I, as “Best Pilot”, had to deliver a speech. In my speech,I shared with the audience my story about how a teenager realized his dream.Faced with difficulties,I took a path that led me to do something that needed passion, training and practice.I also owed my success to my father. Without his understanding, I couldn't have pursued my dream. At the end of my speech,I spotted my father's watery eyes, and said,“Dad,I made it!” His face lit up with pride.
