In 1901→a five year old girl (in 1906)→At age 18(in 1919)→Eight years later (in 1927)→a few years→In 1939→In 1941→In 1954→over the next several decades→22 April, 1983。
1.She responded,“I'd rather stay single to study all my life!”
2.Dr Lin, however, rejected the offer.
3.She was more interested in tending patients, publishing medical research on care for women and children, and training the next generation of doctors.
赏析:与take care of或look after相比,tend更侧重于“精心护理”。
①I ________________________________________ first than go straight on to university.
②If you __________________________________, you should write back to explain the reason for rejection.
③Ambulance crew ______________ the injured.
1.To a person nothing is more precious than their life ...
句中“nothing is more ...than ...”
2.“...Finding a good husband should be their final goal!” her brother complained, thinking of the high tuition fees.
句中Finding a good husband是动名词短语在句中作主语;thinking of the high tuition fees是现在分词短语在句中作状语。

1.The new People's Republic of China saw Dr Lin Qiaozhi playing a key role.
2.“I'm ready to go,” she said.“Don't try to rescue me any more.Don't waste the medicine any more.”

The Well That Changed the World
As a six-year-old Canadian schoolboy, Ryan had trouble believing the words spoken by his teacher .He looked across the classroom at the drinking fountain. It was very close — only ten steps away. So, Ryan asked himself,“Why do some African children have to walk ten kilometres to get water every day? Young Ryan thought, “Life is easy for me, but hard for those people. Why don't I help?”
At first, his plan was to earn money to build a single well somewhere in Africa. He cleaned windows and did gardening for his family and neighbours. He soon reached his first target of $70, but when he gave the money to a charity, he was told . Ryan understood that a hand pump wouldn't help the children.
Two thousand dollars was a lot of money, but Ryan didn't give up.He was determined to help other children have clean water. He started to ask for help from his classmates and neighbours and persuaded them to donate money. At the same time, a friend of Ryan's mother helped make his story go public. After several months, Ryan had raised the $2,000, primary school in Uganda. The children at the school no longer needed to walk for hours to get water. They were grateful to him and invited him to visit.
In Uganda, Ryan at last saw the finished well with his own eyes. But that was not all.He also saw hundreds of delighted students who had turned out to welcome him. They sang and danced happily. Some even offered him food and gifts. At first Ryan was nervous, but soon a great warmth filled him.He really had made a difference for these children. He broke into a joyful smile.
Later, Ryan's experience led him to set up a foundation to encourage more people to help. Many inspired people gave him their support.Ryan's foundation continues to attract support from more and more people, so the work of building more wells can go on.Today, over 800,000 people in 16 countries across Africa have benefited from the life-changing gift of clean, safe water.
Now, as an adult, Ryan says that the question to ask is not “Why don't I help?”, but “How can I help today?”.This insight grew from the determined attitude of a six-year-old boy who had the courage and perseverance to make his dream a reality.

I'm a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year.In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs.I enjoy studying and have consistently received A's in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad.Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home.Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work.Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job.He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks' home.My grandparents had raised me since I was a child.I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died.Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points.I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I'm contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help.I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I'm especially proud of my service at the old folks' home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future.I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.

Hard work really does pay off.Scientists find that perseverance (坚持不懈) leads to better grades and higher achievements in school.
“Being passionate (热情的) is not enough to ensure academic success,” say researchers, who thought of “courage” as a key to success. This is also regarded as effort in reaching long-term goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.
Researchers think that the finding could help create new training to help children develop the skill and help ensure their future success.
Researchers from the Academy of Finland studied more than 2,000 students from Helsinki. They were followed through their academic career from 12 to 16, the sixth grade until the ninth grade in local school years.Researchers found that the factor that best predicts courage was related to goals, with previous academic achievements playing no role in developing the skill.
Professor Katariina Salmela-Aro, who led the study, said, “Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily.A key element of courage is high perseverance when facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well-being.Our study shows the power of courage.”
Professor Salmela-Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added, “Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves.Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with weaknesses. One must not be discouraged by weaknesses, but draw strength and new energy from them.”

I'm a seventeen year old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year.In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs.I enjoy studying and have consistently received A's in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad.Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home.Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work.Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part time job.He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.

This is also regarded as effort in reaching long term goals, and determination to continue one's efforts in spite of hardships.
Professor Katariina Salmela Aro, who led the study, said, “Courage means a young person is really interested in his or her studies and does not give up easily.A key element of courage is high perseverance when facing difficulties and hardships. The important finding is that these factors are the key to success and well being. Our study shows the power of courage.”
Professor Salmela Aro also thinks it is important to develop new practices and qualities to improve courage in teenagers. She added, “Young people should see everyday school work as part of their life in a broader context and establish achievable goals for themselves.Schools must also serve as a place where it is safe to fail and learn to deal with weaknesses. One must not be discouraged by weaknesses, but draw strength and new energy from them.”
