Why we explore
In 1969, when Neil Armstrong first landed on the Moon, many people thought that soon we would be regularly visiting other planets in our solar system and would even dare to travel beyond it.This is clearly not the case. The reality is that space exploration is extremely difficult and dangerous, can take a very long time and costs a huge amount of money. Some people believe that while space exploration expands our understanding of the universe, it is a waste of the public purse and does nothing to enhance the quality of our lives here on the Earth. Why do we continue to explore space, then
It is in our nature to explore. From the very early days of human life on the Earth, our curiosity about the unknown has kept us adventuring into new places. We long to visit thick and wild forests, climb vast mountain ranges, and cross deep oceans. We desire to explore the furthest frontier of all — space. As Stephen Hawking once said, “Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.. Be curious.” That we are fascinated by the sky is evident in ancient tales from around the world, such as that of Chang'e.While space exploration is a reality, we remain curious about the mysteries of the universe. With each space mission comes greater insight, thus motivating us to continue.
The results of these space investigations have made major contributions to an understanding of the origin, evolution, and likely future of the universe, such as planets, stars, and all other forms of matter and energy.Exploring space helps address fundamental questions about our place in the universe and the history of our solar system. confirmed that the Earth is round and that it orbits the Sun. As we learn more about the universe, we may one day answer the question whether there is life on other planets.
With technologies first researched and developed for space exploration, we can solve some of the big problems facing mankind, making our lives safer and easier. One of these is earthquake shock absorbers. Shock absorbers originally applied to the space shuttle launch have also been set up in the cities with a high frequency of earthquakes in order to protect buildings and save lives. Some technologies need further research to better solve real-life problems. For example, liquid hydrogen is a clean alternative energy source that is used widely as rocket fuel, and it is likely that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be mass-produced and launched in the near future. These scientific and technological advances can provide benefits to societies on the Earth in many areas including health, energy and information technology. This should be a strong motive for continuing to explore space.
Although space exploration demands huge investment, the space industry can actually bring great economic value. It has been calculated that the global space economy is increasing by billions of dollars every year.At the same time, space exploration can provide a variety of career opportunities for young people.Jobs in the space industry go far beyond the astronauts that receive widespread media coverage. There are many support staff on the ground, such as engineers, mechanics and research assistants.
Moreover, the amazing work these people do can provide education and inspiration for the next generation. For me personally, this is by far the biggest reason for humanity to explore space.Such wonders as a space shuttle launch or astronauts walking on the Moon are incredibly exciting and inspiring to witness, and it can be these moments them to become the scientists and engineers of the future. our thirst for knowledge alive and ensures that advances in space exploration and many other fields will continue to be made. When you have seen a man walk on the Moon, you grow up believing that anything is possible!

A
Over the past few years, China's aerospace industry has witnessed many landmark events.Apart from celebrating these scientific achievements, the public has also developed a growing interest in the missions' unique names, of which many are derived from China's myths and legends.
China's spacecraft are called Shenzhou. This literally means “heavenly ship” in Chinese, and is also a homonym for the Chinese words “divine land”, which is a term used in literary works to refer to the country.China's moon exploration project and its lunar probe (月球探测器) are both named after a Chinese goddess of the moon, Chang'e.In 2013, the Chang'e-3 lunar probe landed on the moon and was carried around by a lunar rover (月球车) called Yutu. The two names perfectly match the legend of the moon fairy and her pet.
In another example, the relay satellite for the Chang'e-4 moon exploration mission is called Queqiao, or “magpie bridge”.The magpie bridge, in a Chinese folk tale, was formed by millions of magpies, so that a separated couple could meet each other despite the Milky Way.Likewise, the Queqiao relay satellite serves as a “space-bridge”for communication between the moon and the earth.
Chinese people's eagerness for the universe dates back to ancient times, some even tried to explore.Luban, a great inventor living in the Eastern Zhou Dynasty, made a flying wood bird.Others created many myths and legends, such as “Kuafu Chases the Sun”, to explain phenomena that they could not explain. These traditional stories have become the source of inspiration for Chinese scientists in the naming of major space missions.
The famous spacecraft and rovers built by the United States include the Challenger, the Opportunity and the Spirit, whose names reflect a positive and enterprising spirit. This is quite unlike how the Chinese name their spacecraft, which reflects the Chinese people's sense of romance and awe for space as well as their efforts to pass down traditional culture and their ancestors' spirit of scientific discovery.Nevertheless, all these names, Chinese or foreign, showcase the dreams of humankind and our collective pursuit to discover the secrets of space.
When Apollo 11 prepared to land on the moon, the control center on earth told the astronauts onboard to “watch for a lovely girl with a big rabbit”, which refers to Chang'e and her rabbit Yutu. With the rapid progress of China's aerospace industry, more and more Chinese stories embodying Chinese romanticism will be shown to the world.
1.How is paragraph 2 developed
A.By making comparisons.
B.By describing processes.
C.By giving examples.
D.By analyzing causes.
√
2.Why the relay satellite was named “Queqiao”?
A.Because this name can draw public attention.
B.Because this name comes from a Chinese folk tale.
C.Because this name reflects Chinese romanticism.
D.Because this name indicates the function of the relay satellite.
√
3.What can we infer from the last three paragraphs
A.The ancient Chinese explored the space to create myths and legends.
B.Some spaces missions' names are originated from traditional stories.
C.China and the US name their spacecraft differently because of different pursuits.

The Moon is attracting much attention these days as NASA is ready for its Artemis Ⅰ launch and preparing for more to follow. The mission objectives are clear: develop a sustainable presence on its surface and pave the way to go to Mars.
And then what What's the next great leap in humans' quest for the secrets of the universe When it comes to the near future scientific exploration, there are a few areas of the solar system that will be receiving some special attention.
First off, there's Venus, a planet which was a relative paradise with oceans and a pleasant atmosphere.Something went terribly wrong there a few billion years ago, and NASA has scheduled a series of missions to explore what exactly is going on there.
At the other end are the gas giants.Several of the satellites of Jupiter and Saturn are covered in thick sheets of ice, and underneath that ice sit oceans of liquid water.NASA has missions planned to investigate those mysterious worlds, hunting for any signs of possible life hidden deep within.
As for us humans, Mars is certainly the grand prize in the coming decades. If we have the adequate drive and funds, we can establish a semi-permanent presence on the red planet, keeping crews working and studying in person on the Martian surface. The other planets of our solar system are not so suitable for people to settle on.Mercury is too close to the Sun for comfort and too far away from the Earth.
Over the coming decades, humans expect to see a rise of “space hotels”, set up for visiting tourists and scientific explorations. Naturally, turning the space rock into a habitat for humans is not very practical considering our current level of technological maturity, but in my best estimation, it's the next easiest thing to accomplish after the Moon and Mars, of course.

It sounds like something from science fiction — a space journey into the vast expanse of space, heading towards Mars. While we're not quite ready to put a person on the land, the question we ask today is:
9
The space race saw the USA and USSR compete to achieve the first in spaceflight. The Soviet Union released Sputnik 1, an artificial satellite (人造卫星), before anyone else. 10 Now it appears that Mars is the heaven body of desire. While the reputation and bragging (吹嘘) rights to be the first nation to touch down is an obvious draw, there are other reasons we want to get there.
11 You only have to look at the fossilized remains of the dinosaurs to see the benefit of finding another habitable planet. While Mars doesn't have the right conditions to call it home just yet, there's always the concept of terraforming (地球化) — changing the environment of a planet to meet our needs.
However, not everyone agrees. 12 He has said the concept of changing habitability of another planet because of the damage we have done to Earth makes no sense when we can simply terraform Earth.
It seems the main reason is the search for extraterrestrial (地球外的) life. 13 But now seemingly dead, the potential fossils could answer questions about our own evolution and that of our planet. One theory is that bacterial life on our planet didn't start here, but was transferred via asteroid from Mars.
A.Leading astrophysicist Neil Tyson is one of them.
B.And the US landed on the Moon first.
C.One of these could be the survival of our species.
D.May landing on Mars inspire more people to become interested in science
E.It has been believed that, at one time, Mars was filled with life.
F.Surely inspiring a new generation to visit the stars is reason enough.
G.Why are so many countries interested in going to Mars
10.选B 前文“The space race saw the USA and USSR compete to ...an artificial satellite (人造卫星), before anyone else.”
12.选A 根据前文“However, not everyone agrees.”
13.选E 前文“It seems the main reason is the search for extraterrestrial (地球外的) life”介绍寻找外星生命的理由,空处应该与外星生命有关,因此E项(人们相信,火星曾经充满了生命)符合语境,指出火星上可能曾有生命,承接前文,且at one time呼应后文“But now seemingly dead”中的now。

Over the past few years, China's aerospace industry has witnessed many landmark events.Apart from celebrating these scientific achievements, the public has also developed a growing interest in the missions' unique names, of which many are derived from China's myths and legends.
China's spacecraft are called Shenzhou. This literally means “heavenly ship” in Chinese, and is also a homonym for the Chinese words “divine land”, which is a term used in literary works to refer to the country.China's moon exploration project and its lunar probe (月球探测器) are both named after a Chinese goddess of the moon, Chang'e.In 2013, the Chang'e 3 lunar probe landed on the moon and was carried around by a lunar rover (月球车) called Yutu. The two names perfectly match the legend of the moon fairy and her pet.In another example, the relay satellite for the Chang'e 4 moon exploration mission is called Queqiao, or “magpie bridge”.The magpie bridge, in a Chinese folk tale, was formed by millions of magpies, so that a separated couple could meet each other despite the Milky Way.Likewise, the Queqiao relay satellite serves as a “space bridge”for communication between the moon and the earth.
2.Why the relay satellite was named “Queqiao”?
A.Because this name can draw public attention.
B.Because this name comes from a Chinese folk tale.
C.Because this name reflects Chinese romanticism.
D.Because this name indicates the function of the relay satellite.
3.What can we infer from the last three paragraphs
A.The ancient Chinese explored the space to create myths and legends.
B.Some spaces missions' names are originated from traditional stories.
C.China and the US name their spacecraft differently because of different pursuits.
D.China's aerospace industry has changed the world.
4.What is the best title for the text
A.Space Missions' Names
B.How to name Space Missions
C.Space Missions' Names Embody Chinese Romanticism
D.Chinese Myths and Legends
