As the Civil War drew to a close, tens of thousands of men were missing. Clara Barton and her small staff of the Missing Soldiers Office were able to locate over 22,000 men, some of whom were still alive.
Of the 22,000 men located by the Missing Soldiers Office, 13,000 were in one place: Andersonville Prison. These men were located due to the wisdom and courage of another soldier: Atwater. As a prisoner, he was responsible for burying the men who passed away, and keeping a list of their names and the locations of their graves (坟墓). Atwater secretly kept a copy of the list for himself. When the war ended, he wanted to publish the list. He ultimately turned to Clara to do so. Together they not only published the list naming 13,000 men who died in Andersonville, they ensured each of the 13,000 men’s graves were marked.
In 1868, Clara packed up her things and headed off for Europe and a break. However, she didn’t relax. Instead, she met representatives from the International Red Cross who inspired her to found the American Red Cross.

Described as bottled poetry, wine is one of our wonderful creations. Nothing conveys that better than the great flavor of New Zealand’s wines. However, New Zealand’s wine industry struggles with issues like pesticide (杀虫剂) use, water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change impacts like droughts and disease. Fortunately, the Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ) program offers hope by improving the industry’s environmental practices.
First launched in 1995, SWNZ was one of the world’s first sustainability certifications for winemakers. Since then, it’s been widely adopted. Members of the program must submit annual reports and undergo independent examination. Besides its commitment to environmental health, the program also focuses on employees working in the industry, climate action, water conservation, waste reduction and soil health. Over 90% of New Zealand’s vineyards (葡萄园) participate, showing the industry’s commitment.
While only a small percentage of these vineyards are fully organic, most of them use eco-friendly pest control. For example, they cut off vines to increase airflow and sunlight to reduce diseases naturally. They remove some leaves sometimes to improve soil and save water. Besides, they turn to SWNZ for help to prevent the spread of unwanted diseases.
Wine production also causes other environmental impacts. A lot of water is needed during the process. Therefore, most of vineyards have practices to reduce water use, including recycling cleaning water and purchasing new equipment for better water use. Together with wine, lots of waste is produced in the form of grape skins, seeds and stems. Most vineyards compost (把……制成堆肥) this waste, spread it back to the earth, or turn it into feed for livestock.
New Zealand’s wine industry, though small, has global influence. In 2024, exports reached $2.1 billion, making it the country’s sixth-largest export. By taking small, consistent steps—like lighter packaging and carbon reduction—the industry aims to balance quality wine with a healthier planet. As climate challenges grow, SWNZ’s model offers lessons for industries worldwide.
8. What is the SWNZ program working on
A. Creating best wine worldwide.
B. Employing workers for wineyards.
C. Awarding certificates to skillful winemakers.
D. Controlling the environmental impacts of winemaking.
9. What do we know about the vineyards from the examples in paragraph 3
A. Most of them are fully organic.
B. Eco-friendly methods are widely used.
C. The farmers gain more profits.
D. Unwanted diseases have been totally prevented.
10. Which practice has been widely adopted in New Zealand
A. Using water more efficiently.
B. Applying pesticide to reduce diseases.
C Reducing waste in wine production.
D. Raising money for buying new equipment.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Influence of New Zealand’s Winemakers
B. Benefits from New Zealand’s Wine Industry
C. Developmental challenges of Wine Production
D. Sustainable Solutions in New Zealand’s Wine Industry
D
A team of researchers in China has found a way to bring dead lithium-ion (锂) batteries back to life, potentially reducing both the amount of waste that’s quickly piling up from spent electric vehicle (EV) batteries and the need to produce as many new ones.
The amount of spent lithium-ion batteries that need to deal with is expected to rise sharply from an estimate of 900,000 metric tons this year to 20.5 million metric tons by 2040, according to a report released by the United Nations Development Program last September. So Gao, a chemist at Fudan University in Shanghai and his colleagues wanted to find a molecule (分子) that could refill a dead cell by adding it with lithium ions.
The researchers used an artificial intelligence model trained on the rules of chemistry. They fed it a database of electrochemical reactions and had it look for molecules that would meet their requirements, such as dissolving well in an electrolyte (电解质) solution and being relatively cheap to produce. The model recommended three candidates, and the team identified one of them, a salt called lithium trifluoromethanesulfinate (LiSO2CF3), as ideal.
Gao and his colleagues found that the chemical mixture could significantly extend the lifetime of a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cell. An LFP battery that powers an EV can typically be charged and then discharged about 2,000 times before it is considered “dead” (when its capacity is below the 80 percent mark). By adding the electrolyte whenever the battery neared that threshold, the team was able to restore most of the cell’s capacity each time — and it carried on working almost as well as a new battery. By the end of the experiment, the cell regained 96 percent capacity after nearly 12,000 charge-discharge cycles.
A follow-up experiment showed the method also worked on NMC (nickel, manganese and cobalt) lithium-ion batteries, Gao says.
Fudan University is currently working with China-based battery-material maker to commercialize the method. Gao imagines a widespread system of “battery-boosting stations” where EV owners will be able to bring dead power sources to be fixed.
12. What is the purpose of the second paragraph
A. To criticize poor recycling efforts.
B. To explain battery recycling chemistry.
C. To show battery waste problem and research aim.
D. To lead in a topic of a new battery production method.
13. How did the researchers find the right chemical for batteries
A. Through using computer analysis.
B. Through trying every possible salt.
C. By copying old research methods.
D. By doing regular scientific experiments.
14. What does the underlined word “threshold” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Peak. B. Wavelength. C. Tune. D. Limit.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The technology is already used in all EVs.
B. Market application requires business partnerships.
C. Fudan University will work alone on this project.
D. The system only works for experimental batteries.

For the past five years, our family of four has been visiting Sunshine Cafe, a comfortable little coffee shop located just two blocks from our house. What began as simple weekend treats slowly turned into our cherished Saturday morning tradition. Every week, without fail, we would gather at our favorite spot, sharing stories and laughter over steaming cups of coffee and freshly baked pastries.
The cafe holds a special place in our hearts, especially because of how welcoming the staff have always been to my younger sister Lily, who has Down syndrome (唐氏综合征). When she first started coming to the cafe, she was fascinated by everything around her. Now, at 14, she still loves chatting with the staff, who always listen to her with genuine interest and patience. Their kindness has made her feel at home, and it’s one of the reasons we keep coming back.
Sunshine Cafe isn’t very large. But somehow, the round corner table by the bookshelf became “our table”. The baristas (咖啡师) would always greet us with a cheerful “Your spot is ready!” even if we never made reservations.
That table holds so many precious memories. It’s where Lily first learned to order by herself, where we celebrated her school achievements, and where she discovered her love for hot chocolate with marshmallows. The owner, Ms. Lee, often surprises Lily with small treats — a cookie shaped like a heart, a cup with extra whipped cream, or even a little drawing on her napkin (餐巾). These small gestures have made Lily feel special and loved.
Through the years, we’ve watched the seasons change through that window. That corner of the cafe has become our safe haven, a place where Lily feels completely at ease and where our family can connect without distractions.
Last Saturday, however, our routine was disrupted. Our bus was delayed due to road construction, and we arrived at the cafe 20 minutes later than usual. Lily started moving nervously as we walked in. By the time we reached the door, she was visibly upset, her hands holding her bag tightly.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
The barista at the counter immediately noticed Lily’s distress.

第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 The barista at the counter immediately noticed Lily’s distress. Before I could say anything, Ms. Lee appeared, carrying Lily’s favorite polka-dot cup filled with steaming hot chocolate. “We saved your special drink, Lily,” she said gently. “And look — I found a new book about puppies for you.” Seeing her familiar cup and the kind faces, Lily’s breathing slowed, and she managed a small smile. The staff’s thoughtfulness had once again turned a difficult moment into a comforting one.
Just as I was about to explain our lateness, Lily did something unexpected. She reached into her bag and pulled out a slightly wrinkled drawing she’d made of the cafe. “This is for you,” she said to Ms. Lee, “because this is my happy place.” Ms. Lee was so surprised that tears welled in her eyes as she accepted the gift. Then, Ms. Lee gave Lily a warm hug, showing her gratefulness. That morning taught us all that true happiness isn’t about fancy things, but about finding places — and people — who make you feel at home.
