A
Artist Tom Campbell has exhibited his work at Outlaw Studios at Marina Commercial Park. The exhibition is Tom's largest one to date and includes affordable art. The interactive show is made up of drawings, paintings, sculptures and live performances. Throughout the exhibition, Tom is working, giving the public an opportunity to watch inside his studio and have their portraits drawn. People can also commission a piece of their choosing.
Wall painting is part of Tom's output. He has created a wall painting for Electric Picnic, along with four other artists invited to take part in this commission. His wall painting has a special theme, portrayed by doves (鸽子). As well as his anti-war standpoint, he is doing something meaningful. Tom is a founding member of a tree planting project called Trees Please. The group has distributed 10,000 trees in about four years across Ireland.
Humour is also important for Tom in his art. He can treat heavy subjects with irony, often employing an aggressive combination of lively colors and animals with wistful expressions, communicating the importance of respect, peace, understanding and love. He has done creative work for mental health charities.
Tom was born with a love for art. He enjoys playing musical instruments in public, like the violin. He gets lots of smiles from people. He also sings and has an online channel featuring his songs, which are very improvised (即兴的). All this creativity is a lifeline for him, who believes that art is a necessity rather than a luxury.
Art is something everybody can do. If creativity was embraced by people in an open way, it could transform society. Art can bring a lot of joy. Everyone is creative and enjoys creativity whether it's music or visual art or whatever.

French writer Annie Ernaux won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature on Oct 6. She is the first French female to win the prize. In the words of the Nobel Committee, Ernaux was given the award for the courage and amazing insight of her writing.
Having spent over five decades as a writer, the 84-year-old winner has published more than 20 books to her name, including Cleaned Out (1974), Shame (1997) and A Girl's Story (2016).
Rather than consider herself a writer of fiction, Ernaux has used the term “an ethnologist (民族学家) of herself” to describe herself.
Born in 1940 in a rural village in Normandy, France, Ernaux grew up in a working-class environment as her parents ran a combined grocery store and café. She worked as a teacher before becoming a full-time writer. Her upbringing features heavily in her novels, as well as her experiences navigating adolescence and adulthood. For example, the book Shame explores the theme of childhood trauma (创伤) while A Girl's Story follows a young woman's coming of age in the 1950s.
Though the matters Ernaux describes in her books are serious and even sometimes heavy, they are always written in a plain language. Ernaux described her style as “flat writing” through which she aims to tell her stories objectively. “Unshaped by florid (过多修饰的) description or overwhelming emotions,” noted Fox News.
“She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so forth. I mean, really hard experiences,” Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said after the award announcement in Stockholm. He added, “She gives words for these experiences that are very simple and striking. They are short books, but they are really moving.”
5.What can we learn about Annie Ernaux from the text
A.She is a full-time writer all her life.
B.She is the first French person to win the Nobel Prize.
C.The Nobel Committee described her as “an ethnologist of herself”.
D.She was awarded for the bravery and observations shown in her writing.

A.Her students' lives. B.Her personal experiences.
C.The history of her hometown. D.The stories of guests in her café.

A.Plain and relaxing.
B.Descriptive and serious.

D.Objective and easy to understand.
8.Why is Annie Ernaux different from other writers according to Anders Olsson
A.She suffered a lot of hardships.
B.Her works are short and moving.

Humanities departments (人文院系) in America are once again being cut down. Earlier this month, the State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook announced a plan to abandon several of the college's well-known departments for lack of fund. The University of Pittsburgh has cut its German and Classics. 1. In the UK, Middlesex University decided to gradually get rid of philosophy department. In June 2015, the Japanese minister of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology sent a letter to the presidents of the national universities of Japan, suggesting they close their graduate and undergraduate departments in the humanities and social sciences and focus on something more practical.
These are hard times. Instead of Shakespeare or French, there will be (perhaps there already are) college classes in how to cut corporate spending. 2. But the only opportunity has been lost if they are denied the opportunity to study foreign languages, the classics, literature, philosophy, music, theater and art in the university. When else in their busy lives will they get that chance
3. Essays explain why we need these subjects, and what their loss will mean. These areas of learning provide us with the ability to think critically and independently; to see both sides of an issue;to look beneath the surface of what we are being told; to appreciate the ways in which language can help us understand one another more clearly.
I don't believe that the humanities can make you a decent person. 4. Studying philosophy teaches us about those who have gone before us. A foreign language brings us closer to those with whom we share the planet. The humanities touch those aspects of awareness that we call intellect and heart. 5.
A.These subjects are under attack.
B.Students need practical skills to find jobs.
C.Defenses of the humanities have appeared.
D.This problem has also arisen internationally.
E.Therefore, courses in the humanities are beneficial.
F.It helps us learn how to think and live in a harmonious society.
G.But they can expand our sense of what humans can accomplish and create.

A
根据第一段中的“The exhibition is Tom's largest one to date and includes affordable art. The interactive show is made up of drawings, paintings, sculptures and live performances.(这次展览是汤姆迄今为止最大的一次展览,其中包括价格合理的艺术品。 take on为固定短语,意为“呈现”;a variety of为固定搭配,意为“各种各样的”。A.
根据第二段中的“His wall painting has a special theme, portrayed by doves. As well as his anti-war standpoint, he is doing something meaningful. Tom is a founding member of a tree planting project called Trees Please. The group has distributed 10,000 trees in about four years across Ireland.(他的壁画有一个特别的主题:画的是鸽子。
根据第四段中的“He also sings and has an online channel featuring his songs, which are very improvised. All this creativity is a lifeline for him, who believes that art is a necessity rather than a luxury.(他还唱歌,并且有一个在线频道专门播放他非常即兴创作的歌曲。 此题可采用排除法:B项(艺术是奢侈品)与文中的表述“who believes that art is a necessity rather than a luxury”不符;C项(艺术无边界)与此部分内容无关;D项(他很受公众欢迎)没有提到。故选A。

根据第一段中的“In the words of the Nobel Committee, Ernaux was given the award for the courage and amazing insight of her writing.(用诺贝尔委员会的话说,Ernaux因其写作的勇气和惊人的洞察力而获奖。)”
根据第四段中的“Her upbringing features heavily in her novels, as well as her experiences navigating adolescence and adulthood.(她的教养以及她应对青春期和成年期的经历在她的小说中占重要地位。)”
根据“Though the matters...they are always written in a plain language.(虽然Ernaux在她的书中描述的事情是严肃的,有时甚至是沉重的,但它们总是用朴素的语言写的。)”和“Ernaux described her style as ‘flat writing’ through which she aims to tell her stories objectively.
  D项中的objective与第五段中的“tell her stories objectively”为同义表达,D项中的“easy to understand”与第五段中的“written in a plain language”和“flat writing”为同义表达。
A项中的relaxing与文中的“serious and even sometimes heavy”不符。B项中的Descriptive 和C项中的Emotional与文中的“Unshaped by florid description or overwhelming emotions”相冲突。
根据最后一段中的“She writes about things that no one else writes about, for instance her jealousy, her experiences as an abandoned lover and so forth.
最后一段末尾提到“They are short books, but they are really moving.”,所以B项中的“short and moving”的确是Ernaux的作品的特色。但题干问的是与其他作家的不同之处,回答这一问题的只能是“She writes about things that no one else writes about”,“no one else”突出区别。

B项“学生需要实用技能来找工作”符合语境,且B项中的“practical skills”对应空前的“how to cut corporate spending”,故选B。
空后的“Essays explain why we need these subjects, and what their loss will mean.”
G项中的But是关键词,说明前后的逻辑关系;G项中的they指代前文中的the humanities;空后的三句是对G项中“they can expand our sense of what humans can accomplish and create”的具体解释。

故选A。
根据“the man finally couldn't contain his emotions”可知,此处是指法里斯喜极而泣。
根据上文“the buyers begin to see the homeless”和下文“They mention that they tend to connect and develop friendship with someone they might have otherwise”可知,此处是指买家开始以不同的方式看待无家可归者。
