Tired of the busy and chaotic life in Las Vegas, Nevada for nearly ten years, my family and I decided to slow things down. We wanted to lead an environmentally-friendly life.
None of us felt that this could be accomplished where we were living and we all agreed that a move to the country would be great for everyone.
Before long we set about looking for a home in Yucca, Arizona, a very small town of less than 1,000 people. When I called to inquire about the property, I was informed that there was no electricity available in the area. What No electricity I almost denied the idea immediately. But what better way is there to go green After giving it a second thought, we decided to put in an offer and moved in on Thanksgiving Day.
When we first moved to the property, we did some remodeling (改造) and stayed in our motor home. We were faced with real challenges at the time, which just made us work harder. We slowly got things fixed and moved into the house after 38 days.
While living here for the past four months has been a big adjustment, there are many benefits of living off the grid (输电网). I think one of the most educational lessons is teaching my kids the importance of conservation. They used to take water, power and gas for granted. We started taking quicker showers, turning off the water while brushing our teeth. What's more, we are also trying to make other changes which include reducing the amount of trash we generate by recycling, growing our own organic vegetables and repurposing things that we would normally throw.
Overall, going off the grid has been great for our family. I hope that once my kids move out of the house, they will keep the habits that they have learned by living off the grid.

C.The skills of classifying trash.
D.The techniques of cooking vegetables.
27.What can be inferred from the text

B.A family has managed to live a simple life.
C.A green lifestyle has sprung up nationwide.
D.Getting off the grid made no difference to people.

A recent New York Times opinion piece by Daniel Willingham addressed the question of whether listening to a book is the same as reading it. Willingham begins the piece with a frequently asked question—Is it cheating if I listen to an audiobook for my book club
Willingham argues that they're both worthwhile but is careful to note that that doesn't mean they have the same value. In line with his points in the article, I listen to audiobooks when I wouldn't otherwise be engaged in a book—say, at the gym or while walking. That's certainly an advantage of listening over reading. But I was surprised to find that Willingham didn't mention what I consider to be the biggest difference between the two: engagement.
The critical difference, for me, between reading and listening is that reading is something you do, while listening is something that happens to you. Reading is an act of engagement. The words on the page aren't going to read themselves, which is something they literally do in an audiobook. If you're not actively taking in written information, then you're not going to make progress on the book. Audiobooks, on the other hand, make progress with or without your participation.
Willingham refers to this point by saying that harder books—“difficult texts” as he calls them—require more engagement, which is thus better suited to reading. Yet it's not necessarily true. For example, I've recently been listening to David Graeber's excellent Debt: The First 5000 Years, a tough read with lots of information and arguments. While I haven't grasped every piece of information that he's presented, I have spent a lot more time thinking about an important topic than I otherwise would. This fill-in-the-cracks nature of audiobooks is a critical advantage.
Ultimately, it's fair to consider audiobooks and written texts as the fundamentally different media. They are different forms based on the same work. Your option depends on what you are willing to give to it (time, above all) and what you hope to get out of it.
28.What is an advantage of audiobooks according to Willingham
A.Cutting down on one's reading time.
B.Increasing absorption in knowledge.
C.Providing more flexible access to information.
D.Encouraging further thinking on serious topics.
29.What does the writer think of reading
A.It helps the general idea to stand out.
B.It suits people working on difficult texts.
C.It speeds up readers' progress on the book.
D.It requires more participation from readers.
30.Why does the writer mention Debt: The First 5000 Years
A.To demonstrate what makes a tough read.
B.To show why audiobooks attract listeners.
C.To prove that audiobooks also suit hard texts.
D.To stress that reading can also take huge effort.
31.What can we learn about texts and audiobooks from the last paragraph
A.They involve similar efforts.
B.They prove equally demanding.
C.They have distinct user groups.
D.They serve different purposes.

New research has discovered that adult howler monkeys use play to avoid conflict and reduce group tension, with levels of play increasing when they are faced with limited resources.
Howler monkey play involves individuals hanging from their tails(尾巴) and making facial expressions and signals, such as shaking their heads. However, play is an energy-costly activity for howler monkeys, who generally have an inactive lifestyle due to their mainly leaf-based diet.
The researchers examined how play varies with age, and they measured the amount of time adults play with other adults and with juveniles within their groups. By studying seven different groups of howler monkeys in the rain forests of Mexico and Costa Rica, the researchers found that the amount of adult play is linked to the number of potential playmates, increasing in line with the size of the group. Adults spend more time playing with other adults, rather than juveniles, and adult females spend more time being engaged in play than adult males.
Crucially, the researchers found that play among adults increases in line with time spent searching for fruit. Howler monkeys typically eat leaves, and fruit is a highly prized resource that generates competition among the monkeys. Lead author Dr. Norberto Asensio, of University of the Basque Country, said, “One theory for the positive effect of fruit consumption on play is that a fruit-based diet simply provides the howler monkeys with more energy compared to their typical diet of leaves.”
“If this was the case, we should have observed adults engaging in more play with other adults of the group, instead of young monkeys during fruit searching. Because young monkeys do not pose a threat or provide competition at fruit trees, we believe that play among adults is a method for solving conflicts within the group, in a similar way that grooming (梳理毛发) is used by some other animals.”
32.What was the focus of the researchers' observation
A.What food the monkeys eat.
B.What influence the monkeys' play.
C.How long the monkeys stay together.
D.How big the monkeys' play groups are.
33.What does the underlined word “juveniles” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.Young animals. B.Foreign groups.
C.Team leaders. D.Family members.
34.What do we know about howler monkeys according to Norberto Asensio
A.They love grooming.
B.They prefer leaves to fruits.
C.Young monkeys are not competitive.
D.Adult monkeys don't care about the young.
35.What can be the best title of the text
A.Fruits—the crucial source of energy
B.Howler monkeys—a special group living with peace
C.Monkey play—an important means of harmony
D.Conflicts—unavoidable problems among monkeys

Kindness of Strangers
We rely on a community where helping others is highly appreciated. When we need help, it creates a web that ties us together.
Once upon a time, I was in the kitchen getting dinner ready when my fourteen-year-old daughter, Cassandra, called me from her room. “Mom, can you help me get downstairs ” She had lung disease and depended on oxygen twenty-four hours a day, so it was impossible for her to move up and down the stairs without help. I turned down the stove and ran upstairs to her room. Cassandra let out a sigh and closed her eyes. “Mom, I wish it wasn't so hard for me to climb the stairs.”
“I know, honey. We'll try to solve the problem.”
My daughter's words reminded me of an incident. A month earlier, a company introduced an electric stairlift (座椅电梯) to us. My daughter could use this stairlift to go up and down stairs by herself without anyone helping her. Hearing the perfect product, our whole family was very excited and looking forward to it. The stairlift sounded wonderful because it would greatly improve my daughter's life. Unluckily, we couldn't afford it though John, my husband, even took two jobs to support the family.
To carry out Cassandra's wish, I got round to ask the charity organization in our community for help once again. They had lent us a wheelchair before we bought one. Maybe they could help with a stairlift, too. I held my breath while the phone rang. “Do you have a stairlift I could borrow ” I asked them hopefully. However, they hadn't, but they promised to call us right away if they got one.
Hanging up the phone, I told this to my family anxiously.
One early morning, we heard someone knocking at the door.

①根据题干中的关键词Debt: The First 5000 Years定位到第四段。
②以该书为例是为了论证上文的论点,即根据“Willingham refers to this point by saying that harder books—‘difficult texts’ as he calls them—require more engagement, which is thus better suited to reading. Yet it's not necessarily true.”
根据最后一段中的“Your option depends on what you are willing to give to it (time, above all) and what you hope to get out of it.[你的选择取决于你愿意为它付出什么(时间,最重要的是)以及你希望从中得到什么]”可知,选择纸质书还是选择有声书取决于读者希望从中获取什么,由此可推知,纸质书和有声书契合不同的目的,故选D。

The researchers examined how play varies with age可知,研究人员关注的是影响吼猴玩耍的各方面因素,如吼猴的年龄等。
The researchers examined how play varies with age可知,本段说明研究者们调查了年龄与吼猴玩耍之间的关系,结合画线词前的“they measured the amount of time adults play with other adults(他们测量了成年猴子与其他成年猴子一起玩耍的时间)”可知,下文应该说明成年猴子和不同年龄的猴子玩耍的时间,即成年猴子和年幼的猴子玩耍的时间,从而形成比较。故画线词与A项Young animals(年幼的动物)为同义词。故选A。
(1)定义猜词,根据定义信息和举例猜测词义。如文中常用refer to、be called、that's to say、such as等;
(2)逻辑猜词,根据同义词、反义词、因果关系词等猜测词义,例如similarly、the same as、but、however、while、on the other hand、since、because等,所猜词与这些提示词前/后面部分的含义一样、相反或是前因后果、前果后因;
(3)语法猜词,根据构词法和句式结构,再结合上下文猜词;
(4)语境猜词,通过上下文提供的情景和线索进行合理分析,还要关注所在段落语境;
②根据本段第一句中的“adults engaging in more play with other adults of the group, instead of young monkeys during fruit searching...or provide competition”可知,成年猴子更积极地参与到群体游戏中去寻找水果,相比之下,小猴子们显得不那么积极,因为小猴子在寻找水果时不会构成威胁或竞争。
Monkey play—an important means of harmony(猴子玩耍——和谐的重要手段)为最佳标题。
Because young monkeys do not pose a threat or provide competition at fruit trees, we believe that play among adults is a method for solving conflicts within the group, in a similar way that grooming is used by some other animals.

38.A 主旨句。 故选A。
(1)递进关系,如also, besides, in addition...
(2)并列关系,如first, second, next, then, meanwhile...
(3)转折关系,如but, yet, however, nevertheless...
(4)对比关系,如on the contrary, by contrast, by comparison...
(5)因果关系,如so, therefore, thus, as a result, consequently...
(6)条件关系,如if, unless, as long as...
(7)例证关系,如for example, such as, like...

42.A 根据后文as one of those who are interested in culture and emotion以及saying I was one of the world's experts可知,作者自我介绍时把自己称为对文化和情感感兴趣的人,而教授却说作者是专家,由此可知,作者自我介绍时非常谦虚。

51.B 根据后文but instead made me uncomfortable可知,空处表达内容应和uncomfortable相反,教授的本意是想让作者感觉良好。

total总计,in total意为“总共”;advance进步,in advance意为“提前”;detail细节,in detail意为“详细地”。

故填with。

Looking at my daughter, I patted her head and said, “Things are going to be fine, honey. The community will help us find a stairlift. All we can do is wait. If they don't find one, we'll work hard and save up to buy you one.” Hearing this, my daughter's eyes were filled with hope again, and said gently, “Thank you, Mom.”
One early morning, we heard someone knocking at the door. I opened the door and found a couple of community staff standing there, wearing a smile on their face. We greeted each other and the community workers said they had found a stairlift, which was donated by the previous company.
