This year, science fiction lovers in China have reason to feel inspired by Chinese writer Hai Ya, whose book The Space-Time Painter won the Hugo Award (雨果奖) on Saturday, October 21. Besides, he is the third Chinese writer to win a Hugo award after Liu Cixin in 2015 and Hao Jingfang in 2016.
Hai Ya has also impressed (给……留下深刻印象) the world with his work standard. It is reported that after the awards ceremony in Chengdu he flew back to Shenzhen next night. So he would not miss work on Monday morning. In fact, he works as a manager in a bank.
Rather than being a full-time writer, Hai Ya treats writing as a part-time activity to be taken up whenever he is not doing his job. That encourages more young writers. Not everyone could be a “writer”, but now more and more people are following their dreams to become writers.
In fact, Liu Cixin, who won the Hugo Award for The Three-body Problem, is also a part-time writer, holding an engineering job. He encourages young people to keep their jobs and write if they have dreams.
Their stories go to show that holding a job should not stop people from following their dreams of writing. If you want to write a story, you can get up early or sleep late to write about three hours every day. And having a job will actually provide you with enough material to write about, while the salary(工资) can make a living. Because not every writer makes enough money from writing.
The key is to find the balance (平衡) between the eight hours’ working time and three hours’writing time in the early morning or late at night. And remember—never give up.

A.Working in different places. B.Making more money to support writing.
C.Finding enough material to write about. D.Balancing the working time and the writing time.

Every year thousands of students leave school for a few weeks or months and enjoy an unusual type of educational program. What they learn during this time does not come from books. Although they may look well, they are often in poor health and don’t have enough food to eat.
One center in Thailand cares for these elephants. It provides a safe and natural living space for them. When they are at the center, they stay in a building but are free to walk around. Students come from all over the world to help there. The students work with the elephant keepers and help them train elephants. These keepers teach the students how to care for the elephants. In the morning, they go to the forest together and lead the elephants to the center. They clean them and give them food. In the afternoon, they take the animals back into the forest for the night. Helping at the center is interesting and the young people learn a lot.

Are you an “I person” or an “E person” 31 They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. “I” and “E” refer to “introverted” (内向) and “extroverted” (外向).
32 For example, when an introverted person is with a group of extroverted friends, he might become more social like an “E” person.
According to scientists, this idea of temporarily (临时地) changing personalities is called “masking”. 33 “Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people-pleasers to do so,” wrote the Master Class website.
Using the MBTI result to describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan. I thought of an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’. ” “Why ” she asked back. “Must I follow what my personality test tells me to do ” 34
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is—for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. 35

I have changed a lot in the past few years.
First, changes have taken place in my appearance. I used to be short but now I’ve grown tall. In character, I used to be really shy and quiet, even scared to talk in public. But now, I’ve become much more outgoing and confident. I am willing to take part in class activities and express my opinions bravely. My hobbies have changed too. I used to like playing games but now reading has become my favorite.
My biggest change is that I make plans now. I used to leave my tasks till the last minute. This often led to poor grades. But now I’m in the habit of planning for everything. This change has not only helped improve my grades but also made me more organized.
All in all, I’m happy with my changes and I’ll keep growing and improving in the future.
