My daughter, Nodam, came to stay with me a month ago because she was pregnant with twins, and wanted to be near the health centre. At 9 pm on April 27, just as Nodam was about to cook the evening meal, she felt a very sharp pain. And then she began to bleed heavily.”
Seitat is a traditional birth helper, who has helped many women. “I have been taught the importance of referring women to the health centre so they can be attended by skilled workers. I immediately sent some young boys to look for a vehicle to take my daughter there. They found that one vehicle had broken down, so they went looking for another. Meanwhile, she called her neighbour to see if he could help. “He is a strong man. He tried to cany my daughter in his shawl but she was too heavy. Soon it was soaked in blood. At 10 pm, one hour after the pain started, she died. I was shocked and painful. It all happened too fast. The babies died too.”
Now Seitat is left with Nodam's two other children to look after. “Nodam had done everything right”, she says. “She had attended the ante-natal clinic regularly, and she moved here so that she could give birth at the health centre. A few days before New Year 1944, Patricia Krueger received a telegram from the U. S. Army. She hoped it would contain a belated birthday greeting from her husband, an army flight engineer, Charles Krueger, whom she had not heard from for 2 weeks. Instead, the message said he wasn’t coming home: His B-29 had been lost and he was later declared MIA (missing in action). Their son, John Krueger from Middleton, Wisconsin, is still in tears when he recounts this story.
Decades later, the military continues to work to bring back the remains of soldiers like Charles Krueger. The job of finding them falls to DPAA (Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency), created in 2015 after critics charged that the previous MIA search process was slow, and behind on innovations in science and technology. Between 1973 and 2014, the remains of only 1,849 missing service member s were returned to their families; in 2021, the agency accounted for the remains of 141 MIAs; according to DPAA figures.
To accelerate the work, Congress gave DPAA the authority to develop public-private partnerships with scientists and groups outside the government. “Teaming up with academic scientists introduces new ways of thinking,” says military historian Michael Dolski. “Working with partners allows us to tap into their technologies and capabilities in ways that we just can’t maintain.”
For scientists, the work is more than technically satisfying. “It’s the most rewarding aspect of my career,” says Mires, a scientist working with the agency. “In other archaeology sites I’ve worked on, the history is remote,” he says. “Here, you’re doing something not for a thing, but for a person, and all the people they touched.”
27.What was the telegram about in paragraph 1
A.A New Year dinner. B.Krueger’s disappearance.
C.A birthday greeting. D.John Krueger’s memory.
28.Why did people criticize the previous MIA search process

C.Because the work was stopped by the military.
D.Because 141 MIAs’ remains were found in 2021.
29.What is Michael Dolski’s attitude to the cooperation with scientists and groups
A.Patient. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.

Would you know what to do if a fire started in your home Take the time now to review the following safety tips, and your family will be prepared in time of a fire in your home:

An escape plan can help every member of a family get out of a burning house. The idea is to get outside quickly and safely. 32 So it is important to learn and remember the different ways out of your home.
Stay low
If you can see smoke in the house, stay low to the ground as you make your way to the exit. 33 You will breathe less smoke if you stay to the ground. Smoke naturally rises, so if there is smoke while you are using your escape route, staying low means you can crawl (爬) under most of it.
What if you can’t get out right away
If you can’t get out fast because fire or smoke is stopping an escape route, you will want to yell for help. You can do this from an open window or call 911 if you have a phone with you. 34 Then, firefighters will have a hard time finding you. The sooner they find you, the sooner you both can get out.
If your clothes catch fire, what should you do
Your clothes could catch fire during a fire or by accident if you step too close to a candle. If this happens, don’t run! Instead, stop, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands, and roll. This will cut off the air and put out the flames. 35

30.主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“Decades later, the military continues to work to bring back the remains of soldiers like Charles Krueger. The job of finding them falls to DPAA (Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency), created in 2015 after critics charged that the previous MIA search process was slow, and behind on innovations in science and technology.(几十年后,军方继续努力将查尔斯·克鲁格(Charles Krueger)等士兵的遗体带回来。寻找这些人的工作落在了国防部战俘/失踪人员会计局(DPAA)身上,该机构于2015年成立,此前批评人士指责之前的失踪人员搜索过程缓慢,落后于科技创新。)”可知,几十年后,军方仍在努力找回像 Charles Krueger 这样的士兵的遗骸,批评人士指责之前的失踪人员搜寻过程缓慢,缺乏科学技术创新,根据第三段中的“To accelerate the work, Congress gave DPAA the authority to develop public-private partnerships with scientists and groups outside the government.(为了加快这项工作,国会授权DPAA与政府以外的科学家和团体建立公私合作伙伴关系。)” 故选A项。

二、阅读单选(本大题共4小题)
Born in Brussels in 1916, Andrée de Jongh was nicknamed Little Cyclone early on by her father. Just 24 in 1940 when the Germans invaded, de Jongh was a commercial artist who packed up and volunteered with the Red Cross, and then joined the Resistance, risking everything to save Allied pilots and crew members shot down by the Germans and trapped behind enemy lines.
De Jongh found these men, and she hid them and fed them. And with her family’s and other resisters’ help, she got them clothes and identity papers. Then she led them on a 1,000 mile escape route through occupied Belgium and France into neutral Spain.
The route was called the Comet line, and this girl inspired not just the men she saved but also the men who heard about her.
The value of what she was doing went beyond the individuals she was saving. She gave hope to air crews in England before they took off.
Some 800 Allied troops and airmen survived the war because of Andrée de Jongh. Known as Dédée by those she rescued, she personally led 118 people over the mountains and into Spain. But the price she and all the other unknown heroes paid was enormous.
In January 1943, de Jongh was caught, and then sent to a concentration camp. Her father was caught and then shot to death. Her sister and her mother were imprisoned. Despite all the arrests and killings, the Comet line continued to be an escape route, right up until the Allies invaded Normandy.
Who we are as a nation, what we are, every freedom we have and celebrate this weekend, and all of our bounty, have been paid for by people like Andrée de Jongh—brave, good, caring and mostly forgotten people.

I fell in love with rhinos when I worked in a zoo in the 80s, and spent much of the next 20 years as the keeper of the largest captive (圈养的) group of rare black rhinos
There’s a popular misconception that rhinos are aggressive and stupid, but I found them sensitive and affectionate animals. Weighing over a ton, black rhinos are unexpectedly agile (敏捷的) and have an unpredictable nature—but, given reassurance, they tend to believe people. In the past few decades, their numbers have dropped dramatically. In recent years, I’ve helped look after rhinos being moved to the reserve so they can form new populations in countries that have few left. Last year, I helped on a project to fly five black rhinos from a private reserve in South Africa to the Serengeti National Park. Once there, the animals had to be kept captive for a few weeks to adapt to the new environment, in which time they lived in “bomas”—wooden enclosures with “bedrooms”, designed to create a calm space.
A couple of weeks before their planned release, the sky was filled with smoke. Watching the flames rushing through the bush toward the bomas, I froze. Terrified that it would catch fire, my instinct was to release the rhinos, but they hadn’t yet been fitted with transmitters (发信器). If I let them out into a bushfire and they were injured, we’d have great difficulty tracking them down. So I dashed back to the bomas and called the rhinos to the bedrooms. Sensing the tear in my voices, they moved without hesitation and remained astonishingly calm. It was crucial the rhinos didn’t panic—they can easily hurt each other if they do.
Meanwhile, the rangers managed to beat the closest flames away. At last, after half an hour, the wind changed direction and the fire began to recede. That we and the rhinos had escaped uninjured was a miracle. The teamwork of everybody there played a large part, and the rhinos were very much a part of that team. The relationships we’d built with them had proved crucial—had they or we panicked, all our work would have been in vain. Instead, two weeks later, they were released into the wild, ready to found part of a new population in the Serengeti.
20.What kind of animals does the author think rhinos are
A.Unfriendly. B.Cruel. C.Mild. D.Curious.

A.To assist rhinos to settle in. B.To boost tourism in the reserve.
C.To avoid rhinos’ aggressive behavior. D.To stop rhinos from fleeing.
22.Why didn’t the author let the rhinos out in the bushfire
A.They would panic and hurt each other. B.It could be difficult to locate and find them.
C.They showed signs of anger and aggression. D.They might fail to adapt to new environments.
23.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.Why protecting rhinos is important B.How the rhinos were released to the wild.
C.What enabled the rhinos to remain calm. D.What helped the rhinos and people escape.

EAST ORANGE,N.J.(CBS New York)—A third grader who knew what to do in an emergency and took action is being credited with saving a life at school.
Kori Scott, 9,was honored Thursday by the mayor of East Orange,New Jersey for her quick-thinking and bravery when a friend began choking in the lunchroom about two weeks ago.
“I could just tell, because when I saw her starting to swallow, she stopped and started pounding on the table,” she told CBS2’s Clark Fouraker.Scott said her friend was eating a burrito and left the cafeteria at Bowser Elementary looking for water.“I started following her and when I came out,she was holding onto a rail,” she said.
It would be an urgent situation for anyone, but Scott remembered something important as she left the lunchroom—her friend would not be able to take a drink of water, because she was choking.“I knew if she was holding onto the railing and she went to lean her head over, she would have hit her head and she would have passed out,” she said.“So I pulled her over, did the Heimlich manoeuvre—one, two, three. But I did it one more time to make sure that she wasn’t choking.”
“I picked her up from school. The teacher came out near to tears and she was like ‘Kori did an exceptional job,an amazing job today.’ And I was like,‘What?’ She said,‘She saved a life.’” Scott’s mother,Kiana, said.Scott learned to do the Heimlich after her father performed it on her when she was three.
“Kori’s smart instincts(直觉) and quick action are the characteristics of a true hero,” said Mayor Ted Green. For her bravery, the mayor is making Scott “Mayor-For-The-Day” on Friday.

We have long been told that using mobile phones on airplanes could be dangerous. “It could interfere with the plane’s communication network,” flight staff might say. What they really mean could be: “If you don’t put your phone away then you alone will be responsible for crashing this plane.”
Well, as it turns out, this might not be true after all.
New guidelines, sent out last month by The European Aviation Safety Agency, said that electronic devices do not cause a safety risk during flights. It means that iPod lovers and mobile phone chatterboxes (话匣子) can enjoy their devices on planes, as long as the airline choose to allow them.
It is not only Europe that has made a U-turn on the rule. Earlier this year, some US and Canadian airlines lifted their restrictions but said that all devices must be kept in “airplane mode”.
There have been many studies into the safety of electronic devices on flights and the results are often different. One study in 2003 found that the electromagnetic (电磁的) radio transmitters (发送器) in some personal devices could affect the basic functions of the cockpit, such as GPS (global position system), which ensure safe landings. However, the report also said that there is no evidence of this being the cause of an accident so far.
Some will be happy with the new rules. They will look forward to proper arrival times and no more waiting around at airports. They will also look forward to no more missed calls, piles of text messages, or wondering what’s happened.
Others won’t be so happy. If you happen to be seated next to a chatterbox, say goodbye to sleep and hello to boring “I’m on a plane” conversations.
But you don’t need to worry so soon. Unless you have a satellite phone, there’s no signal at 33,000ft (10 km). Since calls can be made through Wi-Fi, airlines will have to install Wi-Fi so that passengers can start sending texts and making calls.
And until they do so, flights remain one of the only safe places to hide from the world of endless e-mails and phone calls.
28.The author intends to by the first two paragraphs.
A.To warn readers not to use mobile phones. B.To tell some unwanted experiences.
C.To emphasize a safety risk during flights. D.To introduce the topic of the article.
29.What can we know about the study in 2003
A.The use of electronic devices during flights has turned out to be safe.
B.Airlines should make sure that all devices must be kept in “airplane mode”.
C.No accidents have been proven to be caused by using electronic devices on flights.
D.Using personal electronic devices has no effect on the basic functions of the cockpit.
30.Why does the author say “But you don’t need to worry so soon” in paragraph 8
A.Because it’s not a good idea to always worry about daily life.
B.Because now passengers can’t make calls in the sky without signals.
C.Because airlines will have to install Wi-Fi on airplanes very soon.
D.Because flights can still help you escape from reality at present.
31.What is the author’s attitude to using phones during flights
A.Objective. B.Supportive. C.Critical. D.Doubtful.

31.
推理判断题。根据第六段中“Some will be happy with the new rules.(有些人会对新规定感到高兴)”及第七段中“Others won’t be so happy.(其他人不会这么高兴)”可知,本文各方观点都有陈述,末段“And until they do so, flights remain one of the only safe places to hide from the world of endless e-mails and phone calls.(在他们做到这一点之前,飞机仍然是唯一安全的地方,可以躲避无尽的电子邮件和电话)”又提到目前还做不到在飞机上打电话,所以作者对这一讨论话题的态度是客观的,故选A项。

Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10, couldn’t agree. Were the birds out on the ice ducks or geese So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends ventured (冒险) onto the frozen pond near their homes in Frankfort, Illinois, to get a better look. First, they threw a rock onto the ice to test it, Cruz told NBC 5 Chicago. “Then we stepped on it.” Convinced the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, but then he fell through the seemingly frozen surface.
Cruz rushed to help his panicked friend. However, the pond swallowed him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the extremely cold water and onto a more solid section. He then gingerly worked his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn’t hold, and he fell in again. This ime, he couldn’t get out.
The boys were up to their necks in icy water and quickly losing feeling. Any chance of their freeing themselves was slipping away. Cruz was sure that he was going to die.
Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started screaming, wishing someone to save them.
John Lavin, a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the grocery store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys, he grabbed (抓住) a nearby buoy (救生圈), kicked off his shoes, and ran into the cold water, struggling his way through the ice. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and pulled them back to land.
The boys were taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered that their five- minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees. Fortunately, they have fully recovered, though they are still a little amazed by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” says Cruz, “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”

C.Their shoes along the nearby pond. D.Their neighbors’ pulling them back.
25.Which of the following words can best describe John Lavin
A.Hard-working and helpful. B.Warm-hearted and courageous.

I fell in love with rhinos when I worked in a zoo in the 80s, and spent much of the next 20 years as the keeper of the largest captive (圈养的) group of rare black rhinos

I’m writing to share with you how I saved my best friend Lily yesterday. We were having lunch when suddenly she was choked and couldn’t breathe normally. Panicked at first, I quickly calmed myself and recalled the Heimlich manoeuvre we’d just learned in our class.
I rushed behind her, wrapped my arms around her waist, made a fist with one hand and placed it right above her stomach. Then, I grasped my fist with my other hand and gave a force. Thankfully, after a few tries, the piece of food flew out and Lily could breathe again.

26.What was the telegram about in paragraph 1
A.A New Year dinner. B.Krueger’s disappearance.
C.A birthday greeting. D.John Krueger’s memory.
27.Why did people criticize the previous MIA search process
A.Because DPAA wants to continue the search.
B.Because it took long and lacked creativeness.
C.Because the work was stopped by the military.
D.Because 141 MIAs’ remains were found in 2021.
28.What is Michael Dolski’s attitude to the cooperation with scientists and groups
A.Patient. B.Critical. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.
29.What is a suitable title for the text

Their son, John Krueger from Middleton, Wisconsin, is still in tears when he recounts this story.(相反,这条信息说他不会回家了:他的B-29已经失踪,后来他被宣布失踪(MIA)。
根据第二段中的“The job of finding them falls to DPAA (Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency), created in 2015 after critics charged that the previous MIA search process was slow, and behind on innovations in science and technology.(寻找这些人的工作落在了国防部战俘/失踪人员会计局(DPAA)身上,该机构于2015年成立,此前批评人士指责之前的失踪人员搜索过程缓慢,落后于科技创新。)”
根据第三段中的““Teaming up with academic scientists introduces new ways of thinking,” says military historian Michael Dolski. “Working with partners allows us to tap into their technologies and capabilities in ways that we just can’t maintain.”(“与学术科学家合作,引入了新的思维方式。”,军事历史学家Michael Dolski说,“与合作伙伴合作能够使我们以我们不能维持的方式利用他们的技术和能力。”)”可知,Michael Dolski认为,与学术科学家合作引入了新的思维方式,与合作伙伴一起工作使我们能够利用他们的技术和能力,由此可推知,Michael Dolski 对与科学家和团体的合作持支持态度。故选 D 项。
29.主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“Decades later, the military continues to work to bring back the remains of soldiers like Charles Krueger.

“With faithfulness,I will try my best to aid the physicians in their work, and devote myself to helping those patients who I attend to.”Every day, nurses take these words from the Florence Nightingale oath(誓言) to heart, ensuring their patients’ welfare—but some nurses, like Jennifer Smith, take that oath a step further.
Last November,Jennifer got an urgent call from John Burley, one of her patients who had been hospitalized with pneumonia(肺炎).With no other family members to step in to help,a local animal shelter adopted his dog Boomer.
“I came into work on Monday morning after Thanksgiving, the phone ringing at 7 am,” Jennifer recalled.“John was calling from his ward, saying ‘Boomer was in the shelter! Boomer was in the shelter!’” Aware that the 12-year-old dog that he had had since it was born meant all the world to him,she said yes without any hesitation, when John asked Jennifer if she could take care of Boomer. She said that knowing his beloved dog was safe would make a huge positive impact on John’s recovery.
The first thing Jennifer had to do was to track Boomer down and she finally found him at the Rome Humane Society. The following day,she drove to the shelter and carried out the adoption plan, letting John know Boomer was doing well. What’s more,Jennifer was given the green light to bring Boomer to work with her.During his stay in hospital,Jennifer brought Boomer to visit his owner several times a day.The cute dog soon became a favorite with staff and patients there.

A new research, presented on Monday, suggests that parents who go down slides with their kids are actually making slides even riskier for their little ones.
Led by Dr. Charles Jennissen, a professor at the University of Iowa, the research found that placing children (especially infants and toddlers蹒跚学步的小孩) on adult laps increases the risk of injury to their lower legs, including broken bones.
"I've seen a lot of these injuries all through my career, and I hadn't seen anybody talk about this problem," says Jennissen.
So Jennissen and his colleagues found that about 350,000 children under the age of six were injured on slides in the U.S. from 2002 to 2015. Injuries were most common among kids from 12-23 months of age, and the most common injury was lower leg fractures (骨折).
The researchers found that 94 percent of 600 cases include lower leg injuries. This is important, because that's not how a kid falling off a slide alone would usually get hurt. The fact that so many kids are getting lower leg injuries—and that those injuries seem to get less common as kids get older—suggests something else is at play.
Jennissen thinks that when children are sliding alone, they aren’t going fast enough or carrying enough body weight to hurt themselves. When they’re sitting on an adult’s lap and their foot gets caught, they have the added momentum of an adult body.
"We think a lot of these lower extremity injuries are because they're on the lap," says Jennissen. "We don't know that for sure, because no parents say that. But from my experience, and the data that suggests it, we think almost all of these are kids are on the lap."
Jennissen isn’t arguing that you should never go down the slide with your kid—he agrees that it’s fun and that he’s done it with his own kids—but he thinks adults should realize the risks.
20.What can we learn about the research from the passage
A.Many parents are hurt when going down slides with their kids.
B.More and more adult laps are found hurt in the accidents.
C.The research issue has not yet concerned many people.
D.Many people have discussed the possible reasons for the injuries.
21.The underlined phrase “at play” in Para.5 probably means .
A.paying attention B.taking effect C.solving problems D.making efforts
22.What is Jennissen’s attitude towards parents’ going down slides with kids
A.He supports it. B.He is against it.
C.He doesn’t care about it. D.He is careful about it.
For motorcycle enthusiasts, nothing beats the excitement of riding your motorcycle on the open highway with the wind on your back. With gas prices going up. motorcycles are economical and a much greener way to travel.
Along with the benefits comes the risk of personal injury if an accident occurs. After all, you’re not protected by steel like you are while driving your car. But besides wearing a helmet, the latest safety innovations are personal airbags that you can wear.
Airbags have been protecting people in car accidents for decades. Now, a Swedish company, Mo’cycle, has made jeans that can be filled with air for motorcycle riders. The jeans are designed to offer protection for the rider’s lower body in case of an accident. The airbag jeans look like conventional pants and are reusable. They are made of a special material which is stronger and weighs less than steel. The airbag component is removable and the jeans can be washed, dried, and worn again.
The jeans help to reduce damage from roadways after a fall. The airbags help cushion(缓冲) the rider if he or she falls off the motorcycle. Mo’cycle teamed up with airbag technology company Helite to design and produce the airbags. The airbags are actually built into the jeans and are triggered(触发) in milliseconds if the rider is separated from the vehicle.
This innovative technology is designed to safeguard motorcycle riders by protecting the lower body areas that have not been previously covered, like the riders’ upper legs, the lower waist, and especially the tailbone! According to the company, “It is revolutionary to use airbag technology to protect the lower part of the backbone, because backbone injuries are what disable motorcycle riders.”
Mo’cycle’s airbag jeans are on sale on the company’s crowdfunding campaign along with an airbag vest and a complete protection package. Making the roads safer for motorcyclists is certainly a worthy effort. So the next time you have an urge to ride, make sure you put on protective device before you hit the open road.

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. First aid may save a life or improve certain vital signs including pulse, temperature, a clear airway, and breathing. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim’s condition from worsening and provide relief from pain. First aid must be given as quickly as possible. In the case of seriously injured, a few minutes can make the difference between complete recovery and loss of life.
First aid measures depend upon a victim’s needs and provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal (脊柱的)injury.
Despite the variety of injuries possible, several basic rules of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. The victim, if conscious(有意识的), should be reassured that medical aid has been requested, and ask for permission to provide any first aid. Next, assess(评估)the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness. The victim should be checked for the medical card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for assessing a victim’s condition is known by ABC, which stands for:
A—Airway: Is it open and clear
B—Breathing: Is the person breathing Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
C—Circulation: Is there a pulse Is the person bleeding extremely Check skin color and temperature for additional signs of circulation problems.
27.How can first aid help victims
A.By sending them to the hospital.
B.By providing a surgery for them
C.By avoiding their sudden illnesses or injuries.
D.By preventing their condition from worsening.
28.What does the author want to tell in the second paragraph
A.Providers’ first aid knowledge and skills are very important.
B.Knowing what not to do is more important than other skills.
C.First aid should follow the victims’ words first.
D.A neck injury is a very serious illness.
29.What can we learn about ABC
A.It is a first aid brochure.
B.It is a kind of assessment method.
C.C stands for checking the things of victims.
D.Airway means air environment around victims.

If your clothes catch fire, what should you do

21.
词义猜测题。根据划线句上文“The researchers found that 94 percent of 600 cases include lower leg injuries. This is important, because that's not how a kid falling off a slide alone would usually get hurt. The fact that so many kids are getting lower leg injuries—and that those injuries seem to get less common as kids get older”可知,研究人员发现,600个病例中有94%都有小腿受伤。
