主题活动 对真理的追求
Throughout history scientists have risked their health and their lives in their search for the truth.
Sir Isaac Newton, the seventeenth century scientist, was very smart, but that didn't stop him from doing some pretty stupid things. In his laboratory in Cambridge he often did the strangest experiments.Once he stared at the sun for as long as he could bear, to discover what effect this would have on his sight. He escaped suffering permanent damage, though he had to spend some days in a darkened room before his eyes recovered.
In the 1750s the Swedish chemist Karl Scheele was the first person to find a way to produce phosphorus (磷). He in fact discovered eight more chemical elements including chlorine (氯), though he didn't get any praise for them.He was a very clever scientist, but his one failing was a curious habit of tasting a little of every substance he worked with. This risky practice finally caught up with him, and in 1786 he was found dead in his laboratory surrounded by a large number of dangerous chemicals, any of which might have been responsible for his death.
Eugene Shoemaker was a respected geologist. He spent a large part of his life studying craters on the moon, and how they were formed, and later did research into the comets of the planet Jupiter. In 1997 he and his wife were in the Australian desert where they went every year to search for places where comets might have hit the earth. While driving in the Tanami desert, normally one of the emptiest places in the world, another vehicle crashed into them and Shoemaker was killed on the spot. Some of his ashes were sent to the moon aboard the Lunar Prospector spacecraft and left there — he is the only person who has had this honor.

W: Do you know, Jack Scientists in Antarctica have used a new invention to help them study seabirds closely — a tiny robot on wheels that looks like a baby bird.
M: Yes.I once saw it on TV.The robot is similar to those used in the exploration of the moon.Scientists, working some distance away, controlled every movement the robot made.
W: You're right. It was immediately accepted by seabirds' families as one of them. The adults even sang to it, though to their disappointment, the “baby” didn't reply.
M: That's funny! Scientists are now working on a new model with one important improvement — it will be able to play seabird songs.
(Text 2)
M: People in modern times are much luckier than before.Do you think so
W: Absolutely.Especially when we compare the technology before with the modern technology in our life now.
M: Does your mother use a washing machine or other machines to do her chores
W: Yes, she does. She uses machines to do almost all of the household chores. She never has a maid.
M: Hmm, technology is really helpful, but do you think that robots will replace humans or cause unemployment in the future
W: Well, it is hard to tell.In some cases, robots will take over jobs that are dangerous for human workers.
M: What about teaching machines or machine teachers
W: Machine teachers will be truly useful, but I still guess the role of real teachers is very much needed. As a machine is only a piece of equipment, it has no personal approach in teaching and cannot precisely teach students.
M: I can't agree more.It is generally believed that teaching is as much an art as it is a science.
(Text 3)
W: We're developing a new technology that can detect forest fires as soon as they start.
M: Given how many fires there have been recently, it's something the world desperately needs.
W: Indeed. In 2020 alone, California has had over 8600 fires, losing roughly 4% of the state's trees. The other place where it will be useful is Australia. At the start of the year, there were 50 separate bushfires.
M: So how will your new detection system work
W: We're going to use a new range of satellites which have heat cameras.
M: Don't other satellites have those
W: Yes, but they can only detect a fire the size of a football field. The new one can sense a fire the size of a car.It will give firefighters enough time to stop it before it gets too big.If they get the plane up in time they could stop it dead.
M: If it works, I really hope you get recognition for it.
W: I just want to try and stop trees from burning, and more importantly, protect the poor animals that live in them.
M: I know, we often only consider the human cost, never the animal one.
