Choking happens when an object is stuck in the throat or windpipe blocking the flow of air.In adults, a piece of food is usually to blame.Young children often choke on small objects.Choking is life-threatening.It cuts off oxygen to the brain.Give first aid as quickly as possible if you or someone else is choking.
Watch for these signs of choking:
·One or both hands clutched to the throat
·A look of panic, shock or confusion
·Inability to talk
·Strained or noisy breathing
·Squeaky sounds when trying to breathe
·Cough, which may either be weak or forceful
·Skin, lips and nails that change color turning blue or gray
·Loss of consciousness
If a choking person can cough forcefully, let the person keep coughing.
Coughing might naturally remove the stuck object.
If a person can't cough, talk, cry or laugh forcefully, give first aid to the person.
The American Red Cross recommends the following steps:
·Give five back blows.Stand to the side and just behind a choking adult. For a child, kneel down behind.Place your arm across the person's chest to support the person's body.Bend the person over at the waist to face the ground.Strike five separate times between the person's shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
·Give five abdominal thrusts. If back blows don't remove the stuck object, give five abdominal thrusts (腹部冲击), also known as the Heimlich maneuver.
·Alternate between five blows and five thrusts until the blockage is forced out.
Some sources only teach the abdominal thrust. It's OK not to use back blows if you haven't learned the back-blow technique. Both approaches are acceptable for adults and children older than age 1.
Questions:
1.What may cause an adult's choking

2.Why is choking life-threatening

3.When someone gets choked, what is an urgent need

4.How can you judge whether a person is being choked

5.When do you need to give five back blows and five abdominal thrusts alternatively

W:Henry, I heard you saved your little brother's life last night.Could you tell me what exactly happened
M:Yes, Mrs.Brown.I was in my bedroom playing the guitar with my friend Jason and my three year old brother Mike, when my brother put a piece of a toy in his mouth.
W:When did you notice it
M:I didn't notice until I found he was fighting for breath.
W:What did you do
M:I immediately asked Jason to find my father, who was somewhere near the house. But then I saw Mike was turning purple.
W:You must have been very worried.
M:Certainly. But I knew what I should do.Luckily, I'd learned how to perform first aid skills. Finally, I helped Mike cough up that little thing.
W:You're really great! Without you, your brother might have been in great danger.
M:Yes.When my father finally came, Mike was crying but he was totally fine.
W:Good. Can you share your story a bit later in class today
M:Certainly, Mrs.Brown.
(Text 2)
M:If we happen to see or get involved in a traffic accident, what should we do to save other people's lives Knowing how to act properly can make a big difference.
Here are some rules that we can follow.First, we should stay calm and dial 110 and 120 at once.Second, don't move the injured people.Leave them where they are unless you have learned the first aid.Third, put on some signs to remind other drivers of the accident to avoid any further accidents.Fourth, we need to check the person's breathing. If the person's breathing stops, we should try to make him start his breathing again right away in the mouth to mouth breathing.Last, if a person is bleeding, we need to stop the bleeding by pressing on the wound with a clean cloth. After all the above have been done, we can stay with the person until the police and ambulance arrive. If you can help, give the police and doctors a hand and you will be appreciated for sure.
(Text 3)
M:OK, today I'd like to talk something about first aid.Well, if you burn your hand, you should put it in cool water for at least minutes. If you are using running water, that makes a difference.Maybe 10 minutes is enough. For a fever, well I know people often think they should keep warm, but actually it is important to let your body get cool, so really the best thing is to open the window and let the wind in, or even get in a bath to bring the temperature down. Now the thing about backache is that the ideas have changed. It certainly used to be true in the old days that you had to go to bed and lie down, but of course that's not going to help your muscles. You'll find it even more difficult to move if you don't use them at all, so now we recommend that you keep moving, gently, of course. We don't want you to go and lift heavy boxes or anything like that.

Diana Golden was twelve years old when she had cancer. She was walking home one day after playing in the snow when her right leg simply gave out. Doctors diagnosed the problem as bone cancer. They recommended removing her leg above the knee.
When Diana heard the news, she asked the only first question: “Will I be still able to ski?”
“When the doctors said yes,” she later recalled, “I figured it wouldn't be too bad.”
Losing a leg would cause most children to lose confidence and hope, but Diana refused to dwell_on the negative side.“It is nothing. A body part,” she'd say.
Most of all, Diana was not discouraged. She loved skiing and she had been on skis since the age of four. After the operation, Diana worked hard to get back to the mountain near her home. “I always skied and I intended to keep on skiing. I never doubt that,” she declared. Diana met her goal. She was back on the slopes. With just one leg, Diana made the best of it. In high school, Diana became a member of her school's ski racing team. And in 1979, when she was just sixteen, she joined the US Disabled Ski Team.
After high school, Diana went on to Dartmouth College. Determined not to be left behind, Diana continued her training with the Dartmouth team. “I had one leg, which meant I had to do it differently,” she later explained.
In 1982, Diana entered her first international ski race. She won the World Handicapped Championship in Norway. In 1986, Diana won the Beck International Award given to the best American racer in international skiing. And in 1988, she was named Skiing Magazine's US Skier of the Year.
With her courage and determination, Diana has changed how people look at disabled athletes. “Everyone has some kind of disability,” Diana says. “It's what we do with our abilities that matters.”
In 1990, Diana retired from racing for good.

The traditional Chinese Shaoxing Opera has a long history, but these days it seems that young people don't show much interest in it.
Nowadays, as pop music and online films are popular with the public, Shaoxing Opera is struggling for its survival. The market of the opera is becoming smaller. It remains popular only with the older generation.According to Zhejiang Provincial Cultural Department, the most of fans of Shaoxing Opera, China's second largest traditional opera, are above 40 years old.And many teenagers know nothing about Shaoxing Opera and have never been to the theatre.

The widespread sedentary (久坐不动的) lifestyle has become a problem in America, fueling the rising obesity (肥胖) rate.
Now a new study finds that being surrounded by active friends can help a person living a sedentary lifestyle get more exercise each day.Researchers found that people in social groups where exercise is valued are more likely to be more active themselves.Lonely people are more likely to live sedentary lifestyles without another person around to give them a boost. The findings highlight the idea that the company a person keeps can be a boost to their overall health and direction in life.
Dr Diana Thomas, a professor at a military school and study author, said that the idea for the research came from real life experiences on the campus. Her team had noticed a trend of people becoming more interested in fitness and other activities once arriving at the school. This is not usually the case at other schools and workplaces, where there is no significant impact on fitness.Thomas believed that this trend could be the result of in group social conditioning, where people will take part in activities that others around them are doing.
People whose data were gathered for the study were split into three groups based on their physical activity level — sedentary, moderately active and extremely active.Moderately active folks were the most important for drawing people who are sedentary to become active, and to sustain that activity.Thomas explained that sedentary people would be unlikely to change their behavior when placed in a group of the extremely active, as it would seem unattainable.

C.Social interaction within a group.
D.Competition against other schools.
15.Why are extremely active people less influential according to Dr Thomas
A.They have no appeal for sedentary people.
B.They are unwilling to involve sedentary people.
C.They themselves often fail to sustain exercising.
D.They seem like an example beyond sedentary people.
