If, like me, you’re the kind of person who finds it hard to make decisions, then Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink might just be the book you have been waiting for.Because Blink is all about rapid cognition (认知) — that is, those moments when we make snap judgements, for example, when meeting someone for the first time or looking at something we’re thinking of buying.
He analyses exactly what goes on in our heads when we make split second decisions and compares this to the thought processes involved when we take longer to come to a decision. Interestingly he claims that, “There are lots of situations — particularly at times of high pressure and stress — when fortunately haste does not make waste.”
What makes Blink a really interesting read is the number of stories that Gladwell includes to support his theories. One such story involves doctors in the Emergency Room at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. After being told to change the way of diagnoses, instead of asking for information such as the patient’s age and weight and medical history, they were going to focus only on the patient’s blood pressure. And now Cook County Hospital is one of the best places in the US at diagnosing chest pain.
Of course, there are occasions when we make the wrong conclusion. In his research, Gladwell discovered that almost all the CEOs of the top companies in the US are tall. There is no actual relationship between height and intelligence, but for some reason, corporations overwhelmingly choose tall people for leadership roles. There is something going on in the first few seconds of meeting a tall person which makes us think of that person as an effective leader, which unfortunately stops us from making an informed decision.
All in all, Blink is a fascinating study on an activity that we all do several times a day.Read it and make better decisions.
32.What does the underlined word “snap” in the first paragraph mean?
A.Instant. B.Decisive.
C.Hesitant. D.Important.
33.How were doctors at Cook County Hospital able to make better diagnoses?
A.By obtaining the patients’ medical history.
B.By basing diagnoses on patients’ blood pressure.
C.By abandoning regular ways of diagnosing patients.
D.By inquiring about current health condition of the patients.
34.What does the author suggest by mentioning leadership roles of tall people?
A.Tall people tend to be capable leaders.
B.A person’s height and intelligence are closely related.
C.CEOs of top companies usually draw right conclusions.
D.The first impression of a person can result in bad judgement.
35.What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A.To honor a writer. B.To recommend a book.
C.To introduce a research. D.To explain a phenomenon.

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Luther had moved with his family from New York City to a small town. His new house was very different from the old apartment (公寓).In the city, Luther could hear his neighbours’ voices through the walls, but now his neighbours were a bike ride away.He used to walk to school, but now he was picked up by a yellow school bus.In the new school, Luther felt very lonely.
But one day in March, he was waiting for the bus to go home when his classmates, Josh and Billy, walked over.“Hi, Luther,” Josh said, “have you ever gone camping?”
  Luther hesitated (犹豫),“No ...Why?”
“Well, it’s spring vacation next week.Billy and I were wondering what you are doing.”
The question took Luther by surprise.Back in the city,he would ride skateboards (滑板) or have picnics with his friends on school holidays. But here he didn’t have any real school friends and he had no idea how he would spend his time.
  “I don’t know,” Luther replied.
“See, every year, Billy and I go camping with our families during spring break,”Josh explained.“We go with some other friends.”
“Yeah, I’m coming with my brother,” added Billy, “and my cousin, Paul.”
Luther only had one cousin, Charlie, his favourite relative, who had just arrived from Tennessee to visit their new house.Maybe Luther would spend spring break watching TV with Charlie.
Then Josh asked, “Hey, Luther, want to join us?”
  “It’ll be fun,” Billy added.
This time, Luther didn’t hesitate or take time to think, but answered at once, “Sure.”
“Great!” Billy and Josh exclaimed (惊叫) at exactly the same time.
But on the way home, Luther reconsidered. He had never been camping.Sleeping outside in the dark woods did not sound like fun.In New York City there was always someone nearby to ask for help if he needed it.But out in the wild? What about bears? If a bear came to his tent, where could he go?He couldn’t call 911 or shout for the policemen on the corner who kept the neighbourhood safe.By saying yes so quickly, had he made a mistake?
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
Luther arrived home, and his cousin Charlie opened the door.

Luther’s worries slowly disappeared as he listened to Charlie’s encouraging words.

What started as a way to help a Tasmanian grandfather cut his lawns
has become extremely popular on TikTok.
Steven Ransley has built a tiny village for his 37 pet guinea pigs (豚

(水箱), a well, and a station for cutting wood.
“We needed something to keep the grass down here because it takes
me eight hours to cut it with a machine,” Mr Ransley said.“I
thought,‘Oh well, some guinea pigs.’”
Mr Ransley, who retired (退休) recently, transported about 500
loads of rocks and dirt over four months, and spent another five months
making his special guinea pig village, which he named
GuineaVale. Finally, he enclosed it with a fence (栅栏).

year ago, after being encouraged by his grandkids. The views on his
videos started to reach tens and hundreds of thousands, even millions. It
just kept growing.
Mr Ransley, who lives in Collinsvale, 19 km northwest of
Hobart, spends plenty of time answering questions people leave on his

around in and that even though they are not wild, they are kind of
wild,” he said.“A lot of people are impressed with the village, and
ask me if I’m going to build more, which I am.”

pigs.“Everyone who comes down here just sits. Many people say the
guinea pigs are a source of relaxation because they are so peaceful,” he

decisions, then Malcolm Gladwell’s Blink might just be the book you
have been waiting for.Because Blink is all about rapid cognition (认
知) — that is, those moments when we make snap judgements, for
example, when meeting someone for the first time or looking at
something we’re thinking of buying.
He analyses exactly what goes on in our heads when we make split
second decisions and compares this to the thought processes involved when
we take longer to come to a decision. Interestingly he claims that,
“There are lots of situations — particularly at times of high pressure and
stress — when fortunately haste does not make waste.”
What makes Blink a really interesting read is the number of stories
that Gladwell includes to support his theories. One such story involves
doctors in the Emergency Room at Cook County Hospital in
Chicago. After being told to change the way of diagnoses, instead of
asking for information such as the patient’s age and weight and medical
history, they were going to focus only on the patient’s blood
pressure. And now Cook County Hospital is one of the best places in the
US at diagnosing chest pain.
Of course, there are occasions when we make the wrong
conclusion. In his research, Gladwell discovered that almost all the CEOs
of the top companies in the US are tall. There is no actual relationship
between height and intelligence, but for some reason, corporations
overwhelmingly choose tall people for leadership roles. There is something
going on in the first few seconds of meeting a tall person which makes us
think of that person as an effective leader, which unfortunately stops us
from making an informed decision.
All in all, Blink is a fascinating study on an activity that we all do
several times a day.Read it and make better decisions.

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构
成一篇完整的短文。
Luther had moved with his family from New York City to a small
town. His new house was very different from the old apartment (公
寓).In the city, Luther could hear his neighbours’ voices through the
walls, but now his neighbours were a bike ride away.He used to walk to
school, but now he was picked up by a yellow school bus.In the new
school, Luther felt very lonely.
But one day in March, he was waiting for the bus to go home when
his classmates, Josh and Billy, walked over.“Hi, Luther,” Josh
said, “have you ever gone camping?”
  Luther hesitated (犹豫),“No ...Why?”
“Well, it’s spring vacation next week.Billy and I were
wondering what you are doing.”
The question took Luther by surprise.Back in the city,he would ride
skateboards (滑板) or have picnics with his friends on school
holidays. But here he didn’t have any real school friends and he had no
idea how he would spend his time.
  “I don’t know,” Luther replied.
“See, every year, Billy and I go camping with our families
during spring break,”Josh explained.“We go with some other
friends.”
“Yeah, I’m coming with my brother,” added Billy, “and
my cousin, Paul.”
Luther only had one cousin, Charlie, his favourite relative, who
had just arrived from Tennessee to visit their new house.Maybe Luther
would spend spring break watching TV with Charlie.
Then Josh asked, “Hey, Luther, want to join us?”
  “It’ll be fun,” Billy added.
This time, Luther didn’t hesitate or take time to think, but
answered at once, “Sure.”
“Great!” Billy and Josh exclaimed (惊叫) at exactly the same
time.
But on the way home, Luther reconsidered. He had never been
camping.Sleeping outside in the dark woods did not sound like fun.In
New York City there was always someone nearby to ask for help if he
needed it.But out in the wild? What about bears? If a bear came to his
tent, where could he go?He couldn’t call 911 or shout for the
policemen on the corner who kept the neighbourhood safe.By saying yes
so quickly, had he made a mistake?
注意:1.续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
Luther arrived home, and his cousin Charlie opened the door.

Luther’s worries slowly disappeared as he listened to Charlie’s
encouraging words.

参考范文:
Luther arrived home, and his cousin Charlie opened the door.Luther
felt a sense of comfort as he stepped into the familiar environment of his
new house.Charlie had always been his trusted friend, and they shared
countless adventures together.Luther told Charlie about the camping trip
with Josh and Billy, expressing his worries about the unknown dangers
of the wild.To Luther’s surprise, Charlie laughed,“Don’t worry,
Luther.I’ve been camping before, and it’s not as frightening as it
seems.Besides, we’ll have Josh, Billy, and Paul with us.It’ll be
an unforgettable experience!”
Luther’s worries slowly disappeared as he listened to Charlie’s
encouraging words. With new-found curiosity, Luther started picturing
the exciting moments they would share, sitting around the campfire,
looking at stars, and exploring nature’s wonders. He realized that this
camping trip could be a chance to make lasting memories and strengthen
his friendship with his classmates.Luther couldn’t help but feel a
