Yesterday, I was sitting by the window of my house above the bay, watching different groups of tourists stop to take photos.
They headed to the top of the hill to take photos of the coast — most likely to share them on social media. The members of the group usually stood with their backs to the bay with big smiles on their faces as if to say,“Look at us: we are here, and you are not.”
What surprised me was this: Of all the people I saw, only a few actually seemed to be “present”. Most seemed content to take a shot and get back on the road.
There were exceptions, however. Four or five young couples arrived throughout the day and, after taking the usual photos, spent quite a lot of time gazing (凝视), not at the view, but into each other’s eyes. I had no problem with that. Also, an older couple sat on a bench holding hands, studying the horizon (地平线).
My favourite exception was a boy, who looked about 7. He stood alone on a rock with his arms stretched wide and stared out at the ocean, possibly imagining all his wildest dreams coming true. A woman, maybe his mother, made him join her for a photo. Then, he went back to staring until it was time to go.
Most of us spend a lot of time looking at electronic screens, seeing the world on tiny displays. These small screens help us stay connected to the people we love, but they can also make us miss things that are important.
I’m not saying we’re supposed to forsake these screens completely — how else would we keep in touch? But sometimes, it’s such a pleasure to set them aside and stand like a child by the ocean, with eyes, arms and heart wide open. Indeed, there’s a name for that kind of pleasure — it’s called being alive.
24.What surprised the author when he was looking out?
A.Many tourists were taking pictures.
B.Few tourists were enjoying the scenery.
C.Some couples were gazing at each other.
D.An old couple were studying the horizon.

25.Why did the boy impress the author?
A.He was on a rock on his own. B.He was stretching his arms wide.
C.He was imaging his great dreams. D.He was concentrating on the ocean.
26.What does the underlined word “forsake” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Turn off. B.Take over.
C.Give up. D.Set down.
27.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Live in the Moment B.Stay Away from Screens
C.Enjoy the Beauty of Nature D.Let Your Wildest Dreams Fly

IELTS is a famous international test. It’s common for interviewees (接受面试者) to prepare answers before the exam but there are things that you should avoid doing.
Sometimes you can guess the kind of topics that you might be asked to talk about in the IELTS interview. This means that it is quite common for interviewees to prepare answers in advance and learn them by heart. Then, in the interview if the topic comes up they will regurgitate their answer — whether it answers the question or not. There are several problems with this method.
Firstly, it is usually very clear that an answer has been memorised as it sounds very unnatural to the examiner.Examiners have a lot of experience interviewing people and they can easily see when something isn’t quite right. If they think that the answer has been memorised they will probably interrupt (打断) your answer and move on to another question.
Secondly, if you have memorised an answer most probably you won’t answer the question directly and this will make the examiner think that something isn’t quite right.
In summary, you should avoid trying to memorise answers, but you can still prepare for the interview by thinking about possible topics and making sure you have the words and language to talk about the topics in general.
28.The underlined word “regurgitate” in Paragraph 2 probably means “ ”.
A.forget B.repeat
C.change D.prepare
29.What does the author think of a memorised answer?
A.It can please the examiner. B.It can help you pass the exam.
C.It can answer the question better. D.It can’t answer the question accurately.
30.The author advises us .
A.not to prepare for the interview B.not to guess the possible topics
C.to memorise some answers in advance D.to think about the possible topics in advance
31.How does the author express his/her opinion?
A.By giving some reasons. B.By giving some examples.
C.By providing some facts. D.By providing some numbers.

“Sleep problems are a global disease that threatens health and quality of life for up to 45% of the world’s population,” according to World Sleep Day statistics.
But it’s easy to recover from that sleep deprivation (缺乏), right, especially if you’re young? A good night’s sleep or two — and certainly a full week of sleep — and you’re back to your fully functioning self?
Unfortunately, a recent new study revealed that may not be the case, even for younger people.Thirteen people in their 20s who slept 30% less than they needed for 10 nights had not fully recovered most of their cognitive (认知的) processing after seven nights of unrestricted sleep to recover.
“What the study showed is that there are things like memory and mental processing speed that will not be restored that quickly,” said sleep specialist Dr Raj Dasgupta, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the University of Southern California.
“Definitely, the major parts of sleep loss can be recuperated, but there are things that you’re just not going to get back quickly,” Dasgupta said.“That’s why it’s so important not to have that sleep debt in the first place.”
That’s because the brain needs uninterrupted sleep cycles to absorb fresh skills, form key memories, and repair the body from the day’s wear and tear.During sleep, your body is actually repairing and restoring itself.
A lack of sleep therefore impacts your ability to pay attention, learn new things, be creative, solve problems and make decisions.Even skipping sleep for just one night disrupts functioning.
Depending on our age, we are supposed to get between 7 and 10 hours of sleep each night. But 1 in 3 Americans don’t get enough sleep, according to the CDC.In addition, 50 million to 70 million Americans struggle with sleep disorders, which can ruin a good night’s shut-eye.
The CDC calls that a “public health problem”, because disrupted sleep is associated with a higher risk of conditions including high blood pressure, weakened immune performance, weight gain, depression, and a higher risk of diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.
32.What did the recent new study find?
A.Lack of sleep is common in America. B.Good sleep can improve our memory.
C.Sleep deprivation leads to serious risks. D.Recovering from a lack of sleep is hard.
33.What does the underlined word “recuperated” in Paragraph 5 mean?
A.Improved. B.Influenced.
C.Recovered. D.Controlled.
34.What does the author mainly stress in Paragraph 6?
A.What sleep cycles are. B.The functions of sleep.
C.The risks of sleep deprivation. D.Why we don’t get enough sleep.
35.What’s the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To give a warning. B.To make a request.
C.To offer a suggestion. D.To conduct an analysis.

When we are learning English, it’s important to train our brain to think in English, but how?
Charles Thomas, who has taught English to children and teenagers for over 10 years, will share some mental exercises that can help.
The first one is — Describe unknown words. 36
“An example would be if you couldn’t think of the word ‘garage’,” Thomas says.“If you’re looking at your house and you see your garage, but you can’t think of the name in English, you can say, ‘The place inside where I put my car.’ Or you can say, ‘ 37 ’” He says you can also use shorter phrases, such as “It’s similar to ...” or “It’s the opposite of ...”.
38 For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell yourself things like, “It’s such a beautiful day” and “People are playing sports with their friends.” Once this becomes easy, you can move on to more difficult sentences.
Another exercise experts suggest is to describe your daily activities. 39
Thomas asks his beginning-level students to describe their day using the simple present verb form. So, they would think to themselves things like, “I put on my shirt” and “He drives the bus.”
Other experts say you can mentally make plans in the morning when you wake up. 40 So the skill level is a little higher.
For example, you might tell yourself,“When I leave the house, I’m going to get an iced coffee. Then, I’ll take the train to class.I’m studying with Paola today. She said she booked a study room at the library for 2 p.m.”
A.It’s possible to think in English.
B.There are a few ways to do this.
C.This would require other verb tenses.
D.You don’t need to translate every word.
E.It’s next to my house and I keep things there.
F.The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences.
G.That is to say, describe in your mind objects you don’t know the words for.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It’s been over 40 years since I rode a bike on Saturday afternoons. But I bought myself a bike for Christmas this year.As one of the children growing up in the country, I had never had a bike of my own.Dad had managed to save an old bike from the local waste yard and gave it to me.But I found it hard to love the second-hand bike, which didn’t even have a proper seat.
Before I bought myself a bike, I didn’t think riding a bike was my thing.I was in my sixties and therefore I thought I was too old to start something new and possibly dangerous. And I often asked myself questions:Would my body cope with this tiring sport?Would I be truly willing to spend hundreds of dollars only to leave the thing in the garage until it will finally be broken?Would I be safe on the road?
But then I read an interview with Cadel Evans, a winner of the Tour de France, about his annual charity work for bike riders. He said cycling is good for our heart and muscles and that it will improve our body if done regularly. It’s also a good way for us to go outside and exercise.More importantly, he said his mother still chose to ride in a 65 km race at an old age and that she didn’t feel fear while riding.Reading this, I felt inspired and I wanted to be just like his mother. Then I headed to the bike shop immediately and there was no turning back.
There were different kinds of bikes in the shop.I tried many of those bikes but they were just not what I wanted. Then I saw an amazing blue bike at the corner of the shop. That was it.I was happy that I found “my bike”.And it felt right the first time I sat on it.So it didn’t take me much time to make my choice.I bought it though it was expensive.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。
It didn’t fit in the back of my car, so I rode it home.

I’ve completely fallen in love with this sport.

M:Sounds good, but I’m still afraid I can’t understand.
W:Take it easy. Music is a universal language.
M:Yes, the music is supposed to be beautiful.
(Text 9)
W:I am told that you took some kids to go camping last week, did you?
M:Yes, it lasted three days.
W:Did the children enjoy the holiday camp or were they homesick?
M:Well, I must admit some of the younger kids were a bit unhappy because they’d never been away from their home on their own before. But soon they recovered. In the end, they even didn’t want to go home.
W:What sorts of things did you do with them?
M:There were some trips, including a visit to Hardwick Hall. That was what we did on the first day. I thought they expected it to be boring, especially when they heard that was a guided tour. But I was wrong, for the guide was interesting. His stories really made the history of the castle alive.
W:I can imagine it. By the way, what sorts of sports activities did you do?
M:A lot. Sailing, climbing, horse-riding and the hike. On the last day we had a barbecue, which was their favourite. The kids liked it very much. They all hoped to come again next year.
W:That sounds interesting and impressive.

Welcome to Student Life! Today we’re going to talk about setting up a project of student jobs in your school. Having students do different jobs around the school is a great way to prepare them for life in the real world. It encourages them to be responsible and also helps them learn new tasks and gain experience.
However, it’s important to get students excited about the project, so the first thing you should do is let students know this project. Get the headmaster to make an announcement explaining the project. OK?
Then decide on the jobs you want and write out the descriptions of the skills and responsibilities needed for each position. Some typical jobs are Classroom Assistants, Recycling Officers and Computer Assistants. Next, ask students to apply for the jobs. Students should be encouraged to write letters of application for the job they are interested in. This is a great way to practice letter writing skills. And don’t forget you should make sure students are guided by a teacher. A committee then reviews all the applications and gives jobs to the most suitable applicants. Finally, it’s important to get opinions from students about the project, and to find out which jobs are successful and which don’t go well.

Yesterday, I was sitting by the window of my house above the bay,
watching different groups of tourists stop to take photos.
They headed to the top of the hill to take photos of the coast — most
likely to share them on social media. The members of the group usually
stood with their backs to the bay with big smiles on their faces as if to
say,“Look at us: we are here, and you are not.”
What surprised me was this: Of all the people I saw, only a few
actually seemed to be “present”.Most seemed content to take a shot and get
back on the road.
There were exceptions, however.Four or five young couples arrived
throughout the day and, after taking the usual photos, spent quite a lot
of time gazing (凝视), not at the view, but into each other’s eyes.I
had no problem with that. Also, an older couple sat on a bench holding
hands, studying the horizon (地平线).
My favourite exception was a boy, who looked about 7.He stood
alone on a rock with his arms stretched wide and stared out at the ocean,
possibly imagining all his wildest dreams coming true.A woman, maybe
his mother, made him join her for a photo. Then, he went back to staring
until it was time to go.
Most of us spend a lot of time looking at electronic screens, seeing
the world on tiny displays. These small screens help us stay connected to
the people we love, but they can also make us miss things that are
important.
I’m not saying we’re supposed to forsake these screens completely —
how else would we keep in touch? But sometimes, it’s such a pleasure
to set them aside and stand like a child by the ocean, with eyes, arms
and heart wide open.Indeed, there’s a name for that kind of pleasure —
it’s called being alive.

IELTS is a famous international test. It’s common for interviewees
(接受面试者) to prepare answers before the exam but there are things
that you should avoid doing.
Sometimes you can guess the kind of topics that you might be asked to
talk about in the IELTS interview. This means that it is quite common for
interviewees to prepare answers in advance and learn them by heart. Then,
in the interview if the topic comes up they will regurgitate their answer —
whether it answers the question or not. There are several problems with this
method.
Firstly, it is usually very clear that an answer has been memorised as
it sounds very unnatural to the examiner.Examiners have a lot of
experience interviewing people and they can easily see when something
isn’t quite right. If they think that the answer has been memorised they will
probably interrupt (打断) your answer and move on to another question.
Secondly, if you have memorised an answer most probably you
won’t answer the question directly and this will make the examiner think
that something isn’t quite right.
In summary, you should avoid trying to memorise answers, but
you can still prepare for the interview by thinking about possible topics and
making sure you have the words and language to talk about the topics in
general.

of life for up to 45% of the world’s population,” according to World

But it’s easy to recover from that sleep deprivation (缺乏),
right, especially if you’re young? A good night’s sleep or two — and
certainly a full week of sleep — and you’re back to your fully functioning
self?
Unfortunately, a recent new study revealed that may not be the
case, even for younger people.Thirteen people in their 20s who slept 30%
less than they needed for 10 nights had not fully recovered most of their
cognitive (认知的) processing after seven nights of unrestricted sleep to
recover.
“What the study showed is that there are things like memory and
mental processing speed that will not be restored that quickly,” said sleep
specialist Dr Raj Dasgupta, an assistant professor of clinical medicine at
the University of Southern California.
“Definitely, the major parts of sleep loss can be recuperated, but
there are things that you’re just not going to get back quickly,” Dasgupta
said.“That’s why it’s so important not to have that sleep debt in the first
place.”
That’s because the brain needs uninterrupted sleep cycles to absorb
fresh skills, form key memories, and repair the body from the day’s
wear and tear.During sleep, your body is actually repairing and restoring
itself.
A lack of sleep therefore impacts your ability to pay attention, learn
new things, be creative, solve problems and make decisions.Even
skipping sleep for just one night disrupts functioning.
Depending on our age, we are supposed to get between 7 and 10
hours of sleep each night. But 1 in 3 Americans don’t get enough sleep,
according to the CDC. In addition, 50 million to 70 million Americans
struggle with sleep disorders, which can ruin a good night’s shut-eye.
The CDC calls that a “public health problem”, because disrupted
sleep is associated with a higher risk of conditions including high blood
pressure, weakened immune performance, weight gain, depression,
and a higher risk of diabetes, stroke, and some cancers.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最
佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When we are learning English, it’s important to train our brain to
think in English, but how?
Charles Thomas, who has taught English to children and
teenagers for over 10 years, will share some mental exercises that can
help.
The first one is — Describe unknown words. 36
“An example would be if you couldn’t think of the word
‘garage’,” Thomas says.“If you’re looking at your house and you see
your garage, but you can’t think of the name in English, you can
say, ‘The place inside where I put my car.’ Or you can say,
‘ 37 ’” He says you can also use shorter phrases, such as “It’s
similar to ...” or “It’s the opposite of ...”.
38 For example, if you are sitting in a park, you can tell
yourself things like, “It’s such a beautiful day” and “People are
playing sports with their friends.” Once this becomes easy, you can
move on to more difficult sentences.
Another exercise experts suggest is to describe your daily
activities. 39
Thomas asks his beginning-level students to describe their day
using the simple present verb form. So, they would think to
themselves things like, “I put on my shirt” and “He drives the bus.”
Other experts say you can mentally make plans in the morning
when you wake up. 40 So the skill level is a little higher.
For example, you might tell yourself,“When I leave the
house, I’m going to get an iced coffee. Then, I’ll take the train to
class.I’m studying with Paola today. She said she booked a study room
at the library for 2 p.m.”
A. It’s possible to think in English.
B. There are a few ways to do this.
C. This would require other verb tenses.
D. You don’t need to translate every word.
E. It’s next to my house and I keep things there.
F. The next exercise is thinking in simple sentences.
G. That is to say, describe in your mind objects you don’t know the
words for.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构
成一篇完整的短文。
It’s been over 40 years since I rode a bike on Saturday afternoons. But
I bought myself a bike for Christmas this year.As one of the children
growing up in the country, I had never had a bike of my own.Dad had
managed to save an old bike from the local waste yard and gave it to
me.But I found it hard to love the second-hand bike, which didn’t even
have a proper seat.
Before I bought myself a bike, I didn’t think riding a bike was my
thing.I was in my sixties and therefore I thought I was too old to start
something new and possibly dangerous. And I often asked myself
questions:Would my body cope with this tiring sport?Would I be truly
willing to spend hundreds of dollars only to leave the thing in the garage
until it will finally be broken?Would I be safe on the road?
But then I read an interview with Cadel Evans, a winner of the Tour
de France, about his annual charity work for bike riders. He said cycling is
good for our heart and muscles and that it will improve our body if done
regularly. It’s also a good way for us to go outside and exercise.More
importantly, he said his mother still chose to ride in a 65 km race at an
old age and that she didn’t feel fear while riding.Reading this, I felt
inspired and I wanted to be just like his mother. Then I headed to the bike
shop immediately and there was no turning back.
There were different kinds of bikes in the shop.I tried many of those
bikes but they were just not what I wanted. Then I saw an amazing blue
bike at the corner of the shop. That was it.I was happy that I found “my
bike”.And it felt right the first time I sat on it.So it didn’t take me much
time to make my choice.I bought it though it was expensive.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
It didn’t fit in the back of my car, so I rode it home.

I’ve completely fallen in love with this sport.

参考范文:
It didn’t fit in the back of my car, so I rode it home. With a little
fear, I rode carefully on my way home. Then I put the bike in my
garage, feeling childishly happy and out of breath.I rode again the next
day to meet a friend for coffee, which was a 15-minute ride.A few days
later, I rode for 40 minutes around a nearby lake.Day by day, my skill
in cycling improved. It’s amazing that I can ride for over one hour now,
which is far beyond my imagination.
I’ve completely fallen in love with this sport.During my weekly
rides, I find things that I’ve never noticed before.More importantly,
now I have some friends who share the same interest as me.Riding a bike is
not just a sport for me now.My weekly rides have become my special
moments when I feel like a kid again. They make me feel free, strong and
happy. How lucky I have made such a wonderful choice!
