Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class an interesting task — to draw a picture of something which they were thankful for.
Many would celebrate the holiday with turkey, corn and pumpkins and other traditional symbols of the festival. These, the teacher thought, would be the subjects of most of her students’ art.And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture.Douglas was a different kind of boy.As other children played during break, Douglas was likely to stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt behind those sad eyes.
Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand.Nothing else.Just an empty hand.
His picture caught the imagination of his classmates.Whose hand could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer.Another suggested a police officer. And so the discussion went — until the teacher almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other pictures, she paused at Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was.The little boy looked away and spoke in a low voice, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled (回忆) the times she had taken his hand and walked with him here or there. How often she had said, “Take my hand, Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his teacher’s hand.

Boxing has been practised for centuries — it was even one of the sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece.More recently, boxing has become the mainstream in the UK, with hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life participating in the sport every week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social benefits boxing can bring.
Its physical benefits are clear.Whether it’s practising with a punching bag or a partner or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an intense form of exercise and give a full-body workout. It can improve muscular strength, and it can also increase anaerobic fitness — allowing someone to work out harder, for longer. These can, in turn, have a positive impact on other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health and weight management.
But the high physical demands of the sport aren’t just good for the body.Boxing can also have a positive impact on someone’s mental well-being.Dr Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the Open University, says that boxing can mitigate some of the symptoms of anxiety and depression. Exercising regularly is already widely known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of discipline and focus.
And there is a third benefit to putting on the boxing gloves.Practising punches can be done alone, of course, but boxing is not just an individual activity — it also involves working with others to train and stay safe.Dr Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open University, says that this cooperation and teamwork can create a sense of identity ...and belonging. So, no matter what the reason that attracts someone to boxing, the interactive elements of the sport, mean it can also have profound social benefits.
Good for body, mind and social interactions? It’s not surprising that more and more people are stepping into the ring.
28.How does the author develop the passage?
A.By listing reasons. B.By giving examples.
C.By making suggestions. D.By answering questions.
29.What does the underlined word “mitigate” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Change. B.Reduce.
C.Control. D.Determine.
30.What would be the best choice according to Dr Gavin Williams?
A.Practising boxing in the ring. B.Practising boxing with a bag.
C.Practising boxing on your own. D.Practising boxing with a partner.
31.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Ways to Practise Boxing B.Boxing Leads to Great Teamwork
C.The Benefits of Doing Boxing D.Boxing Does Good to Your Health

Too busy to exercise? Sorry, that’s not true.
A new study says many Americans have plenty of free time in the day for exercise but they spend that time looking at screens instead. The study analyzed information from more than 32,000 Americans. On average, Americans reported more than 5 hours of free time per day, and most of this time was spent watching TV or using electronic devices, such as smartphones or computers.
“There is a general perception among the public and even public health professionals that a lack of leisure time is a major reason why Americans do not get enough physical activity,” study co-author Dr Deborah Cohen said in a statement.“But we found no evidence for those beliefs.”
The authors used a fairly strict definition of what counts as “free time”.Even so, the authors found that no age or ethnic group in the study reported less than 4.5 hours of free time per day.
Overall, men reported an average of nearly 6 hours (356 minutes) of free time per day, and women reported an average of 5.3 hours (318 minutes) per day.The group with the shortest amount of free time was women aged 25 to 60, who reported about 4.5 hours (271 minutes) per day, on average.
The majority of people’s free time was spent looking at screens, with men reporting 211 minutes of screen time per day and women reporting 175 minutes of screen time per day, on average.Men spent just 6.6% of their free time engaging in physical activity, and women spent just 5% of their free time doing physical activity.
People with higher incomes reported spending a larger share of their free time on physical activity and less time looking at screens compared with those in lower-income groups.
“Increasing the public’s awareness of how they actually use their time and encouraging Americans to reduce their screen time may help people to become more physically active,” Cohen said.
32.What prevents Americans from taking exercise in many people’s eyes?
A.A lack of strong will. B.A lack of motivation.
C.Not having enough time. D.Not having proper places.
33.How much free time do men spend on screens every day?
A.About 49%. B.About 55%.
C.About 59%. D.About 66%.
34.What conclusion can we draw from the new study?
A.Men are busier than women. B.Women are more physically active.
C.Women spend more time on screens. D.We have more free time than we think.
35.What do we learn about people with higher incomes?
A.They are more hardworking. B.They are more self-disciplined.
C.They have poorer physical health. D.They show less interest in technology.

Thanksgiving Day was near. The first grade teacher gave her class an
interesting task — to draw a picture of something which they were thankful
for.
Many would celebrate the holiday with turkey, corn and pumpkins
and other traditional symbols of the festival. These, the teacher thought,
would be the subjects of most of her students’ art.And they were.
But Douglas made a different kind of picture.Douglas was a different
kind of boy.As other children played during break, Douglas was likely to
stand close by her side. One could only guess at the pain Douglas felt
behind those sad eyes.
Yes, his picture was different. When asked to draw a picture of
something for which he was thankful, he drew a hand.Nothing else.Just
an empty hand.
His picture caught the imagination of his classmates.Whose hand
could it be? One child guessed it was the hand of a farmer.Another
suggested a police officer. And so the discussion went — until the teacher
almost forgot the young artist himself.
When the children had gone on to other pictures, she paused at
Douglas’ desk, bent down, and asked him whose hand it was.The little
boy looked away and spoke in a low voice, “It’s yours, teacher.”
She recalled (回忆) the times she had taken his hand and walked
with him here or there. How often she had said, “Take my hand,
Douglas, we’ll go outside.” Or, “Let me show you how to hold your
pencil.” Or, “Let’s do this together.” Douglas was most thankful for his
teacher’s hand.

Boxing has been practised for centuries — it was even one of the
sports in the original Olympic Games in ancient Greece.More recently,
boxing has become the mainstream in the UK, with hundreds of
thousands of people from all walks of life participating in the sport every
week. But why? The answer lies in the physical, mental and even social
benefits boxing can bring.
Its physical benefits are clear.Whether it’s practising with a punching
bag or a partner or facing an opponent in the ring, boxing can be an
intense form of exercise and give a full-body workout. It can improve
muscular strength, and it can also increase anaerobic fitness — allowing
someone to work out harder, for longer. These can, in turn, have a
positive impact on other aspects of physical well-being, like heart health
and weight management.
But the high physical demands of the sport aren’t just good for the
body.Boxing can also have a positive impact on someone’s mental well-
being.Dr Jessica Pinchbeck, Senior Lecturer in Sport and Fitness at the
Open University, says that boxing can some of the
symptoms of anxiety and depression.Exercising regularly is already widely
known to be good for mental health, but boxing can also bring a sense of
discipline and focus.
mitigate
And there is a third benefit to putting on the boxing gloves.Practising
punches can be done alone, of course, but boxing is not just an
individual activity — it also involves working with others to train and stay
safe.Dr Gavin Williams, Senior Lecturer in Education at the Open
University, says that this cooperation and teamwork can create a sense of
identity ...and belonging. So, no matter what the reason that attracts
someone to boxing, the interactive elements of the sport, mean it can
also have profound social benefits.
Good for body, mind and social interactions? It’s not surprising
that more and more people are stepping into the ring.

Too busy to exercise? Sorry, that’s not true.
A new study says many Americans have plenty of free time in the day
for exercise but they spend that time looking at screens instead. The study
analyzed information from more than 32,000 Americans. On average,
Americans reported more than 5 hours of free time per day, and most of
this time was spent watching TV or using electronic devices, such as
smartphones or computers.
“There is a general perception among the public and even public
health professionals that a lack of leisure time is a major reason why
Americans do not get enough physical activity,” study co-author Dr
Deborah Cohen said in a statement.“But we found no evidence for those
beliefs.”
The authors used a fairly strict definition of what counts as “free
time”.Even so, the authors found that no age or ethnic group in the study
reported less than 4.5 hours of free time per day.
Overall, men reported an average of nearly 6 hours (356 minutes)
of free time per day, and women reported an average of 5.3 hours (318
minutes) per day.The group with the shortest amount of free time was
women aged 25 to 60, who reported about 4.5 hours (271 minutes) per
day, on average.
The majority of people’s free time was spent looking at screens, with
men reporting 211 minutes of screen time per day and women reporting
175 minutes of screen time per day, on average.Men spent just 6.6% of
their free time engaging in physical activity, and women spent just 5% of
their free time doing physical activity.
People with higher incomes reported spending a larger share of their
free time on physical activity and less time looking at screens compared
with those in lower-income groups.
“Increasing the public’s awareness of how they actually use their time
and encouraging Americans to reduce their screen time may help people to
become more physically active,” Cohen said.

There are some key decisions you make during your teen years
that can make or break your future. So, choose wisely, and don’t
blow it.
If you do happen to blow it, however, it’s not the end of the
world. 36 Being a teen today is tougher than ever. While your
grandparents may have had to walk uphill to school in the snow, you
have a different set of challenges to navigate. It’s a totally different
world!
37 Or you may be struggling with one of them or all of
them.Whatever your situation, you need to learn all you can about
each decision, the ins and outs, the good and bad, so that you can
make informed decisions, with your eyes wide open.
Many decisions you make as a teen can impact your life
forever. The good news is where you end up ten years from now is up to
you. 38 It’s called free agency or free will and it’s your
birthright.Ultimately, you choose to be happy or miserable.
The reality is that although you are free to choose, you can’t
choose the consequences of your choices. They’re preloaded. It’s a
package deal.As the old saying goes, “If you pick up one end of the
stick, you pick up the other.” 39 For example, if you decide to
do poorly in school and not go to college, you’ll suffer the natural
consequences of finding it hard even to get an interview for a high-
paying job.
The word decision comes from the Latin root meaning “to cut off
from”. 40 That’s why decisions can be hard sometimes.
A. It can be difficult sometimes.

C. You need to think twice before you take action.

finished her homework. After entering Lisa’s home, Jenny found that Lisa
was chatting on her cell phone.Jenny was surprised as she didn’t know Lisa
had gone downtown to buy a cell phone.
After Lisa finished talking over the cell phone, Jenny asked her,
“When did you get your cell phone?”
“I bought it yesterday.Look! How lovely it looks!” said Lisa.
Jenny looked at the cell phone. It was pink and looked really
lovely.Jenny wished she could also have such a cell phone.
That day, after Jenny came back home, she saw her father sitting
on the sofa reading a newspaper.Jenny approached him and said,“Dad,
could I have a cell phone? Many of my classmates have their own cell
phones now.”
“Of course, you can have one,” said Jenny’s father.Hearing that,
Jenny became very happy.
“Thank you, Dad,” Jenny said happily. Then she asked,“When
shall we go downtown to buy one?”
The father looked up hearing that. Then he said,“Oh, no, dear!
I’m not going to buy you a cell phone. If you really want one, you should
make money to buy one yourself.”
Jenny immediately became upset. But she knew her father was
serious. She walked away and went to her own room.
The following day, Jenny went to school as usual. When Lisa saw
her at school, she looked a bit upset.Lisa came to her and asked why she
was wearing a long face that day.Jenny said,“I asked my dad to buy a cell
phone for me, but he said I should work for one myself.”
But Lisa didn’t seem to be surprised at all, and she said,“Don’t get
surprised, because that’s how I bought my own cell phone.”
Hearing that, Jenny remembered Lisa once told her she was helping
look after the Smiths’ one-year-old son in the past summer. Now she knew
