During my senior year in college I came across “Private Voice Instruction”. As in singing lessons, I thought,“Why not step outside my comfort zone and give it a try?”
I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other students.
Things went fine until the end of the term when my singing professor brought the shocking news.“By the way, Sean, have you decided which song you want to sing at the recital (演唱会)?”
“That would not be a good idea,” I said. The thought of singing in front of a group made me physically sick.
“Courage, Sean.” I kept rehearsing in my mind.“You’ve got to at least try.”
That dreaded day finally arrived. As I stood in front of the class, all eyes fell upon me.I couldn’t help but think,“How? How in the world did I get myself into this situation?”
Even before I reached the second line, the expressions of excitement on the students’ faces turned to anguish (痛苦).I was so nervous that my body felt as tight as jeans just pulled from the dryer.
Near the end of the song is a really high note.I don’t recall if I hit that note or missed it.All I remember is that a few students were so embarrassed that they couldn’t even look at me.
I finished and sat down quickly.Silence.No one knew what to say.
But do you know what? Although that experience nearly killed me, when I left that classroom, I was so proud of myself.I felt a great sense of personal accomplishment, and I frankly didn’t care what anyone else thought about my high note.I had survived and I was proud of it.

C.He had conquered the audience. D.He thought he had done a great job.

For the British, there are two days of celebration for tea.National Tea Day is on 21 April every year, but just a month later, it’s International Tea Day — when other nations join in celebrating Brits’ favourite drink.
Every year International Tea Day is on 21 May.International Tea Day has been celebrated in popular tea-growing countries like India and Sri Lanka since 2005, but was only accepted by the United Nations in December 2019.The date was then moved from its normal December celebration to 21 May.
Tea is drunk in so many cultures. However, it is hard to fix an exact date as to when the drink was invented. It is believed to have originated during the Yunnan region during the Shang Dynasty as a medicinal drink.

Does the milk go in first or second in a cup of tea? This age-old debate has long divided tea lovers, and Twinings gave the answer. They said on their website:“Historically, the ‘milk in first’ rule was to protect the fine bone china it was served in — it’s a very individual thing.” So there you have it, which side are you on?

The Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water on the planet. Its name in Hebrew translates as the Salt Sea.
But the Dead Sea is dying, its waters disappearing at a surprising rate. With each passing year, the possibility of enjoying a visit to its shores keeps receding.According to environmental group EcoPeace Middle East, the water level drops about one meter per year.
The Dead Sea is fed from natural sources, primarily the Jordan River, but some of those it relies on have been either dammed or diverted (改道).Meanwhile Dead Sea minerals, highly prized for their medical use, are being extracted, further contributing to the sea’s shrinking.
Not unlike the Dead Sea, Jordan’s tourist numbers had been drying up in the last decade. In 2020, tourism revenues fell to $1.4 billion, a fall of 76% on the previous year, according to the UN World Tourism Organization.
The sudden drop was a major blow to Jordan.According to the World Bank, tourist numbers drop from 8 million in 2010 to 4.24 million in 2016.
In its latest effort to win back visitors, Jordan’s Tourism Board has launched a new campaign, branding itself the “Kingdom of Time”. The country’s tourism minister, Nayef Al-Fayez, used the recent World Travel Market trade event in London to promote the campaign.
“Jordan is back, as a destination with natural diversity, historical richness, and a contemporary Arabian culture of openness and warm hospitality that welcomes everyone for leisure, business and healing,” he told industry representatives.
There is no doubt that Jordan’s epic landscapes and archaeological sites are a major tourist attraction. In fact, they’re used regularly by filmmakers from Amman to Hollywood as backgrounds.
Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein is the chairman of Jordan’s Royal Film Commission.“It’s important that we are developing our own film industry and it brings real benefits to people. It’s not about getting support or money into government. It’s about the people who work on the ground, the local communities all benefit from this wonderful industry,” Ali says.
32.What does the underlined word “receding” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A Yes-man refers to a person who, regardless of actual attitude, always expresses agreement with other people around him or her. 36 If you are a Yes-man, your life is full of activities that are important to other people but not important to you.
A Yes-man has a hard time saying no to anything or anyone. He tries so hard to please everyone that he usually ends up pleasing no one, including himself. He suffers from FOMO — Fear of Missing Out. 37 He often gives in to peer pressure because he likes feeling popular and he wouldn’t want to stand out.
When his friends dropped by unexpectedly one evening and wanted him to go for a night ride, he just didn’t have the courage to turn them down. 38 It didn’t matter that he was taking an important test the next morning and needed to study and get some sleep.
He told his sister that he’d help her with maths, but he couldn’t resist getting distracted (干扰) by a texting marathon for most of the night. 39
I think we won’t achieve much if we say yes to everything and never learn to focus on what’s most important.

A.He didn’t want to disappoint them.
B.Even though it wasn’t that important.
C.He feels like a follower rather than a leader.
D.In the end, many important things will be forgotten.

第二节
A few days later, a school speech contest was to be held.Dr Smith had encouraged me to participate, so I decided to give it a try.I prepared for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my lines. On the day of the contest, my heart was pounding, but I took a deep breath and walked onto the stage.I looked down at the audience and saw my classmates, friends, and family all there to support me.I smiled and began my speech. It turned out that I did a great job.
After the contest, I went to visit Dr Smith happily. She congratulated me on my speech and said that I had made great progress. She also reminded me that social anxiety was still there, but that it was now under control. She encouraged me to keep up the good work and continue to face my fears. It was at that moment that I firmly believed that nothing in the world is difficult if we set our minds on it.

During my senior year in college I came across “Private Voice
Instruction”.As in singing lessons, I thought,“Why not step outside my
comfort zone and give it a try?”
I was careful to sign up for private lessons instead of group lessons
because I didn’t want to make a fool of myself by singing in front of other
students.
Things went fine until the end of the term when my singing professor
brought the shocking news.“By the way, Sean, have you decided which
song you want to sing at the recital (演唱会)?”
“That would not be a good idea,” I said. The thought of singing in
front of a group made me physically sick.
“Courage, Sean.” I kept rehearsing in my mind.“You’ve got to at
least try.”
That dreaded day finally arrived. As I stood in front of the class, all
eyes fell upon me.I couldn’t help but think,“How? How in the world did
I get myself into this situation?”
Even before I reached the second line, the expressions of excitement
on the students’ faces turned to anguish (痛苦).I was so nervous that my
body felt as tight as jeans just pulled from the dryer.
Near the end of the song is a really high note.I don’t recall if I hit that
note or missed it.All I remember is that a few students were so embarrassed
that they couldn’t even look at me.
I finished and sat down quickly.Silence.No one knew what to say.
But do you know what? Although that experience nearly killed me,
when I left that classroom, I was so proud of myself.I felt a great sense of
personal accomplishment, and I frankly didn’t care what anyone else
thought about my high note.I had survived and I was proud of it.

For the British, there are two days of celebration for tea.National Tea
Day is on 21 April every year, but just a month later, it’s International
Tea Day — when other nations join in celebrating Brits’ favourite drink.
Every year International Tea Day is on 21 May.International Tea Day
has been celebrated in popular tea-growing countries like India and Sri
Lanka since 2005, but was only accepted by the United Nations in
December 2019.The date was then moved from its normal December
celebration to 21 May.
Tea is drunk in so many cultures. However, it is hard to fix an exact
date as to when the drink was invented. It is believed to have originated
during the Yunnan region during the Shang Dynasty as a medicinal drink.
An early record of tea drinking is noted in the third century CE before
spreading across the globe. It became a popular drink in the 17th century in
Britain. And the British went on to introduce its production in India.
Which tea is best for health? Chamomile (甘菊) and Green teas
are tied for first place when it comes to health. Both are considered the
healthiest tea choices. However, they serve different purposes.Chamomile
tea cuts blood-sugar levels.Green tea has been shown to improve blood
flow and lower cholesterol (胆固醇).
Does the milk go in first or second in a cup of tea? This age-old
debate has long divided tea lovers, and Twinings gave the answer. They
said on their website:“Historically, the ‘milk in first’ rule was to protect
the fine bone china it was served in — it’s a very individual thing.” So
there you have it, which side are you on?

The Dead Sea is fed from natural sources, primarily the Jordan
River, but some of those it relies on have been either dammed or diverted
(改道).Meanwhile Dead Sea minerals, highly prized for their medical
use, are being extracted, further contributing to the sea’s shrinking.
Not unlike the Dead Sea, Jordan’s tourist numbers had been drying
up in the last decade. In 2020, tourism revenues fell to $1.4 billion, a fall
of 76% on the previous year, according to the UN World Tourism
Organization.
The sudden drop was a major blow to Jordan.According to the World
Bank, tourist numbers drop from 8 million in 2010 to 4.24 million in
2016.
In its latest effort to win back visitors, Jordan’s Tourism Board has
launched a new campaign, branding itself the “Kingdom of Time”.The
country’s tourism minister, Nayef Al-Fayez, used the recent World
Travel Market trade event in London to promote the campaign.
“Jordan is back, as a destination with natural diversity, historical
richness, and a contemporary Arabian culture of openness and warm
hospitality that welcomes everyone for leisure, business and healing,”
he told industry representatives.
There is no doubt that Jordan’s epic landscapes and archaeological
sites are a major tourist attraction. In fact, they’re used regularly by
filmmakers from Amman to Hollywood as backgrounds.
Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein is the chairman of Jordan’s Royal Film
Commission.“It’s important that we are developing our own film industry
and it brings real benefits to people. It’s not about getting support or money
into government. It’s about the people who work on the ground, the local
communities all benefit from this wonderful industry,” Ali says.

A Yes-man refers to a person who, regardless of actual attitude,

her. 36 If you are a Yes-man, your life is full of activities that are
important to other people but not important to you.
A Yes-man has a hard time saying no to anything or anyone. He
tries so hard to please everyone that he usually ends up pleasing no
one, including himself. He suffers from FOMO — Fear of Missing
Out. 37 He often gives in to peer pressure because he likes feeling
popular and he wouldn’t want to stand out.
When his friends dropped by unexpectedly one evening and
wanted him to go for a night ride, he just didn’t have the courage to
turn them down. 38 It didn’t matter that he was taking an important
test the next morning and needed to study and get some sleep.
He told his sister that he’d help her with maths, but he couldn’t
resist getting distracted (干扰) by a texting marathon for most of the
night. 39
I think we won’t achieve much if we say yes to everything and
never learn to focus on what’s most important.
Don’t be a Yes-man. 40 Trying to please everyone is like a
dog trying to catch its tail.Remember, when you’re saying no you’re
really saying yes to more important things.

构成一篇完整的短文。
(2024·青岛高一上学期期中)Ever since I can remember, I’ve
always been shy.The thought of talking to new people or being the center
of attention made my heart race and palms sweat. As I entered middle
school, this shyness turned into social anxiety, making it even harder
for me to interact with my peers.
One day, during a class presentation, I stumbled (结巴) over
my words and everyone laughed.I felt extremely ashamed. That only
made my social anxiety worse, and I started avoiding speaking in front
of others.
My parents noticed my struggle and suggested I talk to our family
therapist (治疗专家), Dr Smith. At first, I hesitated, but I knew I
needed help.During our first period, Dr Smith explained that social
anxiety was a common issue and there were ways to overcome it.She
recommended some effective treatments.Over the next few months, I
attended weekly treatment with Dr Smith.Slowly but surely, I began to
feel more confident in myself. As part of the treatment, Dr Smith
encouraged me to take part in school events and clubs that interested
me.It was terrifying to put myself out there, but I knew it was
necessary for my growth.

参考范文:
A few days later, a school speech contest was to be held.Dr Smith
had encouraged me to participate, so I decided to give it a try.I prepared
for weeks, practicing my speech in front of a mirror and rehearsing my
lines. On the day of the contest, my heart was pounding, but I took a
deep breath and walked onto the stage.I looked down at the audience and
saw my classmates, friends, and family all there to support me.I smiled
and began my speech. It turned out that I did a great job.
After the contest, I went to visit Dr Smith happily. She congratulated
me on my speech and said that I had made great progress. She also
reminded me that social anxiety was still there, but that it was now under
control. She encouraged me to keep up the good work and continue to face
my fears. It was at that moment that I firmly believed that nothing in the
world is difficult if we set our minds on it.
