(2024·淄博高一上学期学科素养检测) It was Williams’ mother who got her interested in reading books. A librarian, she read to her three children every day. “Not until we went to school,” Williams said. “Until we went to college.”
When Williams, now 54, became a primary school teacher in Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she had. But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to read books.
“Kids who are read to perform much better than those who are not,” she said. To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In 2017, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most people would be satisfied with that.
She said, “I wanted to do something.”
So she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It sounds like an unreachable number. However, Williams posted on the Internet: “Don’t complain if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the field.” She got to work, first by advising friends to give away books or money to buy books. Soon, as news of Williams’ project spread, strangers started putting books in front of her door. As quickly as the books came in, Williams gave them to local schools for free.
In the four years, Williams has given away more than 78,000 books — only 922,000 more to reach her goal! And she’s not slowing down. “Reading can take you anywhere,” she said. “You can travel in time and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”
24.What is the purpose of Williams’ project?
A.To make it possible for more children to read books.
B.To encourage teachers to read books to kids.
C.To encourage children to buy books.
D.To help more people to travel in space.
25.Why did Williams post on the Internet?

26.Which of the following can best describe Williams’ story?
A.Well begun, half done. B.Time and tide wait for no man.
C.Failure is the mother of success. D.Where there is a will, there is a way.
27.What might be the best title for the text?
A.A Reading Competition B.A Reading Lover
C.The Book Lady D.The Book Travel

When my daughter was around 14 years old, she began to ask if she could have a cup of coffee in the morning like Mom and Dad.
Many kids and teens consume caffeine (咖啡因). The main source of this chemical is soda for children under 12. Even colas have lower levels of caffeine than tea or coffee.
Kids and teens can get caffeine from many foods and drinks, including chocolate, chocolate milk and iced tea. What’s more, some medicines that kids might take are important sources of caffeine. But coffee is the main source of caffeine among Americans 12 years and up.
Based on my years of research, I’m confident that one daily cup of coffee won’t harm kids over the age of 12 — as long as they avoid all other sources of caffeine.
That one cup of coffee combined with a can of iced tea or soda, or a chocolate bar, could put kids over the daily limit of 100 milligrams of caffeine doctors suggest. Adults should aim for no more than 400 milligrams of caffeine, which they could get from four cups of coffee.
Having too much caffeine can have many negative effects on kids, like putting them in a bad mood, depriving them of sleep and contributing to misbehavior, such as risk-taking and aggression. Coffee can also make some kids feel nervous and anxious. It can change their heart rate and blood pressure.
Some adults may tell kids that drinking caffeine will stunt their growth. There are two reasons why some people think that. First, caffeine can reduce the amount of calcium in your bones. Second, caffeine consumed later in the day can reduce sleep, so the idea was that less sleep would lead to less growth. It turns out that neither of these worries was valid (有根据的).
32.What does the author want to tell us about caffeine?
A.It can be good for us. B.It is harmful to our health.
C.It is very common in our lives. D.It can be found in many drinks.
33.According to doctors, every day an adult should drink .
A.at least one cup of coffee B.at least two cups of coffee
C.at most three cups of coffee D.at most four cups of coffee
34.What does the underlined word “stunt” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Change. B.Prevent.
C.Improve. D.Increase.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Is It OK for Teens to Drink Coffee? B.Is Caffeine Good or Bad for Teens?
C.Where Do We Like Drinking Coffee? D.How Much Coffee Should We Drink?

To better manage your time and put first things first, do the following two things: Start a calendar and plan weekly.
To start with, I highly recommend getting a planner or calendar — on your computer, phone, on paper, whatever works. 36 There are some great apps for calendars, or if you want you can buy a paper planner or make your own out of a notebook.
Some of you might be thinking,“I don’t want my life to be tied to a planner. 37 ” If this is you, keep in mind that a planner wasn’t designed to tie you down but to free you up. With a planner you’ll no longer have to worry about forgetting things or double-booking yourself. 38 You can keep all of your important information in one place instead of scattered all over. A planner is not meant to be your master but a tool to help you live your life.
39 Why weekly? Because we think in weeks and because daily planning is too narrow a focus and monthly planning is too broad a focus.
What should you do? At the end or beginning of each week, sit down and think about what you want to accomplish for the upcoming week. Ask yourself, “ 40 ” I call these your big rocks. They are sort of like mini-goals and should be tied into your mission statement and longer-term goals.
A.I like my freedom.
B.How should I spend the new week?
C.It’s very important to manage your time.
D.Take a few minutes each week to plan your week.
E.What are the most important things I need to do this week?
F.It will remind you when your papers are due and tests are to be taken.
G.Just somewhere with space to write down appointments, to-do lists, and goals.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze; it felt as though my soul had departed from my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster (花名册) posted on the wall of the locker room; my heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends’ names on that list but could not find mine. At that moment, I froze; I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team but I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. “Are you sure that the roster you posted is correct?” I asked anxiously, dreading his answer.
“Yes, the names on the list are finalized. Sorry if you did not make it this year.Better luck next year,” the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears building in my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day; everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the parking lot, celebrating and joking around. I tried to avoid seeing them because I failed to make the team.
I saw my father’s familiar red Mazda pull up near the school lot, and I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, played the radio, and started driving home.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式作答。

The coast is the most popular place for the English people to spend their holidays.Food in British restaurants is reasonably cheap, but rooms are not.Few English people rent houses for their holidays, but one of the traditional ways of spending a summer holiday is in a boarding house. Some boarding-house keepers provide all meals for their guests, but others provide breakfast only.
The British people may refuse to change the times at which they take their holidays, but they have shown themselves to be very ready to try new places. When they get home again, they always talk about how they spent their holidays.

语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。文章简要介绍了社交媒体的概念及用途。
56.where 考查定语从句。本空格前面的a website or an app是先行词,这里由关系副词where引导一个定语从句,where在该定语从句中作状语。
munication/communicative 考查词形转换。
本句主语为Baidu Tieba, WeChat, and Weibo,因此填入系动词are。
64.an 考查冠词。这里表示社交媒体平台已经成为企业进行市场营销的“一”部分。因为后面是important part,故填不定冠词an。
65.to 考查介词。the key to (doing) sth是一种固定用法,因此这里填入介词to。

Dear Peter,
Thanks for your kind attention! Now let me tell you my plan for the coming new term.
Firstly, I will study hard to achieve good exam scores in all subjects. To realise my dream of attending an ideal university, I must make constant progress.Secondly, I’ll take exercise regularly every day to build up my body, because nothing is more important than health. Finally, taking part in some volunteer activities is also of great importance. We should make this world more beautiful by helping and serving others. It’s true that we make a life by what we give.
This is my plan. What about your new term plan? I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

第二节
Noticing my bad mood, he asked me what was wrong.“Nothing. Well, it’s just that all my friends made the school team.” I replied in a low voice, not knowing how he would react. “Well, what are you going to do about it? Are you just going to sit there? Nobody will give you a spot on that team — you have to earn it by yourself,” he asked and continued, “You are not a failure until you give up.”
Moved by what my dad said, I decided to work towards my goal. Then I got up at 6 every morning and practiced playing basketball on the school playground. There were moments when I didn’t think I could keep on going, but I beat my laziness. After all, I thought, winners don’t quit and quitters will never win. After almost a year of practicing and training, I took the test and made the team. In the end, all my hard work paid off and my dream came true!

The coast is the most popular place for the English people to spend their
holidays.Food in British restaurants is reasonably cheap, but rooms are
not.Few English people rent houses for their holidays, but one of the
traditional ways of spending a summer holiday is in a boarding house. Some
boarding-house keepers provide all meals for their guests, but others

places. When they get home again, they always talk about how they spent

(2024·淄博高一上学期学科素养检测) It was Williams’ mother
who got her interested in reading books.A librarian, she read to her three
children every day.“Not until we went to school,” Williams said.“Until
we went to college.”
When Williams, now 54, became a primary school teacher in
Virginia, she wanted her students to fall in love with reading just as she
had.But early on, she realized that some kids had little chance to read
books.
“Kids who are read to perform much better than those who are not,”
she said.To Williams, the solution was simple: Give kids books. In
2017, she gave away 900 used children’s books over three days. Most
people would be satisfied with that.
She said, “I wanted to do something.”
So she set a new goal for herself: Give away one million books. It
sounds like an unreachable number. However, Williams posted on the
Internet: “Don’t complain if you aren’t willing to work hard out on the
field.” She got to work, first by advising friends to give away books or
money to buy books.Soon, as news of Williams’ project spread,
strangers started putting books in front of her door.As quickly as the books
came in, Williams gave them to local schools for free.
In the four years, Williams has given away more than 78,000
books — only 922,000 more to reach her goal! And she’s not slowing
down.“Reading can take you anywhere,” she said.“You can travel in time
and space. If you can read, you can learn almost anything.”

Sometimes, deciding the best is difficult. For example, deciding the
10 best public high schools — out of 24,000 — in America.
Two publications put together lists of the top 10.But the website
and the magazine US News and World Report could agree on
only one. Both named Thomas Jefferson High School for Science &
Technology of Fairfax County, Virginia. Many people call it just “Thomas
Jefferson”.
Niche ranked (排名) Thomas Jefferson number four.US News put
Thomas Jefferson at six.But the two publications could not agree on their
other top nine high schools.
In ’s latest ratings (评定), three of the top public high
schools lie in Chicago, Illinois, America’s third most populated city.
The Chicago schools are Walter Payton College Prep, rated Number
1; Northside College Preparatory High School, Number 2; and Young
Magnet High School, Number 6.
Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel welcomed the good news for his
city.“I am so proud of the great work by teachers and students in these high
schools,” Emanuel said.
However, US News and World Report gave its top ratings to charter
schools.Charter schools receive public money, but operate independently
of many local and state education rules.
Three charter schools in Arizona took the highest positions at US
News and World Report. They are all operated by a private company called
BASIS Education Group LLC. BASIS also operates charter schools in
Texas, Louisiana and Washington D. C.
The BASIS school in Scottsdale, Arizona was rated Number 1
nationally, followed by BASIS Tucson North and BASIS Oro
Valley.Another BASIS Arizona charter, BASIS Peoria, was ranked
Number 5.
US News said it made a change in its ratings this year, giving more
weight to high schools where students take and pass college-level courses
and exams.Preparing high school students for college-level classes and
tests is a major part of BASIS’ education plan for its students.

When my daughter was around 14 years old, she began to ask if she
could have a cup of coffee in the morning like Mom and Dad.
Many kids and teens consume caffeine (咖啡因).The main source
of this chemical is soda for children under 12.Even colas have lower levels
of caffeine than tea or coffee.
Kids and teens can get caffeine from many foods and drinks,
including chocolate, chocolate milk and iced tea. What’s more, some
medicines that kids might take are important sources of caffeine. But coffee
is the main source of caffeine among Americans 12 years and up.
Based on my years of research, I’m confident that one daily cup of
coffee won’t harm kids over the age of 12 — as long as they avoid all other
sources of caffeine.
That one cup of coffee combined with a can of iced tea or soda, or a
chocolate bar, could put kids over the daily limit of 100 milligrams of
caffeine doctors suggest.Adults should aim for no more than 400
milligrams of caffeine, which they could get from four cups of coffee.
Having too much caffeine can have many negative effects on kids,
like putting them in a bad mood, depriving them of sleep and contributing
to misbehavior, such as risk-taking and aggression.Coffee can also make
some kids feel nervous and anxious. It can change their heart rate and blood
pressure.
Some adults may tell kids that drinking caffeine will stunt their
growth. There are two reasons why some people think that.First, caffeine
can reduce the amount of calcium in your bones.Second, caffeine
consumed later in the day can reduce sleep, so the idea was that less sleep
would lead to less growth. It turns out that neither of these worries was
valid (有根据的).

To better manage your time and put first things first, do the
following two things: Start a calendar and plan weekly.
To start with, I highly recommend getting a planner or
calendar — on your computer, phone, on paper, whatever
works. 36 There are some great apps for calendars, or if you want
you can buy a paper planner or make your own out of a notebook.
Some of you might be thinking,“I don’t want my life to be tied
to a planner. 37 ” If this is you, keep in mind that a planner wasn’t
designed to tie you down but to free you up.With a planner you’ll no
longer have to worry about forgetting things or double-booking
yourself. 38 You can keep all of your important information in one
place instead of scattered all over.A planner is not meant to be your
master but a tool to help you live your life.
39 Why weekly? Because we think in weeks and because
daily planning is too narrow a focus and monthly planning is too broad
a focus.
What should you do? At the end or beginning of each week, sit
down and think about what you want to accomplish for the upcoming
week.Ask yourself, “ 40 ” I call these your big rocks.They are sort
of like mini-goals and should be tied into your mission statement and
longer-term goals.
A. I like my freedom.
B. How should I spend the new week?
C. It’s very important to manage your time.
D. Take a few minutes each week to plan your week.
E. What are the most important things I need to do this week?
F. It will remind you when your papers are due and tests are to be taken.
G. Just somewhere with space to write down appointments, to-do
lists, and goals.

56. where 考查定语从句。本空格前面的a website or an app是先行
词,这里由关系副词where引导一个定语从句,where在该定语从句
中作状语。
munication/communicative 考查词形转换。本空格后面是
名词tools,这里需要填入一个名词或形容词作其定语。
58. makes 考查时态。根据上下文可知,这里应用一般现在
时;另外,这里的关系代词that指代前面的先行词One thing,
视为单数。

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze; it felt as though my
soul had departed from my body and I had no control over it.Anxiously, I
looked through the roster (花名册) posted on the wall of the locker
room; my heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my
friends’ names on that list but could not find mine.At that moment, I
froze; I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball
team but I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the
coach.“Are you sure that the roster you posted is correct?” I asked
anxiously, dreading his answer.
“Yes, the names on the list are finalized.Sorry if you did not make it
this year.Better luck next year,” the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears building in my eyes, and I ran out
of the room as fast as I could.Trying to forget about the situation, I
headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food.I felt dead inside, like
nothing mattered.Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-
pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of
the school day; everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the
other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw
all my friends gathered near the parking lot, celebrating and joking
around.I tried to avoid seeing them because I failed to make the team.
I saw my father’s familiar red Mazda pull up near the school lot, and
I walked up to the car and got in.He smiled at me, played the radio, and
started driving home.

参考范文:
Noticing my bad mood, he asked me what was
wrong.“Nothing.Well, it’s just that all my friends made the school team.”
I replied in a low voice, not knowing how he would react.“Well, what
are you going to do about it? Are you just going to sit there? Nobody
will give you a spot on that team — you have to earn it by yourself,” he
asked and continued, “You are not a failure until you give up.”
Moved by what my dad said, I decided to work towards my
goal. Then I got up at 6 every morning and practiced playing basketball on
the school playground. There were moments when I didn’t think I could
keep on going, but I beat my laziness. After all, I thought, winners
don’t quit and quitters will never win. After almost a year of practicing and
training, I took the test and made the team.In the end, all my hard work
paid off and my dream came true!
