An important part of our lives is discovering what you’re good at.One thing I know for sure is that everyone has a talent, a gift, something they are good at.
After carving a beautiful sculpture, Michelangelo was asked how he was able to do it.He replied by saying that the sculpture was already in the block of rock from the very beginning; he just had to chisel (凿) off everything else around it.
Likewise, Victor Frankl, a famous doctor, taught that we don’t invent our talents in life but rather we discover them.In other words, you are already born with your talents, and you just need to uncover them.
I’ll never forget my experience with finding a talent I never thought I had.
To fulfill Mr Williams’s creative writing assignment for freshman English, I excitedly turned in my first high school paper, entitled “The Old Man and the Fish”.It was the same story my father had often told me at bedtime while I was growing up.I just assumed he had made it up.He didn’t bother telling me he had stolen the plot directly from Ernest Hemingway’s award-winning novel The Old Man and the Sea.I was shocked when my paper was returned with the remarks,“Sounds a bit trite.Like Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.” “Who’s this guy Hemingway?” I thought.“And how come he copied my dad?” That was my poor start to four years of rather boring high school English classes.
It wasn’t until college, when I took a short story class from an amazing professor, that I began to discover my passion for writing. If you can believe it, I even majored in English.Mr Williams would have felt surprised.
24.What does the author try to tell us by giving the example of Michelangelo and Victor Frankl?
A.We all have our talents. B.It takes hard work to succeed.
C.Great talent leads to great work. D.It’s difficult to finish something great.
25.What do we learn about the story in the author’s paper?
A.It was created by himself. B.It was made up by his father.
C.Mr Williams was familiar with it. D.Mr Williams read it for the first time.
26.What does the underlined word “trite” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Not popular. B.Not original.
C.Not effective. D.Not common.
27.What can we infer about the author before going to college?
A.He had a passion for literature. B.He showed a talent for writing.
C.He was appreciated by Mr Williams. D.He didn’t know much about literature.

New research suggests that nearly half of American teenagers say they almost use the Internet all the time. The United States-based Pew Research Center released a study this month. It found that the share of teens who say they are online almost all the time rose from 24 percent in 2015 to 46 percent.
The research found that about 95 percent of American teens have smartphones. The study also asked teens about their social media behaviour. It found that the number of teens using Facebook has dropped to 32 percent, down from 71 percent in 2015.
The research shows that teens have moved away from Facebook to spend time on the video sharing services like YouTube and TikTok.About 95 percent of teens said they use Google-owned YouTube, while 67 percent said they use TikTok.
About 62 percent of the teens said they use Instagram, which is owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta.About 59 percent said they use Snapchat.Less than one fourth of teens said they use Twitter.
Experts in online technology behaviour have accused large technology companies of using some methods to get teens to spend more time on their social media services. One method uses algorithms(算法) to repeatedly suggest content to keep users on the services for longer periods of time.
Child rights groups have warned that heavy use of social media services can harm the mental health of young users. They have called on large technology companies to take steps to make their services safer and more fitting for young users.
“I don’t think they’re taking steps to do that. The longer teens spend on the services, the more money the technology companies make,” said Irene Ly.She is a privacy advisor at the non-profit group Common Sense Media based in San Francisco, California.
28.Which of the following do American teens use most?
A.TikTok. B.Snapchat.
C.YouTube. D.Instagram.
29.How does the author develop the first half of the text?
A.By listing some numbers. B.By offering some surveys.
C.By providing some examples. D.By answering some questions.
30.What’s the purpose of the methods used by technology companies according to Paragraph 5?
A.To reduce harmful content. B.To make their services safer.
C.To make teens stay longer online. D.To offer better information for teens.
31.What do we learn about Irene Ly’s attitude to the technology companies?
A.She was surprised. B.She was dissatisfied.
C.She showed her support. D.She showed great interest.
D
Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to replace glass and plastic ones.Paper bottles aren’t quite ready to go yet, but you may see them appearing on shelves over the next few years.
Companies which sell liquids like drinks or shampoo rely on bottles for their packaging.Usually these bottles are made of plastic or glass. But as customers have become more concerned about the environment, many companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.
Paper bottles have many advantages.Perhaps the most important is that they should be easy to recycle.Paper bottles also weigh less than glass or plastic, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move around.Since paper is soft and easy to mold, companies can design their bottles to take almost any shape they choose.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own bottle designs, but they’re sharing what they learn, to speed up the development of paper bottle technology.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from leaking. The inside of the bottle needs a special coating to make sure the liquid doesn’t leak through. Many companies are lining their bottles with a thin sheet of plastic.
But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren’t perfect. Most paper bottles use wood pulp, meaning trees need to be cut down to make the bottles. That could harm animals and others who depend on the forests.
There’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace glass or plastic.Companies will need to see how long liquids can be stored in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t affect the taste.
But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near future.
32.Why have many companies begun to develop paper bottles?
A.To reduce the cost. B.To make more money.
C.To become more famous. D.To protect the environment.
33.In the author’s eyes, paper bottles aren’t perfect because .
A.they lead to the loss of forests B.the liquid may leak through them
C.they are not as strong as plastic ones D.they are more expensive than glass ones
34.What’s the author’s attitude to paper bottles’ appearing on shelves?
A.Unclear. B.Worried.
C.Confident. D.Doubtful.
35.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Paper Bottles May Produce New Problems
B.Companies Work to Develop Paper Bottles
C.Will Paper Bottles Replace Plastic Ones?
D.Are Paper Bottles Better Than Plastic Ones?

We are all different. We have different hair and different eyes. 36 So why in the world would we expect everyone to think and learn in the same way? As a matter of fact, it is not our differences that divide us.It is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences.
I’ll never forget meeting in high school a kid from Tonga named Fine Unga. 37 I mean the guy was built like a tank, strong as a bull.We looked, dressed, talked, thought, and ate differently. The only thing we had in common was football. So how in the world did we become best friends? 38 I never quite knew what Fine was thinking or what he would do next.He had strengths I didn’t have and I had strengths he didn’t have.Together we made a great team.
Boy, am I glad that the world isn’t full of a lot of clones who act and think exactly like me? 39 The word diversity usually calls to mind racial and gender (种族和性别) differences, but there’s so much more to it.There are also endless differences in language, physical features, family backgrounds, religious beliefs, lifestyles, interests, skills and so on.
40 Since this diversity around you is always expanding, you’ve got an important decision to make regarding how you’re going to handle it.There are three possible approaches you can take: Level 1: Avoid diversity.Level 2: Tolerate diversity.Level 3: Celebrate diversity.Let’s share our similarities and celebrate our differences.
A.Thank goodness for diversity.
B.At first, I was totally frightened by him.
C.Maybe it was because we were so different.
D.We like different foods and different stories.
E.Some people hate and avoid differences in our lives.
F.None of us are any better or any worse than anyone else.
G.The world is made up of different cultures, races, religions, and ideas.

(2024·太原高一上学期期中)When I was young, we lived in a small town.Everyone knew Roy as he was a top student in the town.He was of my age, but he lost his parents in an accident at the age of 8.So he lived alone and delivered newspapers to support himself and his education.
Every time he delivered newspapers to our home, he wore a broad smile on his face and greeted my mom gently. My mom was greatly surprised when she knew his daily routine. He got up every morning by 5 o’clock and walked 5 kilometers from where he lived to the newspaper office to collect the newspapers.By 6:00, he carried 50 pieces of newspapers — more than 5 kilograms and walked 3 kilometers back. After sending the newspapers, he rushed another 3 kilometers home to cook a simple breakfast before hurrying to school.
This morning, seeing he left hurriedly in a strong wind, my mom and I decided to do something for him. After school, I waited for him at the school gate and told him that my mom would like to invite him to our home. When he asked why, I replied, “You will know soon!” Thinking for a short while, he followed me to my home nearby. It was possible that he assumed my mom would continue to subscribe to the newspaper.

(Text 10)
It was my 21st birthday and I wanted to have an unforgettable night. So I arranged to have a party at this famous hotel. It was a warm evening in the middle of August, but because it was raining heavily outside we had to stay in the hotel all night. There were a lot of guests at the party and the room was packed. I was dancing when I saw the smoke. People began to panic, but there were so many of us that we couldn’t get out quickly. Soon the room was full of smoke. I managed to open a window and get out of the burning building. The fire fighters arrived shortly after, but it took a long time for them to put out the fire. Luckily, all the guests got out in time. Some of them had to go to hospital because of burns and breathing problems. Fortunately, the fire fighters had put out the fire before it spread to the rest of the hotel. However, the room where the party was held was completely destroyed. I was told later that it was because the building had been struck by lightning. Can you believe it?

Dear Jack,
It’s so lovely to hear from you. Thanks for your kind concern.

To make the most of this golden stage, first of all, I’ll work hard at all lessons to achieve academic success. In this way, I will hopefully attend my dream university.More importantly, I’ll improve my ability to survive and develop some practical skills, such as thinking independently, speaking in public, solving problems, and dealing with people.
What do you think of my ideas? Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours,

第二节
My mom stood at the door, waiting for us.As soon as she saw us, she rushed over to give us a big hug and then led us to the dining room.We invited Roy to join us for dinner, and though he hesitated at first, he eventually accepted. As my mom filled up his plate, he said it brought back memories of happy days spent with his parents.Later, as he prepared to leave, I stepped inside and brought out a new bike.“This is for you,” my mom said with a smile.
Seeing the bike in front of him, he couldn’t hold back his tears. With tears of gratitude rolling down his cheeks, he kept saying,“Thank you so much.” My mom wiped his tears and put her arm around his shoulders. We told him we were shocked to learn that he had to walk 11 miles before going to school. So we hoped this bike would make his life easier. We helped him because we admired him.

An important part of our lives is discovering what you’re good at.One
thing I know for sure is that everyone has a talent, a gift, something
they are good at.
After carving a beautiful sculpture, Michelangelo was asked how he
was able to do it.He replied by saying that the sculpture was already in the
block of rock from the very beginning; he just had to chisel (凿) off
everything else around it.
Likewise, Victor Frankl, a famous doctor, taught that we don’t
invent our talents in life but rather we discover them.In other words, you
are already born with your talents, and you just need to uncover them.
I’ll never forget my experience with finding a talent I never thought I
had.
To fulfill Mr Williams’s creative writing assignment for freshman
English, I excitedly turned in my first high school paper, entitled “The
Old Man and the Fish”.It was the same story my father had often told me at
bedtime while I was growing up.I just assumed he had made it up.He didn’t
bother telling me he had stolen the plot directly from Ernest Hemingway’s
award-winning novel The Old Man and the Sea.I was shocked when my
paper was returned with the remarks,“Sounds a bit .Like
Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.” “Who’s this guy Hemingway?”
I thought.“And how come he copied my dad?” That was my poor start to
four years of rather boring high school English classes.
trite
It wasn’t until college, when I took a short story class from an
amazing professor, that I began to discover my passion for writing. If you
can believe it, I even majored in English.Mr Williams would have felt
surprised.

New research suggests that nearly half of American teenagers say they
almost use the Internet all the time. The United States-based Pew Research
Center released a study this month. It found that the share of teens who say
they are online almost all the time rose from 24 percent in 2015 to 46
percent.
The research found that about 95 percent of American teens have
smartphones. The study also asked teens about their social media
behaviour. It found that the number of teens using Facebook has dropped to
32 percent, down from 71 percent in 2015.
The research shows that teens have moved away from Facebook to
spend time on the video sharing services like YouTube and TikTok.About
95 percent of teens said they use Google-owned YouTube, while 67
percent said they use TikTok.
About 62 percent of the teens said they use Instagram, which is
owned by Facebook’s parent company Meta.About 59 percent said they use
Snapchat.Less than one fourth of teens said they use Twitter.
Experts in online technology behaviour have accused large technology
companies of using some methods to get teens to spend more time on their
social media services. One method uses algorithms(算法) to repeatedly
suggest content to keep users on the services for longer periods of time.
Child rights groups have warned that heavy use of social media
services can harm the mental health of young users. They have called on
large technology companies to take steps to make their services safer and
more fitting for young users.
“I don’t think they’re taking steps to do that. The longer teens spend on
the services, the more money the technology companies make,” said
Irene Ly.She is a privacy advisor at the non-profit group Common Sense
Media based in San Francisco, California.

Several large companies have begun creating paper bottles to replace
glass and plastic ones.Paper bottles aren’t quite ready to go yet, but you
may see them appearing on shelves over the next few years.
Companies which sell liquids like drinks or shampoo rely on bottles
for their packaging.Usually these bottles are made of plastic or glass. But as
customers have become more concerned about the environment, many
companies have begun working to develop paper bottles.
Paper bottles have many advantages.Perhaps the most important is
that they should be easy to recycle.Paper bottles also weigh less than glass
or plastic, meaning they’ll require less energy to produce and to move
around.Since paper is soft and easy to mold, companies can design their
bottles to take almost any shape they choose.
A company called Paboco has been working with many large
companies to develop paper bottles. The companies are creating their own
bottle designs, but they’re sharing what they learn, to speed up the
development of paper bottle technology.
Clearly, one of the biggest challenges is keeping a paper bottle from
leaking. The inside of the bottle needs a special coating to make sure the
liquid doesn’t leak through. Many companies are lining their bottles with a
thin sheet of plastic.
But even without the plastic, paper bottles aren’t perfect. Most paper
bottles use wood pulp, meaning trees need to be cut down to make the
bottles. That could harm animals and others who depend on the forests.
There’s still lots of testing to be done before paper bottles can replace
glass or plastic.Companies will need to see how long liquids can be stored
in the bottles, and make sure the bottles don’t affect the taste.
But with so many companies working toward the same goal, it’s
likely that we can expect to see paper bottles on store shelves in the near
future.

and learn in the same way? As a matter of fact, it is not our
differences that divide us.It is our inability to recognise, accept, and
celebrate those differences.
I’ll never forget meeting in high school a kid from Tonga named
Fine Unga. 37 I mean the guy was built like a tank, strong as a
bull.We looked, dressed, talked, thought, and ate differently. The
only thing we had in common was football. So how in the world did we
become best friends? 38 I never quite knew what Fine was
thinking or what he would do next.He had strengths I didn’t have and I
had strengths he didn’t have.Together we made a great team.
Boy, am I glad that the world isn’t full of a lot of clones who act
and think exactly like me? 39 The word diversity usually calls to
mind racial and gender (种族和性别) differences, but there’s so
much more to it.There are also endless differences in language,
physical features, family backgrounds, religious beliefs,
lifestyles, interests, skills and so on.
40 Since this diversity around you is always expanding,
you’ve got an important decision to make regarding how you’re going
to handle it.There are three possible approaches you can take: Level
1: Avoid diversity.Level 2: Tolerate diversity.Level 3: Celebrate
diversity.Let’s share our similarities and celebrate our differences.
A. Thank goodness for diversity.
B. At first, I was totally frightened by him.
C. Maybe it was because we were so different.
D. We like different foods and different stories.
E. Some people hate and avoid differences in our lives.
F. None of us are any better or any worse than anyone else.
G. The world is made up of different cultures, races, religions, and
ideas.

(2024·太原高一上学期期中)When I was young, we lived in a
small town.Everyone knew Roy as he was a top student in the town.He was
of my age, but he lost his parents in an accident at the age of 8.So he
lived alone and delivered newspapers to support himself and his education.
Every time he delivered newspapers to our home, he wore a broad
smile on his face and greeted my mom gently. My mom was greatly
surprised when she knew his daily routine. He got up every morning by 5
o’clock and walked 5 kilometers from where he lived to the newspaper
office to collect the newspapers.By 6:00, he carried 50 pieces of
newspapers — more than 5 kilograms and walked 3 kilometers back. After
sending the newspapers, he rushed another 3 kilometers home to cook a
simple breakfast before hurrying to school.
This morning, seeing he left hurriedly in a strong wind, my mom
and I decided to do something for him. After school, I waited for him at
the school gate and told him that my mom would like to invite him to our
home. When he asked why, I replied, “You will know soon!” Thinking
for a short while, he followed me to my home nearby. It was possible that
he assumed my mom would continue to subscribe to the newspaper.

My mom stood at the door, waiting for us.As soon as she saw us,
she rushed over to give us a big hug and then led us to the dining room.We
invited Roy to join us for dinner, and though he hesitated at first, he
eventually accepted. As my mom filled up his plate, he said it brought
back memories of happy days spent with his parents.Later, as he prepared
to leave, I stepped inside and brought out a new bike.“This is for you,”
my mom said with a smile.
Seeing the bike in front of him, he couldn’t hold back his tears. With
tears of gratitude rolling down his cheeks, he kept saying,“Thank you
so much.” My mom wiped his tears and put her arm around his
shoulders. We told him we were shocked to learn that he had to walk 11
miles before going to school. So we hoped this bike would make his life
easier. We helped him because we admired him.
