The Chinese language differs from western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds. As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture.
Chinese characters began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese characters. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent (代表) different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified (简化) and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard (标准的) forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountain tops together. This became one mountain top and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects. Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a true. The character “prisoner” was formed with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down” which are opposite of each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings is that they do not show how they should be pronounced (发音). Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope of making learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
32 Which is NOT included in the process (过程) of inventing the first Chinese characters
A. Watching the footprints of animals. B. Creating shapes of objects.
C. Using different shapes. D. Drawing physical objects.
33. Which Chinese character used the underlined method
A. 山 B. 竹 C. 明 D. 妈
34. What can we learn from the passage
A. Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
B. Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
C. Chinese characters existed at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols.
D. Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together.
35. What might be the best title for the passage
A. How to Form Chinese Characters B. The Development of Chinese characters
C. The History of the Chinese Language D. The difference between Chinese and Western Language

①The first half of the year 2024 has seen a lot of new products, such as smart phones with new CPUs and self-driving cars. We, however, should know that these products aren’t inventions with new technology. They are just things using old technology which appeared long ago: the first CPU was produced in the 1960s and even the technology of self-driving is over 50 years old. It’s time for us to face the cold fact that the creation of new technology is coming to a halt (停滞).
②In fact, there hasn’t been much new human technology since the 1980s. And the reason for the difficulties in technological creation is simple: the easy creations have already been made, and now the hard ones are still on the way.
③For example, in the early 19th century, Samul Morse invented the telegram (电报) on his own within weeks. However, when it comes to the 20th century, a scientific breakthrough (突破) like nuclear power plants (核电站), took more top scientists many years to make. That leads to the slowing-down and even the halt of new technological creations.
④ ▲ . Two serious problems could be waiting for us. One is that the human population may be forced to stop growing, because limited (有限的) land on the earth can only produce limited food. Unless new technology appears to help double the food production, we can’t afford the ever-growth of the population.
⑤Another is that traveling freely among the stars may never come true. As we know, this kind of travel needs 85% of lightspeed or higher. With our present technology, rockets today can only fly at 1.5% of lightspeed, which stops us from exploring the outer space.
⑥So how can we turn this dark and hopeless future into a bright one Talented young inventors are using AI to put together the knowledge of countless scientists. Brave researchers on biology are working on super brains, which may help humans have much better memories and thinking abilities. Actually, we all should be responsible for the scientific breakthrough. Only through the efforts of all us humans can we have a bright future.
36. How does the writer show it’s harder to make new creations now in Paragraph 3
A. By comparing facts. B. By listing numbers.
C. By telling stories. D. By asking questions.
37. Which is the best sentence to be put in the ▲
A. Human population may be badly influenced by the halt.
B. The result of technological halt can be quite worrying.
C. Technological halt could have both good and bad results on us.
D. New technology will be brought to a bright future.
38. What can we infer from the passage
A. Smart phones are inventions with new technology.
B. Rockets in the future will be able to fly at 85% of lightspeed.
C. It’s us humans’ duty to realize the science breakthrough.
D. AI and research on biology may lead new technology to appear.
39. What’s the best structure for this passage
A. B.
C. D.

Chongqing International Logistics Hub Park (物流园区) was built in September, 2007. The area is 22 square kilometers. This park is very important for Chongqing’s plan to grow with a nearby city, open up western China to the sea, and become a place that welcomes trade from far away. It’s like a key door for China to connect with the world. There are 62 train lines going to over 100 countries and more than 500 harbors. A special road called the New Road to the Sea from the West goes through the park. It was named in 2019. It joins the old Silk Road roads in the north and reaches out to the new Ocean Silk Road in the south. Chongqing is a city with a mix of big city life, countryside, mountains and so on. The Minzhucun Neighborhood is in Xiejiawan. It was built from the 1950s to the 1990s. As a housing area for the workers of a big factory, it was really crowded and old. At the start of 2022, the Minzhucun Neighborhood started to renovate (更新). In the Minzhucun Neighborhood, the culture and building styles are kept, and the old city’s shape and feel go on. Long blue stone steps, red brick houses, and big Camphor trees are now part of its new city memories. Living in the neighborhood, people can feel the beauty of old and new things together and enjoy their lives.
Chongqing’s Digital City Management Center (数字城市管理中心) is in Jiangbei. This is a big center in Chongqing city that helps control and run the city. It’s like a brain for the city. It collects information about things like water, electricity, gas, roads, bridges, and tunnels. This helps the city, districts (地区) and neighborhoods work together very well. This makes the city work faster and better. For example, if a car is not following the rules, they can send the short message to the owner in seconds. During the summer vacation, I happily went to a party that my classmates organized. When I arrived at the place, I was shocked to see that everyone was looking at their smartphones. There was almost no interaction between them. I felt sad and upset.
I decided to do something to change the situation. I suggested that we put away our phones and play some indoor games or do some outdoor activities like climbing mountains or playing sports. At first, some of my classmates were reluctant, but after I explained my idea, they agreed to try.
We started playing games and having real conversations. Gradually, the atmosphere became lively and everyone started to enjoy themselves. We laughed, shared stories, and had a great time together.
Through this experience, I realized that we should spend less time on the Internet and more time interacting with each other face-to-face. We should also enjoy the beauty of nature and relax ourselves.
