If you need one more reason to be thankful, here it is. More and more researchers are finding that appreciation doesn’t just make you feel like a better person, it’s actually good for your health.
“The practice of appreciation can have great and lasting effects on a person’s life,” said Robert Emmons, professor of psychology at UC Davis. “It can lower blood pressure, improve immune (有免疫力的) function and help a much better sleep.”
One recent study finds that people who are more grateful actually have better heart health, especially healthier heart rhythms. “They show a better well-being, a less depressed mood, and they sleep better,” said the study’s author, Paul J. Mills. “When I am more grateful, I feel life is nicer and is full of hope. That’s the opposite of what stress does.”
Another study found that appreciation can improve your immune system. Researchers at the universities of Utah and Kentucky observed that stressed-out law students who characterized themselves as optimistic actually had more disease-fighting cells in their bodies.
Having a daily appreciation practice could actually reduce the effects of aging on the brain. “Being thankful has such a great effect because of the feelings that go along with it,” Emmons said. “Appreciation works because, as a way of understanding life, it brings other positive emotions that have direct physical benefits, most likely through the immune system.”
“Some people say they don’t have anything to be grateful for” Mills said. “If you take such a person to find one little thing to be grateful for and focus on that, you find over time that the feeling of appreciation can change the way they see their lives.”
4. How is the passage developed
A. By presenting research findings. B. By making comparisons.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By giving examples.
5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Stress sometimes plays an active part.
B. People feeling grateful to others are free from stress.
C. Appreciation only serves as a way of understanding life.
D. People feeling stressed may have a negative attitude to life.
6. Why does the author mention law students in Paragraph 4
A. To advise us to be optimistic.
B. To show that they are under great stress.
C. To find a way to increase disease-fighting cells.
D. To prove that gratitude is good for people’s health.
7. What does Mills say about gratitude
A. It can change people’s way of life. B. It makes one much younger.
C. It is a skill that can be learned. D. It is up to one’s attitude to his life.
C
Curiosity — the desire to know, to discover, to learn. Inspired by curiosity, humans are found everywhere on our planet, and beyond it in space. Yet according to human behaviourist and author of Curious, Ian Leslie, although we are all born curious, not all of us bring this into adulthood, and we can lose out as a result.
As Leslie explains, curiosity shapes us from the start. By trying new things, we build knowledge, and want to know more. “We are born aware that we don’t know stuff — we want to experience and discover.” However, the contrast between childhood and adulthood is clear. “We ask 40,000 questions a year between the ages of two and five,” says Leslie — around 110 each day; adults, in comparison, ask just 20.
As we get older, we may feel hesitant about asking questions, believing this reveals gaps in our knowledge. We can become scared to share unconventional ideas for fear of criticism or misunderstanding. We can also be a victim of our success, as Leslie explains. “Once you’ve worked out how to do your job, then you don’t feel curious anymore. The need to learn goes away — in a way, curiosity has done its job. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t cultivate it.”
Leslie’s tips for cultivating curiosity begin with spending time with the experts — children. “Talk to your kids, and try to answer those weird, difficult questions they have — like ‘What is air ’ This makes you think about things you’ve taken for granted — it reawakens your curiosity in what’s around us and how we perceive the world.”
So does finding what Leslie calls an ‘informal mentor’, through work or other circles, who is happy to share their expertise, from a skill, technology, to a field of learning. “Try to think of people the way children think of adults — as sources of secret knowledge, a great store of learning you can tap into,” says Leslie.
Leslie also suggests creating a ‘spark file’ — a digital or physical notebook in which you collect interesting thoughts. “Fill it with facts you’ve come across, sentences you like, insights that strike you. Let it be random. And let it build. Over time you’ll build up a rich source of inspiration, and you’ll think, ‘Oh that’s interesting, that relates to this…’ And suddenly your mind starts firing away with new ideas and ways of thinking.”
8. According to Leslie, what happens as we get older
A. We gradually lose our natural curiosity.
B. We are less aware of our knowledge gaps.
C. We are unwilling to let others benefit from our ideas.
D. We may think asking questions makes people foolish.
9. Which of the following sayings might Leslie agree with
A. A day’s planning is best done at daybreak.
B. In the eyes of a lover, Xi Shi will appear.
C. A master can lead you to the door, but the rest is up to you.
D. When three people walk together, one can surely be my teacher.
10. Which of the following is a characteristic of a ‘spark file’
A. It is carefully organized. B. It can help people connect ideas.
C. It only contains complete sentences. D. It can help people improve their memory.
11. What is the writer’s aim in this passage
A. To prove Ian Leslie’s arguments. B. To summarise Ian Leslie’s viewpoint.
C. To question Ian Leslie’s conclusions. D. To introduce Ian Leslie’s achievements.
D
According to Dr. Shaison P. Ouseph, there are three main types of artificial intelligence: Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and Artificial Super Intelligence (ASI). ANI is the only type of artificial intelligence we have successfully realized to date.
The idea of the world being controlled by self-thinking robots who want to destroy humanity is still much in science fiction, more than science fact. Some experts think that AGI and ASI are now still out of our reach, so we don’t need to worry too much about that specific situation.
However, that is not to say that AI won’t ever seriously threaten our world and society if used incorrectly. AI could easily be programmed to do something damaging. On the other hand, AI is already taking over the world in the fields of medicine and manufacturing. Many of these could change technology and industry to benefit our lives if implemented (实施) responsibly. But as we use these new systems, we must stay ahead in terms of regulating new technologies where there is potential to do harm.
For now, the greatest concern we face with regard to ANI technologies, is the situation of efficient automation causing many human jobs to become no longer needed. So we need to start thinking seriously now about how young people are going to live with these technologies.
The world is going to move forward in one direction or another. ANI is here to stay for the foreseeable future, and it’s the youth of today who are going to define the use of these technologies. Yet, there is relatively little research and information about how AI will influence young people and their transition into a world where life is changing. “This is what my team will focus on,” said Dr. Shaison.
As new systems progress we need to safeguard what is fundamentally important to human life, and make sure that our youth will continue to have autonomy (自主权) regarding their well- being and have more opportunities for success than previous generations.
12. What does the author think of robots taking over the world
A. It is a branch of ANI. B. It is rooted in science fact.
C. It is just impossible at present. D. It should cause people great concern.
13. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3
A. AI can be easily programmed and used.
B. AI development needs more creative design.
C. We should be cautious about the influence of AI.
D. We should be confident and trust AI in many fields.
14. What should people be most concerned about regarding ANI
A. The efficiency of AI machines. B. The loss of jobs in the market.
C. The direction of AI technologies. D. The guarantee of human well-being.
15. What will Dr Shaison’s research focus on in the future
A. Necessity of AI to human life.
B. Youths’ adaptation to future AI.
C. Opportunities for the young generation.
D. Humanity problems caused by AI technologies.

Pain is part of growing
Sometimes life closes doors because it’s time to move forward. That’s a good thing because we often won’t move unless life forces us to. When times are tough, remind yourself that no pain comes without a purpose. ____17____When you roll with life, instead of resisting it, both kinds help you grow.
Everything in life is temporary.

____19____It’s always better to attempt to do something great and fail than to attempt to do nothing and succeed. It’s not over if you’ve lost; it’s over when you do nothing but complain about it. If you believe in something, keep trying. Don’t let the shadows of the past darken the doorstep of your future.
____20____
Don’t be afraid to get back up — to try again, to love again, to live again, and to dream again. Don’t let a hard lesson harden your heart. It was the middle of July when we drove way up into the mountains and backpacked up a stream. The banks were lined with old trees. We waded (涉水) through the cold water, our backpacks balanced on our heads.
We set up camp on a sandy flat beside a pool. What a swimming hole! My brother and I swam, diving and playing in the clear water. We-hiked upstream, against little rapids. Suddenly we heard a roaring sound, and as we came around a bend, we saw what was causing it.
A huge waterfall! It rose high above us. “Wow!” I said. “Let’s climb it!” “No way,” said Dad. “End of the road.” We turned back but I couldn’t stop thinking about the waterfall and how much I’d like to climb it. Later, lying in my bag, I thought of the waterfall, wondering what was on the top... then finally I fell asleep.
The sun was hot as a bonfire. We cut leaves as wide as elephants’ ears, and tied them on our heads to keep us cool. Then we waded against the little rapids deep into the stream. I was the first one to the waterfall. “Let’s go up. I think there must be something unique out there,” I said. My brother smiled. “If you go, I will,” he said.
I found a way alongside the falls, and then we climbed like mountain goats. Mom shouted, “Be careful!” And we inched our way up and up—the tips of our toes gripping thin ledges (岩石突出部分), our fingers finding cracks. Sometimes rocks were unstable, but we clung (粘住) like glue. We had to.
The waterfall roared by our ears. “I’m scared,” said my brother. I said, “Just don’t look down.” Near the top, a tree grew out of the rock. It was just what we needed. When we stood at the top, we clapped our hands and shouted down, “Hey Mom, Dad! It’s like a whole other world up here! Come on up! You can do it!” And I did a little dance.

【47题答案】
【答案】One possible version:
Mom looked at Dad and Dad looked at Mom. Then Mom started climbing, and Dad followed—I couldn’t believe my eyes! I lay on my stomach and shouted directions. “No, not that ledge—try the one up to your right!” I never felt more anxious—seeing my parents clinging to that smooth rock—or more proud, either. Then I heard a shout and my heart jumped into my mouth. But it was a shout of victory! My parents pulled themselves up, up, and over the top.
“We did it!” Mom shouted, breathing hard. “You did it!” I also shouted excitedly. “Dad, I thought you said it couldn’t be done!” “It can’t,” he said. Together we burst out laughing. Then after a short rest, we continued upstream. Along the way we saw special scenery up there, which gave us great joy and left us an unforgettable impression. This experience made my heart feel big and wild, and I believe that success belongs to the brave.
