A
Brushing my teeth, I heard what sounded like branches scraping (刮擦) the roof.I paused, wondering what it could be.Then I thought that must have been Hurricane Isabel, which was blowing her way through our city in September 2003.
Then I heard the sound of breaking glass.A second later, the entire house shook. My husband and I stared at each other in frozen horror before rushing to check on our baby daughter asleep in her bed.The sound had scared her awake — never had a cry sounded so sweet — and my husband gratefully snatched (抱起) her up and ran to the relative safety of our room.
Then we ventured out.My husband started the car while I hurried across the street to let a neighbour know we were okay and heading to a friend’s home.Shaking but grateful to be alive, we drove away.
The next morning, bright sunlight clearly displayed the storm’s destruction. We returned home to see that a giant tree in the center of our yard had effectively split our house in two!
As we stood on the sidewalk wondering what to do, a local fire truck pulled up.The firefighters informed us that our home had received the worst damage in the city. When we meet neighbours for the first time, their eyes pop when they realise we live in the house the tree fell through.
In the days and weeks that followed, we remembered the feeling of relief when we realised that everyone in our lives who mattered was unscathed — me, my husband, our daughter and even our two pets.
Yes, we lost many things. But those things were replaceable and the damage was temporary.
Every so often we pull out the photos of the tree’s destruction and feel surprised at how blessed we were — and still are.Whenever we begin to feel ungrateful or unsatisfied with what we have, those photos and memories offer a reminder of how we came through that trial.

As a teenager, nothing really matters to you except your plans for the weekend, your latest hobbies, or what you’re wearing to school tomorrow. That’s how I was until the summer I met someone I will remember forever.
It was July and my family went to Orlando for a weeklong vacation. There I played with a little girl named Jenna and we soon became good friends.

Operation day rolled around and everything went smoothly. However, Jenna didn’t wake up until two days later. While the whole tumor was removed, there were still some issues.Luckily, she came home on 25 January, after about two months in the hospital.
Then the day came when my mom and I fulfilled my birthday promise.I went to Jenna’s house and spent her sixth birthday with her, going to the park, watching TV, playing with dolls, eating cake, and — best of all — opening presents! It was nice to spend time with my little friend again.
Now, Jenna is as healthy as any normal six-year-old.Our families are close, and we’re looking forward to our summer reunion in Orlando.Going through Jenna’s ordeal made me realise that life isn’t all about what you’re doing with your friends.I know that our elders are supposed to be the ones with the most wisdom, but Jenna has taught me a lesson that I’ll never forget.

Having a workout (锻炼) partner can be very helpful. Whether it’s walking around the neighbourhood after the evening meal or cycling for the better part of a weekend, each workout partner can encourage the other and praise his or her efforts. The support of a workout partner can help people take and give encouragement as well as learn to care about the needs of others.Having a workout partner requires us to keep our promises to each other.
Some people may work at a job with a limited social circle as well as limited time to exercise. By exercising with a workout partner, the two needs can be met at the same time.People with similar activity preferences as well as time schedules can become good exercise partners. For example, two stay-at-home mothers with small children may decide to walk together around their neighbourhood several afternoons a week while taking their babies.
Members of a gym may choose the same days and times to work out so the chance they’ll actually go to the gym is increased.Having a gym partner can serve as a good reason to make use of one’s membership.A more experienced gym workout partner may make a newcomer feel more comfortable about using different exercise machines.Of course, the skill levels of both partners should be fair, or the more experienced person may not feel helpful.
While it should be made clear that running outdoors with another person doesn’t mean that an accident or being hit by a car can’t happen, it does mean an extra set of eyes and ears.A running workout partner relationship should mean that both parties should protect their own and the other person’s safety.Running with a partner during daylight is generally safer than working out alone in a quiet and dark environment.

The Daily News TSUNAMI HITS ASIA:OVER 6,500 DEAD By Robert Woodhouse Monday, 27 December 2004 [1]The most powerful earthquake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday, killing more than 6,500 people in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and at least four other countries.Fishermen, tourists, hotels, homes, and cars were swept away by huge waves caused by the strong earthquake that reached a magnitude of 9.0.The undersea quake struck around 7:00 a.m., Sunday off the west coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. In that area alone, at least 1,870 people were killed. In Sri Lanka, some 1,600 kilometres west of the quake centre, the number of deaths stood at 2,498, and one million more were affected by the tsunami, government officials said.Indian officials said as many as 1,900 had been killed along the southern coast.Another 254 were found dead in Thailand and 54 in three other countries. In southern Thailand, 1,900 people were hurt and many more were missing, local officials said.[2]“I was having breakfast with my three children when water started filling my home. We had to leave everything and run to safety,” said Chandra Theeravit, a local Thai woman. [2]本句运用了“be doing sth when ...” Thousands of people are still missing, and the number of deaths is expected to grow even higher over the next few days.Foreign aid is being organised for the tsunami-hit countries. However, dangerous conditions and damaged roads will make it difficult to deliver food and supplies. 学语言: Para.1 1. 2.本段第一句中使用了that引导的定语从句(that crashed into coastlines ...)和动词-ing短语作状语(killing more than 6,500 people ...);第二句使用了过去分词短语作后置定语(caused by the strong earthquake)以及that引导的定语从句(that reached a magnitude of 9.0),这些高级句式的运用使得文章精彩纷呈。 Paras.2 & 3 1. 2.第二、三段使用了被动语态;be doing ... when ..., make+it+形容词+to do sth等高级句式彰显了作者较强的语言功底。

Your hunger doesn’t necessarily mean you are really hungry. It is an important sign of what is happening in your body — physically, emotionally and mentally.Sounds strange? It is true and here in this article we shall discuss certain things that your hunger is trying to tell you.
When you feel hungry, try to figure out if you are really hungry.Sometimes when you think that you are hungry, you might be thirsty. It is possible that you have been dehydrated (脱水) for a long time and your body is sending a signal through your hunger. So instead of eating, go for water at the earliest.
If you feel hungry all the time, it could mean that you are depriving (剥夺) yourself of certain foods and hence the body is craving for these. If you are on a strict diet, then go for foods rich in protein along with complex carbohydrates (碳水化合物) like quinoa and brown rice that will take you a long time to digest and will keep you full for a long period of time.
You might get hungry for a certain kind of food only at times. This is because you become emotional about certain foods. For example, if you are happy and celebrating your anniversary, you might end up having a desire for the cake that you brought to celebrate the special occasion. This is called emotional eating.
Sometimes your hunger might mean that you need to take a break. When you end up working at a stretch, and you do not realise that your body needs rest, you can end up feeling hungry as it is a way your body is telling you to break free from work.
Sometimes when you are bored or stressed out, you might feel hungry. It is the body’s way of telling you that you need a change of scene.Go out, take a walk, talk to your dearest friend or simply take some deep breaths.Even after this, if you feel hungry, do eat.

Step 1
The Daily News
TSUNAMI HITS ASIA:OVER 6,500 DEAD
By Robert Woodhouse Monday, 27 December 2004
[1]The most powerful earthquake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday, killing more than 6,500
people in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and at least four
other countries.Fishermen, tourists, hotels, homes, and cars were
swept away by huge waves caused by the strong earthquake that reached a
magnitude of 9.0.The undersea quake struck around 7:00 a.m., Sunday
off the west coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. In that area alone, at
least 1,870 people were killed.
  [1]句中关系代词that引导定语从句,修饰先行词tsunami;
killing ...
In Sri Lanka, some 1,600 kilometres west of the quake centre, the
number of deaths stood at 2,498, and one million more were affected by
the tsunami, government officials said.Indian officials said as many as
1,900 had been killed along the southern coast.Another 254 were found
dead in Thailand and 54 in three other countries. In southern Thailand,
1,900 people were hurt and many more were missing, local officials
said.[2]“I was having breakfast with my three children when water started
filling my home. We had to leave everything and run to safety,” said
Chandra Theeravit, a local Thai woman.
  [2]本句运用了“be doing sth when ...”
Thousands of people are still missing, and the number of deaths is
expected to grow even higher over the next few days.Foreign aid is being
organised for the tsunami-hit countries. However, dangerous conditions
and damaged roads will make it difficult to deliver food and supplies.
Step 2
Para.1
2. 本段第一句中使用了that引导的定语从句(that crashed into
coastlines ...)和动词-ing短语作状语(killing more than 6,500
people ...);第二句使用了过去分词短语作后置定语(caused by the
strong earthquake)以及that引导的定语从句(that reached a
2. 第二、三段使用了被动语态;be doing ...when ..., make+it+形容

later、 finally、 besides、 thus、 therefore、 yet);
Your hunger doesn’t necessarily mean you are really hungry. It is an
important sign of what is happening in your body — physically,
emotionally and mentally.Sounds strange? It is true and here in this article
we shall discuss certain things that your hunger is trying to tell you.
When you feel hungry, try to figure out if you are really
hungry.Sometimes when you think that you are hungry, you might be
thirsty. It is possible that you have been dehydrated (脱水) for a long
time and your body is sending a signal through your hunger. So instead of
eating, go for water at the earliest.
If you feel hungry all the time, it could mean that you are depriving
(剥夺) yourself of certain foods and hence the body is craving for
these. If you are on a strict diet, then go for foods rich in protein along
with complex carbohydrates (碳水化合物) like quinoa and brown rice
that will take you a long time to digest and will keep you full for a long
period of time.
You might get hungry for a certain kind of food only at
times. This is because you become emotional about certain foods. For
example, if you are happy and celebrating your anniversary, you might
end up having a desire for the cake that you brought to celebrate the special
occasion.This is called emotional eating.
Sometimes your hunger might mean that you need to take a
break. When you end up working at a stretch, and you do not realise that
your body needs rest, you can end up feeling hungry as it is a way your
body is telling you to break free from work.
Sometimes when you are bored or stressed out, you might feel
hungry. It is the body’s way of telling you that you need a change of
scene.Go out, take a walk, talk to your dearest friend or simply take
some deep breaths.Even after this, if you feel hungry, do eat.

A
Brushing my teeth, I heard what sounded like branches scraping
(刮擦) the roof.I paused, wondering what it could be.Then I thought
that must have been Hurricane Isabel, which was blowing her way
through our city in September 2003.
Then I heard the sound of breaking glass.A second later, the entire
house shook. My husband and I stared at each other in frozen horror before
rushing to check on our baby daughter asleep in her bed.The sound had
scared her awake — never had a cry sounded so sweet — and my husband
gratefully snatched (抱起) her up and ran to the relative safety of our
room.
Then we ventured out.My husband started the car while I hurried
across the street to let a neighbour know we were okay and heading to a
friend’s home.Shaking but grateful to be alive, we drove away.
The next morning, bright sunlight clearly displayed the storm’s
destruction. We returned home to see that a giant tree in the center of our
yard had effectively split our house in two!
As we stood on the sidewalk wondering what to do, a local fire truck
pulled up.The firefighters informed us that our home had received the
worst damage in the city. When we meet neighbours for the first time,
their eyes pop when they realise we live in the house the tree fell through.
In the days and weeks that followed, we remembered the feeling of
relief when we realised that everyone in our lives who mattered was
unscathed — me, my husband, our daughter and even our two pets.
Yes, we lost many things. But those things were replaceable and the
damage was temporary.
Every so often we pull out the photos of the tree’s destruction and feel
surprised at how blessed we were — and still are.Whenever we begin to
feel ungrateful or unsatisfied with what we have, those photos and
memories offer a reminder of how we came through that trial.

Having a workout (锻炼) partner can be very helpful.Whether it’s
walking around the neighbourhood after the evening meal or cycling for the
better part of a weekend, each workout partner can encourage the other
and praise his or her efforts. The support of a workout partner can help
people take and give encouragement as well as learn to care about the
needs of others.Having a workout partner requires us to keep our promises
to each other.
Some people may work at a job with a limited social circle as well as
limited time to exercise.By exercising with a workout partner, the two
needs can be met at the same time.People with similar activity preferences
as well as time schedules can become good exercise partners. For
example, two stay-at-home mothers with small children may decide to
walk together around their neighbourhood several afternoons a week while
taking their babies.
Members of a gym may choose the same days and times to work out
so the chance they’ll actually go to the gym is increased.Having a gym
partner can serve as a good reason to make use of one’s membership.A
more experienced gym workout partner may make a newcomer feel more
comfortable about using different exercise machines.Of course, the skill
levels of both partners should be fair, or the more experienced person
may not feel helpful.
While it should be made clear that running outdoors with another
person doesn’t mean that an accident or being hit by a car can’t happen, it
does mean an extra set of eyes and ears.A running workout partner
relationship should mean that both parties should protect their own and the
other person’s safety.Running with a partner during daylight is generally
safer than working out alone in a quiet and dark environment.
