(2024·沧州十校高一下学期月考)The Water Splashing (泼)
Festival marks the official New Year
celebration for over one million Dai
people living in China, mainly in
Xishuangbanna and Dehong
prefectures of Yunnan.It generally
starts in mid-April and lasts for three
days.
Originating in Persia in the 5th century, the water splashing ritual
spread to China at the end of the 12th century along with Hinayana
Buddhism and gradually became a folk custom among the Dai.It is also
widely celebrated in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar as their
grandest festivals of the year.
On the first two days of the festival, people clean their houses,
have their hair cut, and take baths.Various activities are also
staged. Many send burning lanterns into the air, dance and sing on the
streets, and watch colourful dragon boat races on the Lancang River. At
night, they write down their New Year wishes on paper lanterns and
release(释放) them along the Lancang River.
On the third day of the festival, which marks the first day of the
New Year on the Dai calendar.Festival celebrations start in the early
morning with young Dai girls collecting holy water from the Lancang
River. This is then followed by a Buddha bathing ceremony which signals
the official start of the Water Splashing Festival.People often visit a temple
in the morning to wash Buddha statues in clean water. After bathing the
Buddha, the mass water splashing begins.People use anything at hand to
dunk others in water, from friends and neighbours to strangers on the
street, as an expression of their washing away bad luck and bringing
good luck to whoever is on the receiving end.
Dai people believe that water is sacred, symbolizes purity and is the
source of all life. The Water Splashing Festival was initially only
celebrated as a symbolic gesture with people sprinkling holy water for
good fortune, as an act of respect and to bring blessings.Nowadays, the
religious act has evolved into a tourist event, attracting people from
across the country and even the world to participate in the fun.

  (2024·南京高一下学期质检)When I was a child, my mother
advised me to try everything three times.
As I grew older, I brought that three-times philosophy into my daily
life.I had been terrified of the diving board at the pool, but I had
managed to make that first terrifying jump off the board. When I breathed
in water, my mother, who was carefully watching me, jumped in to
help me.Before she could even reach me, I was up and out of the pool,
heading back to that diving board.I barely paused before I jumped off the
second time. When I got out of the pool the second time, my mom tried
to cover me with a towel and take me home.Instead, I threw off the
towel and finished my mission.
The third time there was no fear and no water in my nose.In fact there
were cheers from the others at the pool.At that point, I was addicted to
diving. For the next few summers, you couldn’t pull me out of the
water.I have still never met a pool I didn’t want to jump right in.
Every time I am faced with something that is outside my comfort
zone, I repeat to myself that I must try everything three times, and it
gives me the strength to go ahead. From public speaking to job
interviews, how am I going to know the outcome unless I go for it?
Roller coasters, flying, changing careers, dating ...Sure, he may
have not been great on the first date, but perhaps the second or third
would be better ...This thought process even led to my marriage!
My life has been full because my brain repeats this one simple rule:
Try everything three times.
