He was there every morning, sitting motionless (面无表情的) on the front steps of his house. Each morning I walked this road with my daughter to her kindergarten class. We were new to the neighborhood so that I didn’t know many of my neighbors. On one beautiful autumn morning, as we passed his house, my daughter called out to him, “Hi, Mr. Man!” Always the outgoing child, I wasn’t surprised at her enthusiasm (热情). But her cheerfulness soon faded (消退) when the man didn’t look at her or say “Hi” back.
As we continued on our walk to school, my daughter asked why the man didn’t want to say hi to her. Because I didn’t have an answer, I said simply, “May be he is having a bad day.” Later I knew that Bob lost his wife in a car accident.
A few days later, as we approached Bob’s house on our way to school, my daughter called out “Hi, Mr. Man!” and as usual, he didn’t respond. But then she ran onto his front lawn and picked up a beautiful red autumn leaf. She continued up one step and handed it to him. I held my breath.
As she skipped back to me, she said, “See you tomorrow, Mr. Man!” This time, he acknowledged (搭理) her. In a soft gentle voice, he thanked her and said, “See you tomorrow.”

It’s so easy to forget things you have. And that’s not just the things in your home—in the age of new information, we can have so many things easily. Today is all about remembering the things we sometimes leave behind.
We’ve learned to value(重视) what age can bring to things. Wines, for example, are more valuable and tastier as they grow older. It’s certain that old things still have their uses or charm(魅力). People today will pay a pretty penny for stamps, toys, video games, books, coins, and clothes of yesterday.
You can really get into the charm of old things by visiting a junk shop(旧货店). Another person’s old stuff could be your new stuff! Old stuff could become a great gift for someone else, or you could always send your old things to a charity(慈善) shop. If you’re free, you could turn your old things like old clothes into new ones with just a little change.
Today could be a good day to visit your older family. You could ask your grandparents to tell you stories about family history, their childhood and their youth. Learn about what was going on in the world when they were growing up.

The Double Ninth Festival, also named the Chongyang Festival, falls on the ninth day of the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people would like to drink chrysanthemum (菊花) wine. The Chinese word for wine is Jiu, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word for “long”, which means “forever”. Another special food for this festival is chrysanthemum cakes. The Chinese word for cake is Gao, a similar pronunciation of the Chinese word “high”, showing great progress at work and in daily life.
It is hard to say when these customs began. But there are many stories about the festival. As was recorded in a historical book of the sixth century, there lived a man named Huan Jing. He was learning the magic arts from Fei Changfang. One day, the two people were climbing a mountain. Fei Changfang suddenly stopped and looked very upset. He told Huan Jing, “On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, a disaster will come to your hometown. You must go home at once. Remember to make a red bag for each of your family members. Then you must all tie your bags to your arms, leave home quickly and climb to the top of a mountain. Most importantly, you must all drink some chrysanthemum wine. Only by doing so can your family members be safe.”
On hearing this, Huan Jing rushed home and asked his family to do as his teacher said. The whole family climbed a nearby mountain and did not return until the evening. When they got back home, they found all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dogs and even the ox.
Since then, climbing a mountain and drinking chrysanthemum wine became the traditional activities of the Double Ninth Festival.
