We all know that the British people love their manners (礼仪). They are part of their national identity (特性), as well as having fish and chips and complaining about the weather. Recently I read online that they say “sorry” up to eight times a day.
After some research I have not been able to find any specific reasons why they are like this. I suppose, for centuries, manners, including how they behave at table and talk to other people have been one of the differences between the lower and upper classes and those manners show their social classes. Britain has traditionally been a quite conservative (保守的) country. There are many articles suggesting that their seemingly polite attitude of always saying “please” and “thank you” is quite false because it is impossible for a person to always feel that he or she wants to thank someone or say “please”.
Maybe it is for this reason that people are going one of two ways: they are too polite and hold back their feelings or they are not polite at all and express their true feelings directly. Some British people are tired of pretending that they are always happy and having to please others. But sometimes because they feel they have to be polite, they are prevented from saying what they truly think.
11.What don’t the British people often do
A.Eating fish and chips. B.Having no good manners.
C.Being polite to others. D.Talking about the weather.
12.The British people say “_________” up to eight times every day.
A.hello B.thank you C.I don’t know D.sorry
13.According to the passage, why are the British people so polite
① The upper classes should have good manners.
② They have learned much about politeness at school.
③ They like to hold back their true feelings.

15.Which can be the best title for this passage
A.Why British People Are So Polite B.British People Should Not Be So Polite
C.How to Learn the British Manners D.It’s Time to Change Our Manners
B
Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all whether rich or poor, clever or stupid—one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough. In such countries we find a far larger number of people with university degree. They refuse to do what they think “low” work, and, in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor (教授). We can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns...
In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and, secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that it is very bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
16.The writer of the passage thinks that ______.
A.free education won’t help to solve problems
B.education can solve most of the world’s problems
C.free education for all probably leads to a perfect world
D.all the social problems can’t be solved by education
17.The purpose of education is ______.
A.to choose officials for the country B.to build a perfect world
C.to let everyone receive education D.to prepare children mainly for their future work
18.What does the underlined word “fashionable” mean
A.new B.old C.popular D.possible
19.The writer wants to show it’s true that ______.
A.our society needs all kinds of jobs B.our society needs free education for all
C.a farmer is more important than a professor D.work with hands is the most important
20.The passage tells us about ______ of the education.
A.the means B.the system C.the value D.the type
C
We talked with June Galloway about her book Get off on the Right Foot: Don’t Let the Wrong Gesture (手势) Ruin Your Day.
English is an international language. But in your book, communication without words is paid more attention to. ▲
June:Well, gestures and other body languages have different meanings in different places. Something that you think is friendly or polite could be considered to be very impolite in another culture. I’ve described many of these customs and cultural differences, so my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot when they meet people from places where the culture is different from their own.
Can greeting someone the wrong way really lead to misunderstanding
June:In some places, yes. The heavy handshake that a North American expects may seem quite impolite in other places. And a light handshake—which is usual in some countries—may seem unfriendly to a North American.
What other gestures can cause misunderstanding
June:Take the gesture for “Come here” for example. In North America, people gesture with the palm(掌心) up. Well, in southern Europe, that gesture means “goodbye”. And in many Asian countries, the palm-up gesture is thought rude. Instead, people there gesture with the palm down.
Surely, there must be some gestures used everywhere, right What about the thumb-up(翘拇指)gesture for “great”
June:Sorry. That’s very rude in Australia and the Middle East. That is why it’s important to know about body language and cultural differences.
21.Which of the following can be put in ▲
A.How is it going B.Why is that so important
C.Can you give us some examples D.Could it make readers interested
22.What does June mean by saying “my readers won’t get off on the wrong foot”
A.Her readers won’t hurt others. B.Her readers won’t have a bad start.
C.Her readers won’t know how to walk. D.Her readers will always know where to go.
23.Which gesture should you use if you want to say “goodbye” in southern Europe
A. B. C. D.
24.According to the passage, which is NOT mentioned in June’s book
A.Some common gestures. B.Different meanings of a gesture.
C.The importance of body language. D.The development of body language.
25.Which of the following is TRUE
A.A light handshake is quite polite in North America.
B.June mainly talks about the English language in her book.
C.The book is helpful to those who often travel around the world.
D.If you want to say “great” to an Australian, just make a thumb-up gesture.
D
At table, the British people pay special attention to table manners. For example, they shouldn’t talk at table or beat tableware (餐具). They have a strict requirement on how to use knives and forks, while Americans seldom do so. They like fast and convenient food. American’s favorite food are hamburgers, fried chicken and pizza. These diets keep the American obesity rate high. But from the diet habits, it is not difficult for us to find that the American do everything vigorously (活泼地) and resolutely and do not spend too much on the trifles (琐事).
There are also lots of different manners between Americans and Chinese, and some are totally even opposite. For Americans, when friends gather together, they do not like to talk about their salary (工资), age and marriage. They think they are their privacy (隐私) and they are more likely to keep their privacy. But in China, people like talking about them. In America, when people meet strangers, they prefer people to call their shortnames, because it would show how close they are. But in China, it is impolite to do that. In America, you will be hated if you say someone is old and do something special for them, because they think old people are useless in the world. For Chinese, old people are glad to hear that and you will be praised for doing things freely for old people. They like the sense of being respected.
There are different manners in different countries. And we should follow them when we travel to other countries.
26.According to the first paragraph, British people _____.
A.often talk with each other at table B.always beat tableware at table
C.have high obesity rate D.are strict on how to use knives and forks
27.What does the underlined word “resolutely” mean in Chinese
A.犹豫地 B.果断地 C.粗心地 D.懒散地
28.Americans don’t like to talk about _____ when they gather together.
A.food B.marriage C.weather D.short names
29.You will be _____ if you say someone is old in America.
A.hated B.respected C.praised D.laughed
30.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.British people like fast and convenient food.

It’s important to use the correct language, but sometimes this alone is not enough — we need to learn how to be polite when we make 56 (request).
In English, “Where are the restrooms ” and “Could you please tell me where the restrooms are ” are similar requests, but the first could sound 57 (polite).
In English, just like in Chinese, we change the way we speak when 58 (talk) with different people. If you say to your teacher “Where is my book ”, this will sound rude. B 59 if you say, “Excuse me, Mr. West. Do you know where my book is ”, your question will sound much m 60 polite. On the o 61 hand, it might be all right to say “Where is my book ” in some 62 (situation), perhaps with people you know well.
And you would not usually say, “Peter, lend me your pen.” To order 63 (direct) like this can sound rude in English. Usually in English polite questions are 64 (long) and include the extra language, such as “Could you please … ” or “Can I ask … ” It sounds more polite to say, “Peter, could you please l 65 me your pen ” Sometimes we might even need to spend some time leading into a question or a request.
