I spent three years teaching English at a middle school in Chongqing, China. While teaching in Chongqing, I had chances to travel all across Asia. My adventure (冒险) to the Gobi Desert was one of my favorites. My trip took me from the rainbow mountains of Zhangye Danxia, to Jiayuguan, an ancient fort (要塞) on the Great Wall of China. I ended at Dunhuang, one of the central parts of the Silk Road in the Gobi Desert.
I did the journey all by myself. A trip alone meant that I had to depend on my Mandarin speaking skills. ①When I first arrived in China my Mandarin was not good, but I tried to speak to local families and children on the trains. They were all very friendly. I had families practicing English with me as well. We all got our translation apps open when there was an unfamiliar word.
Mount Everest was my last major trip before leaving China. I traveled through the grand Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, to the blue Yamrok Lake, before making my way to the famous mountain with a tour group. It was amazing to put myself into Tibetan culture and experience the world through their eyes. ②I used my language skills to help our group order food in the markets and translate to English when our guide couldn’t find a proper word to express something.
Physically, the terrain (地形) was unique, and the high height and short of oxygen made me feel sick. As a result, I couldn’t sleep well at night. I remembered clearly waking up in the night to get my oxygen tank (氧气瓶) many times. However, I made it. It was a week before I saw Captain Nemo again. Every morning, I noticed fresh air coming into the rooms and I knew that the Nautilus had surfaced (浮出水面). I would go out and see the sunrise.
Then I received a note from Captain Nemo. He invited me and my friends to go hunting with him in the forests of Crespo Island. Ned was excited because he thought there he could find a chance to escape. When I saw Captain Nemo the next day, I asked him why he was so interested in Crespo Island. “I thought you preferred the sea to being on land.”
“I do,” replied the Captain. “But these forests are under the sea.” During breakfast, he explained that he had made diving suits (潜水服), he decided not to come at all.
Conseil and I put on our diving suits, and so did Captain Nemo and one of his men. We stepped into a room and closed the door. The room was filled with water, and another door opened. We must go through it.
We were about ten metres under the water. The light from the sun reached us. Everything looked very colourful. We walked over the fine sand and enjoyed the colours of the shells, fish and seaweed. Conseil and I followed Captain Nemo and his man as they crossed a large grassy area. We were going deeper and deeper. Two hours later, we were a hundred metres under the water. The suits worked very well.
At one hundred metres deep, we could still see quite well, and Captain Nemo stopped and pointed to some dark shapes. This was the forest. The “trees” in the forest were giant seaweed (垂直的). We could not stop looking at them. Fish swam around the branches like birds in a forest. Small shrubs (灌木) grew under the large seaweed trees. Some of them had flowers.

Now, the policy allows travelers from 54 countries 60 ( explore) China for up to six days without a visa if they have a valid (有效的) ticket to leave within 72 or even 144 hours.
