Jamie Wardley is a special kind of artist — an ice sculptor. He first trained as a sand sculptor. Later,he learned about ice sculpture. Now he does sand sculpture in summer. And in winter, he sculpts ice.
When sculpting ice, Wardley has to work in cold temperatures. If the weather is cold enough, he can work outside. But winter in the United Kingdom is not always very cold. So often he works in a large freezer where the temperature is about -12℃.
Wardley enjoys sculpting ice outside in winter. When he sculpts in the open air, people can watch. They can be part of the creative process.
Wardley makes ice sculpting sound simple. But the tools Wardley uses are sharp and dangerous. And the ice is very heavy. Each block of ice weighs 120 kilos. And some larger sculptures are made of several combined blocks of ice. Sometimes ice sculptures can be as big as buildings. In Kemi, Finland there is an ice hotel called the Snow Castle. Each year, Wardley helps build the Snow Castle.
Inside the Snow Castle, the temperature is -50℃. Even the dining tables are made of ice. So you have to wear winter clothes when eating and wear a hat when sleeping. “The ice hotel is built every year in January. Then it melts in April. Each year we rebuild it and create a new design,” Wardley said.
The Snow Castle is a large and amazing work of ice, but Wardley’s smaller ice sculptures are special too. One winter, in the city of Bradford, the UK, Wardley created several small sculptures. He used the sculptures to tell a story which contained an important message about goodwill and understanding.
Ice sculptures are temporary works of art. When the temperature rises, they will melt. But that does not mean that their beauty is lost. The sculptures from that day in Bradford have now melted away, but their message of goodwill, understanding and acceptance remains.

Normally museums exhibit only a small part of their collections, but the Boijmans Van Beuningen gallery in Rotterdam is the first in the world to display the whole lot.
Housed in a huge mirrored, bowl-shaped depot attached to the museum in the Dutch port city, its collection of 151,000 artworks by artists including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet will be accessible to visitors from Saturday.
“It is the only fully accessible depot, public depot that is open in the world,” museum director Sjarel Ex told AFP as media toured the building on Tuesday ahead of the opening.“What happens here is that you do not follow the script that was written by a curator. You see things by accident, and you feel that you are discovering things.”
“Normally, only some 6 to 10 per cent of collections at major museums around the world like the Boijmans Van Beuningen are on display, and the rest kept in closed storage depots,” said Ex.That will now change for the Rotterdam institution.Visitors will even be able to watch works being restored.“If you do not show the works, people will stop talking about and thinking about an artwork. As a result, it is very likely that it is into oblivion — out of sight,” he said.
The project, whose cost was around 92 million euros has mainly been covered by private donations, features five different temperature zones for different types of artworks. The depot was originally created to solve a very serious problem — the possibility of flooding in a low-lying country where a third of the land sits below sea level. The old basement below the museum was likely to let in water, making it unsuitable for storage.“Every building is a moment in time, so this celebrates for sure the climate,” said its architect, Winy Maas.“Why? Because it’s the reason for the existence of this building — the former archives were under water. It was flooding, so we have to bring it up.”

Think “art”.What comes to your mind? Is it Greek or Roman sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings? Have you ever imagined it’s a dancing pattern of lights?
The artworks created by American artist Janet Echelman look like colourful floating clouds when lit up at night.Visitors could not only enjoy looking at them but also interact with them literally — by using their phones to change the colours and patterns. But are they really art?
Whatever your opinion,we cannot deny art has existed for thousands of years and art and technology have always been two separate things.
Today, however, technological advances have led to a combination of art and technology, changing the art world greatly. Now art is more accessible to us.For example, people used to queue up for six hours but spend limited time admiring the famous 5-meter Chinese painting Qingming Scroll. Thanks to technology, however, viewers can leisurely experience a digital version of this painting, where the characters can move and interact with their surroundings.
The combination of art and technology is also changing our concepts of “art” and the “artist”.Not only can we interact with art, but we can also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our fingertips, more people are exploring new art forms, such as digital paintings and videos.
However, it has also raised questions over its overall quality. Can a video of someone slicing a tomato really be called “art”?
Similarly, such developments are making the line between art and technology less distinct. Can someone unfamiliar with traditional artists’ tools really call themselves an “artist”? And is the artist the creator of the art itself,or the maker of the technology behind it?
Where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure — with so many artists exploring new possibilities,we can definitely expect the unexpected.
12.How could viewers interact with Janet Echelman’s artworks?
A.By talking to her on the phone.
B.By lighting up the artworks.
C.By touching their phone screens.
D.By colouring the patterns.
13.What does the example in Paragraph 4 indicate?
A.Achievements of China’s technology.
B.The influence of art on technology.
C.Interaction between viewers and art.
D.Easier access to art caused by technology.
14.What do we know about the combination of art and technology?
A.It lowers the quality of artworks.
B.It involves common people in innovation.
C.It shortens the time of painting.
D.It makes scientists the real creators of art.
15.What is the author’s attitude towards combining technology with art?
A.Regretful. B.Objective.
C.Disapproving. D.Conservative.

Art is all around us.It can be found everywhere, including fancy galleries, people’s living rooms, and on the sides of buildings. So, why is art important?
It promotes expression and creativity. As humans, we’re naturally drawn to art as a form of expression and communication. 16 It’s a way for them to express themselves before they’re able to speak. In fact, participation in the arts may even assist kids with language, motor skills, and visual learning development.
17 When someone applies for a job, there are certain skills they need to have like data analysis or bookkeeping. However, many employers also understand the very important need for the skills which are hard to measure and often difficult to define. Some examples include a person’s ability to adapt to change, think creatively, or collaborate with team members.
It provides historical context. 18 This is why people dedicate their lives to studying cave art, Shakespearean plays, and so much more. When we take the time to dive into art created in the past, we can learn about other generations and eras.We can study art to find out what those before us were facing and how they overcame it. 19
In therapy (疗法) settings, art also provides an opportunity for digging deeper and expressing emotions that are difficult to discuss. 20 In one important study, children between 6 and 12 were asked to draw a house as a distraction after thinking about something upsetting. This group was able to improve their mood when compared with children who were instructed to draw the negative event or simply copy another drawing.
A.These are its major benefits.
B.Children love to draw, sing, and dance.
C.It helps all of us develop necessary soft skills.
D.How does it have an impact on our lives?
E.Similarly, future generations will learn about our current events by the art we leave behind.
F.Art and human history go hand-in-hand.
G.It can help people lift their spirits.

Ⅲ.读后续写
  阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It wasn’t the candy he wanted. It was the skateboard. Tommy had been staring at it for weeks, every day on his way home from school, admiring it through the window of the skate shop on Market Street. It was a longboard — a serious skateboard, not meant for tricks or speed, but for long rides down hills, on busy roads, or all the way across town. This was a skateboard that could change Tommy’s life. No longer would his parents have to pick him up after school, or at the movies. The longboard would be able to take him home.
One day, he told his dad he wanted to buy the skateboard.
“Dad,” Tommy said. “It’s the world’s finest skateboard. It could change my life forever.”
“That’s great,” said Dad. “I’m all for kids having hobbies. But that’s an expensive little toy, and ...”
“It’s not a toy!” Tommy felt himself about to lose his temper. But he collected himself. “It’s a whole new way of life. When you were my age, what was the thing you wanted more than anything else? The thing you dreamed about?”
“A Vincent Black Shadow — the world’s finest motorcycle. A more beautiful piece of machinery has never been designed.”
“So yeah, this board is like the Vincent Black Shadow for the 21st Century. So you see why I have to have it.”
“You know what my dad told me when I asked for a Black Shadow?”
  “What?”
“Nothing. I didn’t ask him, because I knew he’d think it was nothing more than an expensive toy. I went out, got a job, and started saving.”
“Man,” Tommy said, a bit disappointed. “I was afraid you’d say something like that.”
“You can do it, can’t you?”
Tommy never worked before, but now he decided to get a job to save money for the skateboard. He walked up and down Market Street looking for someplace to work. The pizzeria wasn’t hiring. The coffee shop said he was too young. The only store with a “HELP WANTED” sign was Orson’s Confectionaries. Mr Orson’s candy store.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
Tommy had heard kids talk about buying something in the candy store.

Jamie Wardley is a special kind of artist — an ice sculptor. He first
trained as a sand sculptor. Later,he learned about ice sculpture. Now he
does sand sculpture in summer. And in winter, he sculpts ice.
When sculpting ice, Wardley has to work in cold temperatures. If
the weather is cold enough, he can work outside. But winter in the United
Kingdom is not always very cold. So often he works in a large freezer
where the temperature is about -12℃.
Wardley enjoys sculpting ice outside in winter. When he sculpts in the
open air, people can watch. They can be part of the creative process.
Wardley makes ice sculpting sound simple. But the tools Wardley uses
are sharp and dangerous. And the ice is very heavy. Each block of ice
weighs 120 kilos. And some larger sculptures are made of several
combined blocks of ice. Sometimes ice sculptures can be as big as
buildings. In Kemi, Finland there is an ice hotel called the Snow Castle.
Each year, Wardley helps build the Snow Castle.
Inside the Snow Castle, the temperature is -50℃. Even the dining
tables are made of ice. So you have to wear winter clothes when eating and
wear a hat when sleeping. “The ice hotel is built every year in January.
Then it melts in April. Each year we rebuild it and create a new design,”
Wardley said.
The Snow Castle is a large and amazing work of ice, but Wardley’s
smaller ice sculptures are special too. One winter, in the city of
Bradford, the UK, Wardley created several small sculptures. He used
the sculptures to tell a story which contained an important message about
goodwill and understanding.
Ice sculptures are temporary works of art. When the temperature
rises, they will melt. But that does not mean that their beauty is lost. The
sculptures from that day in Bradford have now melted away, but their
message of goodwill, understanding and acceptance remains.

Normally museums exhibit only a small part of their collections, but
the Boijmans Van Beuningen gallery in Rotterdam is the first in the world
to display the whole lot.
Housed in a huge mirrored, bowl-shaped depot attached to the
museum in the Dutch port city, its collection of 151,000 artworks by
artists including Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet will be accessible to
visitors from Saturday.
“It is the only fully accessible depot, public depot that is open in
the world,” museum director Sjarel Ex told AFP as media toured the
building on Tuesday ahead of the opening.“What happens here is that you
do not follow the script that was written by a curator. You see things by
accident, and you feel that you are discovering things.”
“Normally, only some 6 to 10 per cent of collections at major
museums around the world like the Boijmans Van Beuningen are on
display, and the rest kept in closed storage depots,” said Ex.That will
now change for the Rotterdam institution.Visitors will even be able to
watch works being restored.“If you do not show the works, people will
stop talking about and thinking about an artwork. As a result, it is very
likely that it is into oblivion — out of sight,” he said.
The project, whose cost was around 92 million euros has mainly
been covered by private donations, features five different temperature
zones for different types of artworks. The depot was originally created to
solve a very serious problem — the possibility of flooding in a low-lying
country where a third of the land sits below sea level. The old basement
below the museum was likely to let in water, making it unsuitable for
storage.“Every building is a moment in time, so this celebrates for sure
the climate,” said its architect, Winy Maas.“Why? Because it’s the
reason for the existence of this building — the former archives were under
water. It was flooding, so we have to bring it up.”

Think “art”.What comes to your mind? Is it Greek or Roman
sculptures in the Louvre, or Chinese paintings? Have you ever imagined
it’s a dancing pattern of lights?
The artworks created by American artist Janet Echelman look like
colourful floating clouds when lit up at night.Visitors could not only enjoy
looking at them but also interact with them literally — by using their
phones to change the colours and patterns. But are they really art?
Whatever your opinion,we cannot deny art has existed for thousands
of years and art and technology have always been two separate things.
Today, however, technological advances have led to a
combination of art and technology, changing the art world greatly. Now
art is more accessible to us.For example, people used to queue up for six
hours but spend limited time admiring the famous 5-meter Chinese
painting Qingming Scroll. Thanks to technology, however, viewers can
leisurely experience a digital version of this painting, where the
characters can move and interact with their surroundings.
The combination of art and technology is also changing our concepts
of “art” and the “artist”.Not only can we interact with art, but we
can also take part in its creation. With new technological tools at our
fingertips, more people are exploring new art forms, such as digital
paintings and videos.
However, it has also raised questions over its overall quality. Can a
video of someone slicing a tomato really be called “art”?
Similarly, such developments are making the line between art and
technology less distinct. Can someone unfamiliar with traditional artists’
tools really call themselves an “artist”? And is the artist the creator of
the art itself,or the maker of the technology behind it?
Where technology will take art next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is
for sure — with so many artists exploring new possibilities,we can
definitely expect the unexpected.

Art is all around us.It can be found everywhere, including fancy
galleries, people’s living rooms, and on the sides of buildings. So,
why is art important?
It promotes expression and creativity. As humans, we’re naturally
drawn to art as a form of expression and communication. 16 It’s a way
for them to express themselves before they’re able to speak. In fact,
participation in the arts may even assist kids with language, motor
skills, and visual learning development.

employers also understand the very important need for the skills which are
hard to measure and often difficult to define. Some examples include a
person’s ability to adapt to change, think creatively, or collaborate with
team members.
It provides historical context. 18 This is why people dedicate their
lives to studying cave art, Shakespearean plays, and so much
more. When we take the time to dive into art created in the past, we can
learn about other generations and eras.We can study art to find out what
those before us were facing and how they overcame it. 19
In therapy (疗法) settings, art also provides an opportunity for
digging deeper and expressing emotions that are difficult to discuss. 20
In one important study, children between 6 and 12 were asked to draw a
house as a distraction after thinking about something upsetting. This group
was able to improve their mood when compared with children who were
instructed to draw the negative event or simply copy another drawing.
A. These are its major benefits.
B. Children love to draw, sing, and dance.
C. It helps all of us develop necessary soft skills.
D. How does it have an impact on our lives?

It wasn’t the candy he wanted. It was the skateboard. Tommy had
been staring at it for weeks, every day on his way home from school,
admiring it through the window of the skate shop on Market Street. It was
a longboard — a serious skateboard, not meant for tricks or speed, but
for long rides down hills, on busy roads, or all the way across town.
This was a skateboard that could change Tommy’s life. No longer would
his parents have to pick him up after school, or at the movies. The
longboard would be able to take him home.
One day, he told his dad he wanted to buy the skateboard.
“Dad,” Tommy said. “It’s the world’s finest skateboard. It could
change my life forever.”
“That’s great,” said Dad. “I’m all for kids having hobbies. But
that’s an expensive little toy, and ...”
“It’s not a toy!” Tommy felt himself about to lose his temper. But
he collected himself. “It’s a whole new way of life. When you were my
age, what was the thing you wanted more than anything else? The thing
you dreamed about?”
“A Vincent Black Shadow — the world’s finest motorcycle. A more
beautiful piece of machinery has never been designed.”
“So yeah, this board is like the Vincent Black Shadow for the 21st
Century. So you see why I have to have it.”
“You know what my dad told me when I asked for a Black
Shadow?”
  “What?”
“Nothing. I didn’t ask him, because I knew he’d think it was
nothing more than an expensive toy. I went out, got a job, and started
saving.”
“Man,” Tommy said, a bit disappointed. “I was afraid you’d
say something like that.”
“You can do it, can’t you?”
Tommy never worked before, but now he decided to get a job to
save money for the skateboard. He walked up and down Market Street
looking for someplace to work. The pizzeria wasn’t hiring. The coffee shop
said he was too young. The only store with a “HELP WANTED” sign
was Orson’s Confectionaries. Mr Orson’s candy store.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
Tommy had heard kids talk about buying something in the candy
store.

“A lot of kids do odd jobs to get what they want,” smiled Mr
Orson.

store. It was said that the boss was very kind. Tommy was still nervous,
but he wanted to give it a try for the skateboard. He pushed open the
door, and went in. “How may I help you?” Mr Orson smiled.Tommy
told the boss he’d come for the interview. Mr Orson asked him jokingly if
he wanted to save up for something.“Oh, yes,” Tommy felt shy,
and nodded,“you’ve read my mind. I want a skateboard.”
“A lot of kids do odd jobs to get what they want,” smiled Mr
Orson.Tommy felt relieved. Mr Orson told him when he should come,
what he should do, how he would be paid, and some other issues. He
finally asked Tommy if he was interested in it. Tommy thought it was
easy, so he accepted it. It was a good start. Thanks to his dad’s
encouragement, he’d made a step toward depending on himself in order
to achieve his goal. He felt so proud.
