A
Chinese painters painted on various materials in many formats. The most popular materials with the earliest artists were wood and bamboo but then the following were adopted: plastered walls, silk, and paper. Canvas would only be used widely from the 8th century CE. Brushes were made from animal hair, cut to a tapering end and tied to a bamboo or wood handle. Significantly, they were precisely the same instruments used by the calligrapher. The inks used were made from rubbing a dried cake of animal or vegetable matter mixed with minerals and glue against a wet stone. Each artist had to laboriously (辛苦地) make their own inks as there was no commercial production of them.
The two most popular themes of Chinese painting were portraits and landscapes. Portraits in Chinese art began in the Warring States Period and were traditionally rendered with great restraint, usually because the subject was a great scholar, monk or court official and so should, by definition, have a good moral character which should be portrayed with respect by the artist. For this reason, faces are often seemingly impassive (面无表情的) with only the merest hint of emotion or character subtly expressed. Often the character of the subject is much more clearly expressed in their attitude and relationship to other people in the picture; this is especially true of portraits of emperors and Buddhist figures.
Landscape painting had been around as long as artists had, but the genre really took off during the Tang Dynasty when artists became much more concerned with humanity’s place in nature. Typically, small human figures guide the viewer through a panoramic (全景的) landscape of mountains and rivers in Tang paintings. It should be no surprise that mountains and water dominated landscape painting as the very word in Chinese for landscape translates literally as “mountain-and-water”. Trees and rocks are also featured and the whole scene is usually meant to capture a particular season of the year. Colours were limited in use, either everything in various shades of a single colour (illustrating the roots in calligraphy) or two colours combined, usually blues and greens.

The term modern art sounds like it means art that is popular at the moment, but in fact, modern art is a style that originated over 150 years ago, and includes artists that by now have attained classic status, such as Picasso, Matisse, and Gauguin. And what’s even more ironic (讽刺的) is that the movement they pioneered, considered revolutionary at the time, was inspired largely by an object of a traditional and ancient design.
As far back as the Renaissance, the primary European art movements emphasized conventional representation and adherence (遵循) to classical forms. But that began to change in the late 19th century as artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne expanded the boundaries of painting. Soon, a movement arose that sought to create an entirely new style of art, and one way of doing so was to look beyond Western civilization.
Henri Matisse showed his friend Picasso a mask he had acquired made by the Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast. The mask awoke Picasso’s curiosity, leading him to visit the Trocadéro Ethnographic Museum in Paris in 1907. The visit was eye-opening for Picasso, who declared that African masks were what painting was all about. At this time, Picasso had been working on a painting of five naked women in a style that would later come to be known as Cubism. And while three of these ladies show facial features found in ancient Iberian art, a nod to Picasso’s Spanish heritage, the faces of the two on the right closely resemble African masks. Created in 1907 after hundreds of sketches and studies, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon has been considered the first truly 20th century masterpiece, breaking with many previously held notions in art.
Inspiration from ancient cultures started one of the most revolutionary movements in art history, but were these artists playing the role of explorers or conquerors, stealing ideas and profiting from cultures they considered primitive? Questions like this deserve scrutiny (审视), as artists continue to redefine standards. Perhaps not too long from now, the bold innovations (革新) of modern art will be overturned by a new set of pioneers drawing inspiration from another unlikely source.
5.When did the style of European art experience some changes?
A.When artists turned to nature for inspiration.
B.When artists looked beyond Western civilization.
C.When artists began to emphasize self-expression.
D.When artists expanded the boundaries of painting.
6.What can we learn about Les Demoiselles d’Avignon?
A.It combined different cultural elements.
B.Its distinctive style invited much criticism.
C.It broke away from all conventional styles.
D.It was inspired by a visit to the Ivory Coast.
7.What does the author try to convey in the last paragraph?
A.Artistic creation involves imitation and innovation.
B.The pioneering role of modern artists is questionable.
C.Drawing inspiration from different cultures is essential.
D.It’s vital that the standards of art should be changed constantly.
8.What is the best title for the text?

Artistic activities like taking a painting class or visiting a gallery are becoming increasingly popular today. 9 However, scientific studies have shown that art plays a critical role in promoting health and well-being.
Art is found to be effective in relieving stress. This applies to both children and adults. Activities such as painting, drawing, and sculpting have been linked to lower stress and mental calmness. They take participants’ mind off busy daily work. 10
Another great benefit of art is that it encourages both kids and adults in imagination and creative thinking. It helps develop and improve problem-solving skills. 11 That allows people to imagine different solutions to problems. This type of creative thinking allows the brain to perform complicated functions in ways that learning a new language does.
12 It drives the brain to produce a hormone (激素) that makes people feel good about themselves, improves concentration, and increases motivation, providing a sense of accomplishment. After completing a creative project, people will feel happy and satisfied. This process of creating something unique can promote a sense of well-being and even slow down aging.
Sharing the creative process of making art is a great way to help students build their social awareness and interpersonal skills. This can remind schools to have students work with seniors in the community! 13 Creating visual arts helps in transforming lives of people with brain disorders like Alzheimer’s disease by increasing connections, promoting cell growth and improving memory.
A.Include artistic activities in the daily life.
B.Creating art helps increase self-confidence.
C.Art is a very interesting topic for people of all ages.
D.There is no right or wrong in the creation of artworks.
E.Consequently, mental states such as fear and worry get set aside.
F.Arrange a trip to the museum or have an art class across generations.
G.People tend to think the benefits of art are only enjoyment and relaxation.

Qingming Scroll①
Zhang Zeduan’s Qingming Scroll is a masterwork of Chinese art.[1]Painted on a five-metre-long silk scroll, it offers an important insight② into life in China in the 12th century.[2]It is commonly believed that the city described in the painting is Bianjing (present-day Kaifeng), the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty③.The ancient scroll has survived the test of time remarkably well, and is currently housed in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Painted on a five-metre-long silk scroll在句中作状语。
[2]It is commonly believed that ...意为“普遍公认的是……”, It 是形式主语,真正的主语是that引导的主语从句;the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty是 Bianjing的同位语。described in the painting为动词-ed短语作后置定语。
The scroll consists of④ three main sections. The first section presents a peaceful scene of rural life near Bianjing, [3]featuring crop⑤ fields, a river winding through⑥ the landscape, and farmers hard at work. The second section shows the riverbanks and the central bridge alive with activity as boats sail⑦ in and out of Bianjing.[4]Civilians⑧ can also be seen walking through the city gate in both directions. The third and final section pictures⑨ life inside the city itself. Here, hundreds of people from all walks of life⑩, including butchers , hairdressers and government officials, can be seen going about their daily business. The combination of these three sections gives the viewer an idea of [5]what life was like for the people of Bianjing.
在句中作伴随状语,其后的crop fields,a river winding through the landscape和farmers hard at work是三个并列宾语。
[4]句中can also be seen walking ...是see sb doing sth的被动结构,表示“某人被看到正在做某事”;句中walking through the city gate in both directions是主语Civilians的补足语。
Zhang’s amazing artistic technique is apparent all across the scroll.[6]Using ink on silk, he creates realistic images of scenery, buildings and people, and displays a remarkable mastery of perspective .The most impressive aspect of the painting, however, is probably Zhang’s precise brushwork. This well-developed ability, as well as the scroll’s ambitious size, allows Zhang to show an enormous amount of detail — you could study the painting for hours and still discover something new.
[6]句中动词-ing短语Using ink on silk作方式状语;creates和displays作并列谓语;of scenery, buildings and people作后置定语,修饰images。
Thanks to all this fine detail, the Qingming Scroll provides a comprehensive look at life during the Northern Song Dynasty. It reveals a great deal about the 12th-century Chinese customs, clothing , transportation methods, business practices, and a wide range of buildings, such as temples , teahouses and government structures .At first sight, the overall scene of life in the capital city appears peaceful and cheerful. However, some critics suggest that on closer inspection , the painting actually exposes serious political and social problems.[7]Some boats carrying food do not seem to belong to the government, which suggests that the government has lost control of food supplies and transportation.[8]Also in the painting are soldiers who appear to ignore their duties. There are some less obvious indicators of trouble too.For example, in the centre of the scroll, a boat is in danger of crashing into the bridge. These sorts of details point to a crisis developing in the city.In fact, the Northern Song Dynasty was in decline by this stage.About twenty years after the painting was completed, it was overthrown .
Soldiers who appear to ignore their duties are also in the painting.。
Zhang’s timeless scroll is an important example of realism in the history of Chinese paintings. Its value is down not only to its great scale , artistic quality and attention to detail, but also to its representation of daily life.[9]Such is its worth that several later emperors even asked the most talented artists of their day to make copies of the scroll. Some of these copies are now regarded as precious works of art in their own right .With the Qingming Scroll, Zhang made an outstanding contribution to Chinese art and greatly influenced generations of future artists.
其中含有“such ...that ...”
The original scroll is still in one piece despite its age, but it is extremely delicate.Because of this, it is not often displayed to the public.[10]The last time it was on exhibition , crowds waited in line for hours for the rare chance to see the famous painting with their own eyes. The public’s continued enthusiasm about the Qingming Scroll, even after all these centuries, speaks volumes about the power of this historic piece of art.

transportation methods, business practices, and a wide range of
buildings, such as temples , teahouses and government structures

peaceful and cheerful. However, some critics suggest that on closer
inspection , the painting actually exposes serious political and social

government, which suggests that the government has lost control of food
supplies and transportation.[8]Also in the painting are soldiers who
appear to ignore their duties. There are some less obvious indicators of
trouble too.For example, in the centre of the scroll, a boat is in danger
of crashing into the bridge. These sorts of details point to a crisis
developing in the city.In fact, the Northern Song Dynasty was in decline
by this stage.About twenty years after the painting was completed, it
was overthrown .

A
Chinese painters painted on various materials in many formats. The
most popular materials with the earliest artists were wood and bamboo but
then the following were adopted: plastered walls, silk, and paper.
Canvas would only be used widely from the 8th century CE. Brushes were
made from animal hair, cut to a tapering end and tied to a bamboo or
wood handle. Significantly, they were precisely the same instruments
used by the calligrapher.
The inks used were made from rubbing a dried cake of animal or vegetable
matter mixed with minerals and glue against a wet stone. Each artist had to
laboriously (辛苦地) make their own inks as there was no commercial
production of them.
The two most popular themes of Chinese painting were portraits and
landscapes. Portraits in Chinese art began in the Warring States Period and
were traditionally rendered with great restraint, usually because the
subject was a great scholar, monk or court official and so should, by
definition, have a good moral character which should be portrayed with
respect by the artist. For this reason, faces are often seemingly impassive
(面无表情的) with only the merest hint of emotion or character subtly
expressed. Often the character of the subject is much more clearly
expressed in their attitude and relationship to other people in the picture;
this is especially true of portraits of emperors and Buddhist figures.
Landscape painting had been around as long as artists had, but the
genre really took off during the Tang Dynasty when artists became much
more concerned with humanity’s place in nature. Typically, small human
figures guide the viewer through a panoramic (全景的) landscape of
mountains and rivers in Tang paintings. It should be no surprise that
mountains and water dominated landscape painting as the very word in
Chinese for landscape translates literally as “mountain-and-water”.
Trees and rocks are also featured and the whole scene is usually meant to
capture a particular season of the year.
Colours were limited in use, either everything in various shades of a
single colour (illustrating the roots in calligraphy) or two colours
combined, usually blues and greens.

The term modern art sounds like it means art that is popular at the
moment, but in fact, modern art is a style that originated over 150 years
ago, and includes artists that by now have attained classic status, such
as Picasso, Matisse, and Gauguin. And what’s even more ironic (讽刺
的) is that the movement they pioneered, considered revolutionary at
the time, was inspired largely by an object of a traditional and ancient
design.
As far back as the Renaissance, the primary European art
movements emphasized conventional representation and adherence (遵
循) to classical forms. But that began to change in the late 19th century as
artists like Van Gogh and Cézanne expanded the boundaries of painting.
Soon, a movement arose that sought to create an entirely new style of
art, and one way of doing so was to look beyond Western civilization.
Henri Matisse showed his friend Picasso a mask he had acquired
made by the Dan tribe of the Ivory Coast. The mask awoke Picasso’s
curiosity, leading him to visit the Trocadéro Ethnographic Museum in
Paris in 1907. The visit was eye-opening for Picasso, who declared that
African masks were what painting was all about. At this time, Picasso
had been working on a painting of five naked women in a style that would
later come to be known as Cubism.
And while three of these ladies show facial features found in ancient
Iberian art, a nod to Picasso’s Spanish heritage, the faces of the two on
the right closely resemble African masks. Created in 1907 after hundreds of
sketches and studies, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon has been considered the
first truly 20th century masterpiece, breaking with many previously held
notions in art.
Inspiration from ancient cultures started one of the most revolutionary
movements in art history, but were these artists playing the role of
explorers or conquerors, stealing ideas and profiting from cultures they
considered primitive? Questions like this deserve scrutiny (审视), as
artists continue to redefine standards. Perhaps not too long from now, the
bold innovations (革新) of modern art will be overturned by a new set
of pioneers drawing inspiration from another unlikely source.

5. When did the style of European art experience some changes?
A. When artists turned to nature for inspiration.
B. When artists looked beyond Western civilization.
C. When artists began to emphasize self-expression.
D. When artists expanded the boundaries of painting.
6. What can we learn about Les Demoiselles d’Avignon?
A. It combined different cultural elements.
B. Its distinctive style invited much criticism.
C. It broke away from all conventional styles.
D. It was inspired by a visit to the Ivory Coast.

A. Artistic creation involves imitation and innovation.
B. The pioneering role of modern artists is questionable.
C. Drawing inspiration from different cultures is essential.
D. It’s vital that the standards of art should be changed constantly.

Artistic activities like taking a painting class or visiting a gallery are
becoming increasingly popular today. 9 However, scientific studies
have shown that art plays a critical role in promoting health and well-
being.
Art is found to be effective in relieving stress. This applies to both
children and adults. Activities such as painting, drawing, and sculpting
have been linked to lower stress and mental calmness. They take
participants’ mind off busy daily work. 10
Another great benefit of art is that it encourages both kids and adults
in imagination and creative thinking. It helps develop and improve
problem-solving skills. 11 That allows people to imagine different
solutions to problems. This type of creative thinking allows the brain to
perform complicated functions in ways that learning a new language does.
12 It drives the brain to produce a hormone (激素) that makes
people feel good about themselves, improves concentration, and
increases motivation, providing a sense of accomplishment. After
completing a creative project, people will feel happy and satisfied. This
process of creating something unique can promote a sense of well-being
and even slow down aging.
Sharing the creative process of making art is a great way to help
students build their social awareness and interpersonal skills. This can
remind schools to have students work with seniors in the
community! 13 Creating visual arts helps in transforming lives of
people with brain disorders like Alzheimer’s disease by increasing
connections, promoting cell growth and improving memory.
A. Include artistic activities in the daily life.
B. Creating art helps increase self-confidence.
C. Art is a very interesting topic for people of all ages.
D. There is no right or wrong in the creation of artworks.
E. Consequently, mental states such as fear and worry get set aside.
F. Arrange a trip to the museum or have an art class across generations.
G. People tend to think the benefits of art are only enjoyment and
relaxation.

First of all, I’d like to express my sincere thanks to my teacher Mr
Tang who has offered me great help. Secondly, I feel honored to be
invited to share my experience here. I never missed any chance to visit art
galleries, as a result of which, I found much inspiration. For me, the
process of creation was like fitting together the pieces of a puzzle to make
a complete work of art. Every time I got an idea, I would draw it on the
paper. Last but not least, I always remember that others’ advice is worth
listening to.
