A
Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most people. In fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school.
It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case in America. In the 19th century, a usual American activity was to sit around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there was no television at the time, nor movie theatres, nor World Wide Web, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source of pleasure,of self-education,of connection to other people or to the world beyond one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an individual one,and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the fireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life.
How did things change? Why are most Americans no longer comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poem has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems?
There are, I believe, three factors: poets, teachers, and we ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third. The world surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the poem. Early in the 20th century, poetry in English headed into directions unfavourable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not for the fireside or the easy chair at night, and that they belonged where other difficult-to-read things belonged.
Poets failed the reader, and so did teachers. They want their students to know something about the skills of a poem, and they want their students to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs when teachers push these concerns on their high school students is that young people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.

Floorball has been a sport growing in popularity in the United States for the past few years. At Saint Martin’s University in Lacey, Washington, it started as an activity spread by word of mouth, and later became popular across the university.
David Crawford, the director of recreation (娱乐活动) services at Saint Martin’s University, felt the sport could have a large success on their campus.
“I’ve played floor hockey (曲棍球) over the years, but was always annoyed with the equipment. When I came across floorball, I immediately saw the potential benefits it had in relation to overall satisfaction,” said Crawford.
One of the many perks of offering floorball at your university is that it offers players the same style of sport as hockey, without the high risk of concussions (脑震荡) and other head-related injuries. “When playing floorball, players don’t wear helmets, gloves or any of the other equipment that’s needed in hockey. It is recommended that players wear eye protection and a mouth guard, but it is not required,” said Crawford.
While traditional marketing strategies are taken by Saint Martin’s University to publicize the sport, informal sessions have really been what spread the word about the popularity and benefits of the sport. These informal sessions include anything from offering the sport as an option at monthly “late night” events to having the basketball and volleyball teams use floorball as conditioning practice.
Crawford explained how it is important to understand how beneficial the sport can be if offered at other universities. It is inexpensive, it won’t damage your floors and you can play it on nearly any surface.
“If you have a floor hockey program and it’s in decline (衰落), you may find with a switch to floorball there may be more interest from players who aren’t currently playing,” said Crawford. “While floorball will attract the hockey crowd, it will also attract students looking for something new and different.”
9.What aspect of floor hockey was Crawford dissatisfied with?
A.Its rules are too strict.
B.It needs a lot of players.
C.Its styles are too traditional.
D.It requires several pieces of equipment.
10.What does the underlined word “perks” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Purposes. B.Examples.
C.Advantages. D.Challenges.
11.What is a more effective method of publicizing floorball at the university?
A.Using traditional media.
B.Setting up floorball teams.
C.Organizing informal activities.
D.Setting aside a field for floorball.
12.What opinion does Crawford express in the last paragraph?
A.Floorball may be popular with new players.
B.Floorball may replace floor hockey at the campus.
C.There may be a need for saving floor hockey programs.
D.There may be more floorball matches between universities.

As I was doing my housework yesterday, I chose a playlist by Jeanette, a Spanish pop singer. As I listened to her, I suddenly became aware that Jeanette was singing in English and French, so I got excited. The song that was playing only contained one French lyric. Even so, this was enough to make me appreciate my knowledge of languages more and made me realize that people like Jeanette and I can share our love for languages through music.
Because my family comes from Mexico, I am lucky to be bilingual (会说两种语言的), speaking both in Spanish and English. Furthermore, I’ve been learning French since I was twelve years old and plan to be a French and Spanish teacher in the future. I’m so thankful that my parents insisted on speaking only in Spanish to me growing up.
I couldn’t help thinking about how there is a certain quality in Spanish and French in particular that can attract the English-dominant (英语主导的) music industry. The Spanish-language pop song Mi Gente (My People) by Colombian-born J.Balvin, featuring French artist Willy William, represents a special moment in music, a new sound of a Latino culture on the rise and being embraced (欣然接受) proudly. Even though Willy William only sings one French lyric in the song, French learners like me are content that they can understand that one line. Furthermore, native French and Spanish speakers should feel proud that their language is included in such a popular industry. I am proud to hear Spanish songs on English-speaking radio stations.
We don’t listen to songs simply because we like the rhythm; we actually appreciate the words. I encourage my fellow students to continue to learn a second or even third language and immerse (沉浸) themselves in the culture. Once you get to the level where you understand what an artist is saying in a foreign language, the feeling of pride is irreplaceable. Plus, what better way to share your love for French, Spanish, Italian, etc. than through the universal language of music?
13.Why was the author excited when listening to Jeanette?
A.She found Jeanette’s song was her favourite.
B.She felt inspired to explore a new language.
C.She realized she had a great interest in music.
D.She fully understood what Jeanette was singing.
14.What is the author’s dream?
A.To come back to Mexico.
B.To teach French and Spanish.
C.To become a bilingual singer.
D.To learn more foreign languages.
15.Why does the author mention J.Balvin’s “Mi Gente” in Paragraph 3?
A.To highly appreciate J.Balvin’s talent in music.
B.To explain why English songs win wide support.
C.To compare J.Balvin’s music style with that of Willy William.
D.To show Spanish and French can be popular in the music industry.
16.What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A.It is significant to learn and master new languages.
B.It is a good way to learn a new language through music.
C.It is a must to understand lyrics before listening to foreign songs.
D.It is helpful for teachers to test students’ language skills through music.

Saving the environment might seem like a difficult thing. But living an environmentally friendly life is quite easy. With just a few small lifestyle changes, you can protect the planet and also live a healthier life for yourself! 17
Cut back on driving.
Find other forms of transportation that consume less or no petrol. 18 They won’t cause any pollution or consume natural resources. If that isn’t a choice, consider sharing with others or using public transportation. Replacing car trips with public transport reduces traffic jams and the overall amount of petrol, cutting back your carbon footprint.
Volunteer to clean up your community.
Volunteer work has a directly positive impact on the environment in your area. You can volunteer to pick up litter, plant community gardens or clean up rivers. Find an activity that suits your interests and set aside time to help regularly. 19 If you prefer to be part of a group, volunteer with friends, your class or anyone else.
Upcycle items.
20 Instead of throwing things away, give them another purpose by making jewelry, household accessories or restyled clothing. Upcycling is fun and good for the Earth. For example, you could turn an old T-shirt into a grocery bag or use cinder blocks (煤渣砖) to make outdoor planters. Experiment and look for new ways to adapt used objects.
21
Some chemicals have harmful long-term effects on the environment. Choose chemical-free products, plus all-natural household cleaners, beauty and hygiene products. The fewer chemicals you use, the healthier the environment will be. Plus, natural and chemical-free products are also good for you!
A.Keep recycled items properly.
B.Use fewer chemicals in your daily life.
C.Walk or ride a bike whenever possible.
D.Here are some tips that may be of great help.
E.Consider investing in an electric or hybrid (混合动力) vehicle.
F.You can join an environmental organization that attracts you, too.
G.Creatively repurpose unwanted items to put less trash into the world.

Ⅰ.
In the 19th century ...of connection to other people or to the world beyond one’s own community.
Poets failed the reader, and so did teachers.
根据第一段中的to be “about seven years old ...from the circumstances of shedding (使脱落) her front teeth”可知,Wheatley一家是根据菲莉斯的牙齿状况看出她正是换牙的年龄。
根据第三段中的Colonists (殖民者) did not want to buy poetry written by an African.Mrs Wheatley wrote to England to ask Countess (女伯爵) of Huntingdon for help ...This book made Phillis famous in England and the thirteen colonies.
After her master died, Phillis was freed.
根据第三段中的I’ve played floor hockey (曲棍球) over the years, but was always annoyed with the equipment.
根据第四段中的it offers players the same style of sport as hockey, without the high risk of concussions (脑震荡) and other head-related injuries可知,本段中提到了地板球运动的一个优势:没有头部受伤的高风险。
根据最后一段中Crawford所说的you may find with a switch to floorball there may be more interest from players who aren’t currently playing和it will also attract students looking for something new and different可知,Crawford认为地板球运动可能会吸引那些之前没从事过该项运动的人。
根据第二段中的plan to be a French and Spanish teacher in the future可知,会说三种语言的作者想当教法语和西班牙语的老师。
Some chemicals have harmful long-term effects ... beauty and hygiene products.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
By Robert Frost
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

The Road Not Taken is a poem written by American poet Robert Frost.
This poem describes a situation where the poet needs to choose from two roads. The “roads” not only refer to the real roads he meets while walking in the yellow woods, but also symbolize different directions in life. The choice has such a big impact on our lives that we hesitate a lot at the crossroads.
In my opinion, all of us are a traveler on our journey through life.Once we make a choice, we have few chances to go back, so what we need to do is embrace the future actively rather than sigh for the past.

1. 诗的作者;
2. 对诗中“roads”的理解;
注意:1.写作词数应为80左右;
The Road Not Taken is a poem written by American poet Robert Frost.
This poem describes a situation where the poet needs to choose from
two roads. The “roads” not only refer to the real roads he meets while
walking in the yellow woods, but also symbolize different directions in
life. The choice has such a big impact on our lives that we hesitate a lot at
the crossroads.
In my opinion, all of us are a traveler on our journey through
life.Once we make a choice, we have few chances to go back, so what
we need to do is embrace the future actively rather than sigh for the past.

A
Reading poems is not exactly an everyday activity for most people. In
fact, many people never read a poem once they get out of high school.
It is worth reminding ourselves that this has not always been the case
in America. In the 19th century, a usual American activity was to sit
around the fireside in the evening and read poems aloud. It is true that there
was no television at the time, nor movie theatres, nor World Wide
Web, to provide diversion. However, poems were a source of
pleasure,of self-education,of connection to other people or to the world
beyond one’s own community. Reading them was a social act as well as an
individual one,and perhaps even more social than individual. Writing
poems to share with friends and relations was, like reading poems by the
fireside, another way in which poetry has a place in everyday life.
How did things change? Why are most Americans no longer
comfortable with poetry, and why do most people today think that a poem
has nothing to tell them and that they can do well without poems?
There are, I believe, three factors: poets, teachers, and we
ourselves. Of these, the least important is the third. The world
surrounding the poem has betrayed us more than we have betrayed the
poem. Early in the 20th century, poetry in English headed into directions
unfavourable to the reading of poetry. Readers decided that poems were not
for the fireside or the easy chair at night, and that they belonged where
other difficult-to-read things belonged.
Poets failed the reader, and so did teachers. They want their students
to know something about the skills of a poem, and they want their
students to see that poems mean something. Yet what usually occurs when
teachers push these concerns on their high school students is that young
people decide poems are unpleasant crossword puzzles.

Phillis Wheatley was born in Gambia (in Africa) on 8 May 1753
and died in Boston on 5 December 1784.When she was seven or eight,
she was sold as a slave to John and Susanna Wheatley of Boston. She was
named after the ship that brought her to America, the Phillis. The family

years old ...from the circumstances of shedding (使脱落) her front
teeth”.

Floorball has been a sport growing in popularity in the United States
for the past few years. At Saint Martin’s University in Lacey,
Washington, it started as an activity spread by word of mouth, and later
became popular across the university.
David Crawford, the director of recreation (娱乐活动) services
at Saint Martin’s University, felt the sport could have a large success on
their campus.
“I’ve played floor hockey (曲棍球) over the years, but was
always annoyed with the equipment. When I came across floorball, I
immediately saw the potential benefits it had in relation to overall
satisfaction,” said Crawford.
One of the many perks of offering floorball at your university is that it
offers players the same style of sport as hockey, without the high risk of
concussions (脑震荡) and other head-related injuries. “When playing
floorball, players don’t wear helmets, gloves or any of the other
equipment that’s needed in hockey. It is recommended that players wear
eye protection and a mouth guard, but it is not required,” said
Crawford.
While traditional marketing strategies are taken by Saint Martin’s
University to publicize the sport, informal sessions have really been what
spread the word about the popularity and benefits of the sport. These
informal sessions include anything from offering the sport as an option at
monthly “late night” events to having the basketball and volleyball
teams use floorball as conditioning practice.
Crawford explained how it is important to understand how beneficial
the sport can be if offered at other universities. It is inexpensive, it won’t
damage your floors and you can play it on nearly any surface.
“If you have a floor hockey program and it’s in decline (衰落),
you may find with a switch to floorball there may be more interest from
players who aren’t currently playing,” said Crawford. “While floorball
will attract the hockey crowd, it will also attract students looking for
something new and different.”

A. Its rules are too strict.
B. It needs a lot of players.
C. Its styles are too traditional.
D. It requires several pieces of equipment.
I’ve played floor hockey

As I was doing my housework yesterday, I chose a playlist by
Jeanette, a Spanish pop singer. As I listened to her, I suddenly became
aware that Jeanette was singing in English and French, so I got excited.
The song that was playing only contained one French lyric. Even so, this
was enough to make me appreciate my knowledge of languages more and
made me realize that people like Jeanette and I can share our love for
languages through music.
Because my family comes from Mexico, I am lucky to be bilingual
(会说两种语言的), speaking both in Spanish and English.
Furthermore, I’ve been learning French since I was twelve years old and
plan to be a French and Spanish teacher in the future. I’m so thankful that
my parents insisted on speaking only in Spanish to me growing up.
I couldn’t help thinking about how there is a certain quality in Spanish
and French in particular that can attract the English-dominant
The Spanish-language pop song Mi Gente (My
People) by Colombian-born J. Balvin, featuring French artist Willy
William, represents a special moment in music, a new sound of a
Latino culture on the rise and being embraced (欣然接受) proudly.
Even though Willy William only sings one French lyric in the song,
French learners like me are content that they can understand that one line.
Furthermore, native French and Spanish speakers should feel proud that
their language is included in such a popular industry. I am proud to hear
Spanish songs on English-speaking radio stations.
We don’t listen to songs simply because we like the rhythm; we
actually appreciate the words. I encourage my fellow students to continue
to learn a second or even third language and immerse (沉浸)
themselves in the culture. Once you get to the level where you understand
what an artist is saying in a foreign language, the feeling of pride is
irreplaceable. Plus, what better way to share your love for French,
Spanish, Italian, etc. than through the universal language of music?

13. Why was the author excited when listening to Jeanette?
A. She found Jeanette’s song was her favourite.
B. She felt inspired to explore a new language.
C. She realized she had a great interest in music.
D. She fully understood what Jeanette was singing.
14. What is the author’s dream?
A. To come back to Mexico.
B. To teach French and Spanish.
C. To become a bilingual singer.
D. To learn more foreign languages.
根据第二段中的plan to be a French and
Spanish teacher in the future
15. Why does the author mention J. Balvin’s “Mi Gente” in
Paragraph 3?
A. To highly appreciate J. Balvin’s talent in music.
B. To explain why English songs win wide support.
C. To compare J. Balvin’s music style with that of Willy William.
D. To show Spanish and French can be popular in the music industry.
16. What does the author stress in the last paragraph?
A. It is significant to learn and master new languages.
B. It is a good way to learn a new language through music.
C. It is a must to understand lyrics before listening to foreign songs.
D. It is helpful for teachers to test students’ language skills through music.
Saving the environment might seem like a difficult thing. But living
an environmentally friendly life is quite easy. With just a few small
lifestyle changes, you can protect the planet and also live a healthier life
for yourself! 17
Find other forms of transportation that consume less or no
petrol. 18 They won’t cause any pollution or consume natural
resources. If that isn’t a choice, consider sharing with others or using
public transportation. Replacing car trips with public transport reduces
traffic jams and the overall amount of petrol, cutting back your carbon
footprint.
Cut back on driving.
Volunteer work has a directly positive impact on the environment in
your area. You can volunteer to pick up litter, plant community gardens
or clean up rivers. Find an activity that suits your interests and set aside
time to help regularly. 19 If you prefer to be part of a group,
volunteer with friends, your class or anyone else.
