(2024·徐州高二上学期期末考试)Polish javelin(标枪) thrower Maria Andrejczyk has sold the silver medal she won at the Tokyo Olympics to fund life-saving surgery for a sick baby.
The Olympian, a bone cancer survivor, auctioned (拍卖) off her medal for $125,000, donating the money to help an eight-month-old Polish boy with a serious disease.
“Miloszek has a serious heart problem and needs an operation,” Andrejczyk wrote on her Facebook page.“It’s for him that I am auctioning my Olympic silver medal.”
The medal was bought by a Polish convenience store chain called Zabka, which quickly announced it was letting Andrejczyk keep the medal. The money will help pay for an operation for Miloszek at Stanford University Medical Center in the US.
In an interview on Polish television, the 25-year-old Olympian said,“The true value of a medal always remains in the heart.A medal is only an object, but it can be of great value to others. This silver can save lives, instead of collecting dust in a closet.”
Andrejczyk knows what it is like to battle health problems. After missing out on a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by just 2 cm, she sat out the next year with a shoulder injury and was then diagnosed with bone cancer in 2018.
But she fought back from both challenges to finish second in the javelin at the Tokyo Games. Her silver medal throw of 64.61 m was just behind China’s Liu Shiying who threw 66.34 m to take the gold.
After it won the auction, Zabka announced on social media that it would let Andrejczyk keep her medal, and make a donation to Miloszek in her name.

(2024·山东六校高二下学期联考)Ask any parent and it’s likely they’ll tell you they’re worried about their kids’ screen time.A 2021 poll found it was Australian parents’ number one health concern for their kids — ahead of cyberbullying and unhealthy diets. But how worried should parents be?
In our new research, we wanted to give parents, policymakers and researchers a comprehensive summary of the best evidence on the influence of screens on children’s physical and psychological health, education and development. We found some things that should reassure parents.
The overall size of the influence of screens across the outcomes (for example, depression, body weight, literacy and sleep) in children were small. We also found it’s not the screen itself that really matters but what’s on it and the way kids use it.
Television is a form of screen time that has worried parents for more than half a century. We did find general television viewing was associated with poorer academic performance and literacy skills. But if the program was educational or if the child was watching with a parent, we found there was a benefit to their literacy.
Our research found more social media use was associated with depression, anxiety and risk taking. The more time a child spent on social media, the more likely they were to have a mental health issue.
So, a key message from our study is to focus less on an unachievable time limit, and instead focus on what kids are actually doing on screens.Try to steer them towards educational apps and meaningful TV programs.
Regardless of what screen-based activities you choose to allow, remember most screen time is sedentary.Long periods of sitting aren’t great for kids (or adults), so breaking up these periods with movement is still important.
Eventually, the most important factor for child development is quality parenting.Being present, spending quality time and creating a caring environment are what really make a difference for children. You matter more to your child’s mental and physical health than the screen.
5.What were Australian parents worried about most about their children?
A.Exam results. B.Cyberbullying.
C.Digital devices. D.Unhealthy diets.
6.What did the researchers stress about the screen?
A.Its size.
B.Its quality.
C.The contents on it.
D.Hours children spend on it.
7.What does the underlined word “steer” in Paragraph 6 probably mean?
A.Guide someone’s behaviour.
B.Develop someone’s interests.
C.Forbid someone’s activities.
D.Follow someone’s footsteps.
8.What should be the top priority for parents according to the author?
A.Choosing educational apps.
B.Keeping their children company.
C.Combining sitting with movement.
D.Limiting their children’s screen time.

I used to work in a preschool for one and a half years, teaching the class for 2-year-olds. There was a headteacher and two assistant teachers (including me) in our class.
Maybe 8 months into my work, we had a new student named Jack, who was nearly 3 years old but hardly knew any words. In fact when he arrived, the only words he would say were “hi” and “no”. Based on our working experience, we suspected his parents just never interacted with him at home.
Every morning, Jack’s mom would drop him off with a totally blank expression. The moment they arrived, Jack would start crying, holding onto the hand or leg of his mother, who would just struggle to get the boy off her, saying “Let me go, Jack.” and then walk away without looking back. When she picked him up in the afternoon, Jack would run up to show her something, but she would simply stare blankly at him and say “Let’s go, Jack.” If the teachers reported anything to her, she’d say “I see.” “Mhmm.”, giving us the same absent look.
Jack’s dad rarely came and he was just as bad. He obviously had an anger problem. Anytime he heard something negative had happened, he would turn red, stare angrily at his son and just say “HUH. Well. We will deal with it.” in such a cold voice.
As a result, the boy, who longed desperately for attention and love, was always bad-tempered (坏脾气).He would run, kick, hit, and even sometimes bite other kids. And when he did it he would laugh and turn to us to look for a reaction. We criticized and punished him again and again, but it didn’t work at all. After his second week, the lead teacher decided to talk to his mom about it. His mom just shrugged (耸肩) it off, gave that blank look and said, “Oh yeah, Jack is a handful (难管的人). I just can’t help it.” The teachers were all shocked.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Having handled Jack for two months, we adjusted our approach.

To our great joy, Jack gradually changed.

A Historical Figure in China
Of all the brilliant historical figures in China, I admire Sima Qian most, who is best-known for his brilliant work Shi Ji, or Historical Records.
With a great passion for history when he was young, Sima Qian visited almost every corner of China to collect first-hand information about historical events and figures. In 109 BCE, Sima Qian began to write his historical work, Historical Records. Even though he was sent to prison later for political reasons, he never gave up and finished the grand project in the end.
Undoubtedly, Sima Qian’s Historical Records is considered to be the greatest historical work in China. His passion for his career and his persistence in his mission will always motivate us to keep working hard for our dreams.
Ⅳ.
Having handled Jack for two months, we adjusted our approach. Instead of punishing him every time he misbehaved, we tried to give him more positive attention. When he did well we praised him, and when he was sad we hugged him and played games with him. Slowly but surely, Jack started to open up. He would smile more often and even started communicating with other children.
To our great joy, Jack gradually changed. He stopped hitting and biting other kids and even started playing nicely with them. Seeing the great changes that had taken place in their child, Jack’s parents also deeply reflected on themselves. His parents started taking more of an interest in him and even started attending parent-teacher meetings. At the moment, I realise that every child needs love and attention, and that a little positivity can go a long way in changing a child’s life.

Where are the speakers?
A.In a bookstore.
B.On a bus.
C.At home.
M:Hi, Maggie! I want all these books here.
W:That might be a lot for your dad to buy at a time.
M:My dad gets me all the books I want.
W:Well, that’s very nice of him.
I want all these books here.”
What does the woman think of the painting?
A.Terrible. B.Average. C.Wonderful.
M:You bought this painting for1,000? Are you crazy? I don’t think it’s even worth 50 bucks!
W:What do you know? It’s a diamond in the rough! Even Vincent van Gogh’s works were considered as rubbish at first, and now they are all priceless!
What are the speakers mainly talking about?
A.A restaurant.
B.Food from Sichuan.
C.Bad economy.
M:I drove by the Sichuan restaurant, and I noticed that it’s closed.I think it went out of business.
W:You can’t be serious! I just ate there yesterday, and the owner didn’t say anything about closing down.
【分析】 在此段对话中男士说“I drove by the Sichuan restaurant ...”,这句话很清楚地表明事件发生的地点。
Why does the man need the box?
A.He is going on a trip.
B.He is doing an experiment.
C.He is packing for school.
W:Jerry, you’re leaving for school tomorrow. What can I do to help?
M:Please ask Dad where my box is.
W:You can use this old suitcase here instead.
【分析】 本对话主要谈论上学之前的准备,“Jerry, you’re leaving for school tomorrow.”

THE MAN WHO CHANGED OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE UNIVERSE Albert Einstein, who is perhaps the greatest scientist in modern physics, is often considered one of the smartest men who ever lived. He made numerous contributions to the world, [1]the most well-known being the general theory of relativity and the famous formula E=mc2.Einstein was not only a genius;he was a courageous and kind figure loved by many people. This gentle genius was born in Germany on 14 March 1879.When he was 16, he tried to enter university in Switzerland, but failed due to his low scores in the general part of the entrance exam, despite obtaining exceptional scores in maths and physics.[2]After studying for another year, he managed to pass the exam, entering university in 1896 and graduating in 1900. Paragraph 1:The contributions and the personal qualities of Albert Einstein 文中使用了两个定语从句,详尽地说明了Albert Einstein的贡献;使用了三处最高级the greatest scientist, the smartest men和the most well-known来说明Albert Einstein的卓越之处。 Paragraph 2:The early life and education

After two years of looking for work as a teacher, Einstein took a job as a clerk in the Swiss patent office.[3]While working there, out of a strong passion for knowledge, he continued to study, earning a doctorate in physics in 1905.That same year, which was later recorded as a miracle year in science, he published four extraordinary physics papers.Following this, he gradually became famous throughout the world as the new Isaac Newton. After four years, he was able to quit his job at the patent office and enter research full-time at a university. In 1922, he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. 在该句中副词短语out of a strong passion for knowledge作原因状语,动词-ing短语earning a doctorate ... Circumstances changed in 1933, when Hitler came to power in Germany.Einstein, who was Jewish, found the doors of academic institutions closed to him.As a consequence, he had to flee Germany. After spending time in Europe, he finally took up a position as a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA.Following that, he continued to make great achievements in physics and mathematics. To the public, he was seen as a slightly odd-looking but kind and funny man.[4]He had a thick moustache and long white hair, which sometimes stood on end as though he had just received an electric shock.Although he was a genius, he sometimes forgot things, like his friends’ birthdays. But despite his peculiarities, he was loved by his friends and neighbours. There is even a story about how he helped a little girl who knocked on his door and asked for help with her homework. In fact, Einstein often encountered people on the street who would stop him and ask him to help explain things. After many such occasions, he finally started saying,“Pardon me! Sorry! Always I am mistaken for Professor Einstein!” On 18 April 1955, it was reported that Einstein had passed away, and the whole world mourned the great loss of a brilliant scientist. Paragraph 3:His work experience Isaac Newton。 Paragraph 4:The turbulent mid-life 文中使用了暗喻的修辞手法,如the doors of academic institutions closed to him。 Paragraph 5:His odd looks, three anecdotes (forgetfulness, love, humour) 该段使用了一系列形容词,如odd-looking、 thick、 long等,描写了Einstein的外貌;使用了明喻,如as though he had just received an electric shock;作者还运用了一个重要的写作手法,即用具体的事迹来体现人物品格、打动读者,该段的小故事能让读者充分感受到爱因斯坦睿智、幽默、和蔼可亲的性格特点。

clerk in the Swiss patent office.[3]While working there, out of a strong
passion for knowledge, he continued to study, earning a doctorate in
physics in 1905.That same year, which was later recorded as a miracle
year in science, he published four extraordinary physics
papers.Following this, he gradually became famous throughout the world
as the new Isaac Newton. After four years, he was able to quit his job at
the patent office and enter research full-time at a university. In 1922, he
was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his explanation of the
photoelectric effect.
在该句中副词短语out of a
strong passion for knowledge作原因状语,动词-ing短语earning a
doctorate ...
Circumstances changed in 1933, when Hitler came to power in
Germany.Einstein, who was Jewish, found the doors of academic
institutions closed to him.As a consequence, he had to flee
Germany. After spending time in Europe, he finally took up a position as
a researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, USA.
Following that, he continued to make great achievements in physics and
mathematics.
To the public, he was seen as a slightly odd-looking but kind and
funny man.[4]He had a thick moustache and long white hair, which
sometimes stood on end as though he had just received an electric
shock.Although he was a genius, he sometimes forgot things, like his
friends’ birthdays. But despite his peculiarities, he was loved by his
friends and neighbours. There is even a story about how he helped a little
girl who knocked on his door and asked for help with her homework. In
fact, Einstein often encountered people on the street who would stop him
and ask him to help explain things.
After many such occasions, he finally started saying,“Pardon me!
Sorry! Always I am mistaken for Professor Einstein!”

A
(2024·徐州高二上学期期末考试)Polish javelin(标枪) thrower
Maria Andrejczyk has sold the silver medal she won at the Tokyo
Olympics to fund life-saving surgery for a sick baby.
The Olympian, a bone cancer survivor, auctioned (拍卖) off
her medal for $125,000, donating the money to help an eight-month-
old Polish boy with a serious disease.
“Miloszek has a serious heart problem and needs an operation,”
Andrejczyk wrote on her Facebook page.“It’s for him that I am
auctioning my Olympic silver medal.”
The medal was bought by a Polish convenience store chain called
Zabka, which quickly announced it was letting Andrejczyk keep the
medal. The money will help pay for an operation for Miloszek at Stanford
University Medical Center in the US.
In an interview on Polish television, the 25-year-old Olympian
said,“The true value of a medal always remains in the heart.A medal is
only an object, but it can be of great value to others. This silver can save
lives, instead of collecting dust in a closet.”
Andrejczyk knows what it is like to battle health problems. After
missing out on a medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics by just 2 cm, she sat
out the next year with a shoulder injury and was then diagnosed with bone
cancer in 2018.
But she fought back from both challenges to finish second in the
javelin at the Tokyo Games. Her silver medal throw of 64.61 m was just
behind China’s Liu Shiying who threw 66.34 m to take the gold.
After it won the auction, Zabka announced on social media that it
would let Andrejczyk keep her medal, and make a donation to Miloszek
in her name.
“We were moved by the extremely beautiful gesture of our
Olympian, so we decided to support the fundraiser for Miloszek,”
Zabka tweeted.“We also decided the silver medal will remain with Mrs
Maria.”

Ask any parent and it’s likely
they’ll tell you they’re worried about their kids’ screen time.A 2021 poll
found it was Australian parents’ number one health concern for their
kids — ahead of cyberbullying and unhealthy diets. But how worried
should parents be?
In our new research, we wanted to give parents, policymakers and
researchers a comprehensive summary of the best evidence on the
influence of screens on children’s physical and psychological health,
education and development. We found some things that should reassure
parents.
The overall size of the influence of screens across the outcomes (for
example, depression, body weight, literacy and sleep) in children
were small. We also found it’s not the screen itself that really matters but
what’s on it and the way kids use it.
Television is a form of screen time that has worried parents for more
than half a century. We did find general television viewing was associated
with poorer academic performance and literacy skills. But if the program
was educational or if the child was watching with a parent, we found
there was a benefit to their literacy.
Our research found more social media use was associated with
depression, anxiety and risk taking. The more time a child spent on social
media, the more likely they were to have a mental health issue.
So, a key message from our study is to focus less on an
unachievable time limit, and instead focus on what kids are actually
doing on screens.Try to steer them towards educational apps and
meaningful TV programs.
Regardless of what screen-based activities you choose to allow,
remember most screen time is sedentary.Long periods of sitting aren’t great
for kids (or adults), so breaking up these periods with movement is
still important.
Eventually, the most important factor for child development is
quality parenting.Being present, spending quality time and creating a
caring environment are what really make a difference for children. You
matter more to your child’s mental and physical health than the screen.

A. Its size.
B. Its quality.
C. The contents on it.
D. Hours children spend on it.
根据第三段中的it’s not the screen itself that

7. What does the underlined word “steer” in Paragraph 6 probably
mean?
A. Guide someone’s behaviour.
B. Develop someone’s interests.
C. Forbid someone’s activities.
D. Follow someone’s footsteps.
8. What should be the top priority for parents according to the author?
A. Choosing educational apps.
B. Keeping their children company.
C. Combining sitting with movement.
D. Limiting their children’s screen time.

A Historical Figure in China
Of all the brilliant historical figures in China, I admire Sima Qian
most, who is best-known for his brilliant work Shi Ji, or Historical
Records.
With a great passion for history when he was young, Sima Qian
visited almost every corner of China to collect first-hand information about
historical events and figures. In 109 BCE, Sima Qian began to write his
historical work, Historical Records. Even though he was sent to prison
later for political reasons, he never gave up and finished the grand project
in the end.
Undoubtedly, Sima Qian’s Historical Records is considered to be
the greatest historical work in China. His passion for his career and his
persistence in his mission will always motivate us to keep working hard for
our dreams.
I used to work in a preschool for one and a half years, teaching the
class for 2-year-olds. There was a headteacher and two assistant teachers
(including me) in our class.
Maybe 8 months into my work, we had a new student named Jack,
who was nearly 3 years old but hardly knew any words. In fact when he
arrived, the only words he would say were “hi” and “no”. Based on
our working experience, we suspected his parents just never interacted
with him at home.
Every morning, Jack’s mom would drop him off with a totally blank
expression. The moment they arrived, Jack would start crying, holding
onto the hand or leg of his mother, who would just struggle to get the boy
off her, saying “Let me go, Jack.” and then walk away without
looking back. When she picked him up in the afternoon, Jack would run
up to show her something, but she would simply stare blankly at him and
say “Let’s go, Jack.” If the teachers reported anything to her, she’d
say “I see.” “Mhmm.”, giving us the same absent look.
Jack’s dad rarely came and he was just as bad. He obviously had an
anger problem. Anytime he heard something negative had happened, he
would turn red, stare angrily at his son and just say “HUH. Well. We
will deal with it.” in such a cold voice.
As a result, the boy, who longed desperately for attention and
love, was always bad-tempered (坏脾气).He would run, kick,
hit, and even sometimes bite other kids. And when he did it he would
laugh and turn to us to look for a reaction. We criticized and punished him
again and again, but it didn’t work at all. After his second week, the
lead teacher decided to talk to his mom about it. His mom just shrugged
(耸肩) it off, gave that blank look and said, “Oh yeah, Jack is a
I just can’t help it.” The teachers were all
shocked.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Having handled Jack for two months, we adjusted our approach.
To our great joy, Jack gradually changed.

Having handled Jack for two months, we adjusted our approach.
Instead of punishing him every time he misbehaved, we tried to give him
more positive attention. When he did well we praised him, and when he
was sad we hugged him and played games with him. Slowly but surely,
Jack started to open up. He would smile more often and even started
communicating with other children.
To our great joy, Jack gradually changed. He stopped hitting and
biting other kids and even started playing nicely with them. Seeing the
great changes that had taken place in their child, Jack’s parents also
deeply reflected on themselves. His parents started taking more of an
interest in him and even started attending parent-teacher meetings. At the
moment, I realise that every child needs love and attention, and that a
little positivity can go a long way in changing a child’s life.
